brilliant advice, loads of thanks. I subscribed straight away. [el'sda2].
New painter here, but how would you paint white armor grimdark style, would the best be very light almost sky blue prime layer, grey zenithal, then finished with white for the armor layer, your thoughts?
@@codemaster6521 there isn't just one grimdark approach for white. depends what you want. but all the thought you put into priming is too much. if you are not doing anything with transparent paints...there is no need to. Once you applied an opaque layer of paint over a primer it doesnt matter much what the primer was.
Second: You can start from a white or off-white, shade it down, weather the edges like i did here. Or you can build up the white over a brown basecoat, like i did on the shoulderpad of my black templar e.g.
it all depends what look you want, how fast you want it to be, etc.
@@codemaster6521 also judging from your previous coment you are using the term zenital slightly wrong. "zenital highlight" or short "zenital" refers to something coming from above, as would daylight around midday. so typically you would apply a bright color from above. you seem to call anything shaded from below zenithal - which is probably not wrong, and sure, you can do that, but it's confusing because I was wondering "why would you spray a grey from above over white?".
There is something so incredibly satisfying when you start adding the brush work on top of the sponge chipping. The end result is just fantastic
The dust in the base and the feet looks really really good
You're take on Grimdark is amazing. And I appreciate how you emphasize multiple, different paths for what I want, asoppposed to just saying "do exactly what I do" MORE PLEASE
Amazing, everytime you make one of these I just wanna start painting, I really love your take.on the grimdark style because its done on purpose and not just slapped together
I love how you take a no nonsense fearless approach to your method being both efficient and versatile. Fail and fix on the go.
this is always what i imagin tabble dagamed space marines to look like, this is amazing!
DAMNIT! Every time this man releases a video I get a strong urge to start a new army...
OK, the Uhu blood was a new one for me. THX!
Use a glue that does not shrink too much on drying though. You can lose the dripping part if it shrinks back to the base or other anchor point. Can also be done with greens and browns for slime and gloop or just in clear droops for icicles.
Awesome video! No matter how many time anyone paint, there is always something to learn in your videos.. thanks man
This particular figure you've painted looks AMAZING!! I can't take my eyes off of it and it stirs the imagination! I can't believe how realistic it looks!
... But you forgot to paint the helmet laser. Seriously though, I can't believe how good that battle damage looks! And the light colored grit on the shoes takes it over the edge! Wow!
Fantastic work, as usual! I love how you cover up the blotched white with more coats of yellow, then cover that with white blotches. 😊
Good job. Beakies are the best and only true marines!
Thanks for the great video production quality. It is so inspiring to see the brush strokes so clearly.
Should join for the live streams where he paints these. He talks about what and why he is doing stuff and answers questions. Good fun and a good chat.
Inspiring! Love your chipping technique
this is gorgeous
Thanks!
Thanks a lot! Very kind of you!
Thank you, i am beginner and it's a good video for me
Yay, Friday and a Trov vid!
I like the one you put the x on much more tbh.
Great to see a Trovarion video and loved the use of colour. Chipping is something that can often be added excessively especially with the sponge. Less is better even in the grim dark style.
I thought the realistic looking Imperial Fist on the thumbnail was a drawing until I watched the video
I love this style! It's intense and quite realistic at the same time.
Inspired by this style I painted old Death Guard Nurgle champions and I loved the process. So... thanks for an inspiration!
Damn, now thats a warrior. Beautiful work
Subbed!! Very nice video! Just watched this video, and it was enough to tell me you are really good!
Very awesome video! Love it
I started using Tamiya white with their thinner after Cult of Paints recommendation, for zenithal. No speckling like the ordinary ink.
This , FW inks and liquitex inks, really nice whites for airbrushing
@@steffanisorensen7133 not as good as tamiya XF2 with tamiya thinner.
Its just so so so much better.
Nice yellow, need to find a mini to try it out on!
Great Paintjob and well described.
This is so cool. now i want to learn how to paint warhammer figures.
Wonderful brush control
I love this series your models are amazing. Finally inspired me to try it on some Space Wolves I've been needing to do for weeks now.
Emperors children next? Need some grimdark purple!
Great video, especially like the little section about the pitfalls of zenithal priming when using translucent colours over white. End result was also exceptional. Even your 'uninspired' black was better than I can achieve if I am on fire and in the zone!
I just fuckin cant, everytime i revisit your channel and watch a new video, I am blown away by some new technique//vision of painting space marines - you are a gem. Any chance for some CSM//black legion boys video?
I did a black templar, I am guessing that would be really similar? I also have a black legion CSM on my patreon, but in NMM.
Absolutely beautiful!
that marine looks... amazing :O started painging minis 3 months ago. mind blown. good work bro keep it up
I like the style you used in painting. I used a familair painting technique for a group of Iron Warrior's in 40k using current Horus Heresy models . As i found Tamiya metal paints and Army painter's worked very well for a Iron Warrior once you scracthed the model up pre-painting to apply the metal paint . As to represent some level of care went in to maintaining the armor . I found the Current Horus heresy models are quick to paint if you know how to quickly paint them .
5:15 I was looking around for an ambulance mate 💀 i heard that siren lol
This looks absolutely awesome! On top of all, this UHU-&Tip is really promising. I think my next Grundstock Thunderers need Rifles with Bayonettes^^
nice! and thank you!
I like the metal treatment- very simple and effective. Im definitely using that.
I always try to do some of these weathering things but I’m painting Grey knights rn so it’s kinda a net zero
I still think that blood for the blood god is an amazing blood effect for this scale
Very nice, will be witching this one multiple times.
Jeez christoph makes even a base look good
Love the yellow. Time to try another yellow marine.
Brush work on the paint wear is brilliant. I seem to remember when 40K first came out, they described the armor as plastic composite, not metal. Though for the jet pack I can see it. Either way, it's all good.
I know that not all of this is necessarily lore conform, but I don't really care, they are my own minis, I paint them the way I want ;) Also in a lot of newer artworks space marine armors look a lot more like this! The art on the horus heresy box is more or less exactly like this.
Great video. I really enjoyed it.
I did a Marines Maleviolent test mini using basically this scheme last month. Only difference was I used the enamel ranges Acid Yellow on upper portions of armor, and that stuff is nearly flourecent. Used the same dust on lower sections and base, so very similar.
Awesome tutorial as usual (and took taht sneaky discount code as well for some edpit bases bits as well!)
Ended up looking pretty grimdark there in the end :D Nice work mate. Hope your shoulder is feeling better.
Could be really cool, to see one of the new Khorne Baserkers in a Grim Dark Style, I know you did the red blood angel already, but how would you do the chaos one, and how would you do it differently?
Ni pico idea de que dice, pero pinta tan bien que es hipnótico.
Would love one with white armor. I’m about to paint my eldar in the paint scheme of the Retribution of Scyrah. And would like some damage to it as well
Would a pink Zenithol be a good idea with the contrast paint?
I mean, I know what you are refering to, but I don't paint like that, so I don't know. It's usually done with inks, you can try to substitute the ink with the contrast paint and see if it works, but why would you? it's more expensive for way less. just get the ink instead, which is proven to work (lots of videos online).
The chipping technique with sponge is good, but a tad uncontrollable, unless you remove as much paint as possible, to create micro-chipping with sponge. This is something that people like Uncle Nightshift, from the tank scale model community, does to create chipping in scale.
yeah, but this is not scale modeling, i know how to use chipping in that way and i even made a video about it (I even say that in this video). But i decided for this to use more color on the sponge to get a more worn appearance, so i don't care if there is huge chunks of paint going on and covering more area - as that is the aesthetic I wanted to go for. I did nothing "wrong" here, because I definitely did not want micro-chipping, but got exactly the visuals I aimed for, so I don't quite get your point.
@@trovarion his comment wasn’t a critique or criticism, it was just flushing out your use case with nuance. I can see how you might misconstrue it as critical, but he was just looking to contribute additional info for those that may want a variation of this style in scale. You misunderstood his intent pretty clearly imo. 😅
Looks amazing thank you for the video. If you ever get in the mood of white armor I would be curious to see your take on grimdark white.
Great video :) Loved it!
I find it much more time-efficient to apply decals before any form of weathering. Rather than do scratches over whole model and then having to re-do them after applying pristine decal.
Yeah, I usually do that. But that's just not applicable here, because I wanted the yellow to come through the decal and it's a pain to paint credible yellow chips over white, and even more so over black. so this was the fastest way.
Awesome!
Excellent video
Could use Tamiya white as your zenithal, over brown so you save a lot of time and no speckling
nice
Wow this space marine looks so real i can feel the emperor coming inside me
8:26. I noticed you had letters of the decal sheet still on the paper when you transferred it to the model. This is an easy way to get a stray letter on your model.
Brilliant video but I am surprised you haven't bought a mini vortex mixer yet to help shake your pots.
Have you done any videos on how you set up your wet palette? Your paint reacts on there in a way that I've never seen before!
What are you refering to?
@@trovarion the way that your paint holds its form and bubbles out on the paper. Mine seems to soak in slightly (but generally stay liquid on top of that layer.
@@samthelost i use baking paper, it's waxed, maybe that is the difference.
@@trovarion Could well be that, I'll give it a try and see what happens.
I looks so good!
lol it*
Trov going full time painter is the best thing that happened to the hobby
absolutely mindblowing, every single time
I will looking for grimdark white scars😁
Been painting yellow and especially orange for a few years (8k points worth now).
These new single pigment contrasts are sort of a miracle, never thought I’d see a “one coat” yellow.
In order to deal with dark tones quickly, you can undershade and preshade a white model with pink (very lightly!), then spray yellow on top.
For post shade or simply darker yellows, I use Vallejo’s ‘beasty brown’ and their dark umber for extremes.
For washing the model you can use reikland fleshshade or agrax earthshade mixed with lahman medium, which will give a more even coverage and the medium kills any shine the wash might give.
Personally I prefer GW’s screaming skull for highlights, but this mix looks great.
Check out Vallejo’s Metallic Air ‘exhaust manifold’ for a more grimdark metal color. There’s tons more.
Exhausting to paint yellow armies might be a thing of the past.
I feel grey knights are hard without making them look pristine
Such a crusty marine.... I love it
That marine has been through hell, didn't like the blood, the miniature looks great.
For your wet palette… do you like to have a visible layer of water on the edges or just a slight moisture to the wax paper? I have a hard time finding the right wetness when using my palette
Wait, sorry - what do you mean? Are you asking how high I am filling the water in my palette?
Do you glue the mini directly to the painted base or do anything extra to ensure it remains fixed to the base? Excellent video!
Yeah i pin it, since it already has the wire in it. Sorry, didn't show that.
It reminds me of your "did you drop it" meme
truuuuuue
Flawless armor space marines are acceptable only posing for box photos. Emperar bless If you face enemy in combat.
This man has never seen the shit by Mavericks paints
But that's a seriously good model still, I love the way it looks
The first thing to do is to show them war drama films so the miniatures are shellshocked
presioso
nice vid have you tried painting grimdark 30k world eaters
could you make a grimdark dark angel for the next vid
at 2:03 you mentioned you mixed the contrast paint with ak acrylic thinner - do you find that is a good alternative thinner/medium to GW contrast medium?
It's just because I shoot it to the airbrush and don't want it to clog. I also said that so that people know the dillution ratio (50% paint, 50% thinner).
I apologize if people have bugged you before (first time seeing the video and channel), but at 10:47 I noticed you wearing some type of magnifying thing on your glasses. What is this if you don't mind me asking?
See description of the video
@@trovarion Well dang, I'll admit I completely missed that. Thank you friendo!
I'm having a hard time painting GrimDark Night Lords. Blue comes off dark and highlited kinda muted.
Add rust and Mudd to their boots and put alot of grime on them .
have you seen ninjons video "Painting Your Warhammer Army In TWO HOURS A NIGHT" ?
he paints really awesome grim dark night lords in that video
I didnt like his NL paint job. I think I just wont have bright armor highlights. I'll have the metal trim and lightning be thr highlights
@@ramonrivera4604 Try grey highlights on the blues followed by a couple of blue glaze layers
Or a blue wash.
how long did 1 model take?
Cuanto mide esa mini?
It looks spectacular, but I can't help thinking that most space marines would probably find it somewhat heretical to allow their armour to fall into such a worn state, haha
i think thats a bit much water for your Wet palete Something gotta get on yojur minis
I used wet paletes like this for 15 years, trust me, I'm good.
@@trovarion sorry I’m in hospital my brain is literally hazy
I don't like Imperial Fists, but I like the general idea: it is urgently necessary for any Warhammer miniatures to break the feeling of "plastic toy soldiers".
very nice although i feel like this might have been one of those times where less is more. the chipped paint looked really good but also made it feel a bit busy.
1:00 To be fair, you can get a smooth looking zenithal without speckling artifacts, that would make a great undercoat for transparant colors on top. Basically what you said here was "my airbrushwork wasn't great, so that's a reason why I don't like working over a zenithal undercoat". So my question would be, what if your airbrushwork would have been smooth, would you have felt differently?
Ps I am sure you know Trov, but for others that are interested: do reduce speckling as much as possible, either thin you paint more, or increase the PSI (or both).
Apart from the speckling, I'd say there is colors that look ok with zenital...here that's not the case. The yellow looks too dull over black. Before anyone flames me: thats just my opinion. It's ok to like zenital.
@@trovarion currently experimenting with yellow marines myself and I totally agree that a black and white zenithal is not great for yellow. Especially if the yellow turns green on you (when it goes over black. That's why I am testing different undercoats like orange brown. Still remains difficult to get the right time of yellow I am after.
-How long do you need for a whole Army, with this technics?
-Yes...
Can we get grim dark 30k empoerers children. Just like this video.
Whats the blue haired mini?
Candy chan by neko galaxy
With the amount of scratches & paint damage on the armour, I’d like to see some more physical damage! Maybe a few of the nubs on the shoulder could be broken or off completely, & maybe using a knife you could gouge small chunks from the armour too!
I think your painting skills & creativity are amazing but I just think for the amount of scratch damage the figure has, it would also have some more serious damage too
Idon't like damage like that. I prefer to paint it.
I beams, not T-beams!
guy looks like he's been purging heretics for at least a century
