"The Cartwrights challenge an arrogant and cruel British prizefighter, the Duke, and his alcoholic manager to a bout with John Heenan (the Benicia Boy), after the Cartwrights' meek friend J.D. gets pulverized by the Duke in a bar-fight. J.D. is adored by saloon girl Marge, but he has been too shy to return her affections. While the Cartwrights wait to see if Heenan will actually take the bout and come from San Francisco, the Duke pursues Marge and assaults her when she rebuffs him. When the manager comes to Marge's rescue, he too is beaten up by the Duke (who, it turns out, is the manager's brother). Infuriated by all this, Hoss Cartwright himself challenges the Duke, and knocks him out in the fourth round of a bare-knuckle fight refereed by Sheriff Roy Coffee. The Duke and his brother-manager reconcile in the humility of defeat, then learn that the Benicia Boy will accept the proposed bout, but only the Duke comes to San Francisco. Hoss is a powerhouse. I love on one episode the boys were putting a large windmill in and Hoss was doing the heavy lifting part of the job, and the bros said lift harder, I thought it was funny when Hoss replied, If I lift any harder I will be lifting up the world. 😂

I agree, May, Adam is really missed. The series is just not the same thing w/out him, regardless of how good the other three really area. Somehow, he brings an intelligence and serious angle that the other three just do not match.
I don't usually like fighting but I was so cheering Hoss on!!! Good episode!

I love how in these episodes Ben always shows great concern for his sons' welfare and is greatly annoyed when he is prevented from going to their side.
With Robert Altman as the director, you know it will be good. So it was. Altman also started out with The Rifleman, and sure enough, damned great. Then his inimitable movies..
Ben Cartwright always reminds me of my father though he wasn't particularly a fighter. My dad was always a man in every sense of the word and even in failure. Hope I die half as good.
Hoss has always been one of my favorite, he definitely beat him down knowing he didn't even ever take boxing

That one scene where Hoss and Little Joe are comforting JD reminded me of an almost exact same scene on Little House with Michael Landon and Merlin Olsen (who does bear a resembleance to Dan Blocker now that I think about it).
Of this episode. I loved seeing the tall arrogant boxer get brought down to size by way of Hoss Cartwright. Three cheers for Hoss!!! Nothing is more uglier in a person than arrogance. I enjoyed watching Hoss beat the crap out of the boxer.

A great Bonanza episode because it shows when a bad guy during the during the show becomes a good guy at the end you rarely ever see that on TV and in the movies

That guy could hit and he could also maneuver. But he couldn't take a good punch. He had to stay untouched to win. As soon as Hoss was able to lay into him it was all over for him. After Hoss hit him a few good times he laid there in the corner like a scared rabbit afraid of what was coming next. The woman beater got just what he deserved. It's just too bad Hoss didn't get to complete that last round to really beat the living crap out of the bully.

Duke calls the Sheriff “ Constable “ When Hoss gets on his Horse, the Horse bends in the middle as Hoss is too heavy for the Horse. The boxing fight between Duke and Hoss is great !

The Duke is a better boxer than actor. He has legitimate form and power. Too bad he didn't try professional boxing - he would've come up in a weak heavyweight era and possibly could've gotten far.
Nice episode. It's about the Duke of London. It's about the game of boxing. A match between the Duke and Hoss Cartwright. Atlast Hoss won the match. Storyline is perfect. Amazing show. Good to watch.❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊🎉🎉

Spoiler alert Hoss congratulated by everybody. But his eyes are fixed on a beaten man, they’re screaming at him and congratulated, and he doesn’t enjoy the victory because he said the man that was down was all alone. Think about that
This episode is one of genius in it’s writing and directing notice when the boxer is fighting Hoss he uses short powerful jabs to piss off hoss as well as wear him down
Had he come out strong and fast like he normally does he would have beaten HOSS Again. He’s all alone

That guy playing the Duke had no muscle at all... no biceps, no triceps, no deltoids, no pecs, nothing.
Well...muscles can be a sign of strength and power. But not always. There are "little" people with no apparent muscles. But that can be a dangerous assumption. I have been in situations and workouts where my opponent did't seem to have any muscles. But found out the very, very hard way about speed, technique, cunning, and hidden power....never ever underestimate anyone. An Israeli pilot once said, "assume your opponent is the very best."

Funny how so many people absorb rather than observe any form of scripted fantasy. Almost as if we wished in some childish fashion we were in this script, playing a similar role. Truth be told that's exactly in an abstract fashion what our life has been like because we actually scripted our roles, our families roles, father, dad, mother, mom, brothers, and sisters we scripted directed, produced, and geography as well, all of it. For many different reasons and the fun is to be constantly curious what those reasons are?

This was a little too unrealistic to be a really good episode. Hoss, with no boxing experience beating a highly trained prizefighter. It needed something else to explain why Hoss could win, or have him lose.
Hoss was known for his nigh-superhuman strength and durability, but yes I'm afraid they had to carry him since the main cast usually has to win in the end, haha.

thats not really correct. I worked with people from USA in various countries. Sometimes they came across as very bossy with an attitude of 'we are paying, you have to do it the US way'. Brits are more pragmatic
