The Power of belief -- mindset and success | Eduardo Briceno | TEDxManhattanBeach

  • The way we understand our intelligence and abilities deeply impacts our success. Based on social science research and real life examples, Eduardo Briceño articulates how mindset, or the understanding of intelligence and abilities, is key. When students or adults see their abilities as fixed, whether they think they're naturals or just not built for a certain domain, they avoid challenge and lose interest when things get hard. Conversely, when they understand that abilities are developed, they more readily adopt learning-oriented behaviors such as deliberate practice and grit that enable them to achieve their goals. But this belief is itself malleable, and there are clear actions we can all take to establish a growth mindset and enable success for our children, our peers and ourselves.
Eduardo Briceño is the Co-Founder and CEO of Mindset Works (www.mindsetworks.com), an organization that helps schools and other organizations cultivate a growth mindset culture. The growth mindset was discovered by Stanford professor and Mindset Works co-founder Carol Dweck, Ph.D., and is described in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (www.mindsetonline.com). Mindset Works offers Brainology, an innovative blended learning program to teach a growth mindset to students, teachers and schools, as well as teacher professional development and tools (www.mindsetworks.com/brainology/).
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

Great talk! Here’s the 3 things he mentions at the end to help change your mindset:
    1. Recognise the growth mindset is supported by science. Neuroscience shows that the brain changes when we work hard to improve ourself.
    2. Learn and teach others to develop their abilities.
    3. Listen to your fixed mindset voice. Talk back with a growth mindset voice. Change “I can’t do it” to “I can’t do it yet”.
    Thank you, kind sir ♥️

I went from "I'm anti social. I'll just stay by myself, I like my company and I can survive on my own" to being an active part of my family and friends' lives. I went from "I don't want to be a teacher I can't teach. I don't have the patience or the skill for it" to being one of the best teachers at my school. I realize it's not that simple for everyone (not saying it was simple or easy for me) but we should push ourselves past what we think we know about ourselves. We are constantly changing and we can constantly improve. Keep growing folks!!

My parents, especially my mom, has always told me i am a very smart and talented kid. I've always heard her brag about me, and now that I reflect on this, it HAS somewhat affected me. I haven't grown much in my educational aspect mostly because i was afraid to join higher classes or organizations that i thought were too "hard" for me. I did this because i didn't want to disappoint them. Now that i'm 19, i wonder how much it would have mattered if she didn't say those type of comments.

Sometimes not just parents tell kids they’re special. Quite often teachers in high school will tell a student that they’re special if they excel. This sets people up to fall because they are prone to stop paying attention to those around them.

People with a fixed mindest show the greatest brain activity when getting confirmation of their abilities, such as a good grade. If you believe you are naturally good at something you won't progress.
Those with a growth mindset acknowledge their weaknesses and see them as an opportunity to improve. They frame it in a positive light. By constantly searching for ways to improve and accepting their inadequacies they rise to greater heights than those with a fixed mindest.
You may or may not be gifted but if you see yourself as nothing special and always aim to improve you will reach your full potential which will likely be higher than that of those generally perceived to be "special".

Not mind blowing but valuable nevertheless. The good TED talks don't generally tell us something staggeringly new but remind us to refocus on relatively simple or basic principles that have been relegated in our mind either subconsciously or explicitly.

I had a teacher who once told me that there are people with natural Intelligence and others who just don't have it. While she may be correct to a certain point, she was wrong in the fact that the way she said it, she really believed that for the non intelligent that was it and for the intelligent ones, life was going to be a learning experience. I took it with a grain of salt and watching this vid finally brings closure to what she said. Some people may not be intelligent as others but with effort and a growth mindset, we can achieve many things!

Ste B - You'd be surprised at how smart you can become if you surround yourself with winners. The "natural intelligence" concept applies mostly to the speed with which an individual can grasp a concept, however, it doesn't necessarily apply to the real world. When it comes to learning the application of learned concepts in addition to creativity and a growth mindset is what matters most. A teacher wants a student to "get it now", but in the real world slow and steady wins. I was an inconsistent average student who didn't become interested in science and mathematics until my late 20's. Now I am more wealthy than anybody I went to school with, so I am living proof.

I especially like his analogy about how we often define ourselves by what we're not - for years I made jokes about what a non-tech person I am. When I finally realized how that affected my willingness to try anything that involved dealing with technology I began challenging myself to lean into it and learn by doing. That has made a huge difference in my life and we can do this in any area of our life.

I've completed plumbing, electricity, remodeling a kitchen, tearing down and reconstructing walls all without any prior experience. it took me longer than a skilled laborer but I did a great job comparable to pros. I Did this while everyone told me to just hire a pro, that I didn't know what I was doing. this is what I did a few months ago, I have accomplished much more than just dirty jobs, but it will take forever to write. Intellectually, I graduated high school with a 2.1 GPA, yet have graduated with 2 undergrad degrees with a 3.72 and a 3.56. I will be getting my graduate degree soon.

I have a mixed mindset of fixed and growth. I see a lot of myself in my younger brother. He easily gets frustrated when he doesn't understand something at the onset or when he gets a grade below my parents expectation even though he didn't try at all. My parents belittle us, i think, with compliments about our intelligence or comments about our grades. They always say that certain people in the family are "smart." So now, my younger brother has a tendency to think that he doesn't need to work hard. And I think that too sometimes. I hope to use this video to grow. Thank you!

That's one of the most meaningful videos by Ted. I do not know about the credibility of the statistics but the way he has talked about different mindsets adopted is praiseworthy. This video should be played in every school, because, I feel that everyone out here has started from having a fixed mindset. What's sad is that you actually discover about this when most of the damage has been done. Living with a fixed mindset for the 16 years of your life and realizing that it was the only thing actually acting as an impediment in improvement, is a big blow.

This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” (Dweck, 2015)
      look theres more
“In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success-without effort.” (Dweck, 2015)

I honestly don't know if this is founded on scientific fact, but I believe the backbone behind 'fixed' mindset beliefs and 'growth' mindset beliefs is the intent behind them or, at least, how we come to interpret them. Anyone who has the belief that they are special or superior to others most likely has an undercurrent of inferiority or fear of being loathed, while someone with a growth mindset of 'I want to try new things' or 'I really want to learn this' is subconsciously open to different ideas or just openly enjoys the prospect of expansion. Words are neutral, intent and emotion are the driving force.

This was scarily eye opening. I'm not afraid of challenges, but yes, there are certain areas in my life, where a failure hits really hard, and it takes me some time to face it again, reattempt it.
    But, now, I know why.
So, any failure will hurt, and sting and break my heart, but I need to remind myself that it will only be worth some thing, if I'm brave enough to face it and learn from it!

  • @emilycookies6140
    @emilycookies6140 5 років тому +2

I absolutely agree that a fixed mindset will contribute to failure. Especially in college, you’re surrounded by people who are smarter than you and possibly learn faster than you. If you continue to think that something about you is special then you can’t learn from the people around you. This goes very well with another TED talk about grit. Both encourage a student to accept their failure and not stop, but to keep on pushing. With a mindset of being special compared to everyone else, you think that you’re set apart. When really you need to allow your actions to set you apart in a positive way.

So true, I am doing a short course in Physics at the moment and wasn't doing too well as I told myself "I suck at maths" and that stopped me from trying too hard. I have one unit left on Forces and I'm attacking it with the growth mindset, anyone can do it, it just takes effort!
It's funny I was super close minded before with Maths. When it comes to something such as exercise though my growth mindset is good, I know I can get better and I often visualize getting the upper hand on someone that got theirs on me, such as executing a throw on someone at wrestling and then I'll go and get it.

I’ve always been told I was born smart, and got through high school with flying colors but when it comes to classes where I have to put effort and “work” for it, I tend to be less successful. Now that I am aware how much that hindered my growth, I will teach my children that you aren’t born smart, you have to work hard for it because eventually those that work hard will surpass you.
