- Bonanza - Episode 54 - The Tax Collector - Jock Henry is a very likeable fellow. Ask anyone. When he's given the job of collecting taxes, his peculiar methods of figuring out what people owe causes everyone to reconsider.
The Tax Collector
Director: William Witney
Writer: Arnold Belgard
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 18 February 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
At the behest of a local bureaucrat, good-for-nothing Jock Henry (Eddie Firestone) becomes Virginia City's tax collector. Jock also becomes drunk with power, levying huge, unfair assessments against everybody in the vicinity. Thus it is when Jock is faced with a series of profound personal crises, no one in town will come to his aid-no one, that is, except Hoss Cartwright. Written on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"Accent is on the comedy in this Bonanza story as Hoss Cartwright gets caught up in trying to help his friend Eddie Firestone who is a hopeless schnook who can't hold down a steady job. Firestone would rather spend time on his racing mare. But that's impossible as both the mare Sally and his fire Kathie Browne are both in foal.
After trying any number of people Dan Blocker gets Firestone hired as an assistant tax collector by Russ Conway. Firestone does very well at the job, too well in assessing taxes including those on the Ponderosa.
Lorne Greene calls Firestone one of those 'sorry people' who are so lovable in their own helplessness that you get tangled in their mess trying to help them out. You have to connive and be sneaky with them and Ben Cartwright proves quite the conniver.
For those who like a little levity in their Bonanza this one is for you." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

“Big blue eyes and long bushy tail!” LOL
❤I was delivering your twins!!😂😂
Hoss: don't you worry ma'am you'll have a healthy youngun with big blue eyes and a bushy tail just like me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣 Hoss tries to close the broken gates. Such a gentleman.
And he's so gentle with the gates even though they're already broken and falling over 💞😆
Türkçeye cevir
Hoss probably left gates open a lot when he was kid so it's engrained in him to close them. I have the same conditioning with doors. Can't leave them open to this day.
Funny I'm goofy like that too.
Hoss and that falling apart gate, 😂😂😂😂
Such a cute episode. Hoss running back and forth lol
Hoss with his big heart could never hurt a fly! He's the best example of a gentle giant
Poor Hoss was cursed with a good heart.
Of a dunce
Your parents weren’t so bright giving you two first names LOL
@@franktrautman1863 ur mammy wasn’t bright she should have drank u
@@franktrautman1863 Straight speaking half fish half man?
That lady on the balcony watching the race shaking her butt was too funny!!!
Hoss and that gate. 😂🤣😂🤣
Mess was hilarious 💀😂
Yes I cried my eyes out at this one xxx♥️❤️
Another good example how, Hoss Cartwright is always helping out everyone that he meets. ❤
The writers of these Bonanza comedies deserve a gold medal. They are the funniest ever.
Good to see Hop Sing again.
DAN BLOCKER TRULY OWNED THIS EPISODE !
Opening and closing that stupid gate! 😂
Hoss was always gentle giant loved Cartwright boys
Loved the Way Hoss 'closed the gate' to break up a fight 🤣👍
Silly Hoss, gets roped into do anyone’s work!!! Too kind.
All the best episodes had Dan Blocker in them. Love Hoss.
Hoss, you're magnificent! 😘
Always good to have a comedy one once in awhile. Lightens up the regular schedule. Hoss starred this time. So much action and Kathi Browne always a sweet actor.
Kathie Browne later played Lara with Adam
The horse in a sunbonnet! Lol
This is my favorite Bonanza episode I really enjoyed it it was a fun show the little guy his wife and his horse could have been a spin-off of Bonanza
Awesome to hear that, thanks for watching! 🤠👌🎬🍿
This episode is perhaps one of the best - certainly in the top ten.
The creaky gate is the greatest running joke in this episode 😂
Why does Hoss always deliver the babies? 😂
He's always been good with tending to animals and people in need. His mother was the same way. Watch the episode "Inger, my love."
Loved this! Hoss was such a gentle giant!
Hoss is my absolute favorite Cartwright! 🥰
That gate was symbolic of all the gatekeepers of this realm, and the notional power they exert by sheer force of habit, kind of like taxes.
Fun episode with Hoss in great form as midwife. Sole gripe: Not one shot of Adam, apart from the credits- Thanks for sharing
@@DowntownJulieB No doubt, though from 1962 good ol' Pernell had been threatening to leave coz he was getting older and didn't want to be the everlasting son to Lorne Greene. He felt BONANZA had to be upgraded
@@adrianovasconcelos2739 Roberts was right about the scripts -- very odd to have three sons still living with their father and taking orders from him! The older two were supposed to have been in their thirties and Joe, the interminable (and insufferable!) was an interminable adolescent who couldn't get grip on his ego.
Any episode with Hop-Sing is good also. I wonder how all the cooking and cleaning up happens when he is not there.
#1 cousin of Hop Sing (James Hong)
Hoss
@@ronleddy5131 Still alive @ 95. ♥️👍
Right up there with Flapjack Contest and Spring Time very funny. Thank you.
That was aewsome!
Great loved this one. Keep them coming thank u
That man is the definition of a Pinch Weasel!
Hoss delivers a horse
And a little jockey
So in the last episode, Ben keeps his cool even though one of his sons had been shot. But then he almost loses it when he's told that he owes $1600.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
ow much is $1600 in 1850 worth today?
$1,600 in 1850 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $64,424.41 today, an increase of $62,824.41 over 174 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 2.15% per year between 1850 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 3,926.53%.
Northern Dancer was a small quarter horse also , but man could that horse run ,
They had to break his leg to stop him .
And he still came in 2nd .
He sired many winning colts.
In fact everyone of his offspring were winners .
So there is some truth in this video .

The little lady knocked hoss on his behind with a broom. 😅.
Haha, when Hoss gets into the wagon with Mrs. Henry he sits on her dress.
Good boy hop sing
In this episode Kathie Browne played the part of Ellen Henry, wife of the tax collector. Before the beginning of the 5th season she was in one more episode, The Tall Stranger, episode 82 and Hoss Cartwright was interested in her as Margie Owens, the banker’s daughter. But by season five her luck changed.... Kathie Browne, who had already come to the Ponderosa twice in earlier seasons, got a recurring role in season five. She played Laura Dayton and became Adam’s love interest and eventual fiancé. But in the end she ran off with Will (Guy Williams)!
Yeah those cartright boys could never win with the women always lost them in the end in some way or another 🤔😉✌️
@@shawneenhammer4241 Thank goodness. We dont' need any nagging and taking over on the Ponderosa.
I knew it! *Slams fist* I came here just to see if she was the one who strung along my dear Adam and then ran out on him! I can't stand her!
Oh no its the old school IRS 😱
Nice episode. It's all about tax collecting and Mrs. Henry. Good to watch. Western Classics. My favorite episode.
Yes Yes " that lil insignificant miserable runt" she put her broom 🧹 on Jock Henry.
Lumber has never been cheap. Can see why one might steal it.
Great episode. Only cringey part was Joe Cartwright calling Hop sing good boy 46:29
YEs, horrible. But perfectly in character for Joe. Little twit.
Nice fam.show🤗
I keep forgetting this show ran throughout the '60s, no wonder there's so much riff raff background music playin.
"I would like to have a few words with you."
Ben probably said that a lot before he took his kids over his knee.
Yeah, that was said in one of the episodes by Adam to Joe, I think.
They really got a lot out of the song "Old Grey Mare" in this episode 😁. Do they ever explain where Adam is off to in this one? If so I missed it. Thank you for uploading and in such good quality!
Poor Hoss😆
Cute show 😍😍😍
Kathie Browne...later is back to act as Adam's bride to be. I recognized her by her voice.
Hoss you sure dig pretty. Not only post holes but 6 foot x 3 foot x 6 feet deep holes for planting bodies.
Beautiful episode, lovely👍 👌👌✌❤🥰😍😘
🎬❤️
Hi 🙋♀️ this is a very nice 👍🏻
Some character they had in this episode
Good "Boy" Hopsing? 😬
Ok. For me, it wasn't. Still watched it through, 'cuz it's Bonanza. Interesting how they used that trumpet on the music track at the beginning of the episode. There was a lot of Laurel & Hardy in this episode, like with the fence...
little guy has a man-crush on Hoss!
Unusual role for Eddie Firestone
No but you seem to, now go to your oven and check that fudge.

First irs that dangerous work
No one died!
Henry Corden (replacement voice for Fred Flintstone when Alan Reed passed) as the guy Jock lost his cattle to.
Yes
O' Hoss sure had his hands full between the wife and.the mare whew! Jesus help him. But he was a gentle and kind person. According to sources he was the same in real life. However that little weasel needed a good but whipping. Lol 😂😂😂
Joe was like Oh.....
And all my stimulus
When you see how often guns have been used in westerns, war, and crime movies threw the years i can't imagine how negligent some people were on the set of that Baldwin movie.poor girl died but it seems the blame gets passed around.
No accident .............
I wouldn't bet a dime against Big ol Hoss outrunning both of those horses, ha. And that silly gate, and the constant habit of closing the dammed thing every time anyone opened it, ugh. And that goofy tax collector, taxing for chicks not yet hatched, sounds like a dammed Democrat, ew. The laughs were fun, great episode, especially with all those wives chasing this goof down the street with their ropes, pitchforks, and garden spades, ha. 😂🤣😘
Professionally intitled victems are everywhere! BEWARE!!!
🙂❤
TOMFOOLERY
Animals have babies all by themselves every day. What's with the mother coddling.
Makes the show funnier. We have to give tv shows leeway for entertainment's sake.😉😎
Hoss: "Sure gotta raise some hands, dag burn starts are ganging up on me!" as he runs to the horse with a bucket of water lol
The wife is played by the same actress who played Hoss fiancee in another episode.
where is Sam Hill is Adam?!?!?!

תפטרו מהכתוביות!!!!!
You can turn them off. They are annoying and usually wrong anyway.
Zzbig valley
I enjoyed it until about the end, and then it got totally ridiculous that it wasn’t even funny
But it sure is a nice dream where rich people forget debts owed them, and even do chores at your place while delivering your babies (animal and human) :)
I completely agree, but the whole thing was ridiculous.
Jock will be a having 2 sons
First socialist in Virginia city.............
I hate when they call Hop-Sing boy... He was the only classically trained actor this show had...
Ben called his grown sons boys also. This show was not filmed in a time with ridiculous politically correct ideas.
@@user-pd7il3xz5j Nor woke ............
No wonder Pernell Roberts refused to be in this the worst silliest ep in Bonanza.
I doubt that he refuse to be in this wonderful episode of Bonanza!!
pernell roberts was a fool, conceited, arrogant, bland, arrogant, he thought he was better than anyone and if he didn't like the series because he agreed to do it, it would have been better if he had left the position to another actor with more enthusiasm than him
