- Sophia Malthus became a quadriplegic after being thrown off her horse just over a year ago. She’s a young woman with sass, and we follow Sophia and her family on a journey to acceptance, and back to independence.

Horses are incredibly smart too, so it likely understood she was injured and maybe even the part it played in her injury. I feel for them both and I cried too!

It depends from injury to injury, if you completely sever the spinal cord there is no mobility. If you damage it there is still some mobility usually

Quadriplegia occurs when the neck area of the spinal cord is injured. Sometimes people with quadriplegia can move their arms, but have no control over their hand movements. They cannot grasp things or make other motions which would allow them a little independence.

I admire how incredibly resilient you are. I had a dving injury and I am a c5/6 Tetraplegic, yet I have been riding since I was 5. I was completely dependent when I came home from the hospital but worked hard and slowly rebuilt my independence. It took 2 hours to out my pants on, now its 4-5 minutes. I learned to shower, transfer, cook, drive and finally live without assistance. I met the love of my life and got married two years ago. He sees me, not the chair.I am currently working on my Ph.D in Clinical Psychology. Nothing is impossible and life is full. Laugh when you want to cry and never say no to an invitation. Just keep being you beautiful. Im excited to continue to watch your journey. Much love, stay strong

I’ve been a T7 paraplegic since I was a kid, 40 years ago. Life is challenging but awesome. I graduated high school, college, married my college sweetheart, have an awesome professional career, and have twins. I’ve travelled the world. None of it was easy, but it’s all been worthwhile. You get out of life what you put into it. Sophie will be fine. She, like me, will never walk again, but it’s not the worst thing that happens to people.

Also, reading the bible out loud healed my neck, made my bones, joints and whole body feel very much stronger too. I believe it can heal anything so always do daily bible reading. Look up healing bible scriptures online or read any of it, it's all so good to read. Pray every day in Jesus' name and always Tithe faithfully, it heals so much too if you do it right.

My husband is a C-4 C5 Quad. I have been loving him and helping him physically for almost 40 years. We met when we were in our mid 20’s and have been together ever since. We have a rather hard life physically speaking compared to the average, but LOVE CONQUERS ALL. It is possible to have a very fun exciting and fulfilled life with meaning, it just depends on how one looks at life. If you have a good attitude and you try you will go far. That goes for the caregiver and the disabled people as well. Life is what you make of it.
She is sooo beautiful. I laughed when she said, "am I still loveable?" Honey, If you are not loveable, there is no hope for the rest of us.
The intro of her going back to the location of the accident, and meeting the horse she fell from again was so powerful and emotional...

Horse ain't that smart ! A Horse doesn't understand Human condition or the fact someone is in a Wheelchair, it means nothing to it.
You can't attach Human emotions to a Animal that's basic functions are Eat , Move and Sleep.

But to take on all that goes with caring for a paralyzed person is a rare person who is up for that way of life

True but it's not selfish if they can admit they wouldn't be up for it. I know of a friend of mine whose wife told him point blank. If something ever happens where you can't take care of yourself I am gone. I'm not taking care of a cripple.while I applaud her honesty it certainly shows her true colors. I attended their wedding where they said the traditional vows of in sickness and health etc. I told him he needs to drop her right now and move on. They have no kids so he doesn't have to worry about that. Is it selfish to admit when you are not up to a situation like this? I would never take care of anyone else's kids but my own . Does that make me selfish if I don't want to adopt?

How are u doing now? I am a 54 yr old C3-C6 incomplete walking with a walker outside, inside walking alone. Some balance issues still. Loss of sensation from my waist down but looking into issues with my Lumbar. Rehab is going well. Theorists can't understand some of the things I can do but they love watching me get better each evaluation.
Thank God she survived! And at least she has the use of her arms! I was in a car accident and had concussion/broken neck. Every day is a gift. Medical breakthroughs are still hopeful.
From what i understand, we may be really close, but there are laws drastically slowing the promising research in, for example embryonic stem cell treatments....if not outright preventing much of it.

Even if you remain healthy your entire life you'll still die at some point. What will never die is the Spirit that lives within your temporal body. That's the part that's most important! I love Mom's transition to the country and gardening...in heels. She has a great attitude too, and so supportive. No wonder Sophie's attitude and strength are so great. Not to take away from what she does and what she has been through.

I've had an SCI for 11 years now and I've ALWAYS SAID that being in a wheelchair is NOT a death sentence!!!! You keep going girl and you're going to do amazing things in your life!
It's terrible going from an independent woman to having to be treated like a child. You don't want to be called inspiring or brave. It's NOT like you chose this. It's as hard to accept help sometimes as it is to give it. Be strong, sweet girl.

I also am quadriplegic since nine years old, and must agree with you. The word may seem harmless and uplifting, but hearing it as many times as I have it loses its effect. There's even a description of it among the disabled community: Inspiration Porn.
You are right, she didn't choose this but Horseriding is an extremely hazardous sport and aspiring to be a jockey is about the most dangerous discipline. Horses are living, thinking, breathing animals who can/do spook without warning.

My mom was paralyzed in a car crash at 19 I was only 11 months old she fought everyday and eventually lived independently it took years to develop Ways to be independent but she did don’t give up hope I pray for you

Brave girl. Very lucky to have the support system she does.
Now I know money won't take her suffering away and all the things I've read in the comments BUT I am extremely glad she seems not to have financial issues. Not because money will cure her or take her disability away, but because it's given her better life quality. She's an incredibly strong young woman and her attitude towards the horse shows she also has a wonderful spirit.
I think they have decent health insurance in NZ.
Romy it wouldn't matter in NZ if her family had money or not. As i've replied to someone else higher up, we have ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation). Every working person here pays 1.5% of their wages in a tax to cover ACC, and employers also contribute for each worker. However, although funded by workers, it covers literally every person in NZ, regardless of nationality, or work history, for costs associated with an accident that happens in New Zealand, while they're in New Zealand.
Her carers are paid for by ACC, as are her rehabilitation, medicines and equipment. Even her cabin most likely was paid for by ACC, as it pays for renovations or necessary construction costs to return home and make the property meet the needs of the injured person. Her family may cover some costs, such as alternative therapies, or a partial fee if only partly funded, which is normally $30 or less per visit.
ACC also pays 80% of your pre-accident income, and adjusts yearly for inflation. If a young person is injured before ever working, they can apply for an assessment of income based on the average wage in NZ. Her income will also be propped up by social security payments, such as Disability Allowances etc.
We have universal medical care here, and no, our taxes aren't high either.
+vKarl71 We do, but we don't actually need Health Insurance in NZ to get the care Sophie is. We have ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) and universal health care for all residents. This includes funding for disabilities and carers.
Health Insurance in New Zealand doesn't cover carers etc. That is covered either by ACC or the government.

If Sophia or anyone else in a similar position is ever reading this, just know that you are still lovable and you will see someone who sees through the disability!! My boyfriend has a spinal cord injury, and is paralyzed from the waist down (i didn't know him as able-bodied, this only happened to him about 2 years ago (at 18) after a tumor was found and removed from his spine). I love him more than anything, and his disability has very little effect on our relationship as we've figured out how to do things differently. I don't see him as his disabilities, and sometimes I even forget he has them (which he finds quite funny lol). He is the most determined and positive person I've ever met. Watching this was actually quite strange for me, as a lot of the journey we saw Sophia go through - my boyfriend is/has gone through too (you also have the exact same water bottle?? Which just made it ten times weirder for me as we live in the UK, I know its just a water bottle but with other similarities, this really takes the biscuit lmao)

He's lucky to have you. I'm 38 born with Spina Bifida and it's hard man but I've accomplished a lot in my life and I'm blessed so no complaints. Still waiting for a partner. Hope you guys stick with each other forever ❤️❤️❤️

The ableism and inaccessibility of the world as of now is horrific and it needs to change. It isn’t the disability that makes things hard, it’s the things around us.

Joseph Yes. There are some good academic articles about ableism, and disability Twitter is full of good information. Our main priority should not be to fix, but to make things accessible. Disability is inevitable, it will happen to most of us. Focusing on a “fix” only makes people with incurable or irreversible illnesses feel inadequate or less than as they are.

I have Muscular Dystrophy and I know how driving a car made me feel so independent. It helped me a lot to go where I wanted or needed. So I hope by now you have your own equipped vehicle!

On bbc news they are reporting on a Swiss clinic that has got a paralysed man walking and there is a French guy walking again after being stabbed through the spine,there is hope and progress being made .this lady and others will not be in a wheelchair all there life.

On any injury/disability video, everyone always feels the need to call the women "beautiful." It's so odd, certainly no one is doing the same on the videos of men. Whether it's true or not, how is it relevant?

As a father of a 36 year old son who lost his left leg in Dec. of 2019, this hurts! Mentally working your way past all the emotions isn't an easy road. While in the hospital, he said "Dad, what woman will ever want me now?". I was so heart broken for him. But like I told him, if a woman doesn't accept you for having one leg, you don't want her in your life anyway.
Sophia is beautiful inside and out, and with her determination and great attitude, she can live her life. It will just be different.
Your son can have a beautiful and fulfilling life just like anyone else. Although a disability can be easier to notice than other differences between people, it is likewise a characteristic that doesn't make one better or worse, superiors or inferior. It simply makes us human.

I’m so sorry this happened to her. I was 13 when my dad broke his neck and was a quadriplegic for 32 years. It’s a difficult life. The good thing is that with research especially stem cell advancements in spinal cord injuries She will be young enough to see these advancements and walk again.

Unlikely. Stem cells are hugely overhyped nothing-burgers. Their application is limited to healing regular leg fractures (and even then not much)

Ignoring your clearly messed up in the head, I'd like to point out that muscles and bones can repair and regenerate even after 27 years of atrophy, especially with stem cell application. The problem is they still haven't the slightest clue how to heal a spine.

Hey my friend. I was 20 when I broke my neck. I was one of those "shot in a million" people that went from completely paralyzed to being able to walk 6 months after the accident. While I had 2 fingers with function on the left, I had nothing on the right. I found a surgeon that would re-engineer my right hand fingers to run off the wrist muscles. I see you have the wrist function which would be the function you need. it's accomplished over a series of 2-3 surgeries. The first one is to get your fingers out of your palm. I can see you struggle with that problem. I see that from miles away on any quad. It felt so good to be able to do things just because they weren't curled in my palm. I told my surgeon that the thing I loved the most, was that I could shake peoples hands. From that point the doctor will start to motor the fingers. After the second surgery you start to have the ability to grasp things.
The most important thing is that this function, even in only one hand, will give you back the ability to live on your own. Please give it some thought buddy.

For her to be able face her trauma so quickly and try and heal both emotionally and physically is amazing to me..
Sophia, I can't begin to imagine how awful in some respects this must make you feel. To see millions of people take movement for granted and never see it as a gift, while you struggle everyday . I'm sure the never ending talk inside our heads asks the question to God about "why me?" with never really receiving a satisfactory answer either.
Perhaps your strength and courage is a gift to this world and you become a light to others as people draw power from the flame that burns inside you. You make others see just how fragile life is and for us to be ever so grateful for the blessings we have. There is little fairness and not much justice in this world anymore, but I pray you get a miracle or cure and continue to be that miracle to others. Bless you always.

This life we have here can be just brutally unfair but we all just keep moving forward the best we can. It would be nice if we'd all help each other but I don't see that happening on a large scale in this lifetime. I've had a tough life with drunken, drugged up parents and so much suffering, yet I endure nothing compared to this courageous young woman I wish I could help in some way. thanks for the comment.
@@przysmaki5.... My dad was from Poland and my mom was Irish. My dad was a jerk and I never met him util I was 15. He was always trying to make it in life but had one of the kindest spirits I ever saw. My childhood was so awful I was just trying to stay alive for the first 17 years. It helped to shape me in life though to have more empathy and compassion than almost anyone else I know so in a way...(not all) but in a way, it did make me maybe a better person. Who knows about life anyhow? Just when you have a sense of how to live it ....it's over like the seasons of the year, gone. May God bless you every day of your life.

Man, you have my deepest respect! I landed in a wheelchair myself after i got leukemia and Graft versus host. I also had worries about meeting a girl. But if i stay alone for the rest of my life i'm okay with it. You still look beautiful, have a lot of courage, you are positive and strong! Oh Sophie honey ! You are so beautiful. I know what you and your family have gone through. My niece was a quadriplegic as well. She was c1 and was ventilator dependent. Her vocal cords were paralyzed, she couldn’t swallow and the only movement she had was her face. She was six at the time of her accident and I was one of her care givers for the last 15 years of her life. She lived 30 years like that. She was so much like you. Gorgeous and happy and busy all the time. Her care givers were like family for us. We had to read her lips and misunderstandings were often quite hilarious. She graduated with honors from high school despite it all. You and she are my hero’s forever. We heartbreaking lost her in October 2017 due to her trachea hemorrhaging from so many years of having a trach. You are blessed you have so much my dear. Hold tight to your amazing attitude. Life is still beautiful. Much love.

Yeah, I have severe anxiety not depression though. Anxiety impacts my life so much and sometimes I think why do I have to have anxiety and be like this cause it is wasting important moments I could be having like going out with friends but now when I watch things like this I realise that there are people in far worse situations than me and it makes me a lot more grateful.
How do you even get a job when you have anxiety and depression? I'm finding it so hard..

Before I even got to the part where she mentioned she was doing therapy, I thought, "this girl is SO going to be walking again!" I will not be surprised one bit the day she walks on her own. Also her family arrangement is awesome. I love that she gets her own independence by her own house, but her parents are only a few feet away. I would love for that.
Also, that interaction between her and the horse that she fell off of was so touching. I couldn't tell for sure from the little bit they showed, but it looked like the horse knew exactly what happened.
I expect she will walk again along with loads of other spinal injury patients. BBC news has been reporting on lausanne University which has a new treatment that looks impressive. Some day soon, right out of left field a viable mass treatment will appear. Love science and technology.

I agree on what you said about relationships not being the top priority thing to worry in her specific situation. Perhaps it’s something that’s bugging her mind constantly, since she saw it important to voice her concerns out loud? I think it’s something that really upsets her. Just my thoughts.

They need to show this video of this BEAUTIFUL, COURAGEOUS , STRONG, BRAVE YOUNG WOMAN to these DRUG ADDICTS AND ALCOHOLICS ! MAYBE then they would see what has happened to her but she tries EVERY DAY to stay positive and live her LIFE to her full potential!! Depression is a disease just like anything else. It's not your fault you have it and you just have to keep trying your best. No shame in seeking professional help.

Very cutting edge research mainly being done in the eyes. I think its more possible they'll work out how to repair her body than make it into a robot.

The horse remembered. I would love her to visit him more often. He wants to see her again...and again. It is very healing for them to be in eachother's presence. He can give her his horse medicine of strength, stamina and power. I grew up with horses and I am learning animal communication and I am also in wheelchair. The cause was meningitis. Thankyou, Sophia, so profound at the end when you said, "my leg's may have stopped, but my life hasn't." I needed to hear that right now. Love you Soul Sister~Bless you~

I broke my neck (C1) on may 7th last year and I have since regained the ability to walk and use my hands again. I can now go back to university and live similarly to how I used to before. There's a lot of problems coming along being a tretraplegic that are difficult to see or understand on the surface. I am incredibly thankful for being so lucky and seeing Sophia's story is very inspiring. I wish her all the best in the world and that she's able to stay healthy and happy in the future!

I cried watching this, cried like a baby for her lost dream...and a bit for my own...
My boyfriend and I were talking marriage and we were out celebrating when he tried to stop a man for beating his wife in the parking lot of a bar.
He was stabbed in the neck, at the base of his spine, severing the nerves, leaving him a quad...
We stayed together for 12 months afterward, I loved him and would have stayed with him.
I tried to get him to live again and we went skydiving regularly - it got him out of the chair and feeling alive...
But he latter took his own life...so although its been 20 something years since his passing, today I morned the loss of both my dream, my boyfriends, and for this young lady...
Same here and it even seemed her horse still knew her and seemed like it knew something was wrong, sniffing at her and her chair...ain't gonna lie, I lost it. 😢😭
I have equal appreciation for all the love and support from people around her. Having a strong support system had to have been crucial to how positive and full of life this girl seems.
To lose ur health- there r no words. What heals is u is love. Having no support makes ur injury so much worse. Breaks my heart- so many people disabled & alone. Touching story❤️

It is heartbreaking to see someone like Sophia crying. I hope through advances in stem cell research we will be able to completely repair spinal cord injuries. From what I've researched, such new therapies should be possible in the not so distant future. I hope it will happen soon so that people like Sophia can regain their independence. For now, I hope Sophia will be able to find happiness in her life as well as regain some independence, even if it's only a little.
Sophia, you will get through this. I cannot imagine what it is like to be a quadriplegic so I will not pretend. However, I do know what it feels like to feel very hopeless at times. You are a beautiful young woman and that has not changed. My ex gf was diagnosed with MS but it did not stop her from attaining a PhD in neuroscience.

Horses are such powerful creatures. When I was a child at summer camp, a horse rolled over onto one of our counselors. She had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance, but miraculously, she was entirely fine. No broken bones, no injuries beyond a few scrapes. She could have died.
You cannot imagine the admiration and respect that I have for you and for other disabled people. I have jumped out of my way to help people who I saw would need help.

There are only a few things worse than having your dreams shattered at such a young age. What a tragic story, and how brave she is.
You remind me so much of my 19 almost 20 year old daughter, Meg. She was in a ski accident a little over a year ago. Meg is now a paraplegic. She is so determined just like you. Meg works out hard everyday. Everyone who is in our day to day life is encouraged and had have witnessed many results in progressive PT. I wish one day you could meet or at the very least communicate...you both have a lot in common. You are an incredible young women, Sophia. I am still very traumatized by my daughters accident and what my daughter has had to over come. Seeing your youtube was emotional but it also gave me hope. Thank you.
It must be awful as a mother in ways that no-one else could imagine. In some ways maybe even worse than the daughter's experience because I bet part of you wishes you could just take her place to give her back her freedom. The selfless, unconditional love of mothers is simply awe-inspiring to me. Make sure to take care of you too Shannon.
