  • In this epic Talk, Colin O'Brady, explains his journey back from a tragic burn accident only to ascend to the 7 tallest mountains and two poles on earth - in world record time.
His idea is centered around mindfulness and how one can achieve anything no matter the circumstances.
With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER and to the creative digital craft provided by ENJOY THE WEATHER. All of our Partners and event history can be found TEDxPortland.com
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Colin, a native of Portland, is a testament to mindfulness, setting audacious goals and achieving them despite overwhelming odds. Last year, Colin set two world records: He became the fastest person ever to complete both the Seven Summits (climbing the highest peak on every continent) and the Explorers Grand Slam (the Seven Summits + skiing to the last degree of the North and South Poles). He completed the challenges in 131 and 139 days, respectively. His nonprofit, Beyond 7/2, strives to inspire kids to lead active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
      (Quran 2:21-22)
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.
      (Quran 2:28-29)
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."
      (Quran 13:28)
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
[ Allah ] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.
      (Quran 20:124-127)
And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
      (Quran 3:85)....

    - We have full control of our choices to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
    - Other people can't believe to your goal. Don't hear them. Remember, only your mind can make limits of your potential.
    - Divide your big dream goal into small steps and achieve them from day by day.
    - Turn your mindset towards the positive and you will quickly realize your potential.
    - Achievements are only for those who never give up, who set goals and going to the dream.

I admit he tells an amazing story. It's truly heartwarming to hear or read that someone rebounds from what could have ended up a devastating loss.
But it doesn't always turn out that way. Some of us don't recover from such losses, especially when it's loss after loss after loss no matter what we do to try to recover. To someone like myself who's life has been ruined by the outside world multiple times, it's pie in the sky. There comes a time after incident after incident that one just gives up.
I wish the world or at least popular culture would acknowledge that life is not as simple or as formulaic as talks, books, and advice columns like this would have us believe.

    • @ilsemorgan4001
      @ilsemorgan4001 Рік тому +1

I hope you’ve found a new source of resilience. Compounded loss is much like compound interest…which makes it complicated for recovery. I’ve been on a recovery path for 3 years now and I’m still working tenaciously at feeling good with and about myself…EMDR has been an amazing tool. If you have access and means, it can begin to unlock areas of the brain and healing follows (with lots of work and headaches). When the brain allows the body to release the trauma …it begins to rebuild. Wishing you strength.

This was incredible and inspirational. Jenna's pep talk helped me in my own journey. She puts fear into perspective . She reminds us: 'There's No Reason You can't be One Of Them to Succeed Mt. Everest. I too have my own Mt.Everest to climb Jenna says: Go inside your body, and listen...face those fears...change your mindset and achieve the reason you started. '' I know, '' she says to Colin : you can do it. Then Colin says this: FOCUS.. one STEP at a time. His body wanted to give up. Our mind, our emotional soul wants to give up..OUR biggest obstacle of all. Colin become strengthen by : Words. He forgot his weakness, and a sudden surge of energy came upon his body. Enduring more HARD work...with time. SEEING his Goal with his own eyes...conquering his fears...from the TOP OF THE WORLD. I also learned Jenna could see such a clear view on not to lose your motivation when you think you can throw in the towel. Jenna inspired Colin not to take your/his eye off the goal or obstacles will set in. Jenna words from miles away was enthusiastic and passionate because she "BELIEVED." and she believed in Colin. She vigorously acted by setting up the next yet much HARDER goal Colin had to conquer.Throughout bigger storms which we all go through, brought Colin additional fatigue forcing him to earn each step of the untapped reservoir of his potential:waiting to be released to arrive at Summit Denal. He states :"We Don't Have To Stay " in the negative mindset when facing life obstacles. Colin asks: ''How Will You Respond..You Have A Choice. He reminds himself by carrying a rock with him daily to push forward: because Achievement is not for the select few. What do you carry in your pocket?
For me... Jesus is my Rock......... to achieve my most obstacle.... of all....OUR MIND.
Colin mentions when your steps... get you there.... push your chair further and when you feel the need to give up :
PUT YOUR BOOTS BACK ON and remember to, '' Walk With Your Rock" As Jenna stated from the beginning : Go inside your body and listen...put your fear into perspective and reach your own Mt. Everest / Mt Denali ...
Awesome story Thank you Jenna and Colin O'Brady

I see comments where is talking about financial situations.
First thing What I noticed that you didn't listen what he said.
    Step by step!
It's mean if you need money to do something so:
    1. Put chair one step away from you- It's mean get a job.
    2. Put chair one more step away from you- it's mean start working and save money.
    3. Put chair 5 more steps away from you- it's mean if not enough one job find another one at least part time to save enough money.
    4. Put chair 7 more steps away from you- it's mean be patient and keep grinding cause you're working for your DREAM.
    5. Put chair 1 more step away from you- it's mean you finally made it( earned money).
So take a seat and rest a bit.
    6. Just remember to get MONEY was easy part!
To achieve DREAM it won't be easy but it's possible! Only need to do much more steps than you ever have done before.

He looks so good. Lucky him.
He had great support. Number one.
I can get that third hand by extending his memories, the few that I know, into my own.
A little more force. That's why I keep listening.

This is a great story about not giving up no matter what situation you are in. You have to battle your mind, set goals and push through the pain to reach those goals. It is not a story about people who have better resources can accomplish great things.

Casey James yea people are talking out of their asses. In order to justify their own sorry lives, they need to find a reason why he was able to things they were not (money).

    • @jowilliams9808
      @jowilliams9808 5 років тому +8

Yes he allegedly painted peoples houses; to initially travel, yet you would have to have a lot of powerful contacts, and wads pf money, to fulfill the climb challenge in the time etc you cant just do it Imo and why would anyone. He's done it. Do something new and different to just climbing mountains.

@@jowilliams9808 jo williams I think you're missing the point, though. So what if he had a lot of money? What matters is the message and he did a great job of delivering it. What matters is how many people he's inspired to do better things with their lives. Not everything's about money.
