    Emily, I understand the memories generated by the smell of auto paint. In a similar way, the smell of Hoppe's #9 gun oil always reminds me of my dad and my grandfather.

    Quick tip: If you have touch up's or runs that you want to take the high spots off before rubbing, take two box cutter blades. First one will get a single layer of masking tape around each end leaving a open section in the middle of the blade. Second one gets the same but this time use two layers of tape. You have just made two scraping tools! Use the two layer blade to gently start removing the top of your high spot by keeping it close to 90 degrees to the job and slowly scraping (not cutting) it over the raised section with the open section of the blade until it is running on the tape. Now using the blade with a single layer of tape to run that down the same way until it does the same. You will now have a high spot/clear run that is no thicker than your masking tape and will give you a better chance of finishing the job without rubbing through any of the surrounding area while still having a huge high in the middle. This has worked for me for years and has saved my bacon on everything from cars to 40 million dollar boats. If you are unsure grab a old car door or what ever and give it a go first just make sure that your paint is fully cured first so you don't peel it out or have chunks break out.....yeah, don't ask me how i know..! It is easy as once you get it.

    • @robjohnston5292
      @robjohnston5292 4 роки тому

      That's excellent advise, I've never tried it with masking tape on the ends, but it makes perfect sense. Now, if I just had a vehicle that was worthy of spending time on taking care of rock chips.

    I wet sand the spot with 1500, then hit it with some course rubbing compound. Then do entire panel with mild rubbing compound, then polisher. Get rid of the ugly every time. Just a lot of work but worth it. We all have time during quarantine.

    As to the mystery paint dabs on the A-pillar, maybe they were unnoticed fingerprint / glove print smudges from the painter on a previous touchup.
    I bet you'll like the can-gun adapter. I have the rustoleum can gun that I use all the time, and it makes spraying paint much easier and more controlled, at least to amateur-painter me.

    Now that you've touched up the surface and the paint has cured a few days/weeks, take some 1200 grit wet dry sand paper and some soap and water with a rubber sanding block. Wet the paper and lightly work the paper over the locations, 45 degrees, then 45 degrees the opposite direction. Keep the paper wet the entire time or it will scratch.

    Great touch up job Emily. it just goes to show that sometimes it takes a woman's touch to make things better. I know that touching up paint chips is very time consuming, but well worth it in the end. Can't wait to see how the spoiler turns out. I like the Audi, they're good looking cars. In the future you can actually forgo the clearcoat coat. Simply clean the rock chip area thoroughly with 91% alcohol. Apply a small amount of paint into the chip. Drag a plastic razor blade across the applied paint to level. Let the paint dry for 24 hours. Then wet sand, and polish. Thanks for the great vid. STAY SAFE! 🍻

    I bought the exact same paint brand a couple of months ago. I am currently doing the exact same thing with my car and rock chips. I bought the pen instead and it looks a little globby. I did not even put the clear coat on because it would probably lock in the globbyness of the paint. I don't know if my paint was a perfect match will see when I start the next steps. So far I wished I bought the little jar they were using instead of there pen touch up.

    I fill the chip with an angled cut flat match stick using made up paint spray can from Napa with my paint code, I spray a bit in a spray can lid and dab the match stick to fill the chip in layers. Then using 400-2000 grit paper, I wet sand. For my sand paper size, I use a paper punch to cut the piece so it can fit on the rubber eraser of a pencil using 2 way tape. If I need more paint to build it up, I repeat my procedure. Then finally buff out with a finishing compound and wax.

      Well the next day the sales rep comes over and looks at the wheels and swears than goes, five minutes later the shop chief mechanic come over and starts laughing after seeing the wheels. I asked what was so funny and he tells me i painted the wheels industrial Yellow and not AG yellow, well that was the last time i was asked to do a paint job.
