Bayern and the Bundesliga is clear above the french league. Especially back in 2010-2014 wich he was talking about. Dortmund was extremely good as well, so there was a rivalry. Dortmund kicked in out clubs like real madrid and was loved everywhere. In this time the Bundesliga was hyped and much more competitive than the league 1 today in the time of Mbappe.
Nowadays most people don't care about the french league and the bundesliga because both have one strong team.

What people really mean to say is that he isn't as easy on the eye as some of the players they like to watch. The fact that he's still playing at such a high level this late in to his career is proof enough, and for that you absolutely need to be skilled.

Müller is a Legend. His abilities are often talked down but looking at FbRef Stats and his play style it is undeniable that his only real weakness is dribbling and 1v1. Everything else he excels at or at least holds his own in the top 5 leagues. His first touch is somewhat inconsistent when he tries to keep the ball or set himself up for a shot on goal. But his direct passing linking play to his team mates is always 1 step ahead of everyone else. Müller is a dream come true for youth trainers; he always already has a plan when he gets the ball and he knows exactly how his teammates think. His crossing is also on point. Him an Lewandowski were magical to witness. If you'd set him free blindfolded with a ball he would be sure to find Lewa anywhere on the planet.
He is a very special player in his work rate, leadership skills, vision, anticipation, reading of the game, passing and crossing, interlinking game... He is a player you naturally underestimate by his physique. You can run faster than him, outdribble him, physically overpower him but you can't outsmart him in the long run. His nearly inhury free career is also helping him a lot. Marco Reus could be just as important and respected in German and club football if he wasn't made of glass. His numbers are astonishing for someone basically missing half seasons on the reg.

Tomas being unskilled is exaggerated. He is mediocre at dribbling, that's it. Passing? No he excelled under Guardiola and can send a good cross. Definitely isn't slow either lol. Him being elite with one-twos and final passes alone already disqualifies him from being unskilled tbh

He is pretty unskilled for the level he is at.
Obviously he passes the technically required skill check to play at the highest level, so obviously he is very skilled.
But you can easily put him in the conversation as one of the best players to have played over the last 20 years.
And compared to those players, he is not very skilled, he is probably the least physically skilled/elegant players in that conversation.
At the same time he is, at least in my book, at the top of that list, which is where for me the unskilled part comes from, unskilled compared to the players you have to compare him to.

That said, the whole world knows Bayern Munich and many fans of football who don't closely follow the Bundesliga are still aware of Borussia Dortmund. Everyone considers the German football team a force to reckon with and a poor showing in the World Cup by Germany is considered a surprise by anyone. Any football fan who follows the EPL will most likely be aware of the hype that 'potential' players eyed by EPL clubs receive. That hype will never be there for German players simply because the marketing of the Bundesliga in the Anglosphere is well below the EPL.
Thomas Muller is known as one of the greats by anyone who has seen the German national team or Bayern Munich play. Harry Kane's move to Bayern and Lewandowski's move out of Bayern has introduced the team name to a wider audience in recent times. This video does highlight Muller as a great player and soon more people in the Anglosphere will be talking about him. It never felt like German players were under-represented it only felt like they never got that hype. After all, hype is a function of marketing and media perception, never a matter of skill.

Intelligence is just as important of an asset for a football player as pace or skill.
I've only played at a decent amateur level, but we had one guy who became a Raumdeuter due to injury.
Before the injury the guy was an absolute beast in our league. He was one of if not the fastest and most skilled player in the entire league, but due to his injury he had to undergo several knee surgeries and missed almost 3 entire years and when he finally returned, even though doctors told him to quit soccer, he had lost pretty much all his stamina and speed, but he adapted very well to this situation.
Most of the time he was just walking around the pitch reading the game, but when he saw an opportunity, he jumped into action or ditched out amazing passes that would make some pro players jealous.
He scored less goals than he used to before the injury, but his assists skyrocketed and he made the players around him much better, because by walking around and reading the game, he often picked up on weaknesses of the opponents defense. He was almost like an additional coach

Kroos and Schweinsteiger or Lahm didnt have those flashy skills either, but they are one of the best in every team they played and all played consistend over a decade in starting elevens in the best clubs of the world. And them and Muller won the world cup and championsleagues together. They are jsut very very reliable and smart teamplayers. One of these guys in a team will make any team better. Every sucessful team needs players like this and those 4 are exeptional. Muller said in an interview that he concentrates on what will happen not with his pass but with two or three passes later and then decided where he runs. he said in the youth he was always runnign were nobody would run because he thought noone is going there so ill be there e.g. he sees people concentrating on the long post and he goes short. What makes him so freaking important is that he yells and talks to the whole team the whole time and tells them what will happen. He is organizing the full first line defense and when to run for the ball and so on. Watch any Bayern game during covid in an empty stadium and you can hear "Radio muller" almost 90 minutes even more than both coaches combined

  • @sonorex
    @sonorex Рік тому +4

I've seen Toni Kroos live on a regular basis in his 2nd Bayer 04 loan year (2009/10) and in most of the games he seemed playing on Bundesliga level without any rush. He just moved in the right places a second before the rest of the players even realised what would most probably happen next on the pitch. Kroos was 20 years old then. Müller is the same age and also has that skill. So the conditions were quite comparable. However, Müller is playing a forward role. You only get a fraction of time to make your decisions compared to the central midfield.
Thomas Müller brought in an unseen and creative understanding of what can be played in the final third of the pitch.
