Neck Tension and the Rest of the Body

  • The neck responds to pressure. As a result neck tension, tightness, and pain is all too often the result of too much pressure on one side of the neck and body (the right) and not enough pressure on the other side of the neck and body (the left).
    When the body isn't pressurized correctly, as it isn't when someone is stuck in a left AIC right BC pattern, the left side of our body isn't grounded properly because we never truly position our center of mass to the left.
    Without proper grounding, the neck (and the rest of the body for that matter) can not compress and decompress. Without that alternation of compression and decompression between the left and right sides of the body, muscle function can work properly. Pain is the result.

    My body feels much stronger once I started to shift to my left side. It's like my left side was being arrested and not participating

    By the way. I am glad you mentioned the importance of Atlas positioning. A friend of mine had her Atlas worked on 4 times and it improved her biomechanics a lot. I know it might sound funny but apparently you can do it by tuning into certain vibrations. THANK YOU FOR THIS EXPLANATION ABOUT THE BODY WORKING AS A WHOLE UNIT. My wife has told me many times that l walk like a robot😃. That makes so much sense.

      Everything is vibration. Your brain needs to sense vibration, wobble, alternation of bodyweight from side to side etc... What is sound but air molecules vibrating at a certain frequency? What is voice but air molecules being vibrated as they move through the vocal chords?
      I agree that it sounds funny at first, but then when you investigate it more, it makes complete sense. PRI tries to get you to vibrate from side to side.

    Hello Neaal, I am suffering since 8months from many symptoms on my right side (dizziness, tinnitus, neck strain, blurry eye, unsteady on my right feet, weird sensation on my glute, nausea, fatigue and shortness of breatg). I saw multiple doctors with diverse specialities. Most of them said I have stress and anxiety. But I am sure that stress is only the consequence of postural issues. YOU are the only one who explained and described clearly what I am dealing with ! Please I really need your help and would like to get back control over my life 😢. Especially this sensation of unsteadiness and feeling laziness on my right side.

    i really liked this video. I have pain at the base of my right skull which gives me a lot of symptoms into my eye, head, ear and face, I will try to do more walking to see if I can reset my AO joints. I also had an right achilles surgery about 7 years ago, maybe that's making things harder at my AO joints to the right side.. I will give deep thoughts about this.

    Your video was enlightening and helpful thank you. I’m 50, I had 2 slipped disks L4 L5 - 25 years ago. Left leg sciatica & left foot drop. I’ve worked on strengthening my back but my left side always tightens up on the left side from my neck to my foot. The whole side! I stretch & stretch, it never gets any better. I feel it’s the natural way my body holds stress. It’s getting worse. Watching your video helps me understand a bit more.

    Neal,
    This is exactly what l am experiencing. My whole right side is completely shut. I never paid attention to the tightness of my neck on the right hand side. But now my shoulder feels 'trapped' as well. Trying to mobilize the ribcage but it is always back to square one. I have noticed that in one of the comments (Big Bones) you advised stretching pecs, subclavoius and anterior neck. I am not seeing Martin Higgins until mid August. Would appreciate if you could shed some light how to tackle it. I have been using a paper towel under my right arch. It has been helping a bit. It is just hard to get out of this pattern, as you said in many videos. It is just so wierd how your pains travel around your body. Thank you.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +2

      Some people do benefit from stretching or massaging those areas. You could search for videos on pec and pec minor stretches, or get a massage on those areas. Nothing special about it, really. However, people with strong sensory components (feet, teeth, vision) won't benefit much from it beyond temporarily.

    Do you think fascia, especially myofascia also plays a huge role in dysfunction in the body due to the restrictions most people have with their myofascia.
    Especially since myofascia is a chain. It's just a bunch of fascia that connects everything in the body together to form movements. So when one area of fascia is restricted let's say around your right lat is restricted due to tightness and other factors, it consequently results in some sort of restriction in all parts of the body with myofascia like the oppoiste glute for example.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +4

      Honestly, I don't get overly concerned with fascia with what I do. In my PRI work, ranges of motion increase very rapidly once proper breathing mechanics are restored.
      I'm not against fascial work at all. In fact, one area I think most people should consider fascial work (or general massage) is the upper chest area: pec minor, pec major, subclavius, anterior neck because this area does often get restricted and will prevent ribcage expansion during inhalation.
      But overall, I don't think fascial restriction gets in the way of what I'm trying to do through PRI exercises too often.

  • @Daniel-dl6cu
    @Daniel-dl6cu 5 років тому +2

    I notice than when I inhale fully focusing on fully expanding the rib cage like you said in your other video and internally rotating my hips subtly, my left side starts to bear more weight by itself than it did before. Do you know why this is?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +5

      If you are doing what I think you are doing, this combined pelvic and rib movement should orient your spine and center of mass more to the left, or at least back to neutral, from its rightward oriented position. All PRI exercises are designed to do just that. Feeling heavier, or more grounded, on the left side is a desirable outcome.

    • @NealHallinan

      You don't consciously sense it. It should occur naturally during left stance phase of gait.

    Hm I have stiff neck on the right side (scalenes?), they won't let go when I'm lying on my left side, but I do have ringing in my left ear when lying... is that common issue for left AIC right BC pattern?

    Hi neal. I've had headaches, neck issues and so many other symptoms in the last 12months. After watching your videos I noticed I have the same shifted and slight drop shoulder. I'm still getting tight neck, traps and head tension. My osteopath said one of my neck vertabrae is slightly out of line... Might be c2? She said she could adjust my neck. Do you think it's a good idea and might help my symptoms? Thanks for your videos

    So you are saying fixing the pelvis will basically correct neck tension and pain?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +5

      I would say that restoring the entire body's ability to properly alternate function between right and left sides is what will reduce most non-injury, non-arthritic neck tension and pain. The body is all "one", so the trick is to figure out what is stopping the body from using the right and left sides equally.
      Often it's a pelvis that can't fully shift to the left, or torso that can't fully rotate to the right or a neck that can't fully rotate to the left or sidebend fully to the right. PRI seeks to "turn off" the neuro-muscular patterns that create this unbalanced movement.
      The left AIC right BC pattern is simply a reflection of a body that is using the right side more than the left, but not using either side perfectly.

    Have you heard of traveling forehead tingling due to a stiff neck?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +2

      Traveling forehead tingling? I'm not sure of what the "traveling" is referring to. However, if a neck is "stuck" it can very easily cause impingement of cranial nerves and and can also reflect positions of the cranial/facial bones that could potentially irritate any number of nerves that enervate the facial muscles. I'm definitely not remotely an expert on that though.
