Is there any reason we can't ask to be paid to do the review and still do a good job? There is ALWAYS a reason to have a biased opinion and self serve, yet a lot of people like Brad and yourself don't alter the truth even if you're given a tablet or paid by the company. I think we keep trying to protect against the lie that getting paid to do our jobs causes us to lie. It's a reality that people lie, but youtubers that SELL a companies products should be thought of as professionals able to be paid like professionals and still produce honest, trustworthy reviews.

@@ARandomMonitor I absolutely agree that the likelihood of falling into the trap is greater when you think you are "untrappable". My main point is that getting paid to do a review doesn't equal biased untruthful review. I believe we are on the same page on that point, but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm saying that it can be done correctly with intelligent checks and balances without resorting to "reviewers should only review products they personally pay for". I don't think that's a sustainable business and if it is, that's because in some roundabout way the reviewer IS still getting paid for the review even if it's not that company paying them. Which can still cause bias.
Here is the long and short of it for me. I've seen countless people never even start attempting to do good things because their motivation wasn't perfect yet. It's likely it never will be perfect or that we will ever actually be unbiased completely. But THAT'S OKAY. That's why we watch multiple reviews from various biases or just find someone who has the same biases as us so we end up with a product we like. 😊
Btw, you didn't come across at all as angry or insulting. you made a lot of good points. Hopefully I also don't come across wrong. Capitalization used to emphasize the words not to text yell.
Brad, sorry about highjacking your kind and considerate comment to Crowne Prince. Was kind of hoping you would read my comment and reconsider your position on doing reviews. May be beneficial to get a bunch of us tech reviewers into a conversation somewhere and establish some education and standards to improve the situation for everyone, reviewers and manufacturers.

Tablet Pro Tablet Pro I do agree people need to make money, people have to eat, after all. The place that money comes from can affect the work you do though. When it’s through a group of viewers who you’re providing the reviews for, in general that provides a better environment for unbiased - or at leased consumer biased - reviews. Granted it’s not a guarantee, and I can think of a few examples where following the fans has actually caused it’s own issues, but it’s a better position at least.
Totally agree with you on the motivation bit. I’d love to make art but trying to draw anything is very stressful for me because I can see what I want yet feel how utterly awful my own work is, and there’s nothing immediate I can do about it.
On a somewhat related note, I wish that was the focus of shows that try to tell you you can do anything. Everyone already knows it takes hard work to get what you want, but if you tell a strong artist to draw with their off-hand, even they aren’t going to last long. They have the exact same almost physical repulsion to their work that I do when I try to draw, it’s crazy. There’s something about that they managed to get over at one time, and that’s the part people like me need help with.

Another reason why I find it difficult to trust youtubers who review tablets is the fact that some will inevitably say only positive aspects of the product to please the company in hopes to receive more free products in the future. It's honestly disheartening to see up and coming art channels make reviews and give high praise to products that honestly don't deserve it because they are worried about their bottom line.
I honestly tend to just look for random amateurs who upload reviews for products I want because I know they spent their own money and they tend to be waaaay more honest about the products themselves.

    • @bousoupanda4980

@Ath Collins I don't have a specific channel because any channel dedicated to reviews are probably biased anyways. Just look for reviews of tablets/products you're interested but make sure the user has actually paid for it that way you'll know they are invested.

The pen tip was so wobbly (it feathered way too much) and the surface was far too smooth -> which may be great for gaming like OSU, but for the love of god, try to do a lot of detailed freehand drawing on that thing and you'll get a cramp because you need to focus mind and muscles thrice as usual. The 8k pen pressure for a pen tablet may be nice, but that won't do justice if the drawing haptics are just crap.

Amazon and sites like that have surprisingly loose rules on reviews. I work for a construction company and we've had reviews removed from our Yelp pages just because the customer said that we asked them to write a review (we didnt tell them what to say or how to rate us in any way). I've heard about some products on Amazon having terms attached with the "free product" that can be shocking restrictive like requiring perfect scores and crap like that. They want an artist to do $1000 in advertising for them in return for a $100 product. This is why im always suspicious of any online review videos where someone just rambles on about how perfect their product is.

You would sign up and get review copies of the games you wanted to review, but when your video was up Nintendo would get like 2 thirds of the money that video makes and not to mention they could just terminate your program if you said something they didn’t like. The alternative was to put a review up without the program only for it to be copyrighted by Nintendo allowing them to get all the money.

Oof, sorry you had to deal with that BS. My understanding is that this is pretty common with companies throughout the tech industry, not just with drawing tablet companies. It's a disgusting practice, what they do, and if it's not illegal already then it really should be.

It might just be a recent "major uptick" in the visibility of tech' companies... BUT I think it's worth pointing out that marketing practices have been shady as hell for generations across the board.
That's not to say every company out there is full of BS just because they approach you... There are genuinely decent people EVEN in marketing.

As someone in PR/Marketing, I need to point out that any company requesting you purchase the product yourself on Amazon, and does not request you disclose in your review that you were compensated for the tablet is breaking FTC guidelines. For anyone working with a company, if there is compensation or even the hint that there might be compensation for your review, that needs to be disclosed upfront. Verbally and at the start if it's a video. Clearly worded so even your grandma would understand if it's a posted review. Any company that's not asking you this - worse, any company requesting that you don't do this - is a shady player and you ought to report them to the FTC by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP

@Ath Collins I don't think it matters that much when coming to choosing from intro level Wacom stuffs. If you feel it fits your need, just go ahead. But if you are asking which size to pick, you shouldn't run into any issue with the small size unless you are on a large 4K display, and smaller means more ergonomic. Though if you already feel difficult writing smaller text you might want to get a bigger one.

I only changed my pen nibs twice and even then there are no noticeable scratches on the surface. Compare that to it's equivalent Wacom intuos which costs twice as much with half the buttons missing (huion h950p has 8 wacom int has 4) also has a smaller surface area and pen pressure is also low. Just take care of your devices. I clean it every use and store it in its box everytime im done using it.

Huion seems to have 50/50 chance of getting a quality tablet and when the tablets aren’t the good ones they seem to suffer from serious issues (one comment says theirs caught fire). I also personally use the Wacom Intuos in the small size and It is amazing (feels natural, high quality, bluetooth, tilt support and a good size for what I draw) I don’t have issues with the fact it has only 4 buttons since I don’t use shortcut keys. Though it seems to really depend on what side of 50/50 spectrum you’re on.

      Hi! Sorry for promoting.
      I’m an aspiring digital artist.
I create my art using my phone and my bare fingers. I would really appreciate if you could visit my channel!
      Thank you so much!❤️

This happens to a lot of reviewers, not just tablets. I only review what I'm too cheap to buy myself, although I'm not surprised there's a reputation developing around this kind of trade. You can usually tell who's being a completely dishonest mouthpiece for the companies' marketing campaigns. But good on you for making this video, warning both people looking to buy, and people looking to review.

This isn't an attempt nor a paid thing to mention.
But i like IBIS Paint app on Android and Iphone (i use iphone for it's Pressure sensitivity mechanic only available on iphone) that has many options to use and good material/ background material patterns for a simple background.
I wish they make a PC an Mac download for it. but i got no luck. it has a free unlimited time trial with limited brushes.
But the full thing is like, $7 one time purchase per account for all brushes . there is like 3 other options but that's a monthly subscription which i don't believe it's worth it. only gives Tone Curve, gradation map and cloud.
Just give the app a try and play around with it. if it's not your liking, then that's fine. your choice. If you do like it, try the $7 one. I think it was worth the cash.

I use ibisPaint X for art and animation (which also uses other apps) and I love it, and don’t have to pay anything (I just watch the video for the extra brushes).

In honest truth, what tablets that you've reviewed were actually decent in your opinion?

Holy crap. I never realized that this is what companies were doing to artist, it’s sick. I’ve always dreamed of getting sent Tablets to review because to me it means that you’re a recognizable artist, but now that I’ve seen this, I don’t want to get recognized. Thanks for making this video.

Now, I demand a cookie for this insignificant consideration!

thank you for this video so much. AFTER 3 YEARS, I finally saw in your vid what the iron ring thing was for in my pen stylus box. I been trying to remove the original tip from my pen for YEARS. Then I saw you just pinch it with the almuinium and pull it. I never knew. Thank you so much. I might make my own video on just that. Idk Im 18 and young, that really blew my mind. I thought the ring was to just hold all the other plastic color options for my pen. Thank you. Life saver

Damn that’s a lot of BS to deal with. An art supply manufacturer recently asked if they could send me a package of their products. They only asked for me to tag them in a pic on instagram when I receive them. I’m already a consumer and fan of their products, so this is a no-brainer.

At the end of the day, for most people, a tablet you get at aliexpress will do. They also sell the same on Amazon.

Thanks for this, it feels like the seed of a shady expose on product review practices on UA-cam. I knew it could be fishy, but particulars like this are cool to hear.

My parents got me a Huion tablet some years ago and at the time I got it I mainly used it for osu!. It was fine for that purpose, but when I recently got into digital art, I noticed that I just needed something more. I do plan to get an iPad Air 4th gen with the apple pencil when it does come out because I trust that Apple can create a better drawing experience (for me at least since I'm too deep into their ecosystem) than any Huion can. I do plan to do more things other than art on the iPad (notes, school work that can be done on it, content consumption, stuff like that), but the art aspect of the iPad is drawing me closer and closer to getting one. The tablet I have is the Huion H420 and I just don't really like using it for art.

Your Brutal Honesty is only going to help many people who are passionate about drawing. And I am glad that you exposed some companies who exploit such new customers. Hats off to you. Great Job!👍
