I was born in Oakland but I'll probably never go back. I left in the 1990's. I remember walking around on 96th Ave. East Oakland near 96th when I was a child. It was a nice place then, but last time I looked, it seemed like a slum. Very sad. All the nice old businesses I remembered from my childhood were gone.

I don't understand. In every developed western nation, as part of proof that you live somewhere is the prove of pay. A lease isn't enough in the rest of the world. First, you have to show it, second it becomes void if you don't pay. So there is like a grace period for tenants depending on country between 1 and three months, but even people with real contracts and historical pay get thrown out if they miss too many payments. The police has to throw them out. The problem then becomes an enforcement issue. The legal stuff is figured out. Your laws don't make sense.

That community justice type of law enforcement is no joke.Look at what's going on in South America and Africa. it's the worst thing that could happen and yet they're pushing hard for that barbarian nightmare to take place here.....

I was flying out of SEATAC to visit family in the Bay Area. My seatmate was born & raised in east Oakland & left there with his children & moved to a place he had never been because he didn't want his kids growing up there. He was only going back to see his mother because she was dying & his sister begged him to, paid for his ticket. This was his home, with deep roots, but for his kids he said, no more.

Crime was different back then because the cops were allowed to police the way Oakland needed to be policed but that has all been taken away by the liberals and bleeding heart liberals. Oakland is the best example of what any city can become when there is no parental responsibility, single motherhood, fatherless homes, poorest educational system, and the victim card.

Seems to me that people turn to crime because there are no jobs or not enough jobs available. Not because they are somehow crime-prone. No job, no money and you need money for food and housing and the basic necessities of life, I think there are not enough jobs because housing costs are too high. For example if I were a factory owner, why should I locate say my light assembly plant in the highest housing cost locations in the Country?. I'd have to pay my workers more so that they can afford the area rents, but by doing so as the Plant owner I am not competitive and will be outbid by some competing Plant owner somewhere else who doesn't have to pay his workers so much. My solution for solving homelessness, crime, drug use, and mental illness and lack of education would be a moratorium on foreign and corporate ownership of single family homes in California, and a high tax on second homes, and overbuilding normal (not housing for the homeless) physical housing units until the prices fall to levels where a minimum wage worker can actually buy on a 30 year mortgage an actual normal home, and they have ten choices to pick from and they are perpetually on offer.. Until that happens it is going to be difficult for any hiring companies to make it here and thus the lack of jobs will continue, as well as the accompanying crime,.

The reason we have this problem is the government and elected officials. They have fed this nonsense to people that they don’t have to pay their rent, their student loan, their bills and that they deserve to not have to work and have everything for free. Until this mentality is crushed, this problem will never go away.

Sigh… the criminal is protected. There is a fine line between protecting owner’s rights and protecting tenants. I think that the key is defining what a tenant is and what a squatter is. I think that notarizing a lease at certain places so that random signatures aren’t accepted as notary.

I was a very good tenant for over 25 years, always paid on time and took care of the unit. Yet, I still got cheated out and had to move out due to my property manager scamming me. So, I totally moved out of the state. Best decision. I hope my landlord gets one of this squatter in his new higher priced units.

Newscum (misspelled intentionally) created this disaster with his “no accountability” policies. Police officers have their hands tied and are not allowed to police because of his policies. The laws are present but not followed due to the lax liberal policies. Oakland and SF have been under liberal governance for decades and the crime, death, homelessness, drugs have all escalated. Now that Newscum wants to be president he wants to appear to step up with his right hand and with his left hand he balanced his corrupt budget by cutting funding further for our prisons. You think he cares about the residents of CA? Think again. We don’t have police because these liberal mayors thought it was a good idea to defund the police and hire social workers really people? The mayors are more interested in how to embezzle tax payer monies than run these cities and protect the residents. This is tragic! Stop voting for the people causing these problems or prepare to be run out of the state!
