California’s Dam Removal Damages: Local Farmers Fear Liability for Massive Salmon Deaths

  • "It really has been the biggest dam removal experiment in modern history. People who were very much in favor of dam removal are now beside themselves because they had no idea this would be the outcome."
    Siyamak sits down with Theodora Johnson, a sixth-generation rancher from Siskiyou County. The Klamath Dam removal project is the largest of its kind in the US. Ms. Johnson will discuss its impact on the community, environment, and wildlife in the area. Siskiyou County recently declared a state of emergency over this dam removal.
    "What's happened with the suspended sediment in the water has brought the dissolved oxygen level down to zero twice since the dams were removed. Now, you see muck and mud, dead fish floating to the banks, crawdads, and we see animals trying to crawl out of the water to escape." - Ms. Johnson said.

      80 to 90 percent of local communities voted it down? What community or communities would that be? The River runs through 3 counties in Oregon and five counties in California. Not to mention the Tribes. What vote are you talking about? What motives? People wanted to remove old dams from two sick and unhealthy lakes. The water has been turning foul every year for years. As soon as the hot weather sets in. The water turns lime green, fish die and it smells like a bag of hot frogs til the cool weather comes back. The dams were old and outdated and had needed to be retrofitted for several years. Pacific Corps decided the cost was not worth what the dams were generating. They were more than willing to to participate in the removal process. It has been a joint effort by multiple agencies. The people who are against the project are clearly in the minority.

    This is not the "outcome"... this is the river having to deal with the damage which was caused by the dams and made so much worse over time. The river has been so polluted with heavy metals, etc. for years and the salmon have not been able to survive in it as a result. It became worse year after year. Had the dams been removed years ago, when first being discussed, there would now be much less sediment for the river to deal with and the river would already be flourishing. Anyone who understands this knew that what's happening now was going to happen, as the river needs to flush itself and that doesn't happen overnight when so much sediment has built up over 100 years of the dams holding it back. I've also not heard of anyone who was in favor of saving the Klamath from the death and pollution it was experiencing because of the dams, "changing their minds" now that the dams have been removed. She was only speaking on her own personal beliefs when saying that many have changed their minds as that's not factual. Yes, we all hate what has happened to the river but also many of us know that this was a necessary evil, and planned for and done at a time to best protect the few salmon that still exist in this river. It WILL recover and the salmon WILL return... and the wildlife with flourish along with the flora which many are working hard to help get a head start on by re-planting native plants to give the re-growth a head start. We ALL knew that this would not magically happen overnight. But it WILL happen, and the river will be sooooo much healthier when it does. I do believe! The alternative was it getting worse and more polluted every year.

      Yeah, she’s a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks type. ‘No one knows how much sediment there is’, then says there were 15 or 20 m cubic yards. So they knew within level of needed accuracy how much there was. Chinook won’t go past the old Copco #1. This autumn we’ll find out, won’t we. We’ll find out soon if she know what she’s talking about. Other people are finding out calling a reservoir a lake doesn’t make it a lake. Some locals wanted the dams to stay. Were they willing to pay for the dam upgrades themselves, or did they want others to pay the billion dollars to keep them in waterfront? Newsflash. It’s capitalism. Corporations from far away make decisions that effect locals everyday. This week ask Red Lobster employees. It’s normal.

  • @dadstillsurfs
    @dadstillsurfs 3 місяці тому +4

    Everyone knew the dam held a massive amount of sediment / silt behind it. Every biologist knows that salmon need clean aka silt-free gravel to successfully spawn in. The pro-dam removal folks felt that the "new" banks could be replanted to create deep, cool pools and runs that would be beneficial to the salmon, steelhead, and coho.
    This winter WILL be the ugliest for the fish and wildlife. I pray that the 2024-2025 rain season is at least normal.
    By The Way... In the 50s, when these dam projects were completed, the state was in one of the largest building booms since the Gold Rush. The state has continued to allow more building and home projects that all require more and more water. The existing housing communities have roundly refused to accept using recycled water systems, even for irrigating their landscaping.
    Governor Newsom has historically sided with water for Big Agriculture and development, but not wildlife.
    Theodora Johnson, from the Scott Creek neighborhood is telling the story of "everyman" in modern California. Do more with less, then do without...then perhaps we'll give you some back again. You will not allowed to succeed on your own, the Government will take care of all of you, at the price of your ability to be self-sufficient.
    Are you still wondering why there is a Second Amendment?

    Wow. If she applied the same hand-wringing attitude that she has for river restoration towards her business… she wouldn’t put cows on her pasture, ‘because they might stomp on the grass’… she wouldn’t dehorn or castrate her calves because ‘it hurts them’…she wouldn’t allow her cattle to graze in riparian areas ‘because they might get stuck in the mud’ (that would be a good thing though)… she wouldn’t disk her alfalfa fields because ‘it might cut up worms’… she would give her land back to the Indians who lived there before her ancestors kicked them out… ‘to make the residents whole again’. She’s obviously smarter than that, but is projecting all the criticisms that she’s heard about her lifestyle upon her ‘enemy’- those damn enviro-mentalists.

      @zacknelson8918 You obviously didn't think through the concept. Only the pure lines would be released the years they can actually spawn. If the pure lines can't spawn certain years, then they aren't spawning.... They could even make a separate smaller hatchery at a different location for the mixed lines and employ more people.

    • @Kauai-OO-80s
      @Kauai-OO-80s 3 місяці тому

      @zacknelson8918 Also please note that the concept is only intended for entirely naturally bred fish. No GMO bs.
      If you are against a fish hatchery releasing pure lines "because they aren't natural enough" than you should just be advocating for closure of the hatcheries entirely.
      Don't fight what nature itself can do while maintaining that the hatchery should be kept if that is your circus you are advocating.

    What a great articulate propagandist. Dam removal and managing water allocation and minimum flows in the Shasta and Scott watersheds are two completely different issues, but like a straw man argument, she ties the two issues together. They have been ignoring voluntary requests to reduce water use and now the water board has stepped in to make it mandatory and set minimum flows to protect salmon. She says turbidity is spiking to a couple thousand NTUs. That's another lie. The maximum was 1340 and that was just one day. They say their water. Sorry not your water unless you have senior water rights. You are only entitled to excess water. They have been dewatering and mismanaging the Scott and Shasta for years. California Insider should provide an opposing view to be fair.
