You can tell Chris is feeling like a lot of other people, cars just aren’t what they used to be. They are amazingly fast and easier to drive but I think that’s the problem. There’s just not as much feel or emotion anymore

I think Chris knows that the SuperCar Pressure on Ferrari is growing from other Manufacturers and Ferrari can't really afford to be out-speeded so to speak and the SF990 raises the speed & overall performance bar -- The 500 Horsepower Car Chris is talking about probably shouldn't have a Ferrari Badge on it -- it sounds like he wants a currently available Lotus Evora.

Honestly 95% of the customers aren’t car lovers, just normal people who don’t care about playfull, driving experience etc as much. They just wanna own a supercar to show, brag a bit. 4 wheel drive makes the car way easier to drive (fast) and adds so much performance and thus bragging rights. I personally like this car, I like Ferrari’s innovation attempts and I like the way they can split their car market producing either old-school style berlinettas, legends like the LaFerrari, and cars that are more focused on new technologies and innovations. In the end if Ferrari makes “500hp berlinetta with manual gearbox” people will criticize it to be too past-focused and lacking of evolution, when Ferrari produces innovative cars people still gonna complain. One is a (true) racecar for the road while the T50 is all about driver engagement, Manual with a high revving V12. Both are great in their own respects. In terms of performance, the Valkyrie will be far ahead of the T50.

Joel Schembri I’m not mad at that. I actually preferred the Portofino with the the top up. Now that the Roma is out, it made the Portofino obsolete to me. Now the Roma has the DNA of a lot of the classic Ferraris and I always wanted a 456MGT/612 looking car with the 2 seater configuration of the 550Maranello. So its a dream come true in my perspective.

The only new car I'm really interested in and exited about more than anything else is the GM T50. That is the essence of a sports car and it renders cars like sf90 pointless. It does cost a bloody lot of money though. Hope I'll see Chris driving it.

I agree about the looks. This is the fastest or one of the fastest cars in the world and it looks very "light" and it makes it underrated. This car is no joke.

couldn't agree more with Chris' ending statement. Between 400-500HP is a sweet spot for actual usable power in real life and day-to-day driving that you can have a total blast with. Especially with a manual gearbox, I don't care if some electronic thing can shift faster as I'm having more fun over here with my manual thank you
Chris gets it. its not about how quick it will go round, its about really DRIVING the car, feeling it. these new things, while impressive, are so clinical in how they go fast, you feel like youre just along for the ride while the car does the work instead of YOU commanding the car with talent. now i dont think they should stop making stuff like this, its pushing tech forward, but they could also make some simpler, more driver focused cars that have that raw nature we love.
Thanks for the comment about starting up quietly next to the neighbours! I love it! The noise disturbance aspect of vehicles (especially H-D's) is an under reported and under appreciated problem.
He's talking about if the new NSX was manual and styled by ferrari with the badge to top. Just enough electricity but not overly complicated in driving. When he drove it and called it a Baby 918, it just made sense.
That's the entire issue, you've summed it up! They don't "have to". By all means, the car Chris whipped up, the 950kgs, 500hp, RWD Ferrari with a small hybrid system could be considered a "better" car to *drive*.

I appreciate how hard Ferrari is working. They're giving the world a lot of cars. I think that's a good thing instead of a brand holding onto one or two cars that they've held onto for nearly 8 years.
Chris at the end described an F40 on a diet with some electricity. I remember when the F40 came out and Enzo wanted it sub 500bhp because he felt that average driver couldn’t not manage that amount of power. Now it’s double and without the electronics it’s almost undriveable for Joe citizen. Go back to the future.
"it looks like a normal car" 😂 I don't about you, but this car doesn't seem normal at all to me. A Nissan Micra is normal, not this car. Also... I think he was being very negative about the sf90. We get it, he likes light, fast, agile sportcars with a manual gearbox. However, he could have said something positive about the fact that Ferrari is trying to keep up with modern day environmental issues by electrifying its models, which is an effort for a good cause. He could have stressed a bit more the fact that this car is faster than a Veyron on a straight line, and almost as fast a Senna on a track, despite costing a lot less than a hypercar. He could have said that it combines hypercars performances with relatively low emissions. He could have said that despite the extra weight the car is still exceptionally nimble, and also very safe and easy to drive thanks to the AWD and the electronics. He could have said that the engine is a masterpiece, that the steering is great (well he did say that he kinda likes it after all), that the brakes are great, that the aero is great (and also well hidden), that the gearbox is incredibly fast... He could have said that it's still a relatively comfortable car despite the stellar performances... He talked about how little the trunk is... But who in the world buys a Ferrari for the trunk?! If someone has 500K to spend on a car, they'd have no problem buying a small station wagon to carry the luggages. I don't know... I feel like there are so many exceptional things about this car that could have been said, rather than just saying "I want Ferrari to make lighter cars with a manual gearbox. This one has no trunk. It has no soul. It looks ordinary. But it's very fast". That engine alone would give soul to any car... He might not be fond of the car, but at least he could have acknowledged a bit more that it's still an exceptional car, even though it's not his "type". Besides, the future is electric, and it's gonna be hard to make extra light cars with the weight of the batteries, so we'd better get used to it.
Ferrari isn't trying to keep up with modern day environmental issues so much as trying to keep up with Porsche and McLaren. Hybridizing cars in this category has almost nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with canceling out turbo lag via electric torque assistance. I don't disagree with you that he was being quite negative about the car, but I think his point is basically that even a driver like him cannot use all of an F8 Tributo's performance on the road, so making an even faster model in a similar space is pointless - other than to "one-up" their competitors in the numbers game. Add to that fact you can't even take it on a drive across Italy because it has zero luggage room (courtesy of the tech that makes it faster) and it's hard to make a case for it. Hybrid hyper-performance makes sense in a LaFerrari - people don't generally want to drive those cross country, but the Berlinetta models they do, and with this one they really can't.
@@alexclark6777 for sure the hybrid system is useful to make more powerful cars... But I don't think the v8 engine of the f8 Tributo/sf90 stradale has turbo lag issues to fix. It has been applauded for the instant response multiple times and it won engine of the year 3 year in a row. If Ferrari only wanted to keep up with Mclaren/Porsche it could have released a hardcore old-school supercar like the Senna/765lt, by making the f8 tributo lighter, more powerful and with a more aggressive aero. That would have been enough to keep up with Porsche and Mclaren. Instead they chose to go in a different direction. They chose to release a plug-in hybrid, with some purely electric autonomy. It's different from the LaFerrari, which wasn't plug-in. This sf90 is actually a real hybrid and if driven in the city, it has low emissions. Imo it's an effort from Ferrari to make more sustainable cars, and to pave the way for other electrified models. Just like Porsche released the Taycan, Ferrari is trying to slowly adapt its model range to electricy, which is gonna be crucial for its survival in the future. That being said, I still can't take seriously the luggage argument. I mean... Most supercars have ridiculously little trunks anyway. It's not like the Mclaren 720s/f8 tributo have a real trunk. Basically, it's barely enough to carry a single suitcase. The Huracan is even worse in this department. So... It's not that much of a loss. You can can always put the suitcase in the passenger seat of the sf90 stradale, or behind the seats. No big deal. Someone who owns a sf90 stradale can enjoy driving it across Italy anytime he wants. The owner of such a car is probably a multi-millionaire at least, so even if he/she has serious luggage to carry with him/her, he can always pay a taxi to carry the luggage anywhere he/she wants, while he enjoys the sf90. Or he/she can always ask his wife/husband to follow him/her with a station wagon. In any case, money is not gonna be a problem for the owner of a sf90 stradale. Besides, nobody uses the sf90 stradale as a family car. I doubt that the owner of such a car would use it to go the supermarket. There are other cars to do these things. This car is meant to be driven on twisty roads for the pleasure of driving it, or on a track. Of course practicality is not its strong suit, and it doesn't need to be. And the other supercars with their ridiculous trunks are not that practical either... I do agree about the fact that it's impossible to reach the limits of such a car on a regular road. That applies to most supercars though. I think that not even a base 992 Carrera S can be taken to its limits on everyday roads. However, I think that the sf90 is still enjoyable to drive even at "low" speeds (below 150 kmh), and if someone really wants to stretch its legs there's always the track (or a German autobahn). Overall, I think he could have pointed out a lot of positive things instead of focusing so much on the negative aspects of this car. Anyway, Chris has the right to say whatever he thinks, he earned it

Well, you can. 15 years ago I drove a completely electric conversed lotus Elise with a 4 speed manual gearbox. In the time it was very special, build by Detroit electrics, a Dutch company. Amazing experience. You could drive away in 1th, 2nd, 3th and 4th gear. In first off course you had the most acceleration, but because of the torque it was possible to just drive in 1 gear (4th).
Honda made a Civic hybrid with a manual transmission. I'm guessing it depends if the electric motors are directly driving the wheels or just adding a torque fill to the driveshaft. Of course if it's directly driving the wheels you can do the fancy electric torque vectoring with it like the new NSX, but probably doesn't have the same mechanical feel anymore.
Same old same when he reviews a ferrari, too much electronics, not so good design, people cannot fully use them, bla, bla bla. Most of the people who buy these machines is because they can, they dont have to be professional drivers and they use it as much they enjoy. There are raw cars for pro drivers out there anyway. By the way this car looks great, killer on the track and the ferrari roma is stunning and NO, the aston martin looks like the old ferraris not the other way around, italians are pioneers in design.

@@trucker736 I think the old top gear got boring as they just kept rehashing things they had said hundreds of times before. Chris is much more interesting and when he talks about cars you have to listen. I don't really care for the other two.
I am on board with Chris that it should have been a hybrid RWD. When this car came out, its message to me was more like an obsession for 1000hp at a "somewhat" reasonable price. When I saw it does 1000hp thanks to mild hybrid, 150+ hp max to the front wheels, it doesn't feel right to me, and unnecessarily complex. Hybrid is a good idea and try, but if it were a light or mild hybrid RWD, true it wouldn't have made that much power (maybe 780-820hp), but it would certainly have been much lighter, way simpler and more efficient to build, more playful to drive, and the e-boost probably could have maintained max output for longer duration... It would probably have overlapped with the 812 lineup performance-wise and price-wise, though. Still, this car could have made a TON less sense if were an exclusive one-off, and thank god that's not the case.
Chris alone makes TG these days. I always wanted him to make it here after watching him on DR/Drive/CHOC etc over the years.

I personally like this car, I like Ferrari’s innovation attempts and I like the way they can split their car market producing either old-school style berlinettas, legends like the LaFerrari, and cars that are more focused on new technologies and innovations. In the end if Ferrari makes “500hp berlinetta with manual gearbox” people will criticize it to be too past-focused and lacking of evolution, when Ferrari produces innovative cars people still gonna complain. Just let it be, lovers gonna love, haters gonna hate.

One is a (true) racecar for the road while the T50 is all about driver engagement, Manual with a high revving V12. Both are great in their own respects. In terms of performance, the Valkyrie will be far ahead of the T50.

If a mclaren goes faster than a Ferrari it’s a revelation. When Ferrari dusts their track record by 1.4 seconds, it’s ‘too good’.

Joel Schembri I’m not mad at that. I actually preferred the Portofino with the the top up. Now that the Roma is out, it made the Portofino obsolete to me. Now the Roma has the DNA of a lot of the classic Ferraris and I always wanted a 456MGT/612 looking car with the 2 seater configuration of the 550Maranello. So its a dream come true in my perspective.

The only new car I'm really interested in and exited about more than anything else is the GM T50. That is the essence of a sports car and it renders cars like sf90 pointless.
It does cost a bloody lot of money though. Hope I'll see Chris driving it.

He sounds like a friend of mine, "When you've been on a $300m yacht 50 times (he worked for a very wealthy family), it just becomes a boat. When you've driven every Ferrari (apart from a Roma) or Supercar, i get the distinct impression he's starting to feel the same. Instead of falling in love with it, his opinion becomes somewhat cynical, which is a shame.

couldn't agree more with Chris' ending statement. Between 400-500HP is a sweet spot for actual usable power in real life and day-to-day driving that you can have a total blast with. Especially with a manual gearbox, I don't care if some electronic thing can shift faster as I'm having more fun over here with my manual thank you

Chris gets it. its not about how quick it will go round, its about really DRIVING the car, feeling it. these new things, while impressive, are so clinical in how they go fast, you feel like youre just along for the ride while the car does the work instead of YOU commanding the car with talent. now i dont think they should stop making stuff like this, its pushing tech forward, but they could also make some simpler, more driver focused cars that have that raw nature we love.

I appreciate how hard Ferrari is working. They're giving the world a lot of cars. I think that's a good thing instead of a brand holding onto one or two cars that they've held onto for nearly 8 years.
Chris at the end described an F40 on a diet with some electricity. I remember when the F40 came out and Enzo wanted it sub 500bhp because he felt that average driver couldn’t not manage that amount of power. Now it’s double and without the electronics it’s almost undriveable for Joe citizen. Go back to the future.

I don't about you, but this car doesn't seem normal at all to me. A Nissan Micra is normal, not this car.
Also... I think he was being very negative about the sf90.
We get it, he likes light, fast, agile sportcars with a manual gearbox.
However, he could have said something positive about the fact that Ferrari is trying to keep up with modern day environmental issues by electrifying its models, which is an effort for a good cause.
He could have stressed a bit more the fact that this car is faster than a Veyron on a straight line, and almost as fast a Senna on a track, despite costing a lot less than a hypercar. He could have said that it combines hypercars performances with relatively low emissions.
He could have said that despite the extra weight the car is still exceptionally nimble, and also very safe and easy to drive thanks to the AWD and the electronics. He could have said that the engine is a masterpiece, that the steering is great (well he did say that he kinda likes it after all), that the brakes are great, that the aero is great (and also well hidden), that the gearbox is incredibly fast... He could have said that it's still a relatively comfortable car despite the stellar performances...
He talked about how little the trunk is... But who in the world buys a Ferrari for the trunk?! If someone has 500K to spend on a car, they'd have no problem buying a small station wagon to carry the luggages.
I don't know... I feel like there are so many exceptional things about this car that could have been said, rather than just saying "I want Ferrari to make lighter cars with a manual gearbox. This one has no trunk. It has no soul. It looks ordinary. But it's very fast". That engine alone would give soul to any car...
He might not be fond of the car, but at least he could have acknowledged a bit more that it's still an exceptional car, even though it's not his "type".
Besides, the future is electric, and it's gonna be hard to make extra light cars with the weight of the batteries, so we'd better get used to it.
Ferrari isn't trying to keep up with modern day environmental issues so much as trying to keep up with Porsche and McLaren. Hybridizing cars in this category has almost nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with canceling out turbo lag via electric torque assistance. I don't disagree with you that he was being quite negative about the car, but I think his point is basically that even a driver like him cannot use all of an F8 Tributo's performance on the road, so making an even faster model in a similar space is pointless - other than to "one-up" their competitors in the numbers game. Add to that fact you can't even take it on a drive across Italy because it has zero luggage room (courtesy of the tech that makes it faster) and it's hard to make a case for it. Hybrid hyper-performance makes sense in a LaFerrari - people don't generally want to drive those cross country, but the Berlinetta models they do, and with this one they really can't.
@@alexclark6777 for sure the hybrid system is useful to make more powerful cars... But I don't think the v8 engine of the f8 Tributo/sf90 stradale has turbo lag issues to fix. It has been applauded for the instant response multiple times and it won engine of the year 3 year in a row. If Ferrari only wanted to keep up with Mclaren/Porsche it could have released a hardcore old-school supercar like the Senna/765lt, by making the f8 tributo lighter, more powerful and with a more aggressive aero. That would have been enough to keep up with Porsche and Mclaren.
Instead they chose to go in a different direction. They chose to release a plug-in hybrid, with some purely electric autonomy. It's different from the LaFerrari, which wasn't plug-in. This sf90 is actually a real hybrid and if driven in the city, it has low emissions. Imo it's an effort from Ferrari to make more sustainable cars, and to pave the way for other electrified models. Just like Porsche released the Taycan, Ferrari is trying to slowly adapt its model range to electricy, which is gonna be crucial for its survival in the future.
That being said, I still can't take seriously the luggage argument. I mean... Most supercars have ridiculously little trunks anyway. It's not like the Mclaren 720s/f8 tributo have a real trunk. Basically, it's barely enough to carry a single suitcase. The Huracan is even worse in this department. So... It's not that much of a loss. You can can always put the suitcase in the passenger seat of the sf90 stradale, or behind the seats. No big deal. Someone who owns a sf90 stradale can enjoy driving it across Italy anytime he wants. The owner of such a car is probably a multi-millionaire at least, so even if he/she has serious luggage to carry with him/her, he can always pay a taxi to carry the luggage anywhere he/she wants, while he enjoys the sf90. Or he/she can always ask his wife/husband to follow him/her with a station wagon.
In any case, money is not gonna be a problem for the owner of a sf90 stradale.
Besides, nobody uses the sf90 stradale as a family car. I doubt that the owner of such a car would use it to go the supermarket. There are other cars to do these things.
This car is meant to be driven on twisty roads for the pleasure of driving it, or on a track. Of course practicality is not its strong suit, and it doesn't need to be. And the other supercars with their ridiculous trunks are not that practical either...
I do agree about the fact that it's impossible to reach the limits of such a car on a regular road. That applies to most supercars though. I think that not even a base 992 Carrera S can be taken to its limits on everyday roads.
However, I think that the sf90 is still enjoyable to drive even at "low" speeds (below 150 kmh), and if someone really wants to stretch its legs there's always the track (or a German autobahn).
Overall, I think he could have pointed out a lot of positive things instead of focusing so much on the negative aspects of this car. Anyway, Chris has the right to say whatever he thinks, he earned it

Well, you can. 15 years ago I drove a completely electric conversed lotus Elise with a 4 speed manual gearbox. In the time it was very special, build by Detroit electrics, a Dutch company. Amazing experience. You could drive away in 1th, 2nd, 3th and 4th gear. In first off course you had the most acceleration, but because of the torque it was possible to just drive in 1 gear (4th).
Honda made a Civic hybrid with a manual transmission. I'm guessing it depends if the electric motors are directly driving the wheels or just adding a torque fill to the driveshaft. Of course if it's directly driving the wheels you can do the fancy electric torque vectoring with it like the new NSX, but probably doesn't have the same mechanical feel anymore.
Forget the SF90, the F8 Tributo is an epic development of the V8 supercar.
Plus I kinda think that car looks better.
Same old same when he reviews a ferrari, too much electronics, not so good design, people cannot fully use them, bla, bla bla. Most of the people who buy these machines is because they can, they dont have to be professional drivers and they use it as much they enjoy. There are raw cars for pro drivers out there anyway. By the way this car looks great, killer on the track and the ferrari roma is stunning and NO, the aston martin looks like the old ferraris not the other way around, italians are pioneers in design.

They essentially perfected the supercar with the 458 and have been sliding backwards slowly ever since, making them uglier and pointlessly faster.

When this car came out, its message to me was more like an obsession for 1000hp at a "somewhat" reasonable price. When I saw it does 1000hp thanks to mild hybrid, 150+ hp max to the front wheels, it doesn't feel right to me, and unnecessarily complex.
Hybrid is a good idea and try, but if it were a light or mild hybrid RWD, true it wouldn't have made that much power (maybe 780-820hp), but it would certainly have been much lighter, way simpler and more efficient to build, more playful to drive, and the e-boost probably could have maintained max output for longer duration... It would probably have overlapped with the 812 lineup performance-wise and price-wise, though.
Still, this car could have made a TON less sense if were an exclusive one-off, and thank god that's not the case.
