You can actually use a pen display as a pen tablet if you want, and easily switch between these two mode. Just set your pen display to mirror your monitor display, so your pen display is showing the same thing as your pc monitor, then you can just switch between these two mode by simply looking down or looking straight on your monitor anytime you want back and forth...

I genuinely think that getting a screen tablet will improve my art, not my art as a whole, just my digital art. I think I’m pretty good at art on paper but trying to use a drawing tablet is a huge downgrade, I think that just comes to me not having very good hand eye coordination and of problems that come from using a drawing tablet with no screen. If I had a screened tablet I would probably improve my digital art because it would resemble traditional art by allowing me to see what I’m doing.
I think I have the same problem. Like no screen pen tablet is good but it is somehow downgrading my art. I am quite good at hand paper art so screen tablet should work better for me 🤷🏻♂️
The regular ones is a headache to work with.. And it takes me hours to make a clean image. Whilst working on screen is super easy to work with and my lines are crisp in a matter of a few minutes.

I just bought my interactive graphics tablet 2 weeks ago and it actually revitalized my will to draw again. I didnt buy a cintiq, but i have had the pleasure of using the mobile studio pro, the cintiq 22hd and 13hd, along with a few cintiq alternatives. Yes, i will admit, the cintiq is the GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER USED in my life, however, you can get the same quality and feel from the alternatives (i personally bought myself the Huion Kamvas Pro 11, the workspace is the around the size of a sheet of printer paper 'A5' and I FUCKING LOVE USING THIS THING AS WELL) if your one of those people like me, where 1599.99 or 2999.99 seems impossible to reach because the adult life wont allow you to get there lol, i suggest getting one of those and saving your way up into the wacom but to be honest the only difference between the wacom and other alternatives is simply the stylus (which is big and clunky in my opinion) and a few express keys (most alternatives have about 4-6 express keys and it may not sound like alot, but the point in getting a tablet for me was to eliminate the mouse and keyboard and only focus on my arm moving across the canvas). if you want motivation to get back into art, remember its the journey not the destination that matters.
also, interactive pen displays do normally run a high price, but you can find some pretty good deals out there, i bought mine for 199.99 off of ebay which totalled out to 218.36 after taxes and shipping fees. again it says that its 11in but huion actually measures out the actual workspace and not the measurements of the bits and peices around it like most companies do. theres a few other great companies out there that make pen displays now, wacom isnt the only company now, so dont feel intimidated that you have to shell out thousands of dollars just to push your art in the direction you need.
I thought having a screen/portable tablet where I can just sit anywhere and draw would make the process easier and I'd be more motivated to draw (cause having to sit on my desk with my computer and a pen tablet was such a pain in the ass sometimes), so i bought an Ipad. Honestly, nothing changed. I get as motivated as i used to and my drawing skills have only got better thanks to my hard work and not what kind of tablet i own. If by any chance you are reading this or anyone else does , I'll give you my "answers" about your question on how you can keep on being motivated and going through drawings, bear in mind that those tips come from someone who is very new to Digital Art and just got back into drawing after abandoning Art for 2 years before picking up a tablet and discovering it's world, but I'll give you my tips anyways in hope that it helps you and anyone else reading this: 1) Remind yourself what made you draw in the first place. What is it that made you draw ? Was it an anime ? A friend ? A videogame ? Sit down for 10 minutes and think about that, recall what is the essence of you picking up that pencil and drawing things with it. 2)Get yourself an objective. For example, imagine something you truly wish you could draw someday no matter how remarkable or unremarkable it is in the world of drawing, then COMPLETELY erase the word "wish" from your head, because this isn't gonna be a wish anymore but an objective you will accomplish. Look at it like a Mountain, you're at the bottom of it, it looks intimidating, but that's only because you are staring too much at the top without even looking at the first steps properly. Follow steps from artists on how to draw the thing you wanna draw, look at someone else's work and deconstruct their work, to better understand their methods. There is no shame to have by looking at others, in fact looking at the work of other people is KEY to better yourself in drawing and pretty much anything else like Boxing or Swimming etc etc. We learn from others. Always have references at first, then as you progress, you won't need references anymore. And even if you still do years later that's completely fine trust me. 3)Notice your progress but also your mistakes. Once you are halfway through that climbing of that big ass mountain, or slowly but steadily climbing yourself up or even after you are done climbing your third mountain in a row, look at how far you've come. I can guarantee you a shit ton of people were not able to climb as far as you, because they took the wrong steps by shaming themselves, thinking everyone else is better than them or just giving up, but you didn't. And you better never fucking do my friend. Everyone climbs at their pace, no matter how long it's gonna be, you will make it as long as you keep on trying and trying again until you make it. Keep in mind that it is YOUR life, and nobody is gonna force you to climb that mountain, we can give advices, but we can't force you to listen and apply those advices, it is your decision. That being said, it's also good to notice what were those bad habits you had throughout that climbing/drawing. Bad posture, wrong use/choice of pencils, not looking around enough for methods to draw in a more satisfying and better way etc.. Take all of that in consideration and after noticing what made you grimace or trip up through some of your drawings, do your best to not do them again. It will occur eventually, but much less if you pay attention on not doing it again. Then they will simply disappear with time and practice. 4)Finally the last Step which is to me the most important one because it is the first and strongest reason on why I started to draw : HAVE FUN :D Yeah, that sounds absolutely fucking stupid, but it's real, don't take drawing for a work to do because you HAVE to do it, no. Drawing should be nothing else than fun, love and happy things. You won't go far if you don't enjoy drawing trust me. If you think drawing "this" type of art should be fun but it's something you've never tried before, then fucking move your ass and go for it, give it a try :D Have fun even though it's gonna probably look terrible at first! We've all been through there, all of us. In any case, I hope for you all that you find the motivation to keep on drawing and that this big ass comment helped you in some way, Stay safe.

@@BabanIllustration I've been using regular screen-less tablets since Windows 3.1 was still viable, and this was the case even back _then_ . I only realized tonight (by co-incidentally mentioning this for the first time on two comments in a video I watched just before yours, and then seeing Zsolt Medve's comment above) that *so many* people *aren't* aware that pen-tracking without-actually-touching-the-tablet is a thing, and is pretty much universal across graphics tablets. I'll have to include this anytime I answer the question about using non-screen tablets from now on.
Thank you so much. I've been thinking about getting a pen display, but I wasn't so sure if I actually needed it or if I was getting it for the right reasons. I've had my wacom intuous pen tablet for 4 years now and I draw on it almost everyday, but it's still very frustrating to use. Finished pieces never turn out right because I can't get my lines to look as fluid as my traditional lineart and so when I complete the lineart digitally with the pen tablet, it looks boring and lifeless. It also takes much longer to do lineart too. It's starting to run into problems and that only makes things more difficult. I plan to buy a 15.6 Hunion and I hope this solves the problems I'm having and brings my motivation back!
omg same here. i'm using a middle size drawing tablet for 3 years and just now i realised i would never get better with it, even with lots of practicing. it's only useful for painting because lineart requires much more precision with the pen

I've been working with pen tablet with well over 2 years now and still I just take sooo much time to complete one simple work it just demotivates me to a huge extent because I begin to look down upon my art skills just based off of that. I'm moving onto college very soon and I will be taking up animation so I suppose I should start looking for a display pen tablet because to me it is just so much easier to work with.
Great video, it really helped me to finalize my decission to get a Intuos M as a first tablet. I just wish you didn´t mix up the terminology you set up in the beginning regarding pen and sreeen tablets but hey nobody´s perfect. :)

Oh i know that cintiq companions are a thing that you can carry around and behave as their own tabet, though there's a lot ofsupport now for regular tablets where you can download art apps and get pens for them, sure there'll be some more choice there if you search a bit!
Ah, thank you for this video, it is super helpful, I was in a dilemma on which on to get, the pen display or pen tablet, at first I was more to the pen display side, but after watching this video and hearing you out, I ended up choosing the tablet, though I'm more to like advanced and detailed art, I also want freedom to move around and lay on my bed, I also hates that when I draw, my side base palm rest on the paper/screen, so using a tablet might be for me, I say zooming in and out abit is a small price to pay :)
I've entirely replaced my mouse with the pen tablet and it's awesome for the reason you said - not dealing with the wrist / palm stuff. Though, to be honest, most of my work is less illustration and more productivity / layout / etc.

For animation , which do you think would be better. I have the one by Wacom (the smallest one they make) and when I animate I draw the same line so many times before i get the right one and that takes time , animation is already time consuming so Do you think bit would be better with the display
Year old response but to answer your question, it is generally recommended to use a pen display for animating. Animation (mostly 2d) requires a great amount of precision, and especially in the inking and clean up processes where having that pen to paper like feel would be most beneficial. Is it a requirement? No, many great and well known animators, like sr pelo, use a graphics tablet because that is what he is personally comfortable with the most. Despite the ups, it is still a good idea to find what you are comfortable with, I'd recommend starting with getting a bigger size for your graphics tablet and drawing with it for a while to see if it'd be a better fit. Past that is just trial and error with getting a feel for the different graphics tablets/pen displays
I've had a regular wacom bambo tablet for 10 yrs, and the biggest issue i have is that I NEED to use my regular mouse to do almost everything, because I cannot zoom +/- with my stylus, and it really bothers me, I really need upgrade!
I have one of the medium Bamboo tablets (CTE-650) from before Wacom discontinued the name and re-branded them as Intuos. It has a circular button at the top that sends zoom in/out commands when you drag your finger around in it (I just tested this in Clip Studio Paint). I find that I rarely use it, instead relying on the scroll wheel on my mouse, and later on, a scroll wheel integrated into the Razer Tartarus 2 keypad used for most of my keyboard shortcuts. *Letting this message sit for two hours before posting, in the meantime I found that (at least in Clip Studio and Krita), you can hold down [Space+CTRL] and drag left/right to zoom in/out.

im planning to get a screened as i find on a pen tablet i can't seem to get my pictures to come out looking as detailed as my on paper art, i figure it's because of disconnect of drawing on the tablet while looking at the laptop screen, lines just don't come out how i want them too even after two years i find my self using ctrl+Z more than i'd like to
I've been using pen tablets for over a decade, and now I am tired of having a cramped, contorted wrist while I draw on my lap, as well as not being able to have full arm motion. I know I can put it on a desk at an angle, but I move around so much, that everytime I've done this, i end up having to reset my whole setup, because I don't own an actual table to go with my computer. I decided to go with a new 22hd wacom display from ebay for $700. I also purchased a $30 monitor arm, so I'll be able to move it all over my desk and have a keyboard under the display to use as my hotkey, and since it all clamps to tables, I'll be able to do it anywhere.
Literally everyone thinks there art will improve with a display really isnt true. Its a different medium it takes time to learn. If your on a display or a tablet it is equally as hard to taper lines ect because you are learning something new. Your art isnt going to improve with a display tablet because your not practicing enough simple as that. Its a skill has to be Learned, just because your good at traditional doesnt mean you should be good at digital like i said its something new it isnt the same thing weather your on a display or a pen tablet.
I feel like it would be. I like to know what I am drawing at all times and it’s good to start when switching over. Then again I cannot say to much cuz I draw on a iPad. Also. You kinda sus

I have been drawing with pen displays since i started with digital art, and now i can't bare my back pain anymore, hopefully a pen tablet will fix my sitting position and neck inclination when drawing, my only question here is, does it work the same? I mean would i be able to do the same artwork or do you think it will be more difficult?
Personally the only difference I find is that the disconnect between my hand directly drawing onto the screen and drawing on something that translates your movement onto the screen is that it's slightly less accurate. I tend to hit undo a lot more with pen tablets, but they also are helpful because you don't have your hand in the way and can more easily reference whatever else you have on the canvas. I always found keeping proportions in check a lot easier on a pen tablet. It could be a different experience for you but I think they both are very useful and you won't miss out by switching to a pen tablet rather than a pen display. I hope it helps with your back pain, I always found it a lot less stressful on my muscles to use a pen tablet. Hope that helps!
remember ppl........expensive tablet doesnt imp[rove ur art...... 0*5=0 0*246..........still=0 better equiptment improved what u already have.........it cant help if u don't already have a strong base........ start with a smol tablet then upgrade if u feeling like its bottlenecking u for like 2 months

I dont know the answer, but i am also working with a galaxy tablet (with s pen) and I only have access to ibis paint and it's super laggy if I want to have halfway decent resolution and the pressure sensitivity is broken in like 3 places
I'm late but I used to also draw on an old samsung and I agree, I dont think youll produce the work you want on that. However, you CAN do detailed work on a screenless tablet. It's just gonna be more of a battle so if you're prepared for that then you can go for the cheaper option at least until you can buy a display.
Thanks for video I have some questions If I use 2 in 1 laptop in animation graphics (just small business .2D and black and white cartoon ) and contrast, I dispense with a graphic tablet- and I use the pen of laptop - does that make a difference. most screen tablets are separate screens, there are some that are separate tablets (in the sense of a computer tablet like an ipad) with their own operating system though. I think one that is available like that is called the wacom one, but I could be wrong. I've never tried any tablets like that though. most people do use ipads/non specialised tablets for art now as far as I've seen, that could be something worth looking into if you wanted a separate tablet that wouldn't be constrained by wiring. For the tablets that are like that you would need to buy the software for them because they run on their own OS. I do think there are some apps that allow you to link up a tablet with it's own OS to another computer and use as a second screen for drawing also, but I don't have any experience with them, I've never had anything like an ipad or similar. Dizzie Dack i think you should buy one of the pen tablet from huion ( it’s pretty cheap, the cheapest is 20$ ) since buying her one of the cheapest will help her step her toes into digital art ( saving money if she loss it or something, if she didn’t like to draw digitally,...)
yeah like the other person replied, probably best to start with something nice and simple, I can't recommend specific tablets since I've only had those 2 in the video but there's a lot of options!
Take it from me, I have been doing 2D Animation on a Pen Tablet for years. You can do it, but it's harder to learn and get a grasp on. For 2D Animation, I highly recommend something mobile so you can Animate all the time and you get the best of both worlds. I recommend Samsung Tab S6 or a IPad Pro with the Apple Pencil so you can do 2D Animation Mobile where ever you want and it already has a display so you don't have to get over that big learning curve with the drawing tablet. Just my opinion. 😊
Not sure, i've never tried to use one for art, I only got myself one recently but it'd pribably be too laggy to do that with, I only got it to use for references for traditional sketching sorry!

Well I’ve been using my display tablet and it’s way easier for me to navigate my lines! Plus you can still just look at the computer screen just like a normal pen tablet but the display ones working better for me

The major issue for me with the regular one is that i can't really learn about precision, i need to try 3x for each line to maybe get the hit.

Thank you. I literally thought that you have to guess where your cursor is going to land on-screen when you drawn on a non-screen tablets. I COULDN'T HAVE GUESSED THAT THERE IS PEN TRACKING EVEN IF YOU DON'T TOUCH THE TABLET ITSELF
I can't speak for other models since I've only ever had that cintiq and the bamboo from the video but I'd assume it works with others as well!

@@BabanIllustration I've been using regular screen-less tablets since Windows 3.1 was still viable, and this was the case even back _then_ . I only realized tonight (by co-incidentally mentioning this for the first time on two comments in a video I watched just before yours, and then seeing Zsolt Medve's comment above) that *so many* people *aren't* aware that pen-tracking without-actually-touching-the-tablet is a thing, and is pretty much universal across graphics tablets. I'll have to include this anytime I answer the question about using non-screen tablets from now on.

Thank you so much. I've been thinking about getting a pen display, but I wasn't so sure if I actually needed it or if I was getting it for the right reasons. I've had my wacom intuous pen tablet for 4 years now and I draw on it almost everyday, but it's still very frustrating to use. Finished pieces never turn out right because I can't get my lines to look as fluid as my traditional lineart and so when I complete the lineart digitally with the pen tablet, it looks boring and lifeless. It also takes much longer to do lineart too. It's starting to run into problems and that only makes things more difficult. I plan to buy a 15.6 Hunion and I hope this solves the problems I'm having and brings my motivation back!

omg same here. i'm using a middle size drawing tablet for 3 years and just now i realised i would never get better with it, even with lots of practicing. it's only useful for painting because lineart requires much more precision with the pen

I've been working with pen tablet with well over 2 years now and still I just take sooo much time to complete one simple work it just demotivates me to a huge extent because I begin to look down upon my art skills just based off of that. I'm moving onto college very soon and I will be taking up animation so I suppose I should start looking for a display pen tablet because to me it is just so much easier to work with.
Great video, it really helped me to finalize my decission to get a Intuos M as a first tablet. I just wish you didn´t mix up the terminology you set up in the beginning regarding pen and sreeen tablets but hey nobody´s perfect. :)

Oh i know that cintiq companions are a thing that you can carry around and behave as their own tabet, though there's a lot ofsupport now for regular tablets where you can download art apps and get pens for them, sure there'll be some more choice there if you search a bit!

Ah, thank you for this video, it is super helpful, I was in a dilemma on which on to get, the pen display or pen tablet, at first I was more to the pen display side, but after watching this video and hearing you out, I ended up choosing the tablet, though I'm more to like advanced and detailed art, I also want freedom to move around and lay on my bed, I also hates that when I draw, my side base palm rest on the paper/screen, so using a tablet might be for me, I say zooming in and out abit is a small price to pay :)
I've entirely replaced my mouse with the pen tablet and it's awesome for the reason you said - not dealing with the wrist / palm stuff. Though, to be honest, most of my work is less illustration and more productivity / layout / etc.

Year old response but to answer your question, it is generally recommended to use a pen display for animating. Animation (mostly 2d) requires a great amount of precision, and especially in the inking and clean up processes where having that pen to paper like feel would be most beneficial. Is it a requirement? No, many great and well known animators, like sr pelo, use a graphics tablet because that is what he is personally comfortable with the most.
Despite the ups, it is still a good idea to find what you are comfortable with, I'd recommend starting with getting a bigger size for your graphics tablet and drawing with it for a while to see if it'd be a better fit. Past that is just trial and error with getting a feel for the different graphics tablets/pen displays

I've had a regular wacom bambo tablet for 10 yrs, and the biggest issue i have is that I NEED to use my regular mouse to do almost everything, because I cannot zoom +/- with my stylus, and it really bothers me, I really need upgrade!
I have one of the medium Bamboo tablets (CTE-650) from before Wacom discontinued the name and re-branded them as Intuos. It has a circular button at the top that sends zoom in/out commands when you drag your finger around in it (I just tested this in Clip Studio Paint). I find that I rarely use it, instead relying on the scroll wheel on my mouse, and later on, a scroll wheel integrated into the Razer Tartarus 2 keypad used for most of my keyboard shortcuts.
*Letting this message sit for two hours before posting, in the meantime I found that (at least in Clip Studio and Krita), you can hold down [Space+CTRL] and drag left/right to zoom in/out.
I know I’m late and this is probably a stupid question but can pen display tablets also be used like pen tablets? Like how you can draw without looking? Thinking of upgrading but I’m not sure if I’d like it being propped up as much
im planning to get a screened as i find on a pen tablet i can't seem to get my pictures to come out looking as detailed as my on paper art, i figure it's because of disconnect of drawing on the tablet while looking at the laptop screen, lines just don't come out how i want them too even after two years i find my self using ctrl+Z more than i'd like to
I've been using pen tablets for over a decade, and now I am tired of having a cramped, contorted wrist while I draw on my lap, as well as not being able to have full arm motion. I know I can put it on a desk at an angle, but I move around so much, that everytime I've done this, i end up having to reset my whole setup, because I don't own an actual table to go with my computer.
I decided to go with a new 22hd wacom display from ebay for $700. I also purchased a $30 monitor arm, so I'll be able to move it all over my desk and have a keyboard under the display to use as my hotkey, and since it all clamps to tables, I'll be able to do it anywhere.
How do you install the wacom bamboo tablet. I tried several times and it did not install
Literally everyone thinks there art will improve with a display really isnt true. Its a different medium it takes time to learn. If your on a display or a tablet it is equally as hard to taper lines ect because you are learning something new. Your art isnt going to improve with a display tablet because your not practicing enough simple as that. Its a skill has to be Learned, just because your good at traditional doesnt mean you should be good at digital like i said its something new it isnt the same thing weather your on a display or a pen tablet.

i have my cintiq 22 and i used it like intuos lol unplugged hdmi cable then VOILA intuos XXL haha the only downside is i am using one monitor but that's fine with me :D
I have been drawing with pen displays since i started with digital art, and now i can't bare my back pain anymore, hopefully a pen tablet will fix my sitting position and neck inclination when drawing, my only question here is, does it work the same? I mean would i be able to do the same artwork or do you think it will be more difficult?
Personally the only difference I find is that the disconnect between my hand directly drawing onto the screen and drawing on something that translates your movement onto the screen is that it's slightly less accurate. I tend to hit undo a lot more with pen tablets, but they also are helpful because you don't have your hand in the way and can more easily reference whatever else you have on the canvas. I always found keeping proportions in check a lot easier on a pen tablet. It could be a different experience for you but I think they both are very useful and you won't miss out by switching to a pen tablet rather than a pen display. I hope it helps with your back pain, I always found it a lot less stressful on my muscles to use a pen tablet. Hope that helps!

I dont know the answer, but i am also working with a galaxy tablet (with s pen) and I only have access to ibis paint and it's super laggy if I want to have halfway decent resolution and the pressure sensitivity is broken in like 3 places
I'm late but I used to also draw on an old samsung and I agree, I dont think youll produce the work you want on that. However, you CAN do detailed work on a screenless tablet. It's just gonna be more of a battle so if you're prepared for that then you can go for the cheaper option at least until you can buy a display.

If I use 2 in 1 laptop in animation graphics (just small business .2D and black and white cartoon ) and contrast, I dispense with a graphic tablet- and I use the pen of laptop - does that make a difference.
And do I have to use the gtx or RTX GPU

The screen tablets, is it basically like another monitor? Can I use all my software on one or do need buy them for that tablet?
most screen tablets are separate screens, there are some that are separate tablets (in the sense of a computer tablet like an ipad) with their own operating system though. I think one that is available like that is called the wacom one, but I could be wrong. I've never tried any tablets like that though. most people do use ipads/non specialised tablets for art now as far as I've seen, that could be something worth looking into if you wanted a separate tablet that wouldn't be constrained by wiring. For the tablets that are like that you would need to buy the software for them because they run on their own OS. I do think there are some apps that allow you to link up a tablet with it's own OS to another computer and use as a second screen for drawing also, but I don't have any experience with them, I've never had anything like an ipad or similar. Hope that helps!

Take it from me, I have been doing 2D Animation on a Pen Tablet for years. You can do it, but it's harder to learn and get a grasp on. For 2D Animation, I highly recommend something mobile so you can Animate all the time and you get the best of both worlds. I recommend Samsung Tab S6 or a IPad Pro with the Apple Pencil so you can do 2D Animation Mobile where ever you want and it already has a display so you don't have to get over that big learning curve with the drawing tablet. Just my opinion. 😊

Not sure, i've never tried to use one for art, I only got myself one recently but it'd pribably be too laggy to do that with, I only got it to use for references for traditional sketching sorry!
