Vidic turned to his teammates and shrugged his shoulders as if to say "what am I to do?!" Delap's throw-ins were truly something to fear.
I think Boaz Myhill did the same when Stoke played Hull City, forgot the exact game but it was better to concede a corner than a throw in against Stoke back then.
Won't forget when teams would rather give Stoke a corner than let Delap get his hands on the ball for a throw in. All Stoke had to do was force the ball out wide for a throw in and let Delap roll out the toolbox.

I recall one of my first men’s league matches where I decided to take a throw in and just launched the ball 40 yards or so. Took myself by surprise. I’m not a very large guy by any means and being a CM I really had never even attempted a throw in longer than just a few yards. I am constantly asked how I throw the ball so far and I really have no good answer. Looking at Delap you’d never think he’d have a weapon like that in his arsenal (lol) and I think its the same with any skill that isn’t directly connected to height, weight, strength etc... You either have it or you don’t. In around 100 matches over the past few years I’ve directly assisted 10-15 and created probably 30ish goals from long throws alone. It really is an extremely effective tool to have and your center backs will be more than grateful
In the early 90s, it was often the job of a full back to have a long throw. Thus causing additional set piece threat. Nowadays most can barely throw it into the penalty area from the edge and there appears to be no value in sending the big guys up from the back.
The secret is the imense backwards rotation he applies on the ball. Thats why you see him often using a towel to dry the ball and get a better grip, so that he can maintain longer contact when throwing in order to apply more rotation. After throwing, the rotation acts the same way as a bend, only instead of bending sideways it bends up, but gravity counters this and so the ball seems to defy physics by going too slow to have a straight line trajectory. Obviously he also applies a lot of initial speed, but the main thing is the rotation.

Delaps throws were consistently good. It was a very good weapon. Corner kicks can go out for goal kicks, throw ins, not beat the first man etc but these throws were always a good height between 6-12 yards out. I'm surprised football didn't kick on a bit more doing this

The problem of delap's throw is that the trajectory was so flat and direct to the goal Meaning defenders need to get a clean hit to get rid of it, otherwise it'll likely bundle towards the goal
