    That is absolutely the best description of modulation. I thought I was explaining it simply before (which I was an lots of people have understood it) but that was magic.

    Terrific how you start with the audio rate modulation not to bring about agro, metallic FM tones, but to show its capabilities as a kind of tonal 'thickener' before bringing the FM ruckus (3:33 - YEAH!!). I've never seen that before. An excellent illustration of the deep musical range of that kind of modulation and another extremely informative post. You really know your way around your synths - hats off.

    You are putting out some really great stuff here! Stuff that we probably couldn't find in the manual! Stuff that is only implied. Thanks for all the useful insights. I've had my deepmind for a while now but just haven't had a chance to sit down with it like you have. Now that I have been watching your videos I keep it close at hand and turn it on and go through some of the steps that you outline and then even try to take it a little further on my own. It's looking like the mod Matrix is going to be a very important part of learning how to coax things out of this instrument. Never really had a synth that had a mod Matrix on it. I can see how this can be very powerful. Thanks again. Keep all the good videos coming.

    Loving these videos! I don’t think I’ve ever seen an audio rate LFO cause the filter to make a tone of its own, let alone tracking that tone to the keyboard! How cool is that?! I had a DM12 when they came out and ended up letting it go. Been missing it ever since and I just ordered a DM6 which should be here Monday. Can’t wait to put this to use! Very nice vid and explorations! It is so weird that the filter’s flattering produces a sound. It should produce nothing when there is nothing to filter electronically, though it acts as if it imitates a physical mouth: a mouth needs a vocal chord vibration in terms to apply vowel-filter to it but if a mouth starts to shift its shape, let’s say, from “a” to “o” vowel in a tremendous speed, it will indeed push and pull some air (due to the difference of air volume in mouth for each vowel) and this will translate as an audible sound! Weird cool.

    If you assign Mod wheel as the modulator and LFO1 or LFO2 rate as the destination with maximum modulation in the matrix, when you turn the mod wheel all the way up does the LFO extend to the same audio range that it does when you did this trick with note number?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому

      Off the top of my head it should do yes. I don't know if I've tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work!

    • @smcumber
      @smcumber 6 років тому +1

      I got a Deepmind and I can confirm this works. You set the LFO rate slider to the highest rate or thereabouts (to offset the overall speed higher), then route the modwheel to LFO rate at full depth. You can then you use the modwheel to set the LFO at way higher audio rate speeds, without having to rely on Note # as a modulation source. This opens up a lot of possibilities, I was getting all kinds of crazy sounds out of it. I'd imagine you could do the same trick with the expression pedal, and then have cascading audio rate modulations!! (LFO1 -> LFO2 -> OSC's or VCF Freq). I find I like modulating the filter at full resonance with the audio rate LFO the most pleasing sound. Once you start using the mod envelope in conjuction and other stuff the possibilities are endless. You can also somewhat get some AM sounds by modulating the VCA with an audio rate LFO and sending an oscillator through it.

    I'm considering buying a DM. Wait and save for the 12, 12D or the 6? Would I really miss the 6 notes of polyphony? I think I would miss the additional octave. You obviously don't have an issue with it. I will play pop and rock hits from the 80s-90s and some recent stuff as well.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому +1

      If you are a keyboardist, either go for the 12, or the 12D with the controller keyboard of your choice. For my part, I'm not a great keyboard player so the money saved outweighed the requirement for more polyphony!

      No, I starting out and just learned how to spell MIDI. I've played guitar and bass for a while now. Synth is the next part of the journey. I'm loving it so far with Arturia V collection and a minibrute. DM12 is big on my wish list.

      Same here.First I started buying guitars,then pedals,then moved to basses,then audio equipment,then moved to synths,drum machines,monitor speakers,headphones,plugins,microphones jeeez it looked like it will never end.But soon,very soon I'm ending this journey.One more year left for me to finish all my g.a.s list and I'm done.I will have everything I need and will immerse finally in peace and will devote to make music,rather than to be buying stuff all the time.Man,one needs to know ,when to stop,otherwise he will never see himself with money.I really saw that I have a lot of stuff and I need to start using it.G.A.S is a serious sickness,an obsession,that people seem not to pay so much attention,it's passion ,hobby ect.But it's a disease.

    Hi! Simple question: How does it exactly works the Rate in LFO 2 in H-47 patch "Pad Chopper"? It sounds like a strange pattern, like a morse code. I don't know how to set up the LFO in order to do this "ramdon" way.
    Thanks!

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  4 роки тому

      I don't have my Deepmind set up at the moment, but if the LFO speed seems random or is changing then the LFO rate is probably being modulated by the other LFO or an envelope - check the Mod Matrix.
      I do similar things, albeit more slowly in this video:

    • @Zaubrer488

      yeah, I guessed that. especially the size is very intriguing. But I am still wondering if I may need another 6 voices... or not. I can hardly weight the pros and cons, but it looks like a great choice as mid-budget beginner synth.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому +2

      My advice is: go for the 12 if you want to/ can spend the money. The 6 is plenty until you start stacking voices - if you're a proper keyboard player you might then find you're running out of polyphony.

    • @minehead398
      @minehead398 4 роки тому +2

    • @OscillatorSink

      If you want to get really deep into sound design, the Deepmind is a good bet, it also has more voices of polyphony. That said, the Minilogue XD has those digital oscillators and is super hands on (and sounds great).
      So do you want something more immediate? Then the Minilogue, if you want something very tweakable and deep, then the Deepmind might be better.
