Ep006 Sailing Portugal: Rio Guadiana, Wild Food and a Haul Out

- In this episode we sail to the Rio Guadiana, on the border of Portugal and Spain. Here we anchor 22 miles upriver and find wild food growing in abundance...olives, almonds, herbs, prickly pear cactus, quince, pomegranate and asparagus!
With many nationalities living on the river full time, this is a true liveaboard community, and a special place we felt right at home.
We then sail back to Faro ready for our winter haul out, before the work begins....

Always best to turn round and motor into the tidal stream and slowly allow yourself using throttle control to gently run astern towards a tight bridge, if you touch you can motor forward and away safely minimising damage

I like a short, flat keel; with supports you can easily sit on the mud of the eastern UK river beds as needed.
I'm a new follower of your channel. Thanks so very much for sharing your sailing experiences. I recognized the big black steel hulled Princes Mia in this video. I know of Princess Mia and her captain, Martijn Dijkstra, from their visits to Oriental, NC in the USA. Martijn is somewhat of a hero in Oriental. Truly a small world. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

brunsonr yes we know Martijn quite well now after meeting him in Portugal, he's great! Hopefully meeting him again in the Caribbean next month.
Risky move for such a nice boat . I would not attempt a bridge crossing without knowing 100 % of the clearance. You could side load the mast next time to insure safe passage . Take care, great Boat !

Excellent. I've just found your channel and caught up. I was supposed to be around the Faro area about now as my daughter is studying there. However, I'm out of the water in the UK about a year behind schedule. You are giving me some good ideas where to stop when I do get under way. You are also giving me the idea to treble check the holding tank fitment and everything to do with the toilet as yours seems to feature a problem every other episode. Very enjoyable videos - thanks for sharing.

Get up there and measure your mast Ben, you need to know your above ground draft just like its below draft!
Rewatching for a second time your vids. No I'm not bored but curious. What is in the deck box forward of the mizzen mast?
Why is it louvered?
Do you find that 2 heads are necessary, or would you prefer one? If you were to convert one, which would it be, the forward or aft head?

The one thing I find looking at these boats (victory 40 / Trintella lV) is the small galley. Do you find it a problem?
