Guys, reading the wide range of comments here, I'd like to clear up some things - regardless of where you stand when it comes to replacing a show's score. If you hate a show's Americanized score, please understand that replacing the score is not any composer's choice. For us, composers, at the end of the day it's a job. A job that we can get very passionate about and often don't even think of as work..! But in reality, scoring films is a competitive but rewarding profession that you have to work very hard in. Would you say "no, I don't want to work on this transplanted show because the original is good enough" and refuse the job? Of course, no. (I can only refuse projects simply based on my taste now after doing this for 20 years... usual projects. Still, I wouldn't say no if Joseph Kosinski approached me to score his new movie, whatever the topic:). Almost always, it's the producer or director who ultimately decides the amount, the feel and the TYPE of music the composer is hired to compose, based on marketing reasons or their personal beliefs. In fact, composers are often given specific notes for each scene about what to express musically. So if you hate the US soundtrack of your fav show, or the fact that the score never stops, blame the producer or director (or the general audience's expectations!), not the composer. If you love the score of a show, please find out who the actual composer is, before you praise or even support the name that's marketed to you. There is lots of ghostwriting and stealing in this business, less in some cases and an extreme amount in others... some are based on fair contracts, some are astonishingly unfair, unfortunately. Do your research, listen to the composers' other works, use your ears and it will be very easy to tell the true composers from the fakes. And, never simply fall for the credits. Lastly, if you are thanking Scott, Mike and myself for our music, well... thank you very much - and congratulations on seeing through the greed, lies, deceit, and self-marketing that has saturated many soundtracks thank to some foul corners of the entertainment business. Cheers and happy listening!
It's really too bad that "Foul Corner" doesn't sell the rights back, or you guys don't regroup together...but even then I guess they'd have to be entirely new tracks. I just love the music so much, that even watching the "CZ Edition" of BoG or even edited clips of super with your team's score was fantastic. My favorite DBZ games are Legacy of Goku II and Buu's Fury, and a very big reason for that is the score alone. Going back and watching versions of DBZ without the score isn't even close to the same. Actually, I try to imagine the score, even though it's not there or simply play it in the background. It's also one of the reasons it's hard for me to enjoy Dragonball Super; very few scores are even memorable, which is a shame. I feel like many of the fans of the original Japanese score don't even prefer the English dubbing of Z, so really, if only substituting music was not a thing of the past, and no lawsuit ever took place, fans of the English dub might be treated to something special once again. Thank you.
julius dobos | forgotten future heyyy. I never knew all these details until i watched this video and i am so glad that i did. I have been enjoying your music for yearsss now. I can't have enough of it. I even send the tracks to some of my friends who love it too. Thanks for all the amazing tracks that just give me that feel good vibe all round no matter what mood I'm in! Thanks to all of you...
Doesn't matter whether you grew up with bruce's music or not. Those themes were the hype. They contributed to the intensity of the show deeply and it really helped raising the emotion of the scenes. I want it back.
Yeah, I got the shitty Canadian version. I didn’t even know Bruce existed until I was searching the web to find Buu Saga clips to rinse. Took a while to find, back then, but I eventually did and they were, of course, Funimation clips. The first was Goku finally killing Buu, and I was like, “who’s this voicing him? AND WHAT’S THIS MUSIC?!”… so yeah, first Bruce Faulconer OST I ever heard is what’s known as the SSJ3 theme.
I'm really glad to see that Scott and the others are finally getting some recognition here. Scott told me the story about all this bullshit a few years ago and I was completely livid about it. Just imagine if you were in their shoes, composed all this epic music for one of the most successful animes in history, but nobody will ever know you did it because of Bruce taking all the credit and glory. To hell with that.
Really good video man, seriously enjoyed it. You really knocked this one out the park, I learned a lot I didn't know from this. And, I'm glad I'm much more informed now! Thanks Geekdom! You rock!
His music took this anime to a completely other level. It added heart, drama, fear, pain, sadness, sorrow. To me it’s what made dragon ball Z the absolute perfect anime.
In my opinion japanese score is darker and has more feeling. Sometimes the music is kind of melancholic, which is perfect and adds a complexity layer of emotional power to a lot of scenes on DBZ.
Falconer Productions & there music will always be my version of DBZ. It's so iconic and elevated the series in my opinion along with great animation & sound design the series hasn't been surpassed even by its own kin or competitors.
It amazes me how so many people are only talking about witch dragon ball music is the best even though Geekdom even said in the beginning how this video isn´t about that at all.
I mean, it's all well and good for people to discuss what they prefer but a lot of these comments are just "I like this one better" and those sorts of comments don't really add to the discussion at all.
The Faulkoner score is amazing. Yes much of it is considered fluff. Duh, it never stopped. But think about Vegeta, SS3, Teen Gohan, Perfect Cell or Super Buu's theme & it's this score that they remember. & thanks to UA-cam, that will never be forgotten.
“Gohan Fights Frieza” is the best Faulconer score hands down. SS3 Theme is a very close second. Vegeta’s theme is just iconic as well. So many good Faulconer tracks.
@@UltraMarioBros4 Gohan Fights Frieza? Well, the sound quality (of the MIDI guitar in particular) is even more compressed than something like DOOM would be for the most part. And generally it’s like that kind of track you’d play when a shooter gets really intense.
Yes, dude. The Faulconer score is INCREDIBLY nostalgic for me, but I also really like the music on top of that. Maybe I'll watch the entire series with the Japanese OST and see how it feels.
Not just that his music is great his music always fit PERFECTLY with the moments in Dragon Ball Z like when vegeta was first turning super saiyan against the androids and the camera cut to Vegetas hair turn yellow AT THE PERFECT MOMENT FROM THE BACKGROUND MUSIC or when goku first turned super saiyan and the camera cut to his hair turning yellow at THE PERFECT moment of the music Bruce Falconer is just amazing
Imaginary Player Bruce Faulconer music makes it look like a badass fighting show but as a whole the show's theme should be cheerful and joyful that was what Bruce Faulconer was missing
As both an violinist and a Dragon Ball fan I must thank you for this video man. I never knew the English music for DBZ had such a crazy history back in the day. I really hope you do more in-depth videos dealing with the music of Dragon Ball, this was a very good and enjoyable one! :)
as a composer and musician who grew up loving both the og soundtrack and faulconer's very equally, it's awesome to see a retrospective of someone who's been soooo influential to my entire life! thank you so much for this!
MozillaVulpix he shouldve never been there at all. yeah i love you and i know you get excited when you hear his music but the original sounds better in every way.
This was actually a very interesting video, especially when it got to the legal stuff. Just wanna say, you got any plans for a video on the kenji yamamoto score/plagiarism?
because this is not the 90s anymore. nowadays the studios tries to keep the anime as much as accurate as possible to the original Japanese version.. unless they want to face backlash from the other half of the community, I don't think they will ever gonna try to replace the scores
I know this is an old interview but something very important for people to know is that Mike Smith is actually responsible for 90% of the faulconer score, from the Ginyu saga to the buu saga. He was the first composer to be brought on and has stated in numerous interviews that he was the one who started that “DBZ” sound in the score. Scott Morgan also released a music sheet created by himself that gives credit to which of the 4 composers created what track throughout all 9 albums, and on that music sheet you will find that 90% of the songs across all 9 albums were composed by Mike Smith! Just to name a few that Mike Smith did, “SSJ Transformation” (Goku’s SSJ Theme), every single vegeta track ever produced including his “hells bells” theme and his Ssj theme, “The Dragon Theme” and many many more. So to put it to you like this, Mike Smith did 90% of the faulconer score, Scott Morgan did 5%, Julius Dobos did 4% and Bruce Faulconer did less that 1%.
Cool ,man thanks to these guys, without them i can't even withstand Japanese goofy aah soundtrack for dragon ball z which has no sense of power to it and sounds like any 90s anime
Grew up with Faulconer's music, collected the entire soundtrack because it's badass, but I still watch DBZ with the Kikuchi's OST. It's just more dramatic and serious. That said, Scott Morgan is a great guy and guitarist and I love his music and the rest of Faulconer's. It's great for gaming, and stuff.
@Majin Vegeta Just give me my old kid goku and gohan. Stephanie is irreplaceable in my opinion. It's literally ruined the rest of the franchise for me. I can't stand hearing the current gohan in Kai and the games. He is my favorite character too. It hurts deep man.
@Majin Vegeta And I hate Super. I didn't finish watching it until 2 months ago? Why are bringing it up when I didn't? And DBZ is a story ABOUT fights dude. Go read the manga again.
@@abramwalker882 Nadolny was easily one of the most skilled VA's in funimation's cast. It's not even close. Her, Justin Cook, Kyle Hebert, and Sonny Strait were so much better than everyone else.
I've been watching this show for the majority of my life and had no idea about any of this. Thank you so much for the video; the music has always been one of my favorite aspects of the show. Glad I now know where the credit should go
I never realized that DBZ had music all the time playing on the background yet it's such a big part of the nostalgia I prefer the blu ray release over the Dragon Boxes just for it.
Loved the video! Greatly structured and presented! My respect for your channel has risen at even greater heights. Also I actually grew up hearing the Japanese soundtrack cause DBZ rarely appeared on the television at where I lived. I watched it on internet and heard the Japanese soundtrack for the series.
Not so lucky though! At that time I had really shitty internet which made it hard for me to even watch it there. I had to wait for a whole fucking hour for the video to load up. Those were hard days for me as a DB fan.
Back in 2003 I emailed him to see if he'd be doing GT, and he emailed me back with those email addresses of the high level employees. It was almost an immediate response. It was as if he had a form letter ready to go!
@@lll_Number_One Basically, it was a form response that said “Name, could you do me a favor? Would you email them at (address) and let them know how much you like my music?”
Good to know. I've always known that there was beef between Faulconer and Funimation, but I didn't know that there were internal problems for Faulconer Productions as well. A lot of unbiased clarification here, well done.
Hey Geekdom101, I just watched this and it was pretty good! One note--the story about the emails from Faulconer giving out Funimation executives' private email addresses is 100% true. I should know--I received one and acted on it. I was in high school in the early 2000s. I saw an email address on Faulconer's website and sent him an email requesting tracks for future CD releases. I know for sure he read it because he responded in a way that was clearly not computer-generated, and since I was pretty specific in my requests, I actually got a lot of what I asked for (2 tracks on Best of DBZ Vol. 3; 6 tracks on Best of DBZ Vol. 4; and 3 on Best of DBZ Vol. 5, and 1 on Best of DBZ Vol. 6). In roughly 2002, Bruce sent out an email to, as far as I can recall, anyone who ever emailed him, whether it was positive or negative feedback or song requests for the CDs. I no longer have that email address, but the gist was what you explained: he wanted to do GT, which at that point did not have a composer attached, and he wanted a showing of support for the Funimation executives. I was one of the ones (you know--being 16 and all) who actually followed through and emailed Gen Fukanaga. Needless to say, Gen never wrote me back and Bruce stopped responding to emails shortly after Best of DBZ Vol. 6 came out. But I just wanted to tell you that this story isn't just a story; it's true.
Some of us know how much work you put into this video... along with the rest of your content. Thank you Big D for all your dedication. Us fans are a lot more informed and enthusiastic because of you bro. It's been fun to watch your channel grow in the last year and a half. Keep it up bro, you were made for this, for us.
Great video! Thanks for doing the research. Always been a big fan of the Faulconer score while also loving the original Japanese music. They're both worth listening to in order to get a fuller experience of the series.
I grew up with dbz on toonami... And I loved the music when nothing was going on...and I also enjoyed the Japanese version as well...there both good...plus let's be real..Vegeta's bells and cells theme hits hard...
It's nice to hear different interpretations. I like Faulconer's music, but to those who only grew up w/ the American version, there are uploads of "Dragon Ball Symphonic Adventure". It's a powerful experience to recap the original show in concert. Especially Gohan's SSJ2 transformation.
Did you even watch the video? Independent of how you feel about how the Falcouner Productions score the dude was a piece of shit who contributing little to nothing to a good number of the soundtrack. If you check out the UA-cam channels in the description it literally takes like 10 seconds of listening to any of their stuff to realize where the bulk of the work came from.
Bruce Faulconer was like the Dragon Ball Version of Ubisofts Patrice Desillets The impact that they left on their respective series will live on in our hearts forever
Bro, I remember the first time DBZ replaced Dragon Ball in the same time slot. When I heard, "Dragon! Dragon! Rock the Dragon!" I stopped everything I was doing and proceeded to have my mind blown by the greatest intro of cartoon history, and one of the best animes of all time.
I can understand why many prefer Faulconer's music, but DBS's score is actually pretty good, especially for the Trunks arc. He simply *cannot* take the music from Super's score.
I gotta hard disagree fam, I can't stand the Super score, but I also can't stand the writing either. A Falconour type score wouldn't work in Super because the tone is so different overall and imo, nowhere near as tense even though the scales are much higher. Ultra Instinct is my most hated transformation theme.
It resonates more with people who like synth-rock, it's also so ethereal sounding. I listen to it often just because of how good it is on its own. So much complexity and heavy vibes. Shenrons theme is my favorite
I love both the Faulconer & Kikuchi scores, both have their respective strengths & weaknesses. I may slightly prefer Faulconer for Z, but overall I prefer the entire body of Kikuchi's work across both DB & Z. All-around great music I always listen to, though.
The first SSJ Transformation scene is unfitting. The entire scene is supposed to play as a dramatic and downright horrifying scene, not something kewl or badass, the same can be aplied to the super saiyan 3 scene.
Tremendous piece. I've heard of the rumors behind why Bruce Faulconer never came back but this piece puts everything in perspective. I've watch DBZ in Spanish, English & Japanese (English been my favorite & Japanese been my least favorite) and I can tell you that whenever I think of something epic in DBZ it has the Faulconer team music. It just brought so much to the anime. Spanish dubs tend to dub/recreate the OPs/EDs but nothing like what Funimation did with Bruce. Tbh, I wish there Faulconer like projects in anime. If you don't like it, you could always default to the original but as Bruce proved... Many still rank his music version of DBZ above the original (myself included).
I have no idea why I've never seen this channel. I love DBZ and Gundam...and this video hits the nostalgia factor 10 fold! 100% subbed! Great work! Dude you could do a mean Trunks voice!
@Raheb Imagine telling someone they aren't a real fan of something because they don't value the parts of it you do as much as you think they should. Gtfo with that crap.
2 years, too late, IK but... Honestly, I think just DBZ is fine, if he did do DBS, it could fit, but I would prefer Sumitomo’s work more than the Faulconer score for Super, and I would definitely be the opposite for the OG DB where I say the Kikuchi score would be better there, I think DBZ is the perfect place faulconer should be
Bruce was a legend as my high school went by thanks to dragonball z & the music from all the episodes. Times may change but it was a blast while it lasted
I've always wanted a comprehensive and unbiased video about Bruce Falconer and this is exactly it! Thank you so much. I got lost in all the Kanzenshuu posts about this topic, but from what I have previously read I can tell you are being VERY unbiased and fair to all parties involved
When I was a kid, I watched DBZ every single day after school, had toys, books, t-shirts, and so forth, and I was very accustom to the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack, it's been permanently ingrained into my head. Granted, over the years though, I've grown to appreciate the original Japanese scores by Shunsuke Kikuchi. I have no preference for the Faulconer scores or the original Kikuchi scores, I can go either way, though if I had to choose, I'd go with Faulconer for nostalgic reasons. Should Team Faulconer return for the English dub of Super? I'm indifferent to that debate, granted it's unlikely, but I'll be fine with he original scores being used for the dub.
Score replacements in anime localization is already considered an outdated practice (only Pokémon still has this practice nowadays). But I can't deny Faulconer gave DBZ a completely different atmosphere, in a good sense that doesn't simply sound like cheap midi music.
Anyone who loves the Faulconer style need to sub Scott Morgan and Saiyan Enigma's UA-cam pages. Their newer tracks are freaking amazing. Well done video.
It was already popular before Funimation got to replace the dub that was already there. So, it didn't really help with the popularity. In fact, in South America, where they have the original music, DB/DBZ is more popular than it ins the US!
True meanwhile jaoanese themes had no importance to anything re using same 2-3 goofy aah sound tracks everywhere meanwhile bruce gave gohan ssj2 , goku ssj3 ,famous perfect cell ,crazy buu and our fav vegeta theme
@Alonzo Reyes nah they goofy it used to air with Japanese theme and with a regional language dub in my area man those themes with wierd mello drama goofy sounds, and ssj2 theme ain't even ssj2 theme it is already reused in different points in the jap osts , i only fell in live when i rewatched dbz from some online web with falcouner score which radiated pure badassery and seriousness

Thank you julius dobos | forgotten future. Great points and eye-opening advice. I'm happy to belong to the last group!
I guess you meant the music composed by Julius, Scott & Mike. Agreed.
Ripper 30 agreed man faulconer doesn't fit DB
100th like. Miss you Enigma ❤
Bruce composed, like what, 7 or 8 tracks? and Scott, along with some other dude helmed the rest?
To be fair, it would be difficult to capitalized on that version of Dragon Ball Z if you had to name every composer who were involved.
His music fits so many moments.

Vengefulwilberg okay bro
I can respect your opinion doe. We all have our own tastes. There is always room for improvement. Super's ost is enjoyable and fits the mood well.
I agree, I felt that the music elevated certain moments like transformations, speeches, and epic fights.

That´s the dragon ball community for ya.

Tori-bot Sensei Didn't see anything cheerful in massive amounts of genocide. Torture, forms of dismemberment
both soundtracks sound great to me. they both have their charm. bruce definitely gives dbz more of a scifi vibe while the original feels martial artsy
I find Kikuchi to be more epic, grand and heroic too. More intense and unnerving, emotional and more serious too.
As both an violinist and a Dragon Ball fan I must thank you for this video man. I never knew the English music for DBZ had such a crazy history back in the day. I really hope you do more in-depth videos dealing with the music of Dragon Ball, this was a very good and enjoyable one! :)

I'll watch it. That's another thing that I'm completely lost on and suck at researching for myself.
So then why doesn't funimation hire Scott Morgan and Julius dobos to create a few tracks for super, since their beef is with Bruce?
Or Mike Smith! He wrote more than any of us!
Did some of the gear you guys used consist of the Yamaha DX7 Synth?
Aren't they using the original soundtrack? I don't think they do that any more.
because this is not the 90s anymore. nowadays the studios tries to keep the anime as much as accurate as possible to the original Japanese version.. unless they want to face backlash from the other half of the community, I don't think they will ever gonna try to replace the scores
Yep, almost everything was all ghost writers.
This is amazing, thank you for all the info!!

This music literally has a chemical, physiological, mental affect on me and makes me physically stronger at the gym. It’s crazy!!

Bruce Faulconer was like the Dragon Ball Version of Ubisofts Patrice Desillets
The impact that they left on their respective series will live on in our hearts forever
