On shoe stretching: very affordable and very versatile, simple to use devices to do so on your own can be found on Amazon. Mine were 27$, worth every penny and they are there when needed. One related mix of two of your hacks: when stretching shoes like that effect is even better and easier on the shoe structure if you first apply either human skin moisturizer or leather lotion designed for upkeep of leather products, which you should have anyway and those are also ver affordable and have many uses.

  • @MrIanfurniss

One I just remembered for tight shoes: If you're travelling and they're pinching just a little, if you have a shoe tree that you take with you, put either a thick pair of socks on it, or maybe two or three thin pairs depending on how thick they are, then just use the shoe tree as normal. It's a bit hit and miss, you have to gauge how much thickness you need, and if you have some shoe cream to soften the leather, etc, then that would no doubt help too, but if you're just trying to break them in quickly to stop a blister, it's an option.

    • @SARTORIALTALKS

Another trick for shoe laces, instead of doing the double forward knot, you can do it towards you, backwards, not only can you leave a single knot but it also lays the laces across the shoe. When doing the forward knot the laces tend to turn at an angle as you walk. The reverse knot/loop also keeps laces secure.

If your laces are too short and don't have any longer ones handy, just straight bar your shoes. Doing this lengthens the lace length on each side before you make the knot!
On oxfords it's the only way to lace them, and derbys/bluchers it could look better depending on opinion (the latter should be criss crossed because they aren't classic sneakers/athletic trainers). But in fact with the straight bar there's even more flex possible while retaining the tight fit associated with criss cross lacing.
Of course, if your laces are too long and don't have shorter ones around, criss cross lace them. It shortens the length if you already had using straight bar lacing. (I still would only recommend straight barring oxfords if you can help it).

Interesting hacks. Wear suits and such long enough, you sort of learn them through time. I think the razor is quite brilliant. I actually have great luck with the hot shower hack. But the wet towel is much better due to the amount of water used.
For the last year, I'm discovering how amazing leather conditioner is... The wonder medicine for leather. Years ago, I would apply polish. Never conditioner. Now, I probably use conditioner 10x more often than shoe polish. As long as you keep the shoes clean and no serious scratches. Keeps the color intact. It truly makes me feel sad when I see people on the subway with dried out leather goods...

another way to solve the missing button problem (however this only works in a rather specific case) is to remove the first buttton of your barrel cuff if you always use the second one for a tighter fit around the wrist, as the first one for the broader fit is not used and covered up anyway and sew it on where the button is missing. (however this also requires being able to sew on a button)

It's likely the Berluti Knot. I learned it from Kirby Allison but since then I haven't been dressing smart/sartorial, thus having forgotten it. I will use this for my sneakers. Otherwise my own "hack" and alternating knot creates a 100% neat knot anyway.

I'd like to add to the razor trick: Please, please *Triple* check how you hold the razor, especially when you are using razors that are not your own. Nobody wants to lose their stuff to the small trimming blades on the back of some razors.
And clear nailpolish (or superglue) will also work wonders when the stitches that hold buttons decide they want to roam free.

This is the most informative and comprehensive video I’ve seen on Style Hacks. The overwhelming majority of these hacks are new to me. All are extremely helpful, yet a couple really stand out. For example, wiping my shirt with a wet cloth to remove wrinkles is simply brilliant. Another example is the use of duck tape to deal with a pant hem which needs immediate attention. In furtherance of your style hack with regard to stretching a pair of shoes is that these shoe stretching devices are available to purchase in the U.S. for $40 to $50. As you suggest they work wonderfully. Sonya, I’m wondering if I may ask you a question regarding your wardrobe. First, I greatly admire your choice in clothing which from what I’ve seen includes that which is traditionally worn by men including dress shirts, vests, suits, etc. I absolutely love the look and wish that more women would dress accordingly. My question is whether you can comment on how, when and why you developed your sartorial journey in wearing more traditional men’s wear? Hopefully, you are not bothered by the question. Thanks for your consideration...Ed

Hey Ed, I am interested int acquiring this shoe stretching device, in case you can share a link. As for my history, I began writing for Parisian Gentleman in 2012 and became hooked on the idea of wearing artisanal clothing. After some research, I realized that women have been wearing tailored clothes (i.e., jackets, trouser and even ties) since the 1800s. It seemed a shame to write about the subject without experiencing it----and when I experienced well made suits, I never looked back. Thanks for the question and for being here. Cheers ! ~Sonya

@@SARTORIALTALKS Hi Sonya, thanks so much for getting back to me. I purchased my shoe stretcher from Woodlore, which is a subsidiary of U. S. Shoemaker, Allen Edmonds. You can find the shoe stretcher at: www.woodlore.com. I’m sorry that it’s not coming through as a hyperlink, however if you type that address in your browser it will take you directly to Woodlore. I just checked Woodlore’s website and the shoe stretcher is available for $24.95 in U.S. Dollars. I hope this helps...Ed P.S. if you can wait a few weeks, Woodlore usually has a big sale the day after our Thanksgiving Day which is Thursday November 26.

If you are breaking in new shoes/boots, you can use plasters/blister cover type things.
But again you can also use duct tape as a pre-emptive measure (it will reduce the friction between your skin and the sock or shoe), this is my go-to for new footwear.

I have an additional hack to deal with foot blisters. You could wear a thin nylon sock under a thicker wool sock on each foot. This will reduce the friction between the insole of the shoe and the sole of your foot. It also has the added benefit that it will wick away the moisture produced by your feet. Hikers have been using this trick and I use it every time I go out. Haven't had chafing on my soles in ages.

Like the thought of taking a costly bespoke suit on a plane almost gives me a heart attack. What do you take with you what do you not take with you? Travelling with a plane, train, car, etc. What do you do when you arrive? On the other side you could also talk about nice places to visit in France, Italy, etc. that are not tourist traps. Would you consider the idea?

Its also handy for other situations. Its very tacky and solid and good for horse tack. RM have a neat little leather care range. @@SARTORIALTALKS When I was in working as a student in a high end market there was many exotic types of live yeast and fungus from high end cheese, bread, and charcuterie. That needed to be removed from the skin after soaking in at the end of the night. Most interesting was breaking down 38KG wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano with tools that resemble chisels. It left you literally coated in a fine powder from the rind that contained oils and live cheese cultures. In my experience to remove bacteria and fungus from the skin is best done by mixing diluted alcohol with a liquid soap or body wash as a binder followed by applying it on the skin for one minute, and a hot shower to rinse. Plain diluted alcohol evaporates too rapidly on its own on warm skin, and straight alcohol is truly uncomfortable. So mixing with a water soluble binder work best. High proof inexpensive vodka is a better option for skin treatment than rubbing alcohol. As it is food grade and ethanol/additive free.
