  • Wexford is a typical Irish town located at a river crossing. However, it has unique characteristics too.
    The town of Wexford on the mouth of the River Slaney has seen many changes over centuries. Originating as a Viking settlement the east coast town was once a thriving port before the development of Rosslare and silting up of the river estuary. The mercantile buildings along the waterfront and the railway line running along the quay are evidence of a Wexford’s trading past.
    Where once a court house stood, there is now a petrol station other areas of the town are also showing signs of neglect. A new urban renewal plan for Wexford is now in place.
    ‘We Live Here: A Study of Wexford Town’ was broadcast on 16 December 1977. The programme was written and produced by Christopher Fitz-Simon.
    ‘We Live Here’ was a series dealing with aspects of the Irish environment, in particular, that which is man-made.

      The passenger trains still run along the quay, but they're all railcars now, sadly no locomotive hauled trains.

    Remember crossing that bridge or the first time in 1976, little did I know I would marry a lady from the town and rear two fine sons who in turn have their own sons now, hope to be home for good before the end of the year.

    Look at Wexford now compared to how it was dilapidated then and people often comment on this channel that things were better then when it clearly wasn’t.

      Did you watch the video? Did you hear him toon the neglect and dilapidation? How is that better? Country was in a state back then and much better now. Irish people are not being replaced but added to and the newcomers children will be Irish.

    Ahh, them halcyon days, when Ireland WAS Ireland!🍀🍀🍀

    • @murpho999
      @murpho999 6 місяців тому +7

      Halcyon? Wexford was in shite as shown in the video. Economy was a basket case. Poorest country in Europe. Emigration was rife and led to brain drain. No work, ruled by church, no divorce, contraception, sexual freedom or civil rights. Things much better now and would not want to go back to those days.

      Now we have emigration again, because people can't afford the outrageous price of housing.
