I'll leave it up to your imagination why the original version was taken down over a year after its original upload ^_^
June 2020 Update on the DBZ Home Release Situation:
- The 30th Anniversary set came and went, and was, indeed, hot garbage.
- Sadly, the entirety of the video remains up to date and completely relevant. The fanbase continues to wait for the perfect, DBZ home release. There is no end to that wait in sight.
--Original Description--
Dropping The Ball: Dragon Ball Z’s DEPRESSING 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition Blu Ray Box Set + DBZ's FULL History on Home Video in North America!
Today we take a look at the all new upcoming 30th anniversary Blu Ray set of Dragon Ball Z, and why it looks to be quite possibly the worst release of Dragon Ball Z yet. We also take a journey through 20 years to take a look at the complete history of Dragon Ball Z home releases in North America. By taking a closer look at all of DBZ’s highs and lows over the years, only then can we gain the perspective needed to understand why this new 30th anniversary set is so disappointing to so many longtime fans. Enjoy the (often painful) trip down memory lane everyone!

i dont get it
@@RayenZYT, the joke they're making is how Team Four Star (TFS) suggests we support the official release, yet this is how Toei and Funimation treats the "official release."
It's better off to support Dragon Ball Z Abridged (DBZA) than the original show. 😆
@@SilveeYT i’d rather support the Singaporean dub over TFS
I like to think Ghost Nappa was actually the one responsible for all these terrible re-releases. Like, he just kept bugging someone at Funimation while saying it would make them all rich.
@@ShiningTaiga, I feel that, absolutely. There are many things wrong with the DBZA dub I don't think the fandom is willing to admit it, mostly because of the nostalgia they feel about it, which is understandable for them.
I think the reason why most dbz clips online are from the Orange Bricks is probably because the colors are SO over saturated, the copyright ID possiblity has trouble recognizing the footage (and I know this myself) I've uploaded clips from orange bricks one or two times, and they got copyrighted for the Faulcorner music, not the footage. So I tried to upload a Dragon Box clip, and Boom.. insta copyright block.
Lmao imagine fucking up the image quality so bad the copyright system doesn't even recognize it XD
Thats one to thank the Orange Bricks for I guess
That's simply not correct but a good observation.
That's pretty funny, it's probably not why most clips are from the bricks though
Copyright protection online was a totally different game 10-15 years ago, older uploads probably wouldn't have even been targeted by copyright claims because companies just didn't have ways of doing things about it just yet. You used to be able to find full episode uploads on UA-cam, lol

In conclusion, back in the day Funimation REALLY should have just finished the Uncut sets first to see how well they would be received. After that, negotiate with Toei to bring over the Dragon Sets instead of creating the Orange Bricks. It would have made them much more money and please fans everywhere. Take a break while Kai was running THEN bring out the Level Sets to give DBZ the respect it deserves. Too bad that isn't the world we live in.
Yeah I agree with this to be honest. Dragon Ball fans are just done dirty these days.
Sounds like Funimation wanted to make as much money as possible as fast as possible.
And that’s why they’re finally dead…
With the entire original broadcast audio for all 508 episodes of the complete Dragon Ball saga finally being leaked online by dedicated fans, it's very possible that maybe there won't be any need for us to wait for Funimation to release their ultimate sets. You know how Star Wars fans often sell and buy physical Blu-Ray copies of Harmy's Despecialized Editions on places like Ebay and Etsy? I think that approach can work well for the Dragon Ball community. I understand that piracy and bootleg media can be a touchy subject to some, but sometimes you just get sick of waiting for these companies to get their shit together. I'm even more excited about the prospect of fan-made Blu-Ray Dragon Boxes for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT (DB and GT especially, since those two have never been released on Blu-Ray). When that happens, I don't think I will ever buy another Dragon Ball release from Funimation again for as long as I live.
Shit when that happens hmu and mail it to me. But for now torrents with broadcast audio will have to do
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable." ~ Gabe Newell, CEO and founder of Valve talking about Steam to Escapist Magazine.
Edit: It's from "The Cambridge Student", but Escapist Magazine reported on it.
nyaa dot si, baby!
It's a no Brainer that funimation should have done a dragon box blu ray but here we are. Would love to see any fan edits or masters of dbz!
nah Dragon Ball is one of the few series where almost everyone involved with its creation (besides Toriyama) suck. Toei has been false flagging videos on youtube in underhanded ways that even got youtube mad. funimation just sucks in general. crunchyroll is crunchyroll. piracy is 100% morally correct here even if there was an amazing home release.
it makes me incredibly sad that this video is researched incredibly well and in high quality yet it can't even hit 100k views
I'm actually fairly sure that it got alot of views.
That is, before Toei copystriked it to oblivion and stopped it from being viewed in America.

Don't be sad. As much as Tony StrongStyle and others wish they could be part of the original fan base and even pretend to be never will...Him jumping on the bandwagon crying about these sets is such overkill and has been going on for 15+ years now. Then again it's just for views/monetization/drama/unoriginal content. If you were around in the time when internet wasn't really a thing and physical media was the only way to watch something on your own time without catching it on tv you wouldn't really care. Obviously anyone who is watching the show would like the best possible quality possible and I understand the significance of preserving the show as it was originally shown. However, having access to Vegeta and Freeza saga uncut with accurate subtitles was an absolute orgasm for fans such as myself. It was like stepping into the forbidden. Yes, as soon as I popped the DVD in I was like "Huh, this doesn't look that great" but then again terms like "remastered" and "HD" meant nothing to me at the time. There are people out there who truly can articulate why this stuff is so terrible on a technical level like Ajay and if I had his level of knowledge maybe I'd be more bitter. Tony is just jumping on that wagon saying a whole lot but not really saying anything at the same time. There's no right way to watch the show as long as you are enjoying it and maybe if Tony spent 1 hour downloading a pixelated 30 second clip on 56 kbps internet back in the day he'd be throwing less of a tantrum.

*IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE* is almost a sick joke. This was a comment on the original video.
What was
Companies like Funimation need to look at the bigger picture and realize doing multiple "Remasterings" is costing money. Just do it right once and re-package the same material every few years. But I guess they have to actually care as well.
The company that releases the Pokemon series here in Australia does just this, maybe once a year or so they refresh the packaging, or put out a deluxe set with the same disks. They continue to sell.
Would you be talking about Beyond who distributes Pokemon in Australia? They also did this with their Nickelodeon releases.
@@blizzy2604 Yeah Beyond. Every year or so they redo the marketing and art or change the cases on the Pokemon DVDs.
Sometimes doing a special edition collection as well, plus they used to have some sampler type sets with some collected episodes.
The reason why they keep releasing the series every couple of years is because they know people will buy them regardless. The orange bricks ever after all these years still sell in spite of their quality simply because it is most easily accessible version the series.
Also I don’t buy DVD’s anymore. Streaming and downloads from iTunes

it’s so sad that the level sets got cancelled. that by far would’ve been the best way to watch DBZ in NA
right... i don't why they didn't just wait and continue with the level sets instead of the 30th anniversary edition
NA? more like the world! Kai Blu Ray colours are very weird and it just gets rid of most of the grain.
they oversaturated the market they realised look we have all these products we should release them in one go instead of waiting year by year which destroyed the project entirely such a shame they don't know how to handle DVD sets at all
The problem was that it released at the wrong time, it could’ve been the best way to watch it. I hope one day they get around to it again.

The series premiere of DBZ Kai was the first anime I ever watched. I genuinely shat my pants in excitement when raditz grab the farmer's bullet. I know for a fact that a feeling like that will never ever occur in my life ever again.
which premiere vortex?
Damn! You made me feel old. The first scene I remember from DBZ was when Yamcha was killed by the Sibermen in the 90s. This was the Ocean Dub where they didn't show dead bodies so his body was edited out, but showed how heavy the tension was on the show.
it was the dbz Kai release that got me invested in anime back in middle school, it caused me to actually look up the whole series and fallow the story, I've been hooked on anime ever since, super is absolute trash

It has been bugging me because I couldn’t figure out why Sean Schemmel sounded so much better in the Saiyan Arc and then at some point after arriving in Namek, he sounded new to the roll. Now I know why haha.
😂
They wanted Sean to redub his characters as well (at least in the Ginyu Saga) but he wasn’t available being too busy in New York at the time. Probably played a part in why redubbing became less and less common as the sets went on until it just stopped altogether by the final ones except for Ox King and the Narrator (and he was stopped after "Season 6" himself).
Yeah that transition is terrible

It's happening again, 2011 all over again..
Kai is the definitive way for me. It's fast paced, it's faithful as much as possible to the original manga by Toriyama and it has a better English Dub and a HQ Japanese Dub. It's not a flawless release but it's not a bad one either.
Totally agree. While I do miss some of the filler episodes that were cut, (like some of the Gohan training episodes in the Saiyan Saga) most of them I can happily do without. Also, as somone who prefers watching anime with an English dub...I just find the original Funimation DBZ dub to be really hard to go back to, especially in those early seasons. I say this as someone who grew up with that original English dub on Toonami. It was a part of my childhood, and I'll always have some fondness for it, but it's not something I can revisit now. Kai's more faithful, and manga accurate english translation of the script was exactly what I needed, and the performances from the returning English cast were great. I even enjoyed, and in some cases outright loved, the new additions to the cast. People may have mixed opinions on Bluma, or young Gohan, and that's fair enough, even though I disagree. Chris Ayres though (may he rest in peace) as Frieza was absolutely flawless, and I will hear no arguments to the contrary...I'm half kidding with that last statement of course, but in all seriousness, Chris' Frieza was so damn good.
It's also in true HD.
The one thing I don’t understand is, Funimation should still have the 4:3 masters from the original 3 episodes per dvd release, so why don’t they just put those in a box set to make 4:3 fans happy until a 1080p-4K remasters is cheap enough to do. It’s literally the least Funimation could do to somewhat satisfy American dbz fans.
If they do that, then they won’t be able to continually squeeze every penny they can out of you whenever they decide to release a new shitty version of a tv show held near & dear to the hearts of a bunch of dumb, gullible dorks with plenty of disposable income.
They could also try to get the HD masters Toei has. I've heard the Japanese Blu-Rays look pretty good, and at one point DBZ was on Netflix in Japan, so I used a VPN to watch it and it looked great! I don't get why Funimation doesn't try to get these prints from Toei, and if they already tried idk why Toei didn't just give it to them.
@@John_Smith77 exactly.
Hopefully in the future we can get a perfect release.
Frame-by-frame remaster and color corrected
Japanese broadcast audio
Dragon Box Style Packaging and Extras
Hot-swappable between languages and manga-accurate subtitles
Optional scores for different fans (Falconer-Kikuchi etc)
I don't know about that. With the entire broadcast audio being leaked online recently, perhaps there might not be any need for us to wait for Funimation and/or Toei to make the perfect set. If the Star Wars fandom is able to restore the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy and give us the option to either download them digitally or buy physical Blu-Ray copies of them, what exactly is stopping the Dragon Ball community from doing the exact same thing with the entire 508 episode original run of Dragon Ball?
Harvey Plissken I guess your right
Good luck that aint happening!!!
And most importantly, the edited Ocean/Saban dubs and the alternate Westwood dubs!
@@pjjulian5243 LMAO
TFW pirating a rip of the JP release from the mid 2000s and pairing it with a set of fan made subtitle files is currently a better option than any of the legal ways of getting the show in NA.
the best way to prevent piracy is to make sure the product you're selling is actually good. funimation (and many other companies for that matter) don't seem to understand that.
and some of the companies that do sell good products only have like $300 collectors edition blu-rays instead of also selling normal ones (see devilman crybaby and eizouken blu-rays)
Can confirm that the orange bricks are STILL on shelves at Walmart. Seasons 1-4 are available in bundlesand that's it.
I saw them in 2021
I’ve seen them there almost everytime I go to that section of Walmart.
Not only that. They decided it was a good idea to repackage the widescreen blu rays into bundle sets despite the more recent 30th anniversary/steelbook releases being a thing and just using those.
@@jakighcolburnchannel3584 the widescreens aren’t terrible but they could be better.
@@jakighcolburnchannel3584 HOWEVER. I still think the best way to get the series now is uncut Kai.
That redubbed of the Ocean episodes explains why the voice actors of Funimation sound far better then when we first heard them in the Ginyu saga going forward. Christopher Sabot as Vegeta has the most noticable difference. As he matured with the character his voice got deeper and smoother compared to when he first voiced Vegeta.
Toei continually using funimation is like disney choosing EA to make Star Wars games. They know how awful their track record is and how unsatisfied the consumers are, but they dont care, since they are still generating more money than they deserve.
The proof that Toei knows: they kicked Funi to the curb for the expensive, high-end ViZ for the current English do-over and distribution of their other immortal cash cow and revolutionary definitive anime adaptation of a revolution definitive manga, Sailor Moon.
I like DBZ Kai. I don't like a lot of the filler and consider that they were able to re-do the English dub when the original had a bad tendency to go off-script, resulting in mocking memes. It's censored a little bit, but barely. It still has decapitations, bisections and Trunks cutting Frieza into sushi.
And bad language. We still get “hell”, “damn”, and “bastard”!
Its because most people still believe that Kai is completely censored all because of nicktoons
The Level Set shit was just so damn depressing, but as sad as it is it's a very good example of what can happen when a market is oversaturated.
Ahh, DMCA Abuse. Anyone remember when Toei striked themselves? It killed their own channel. Good times. Great video Tony! Glad to see it's reuploaded.
Anyway, I want to point out. This video was made April 30, 2019. The 30th Anniversary Set was released in November 2019. When it was released, AnimeAJay pointed out that they added fake grain to the pictures. They removed fake grain and then added artificial grain to the already destroyed picture. Another clear sign Funimation doesn't know why people wanted the grainy pictures and doesn't know what they're doing. AnimeAJay did a video like Tony here criticizing what was shown. Forum users believe the reason they added fake grain was because AnimeAJay talked about the grainless, damaged pictures. And the addition of fake grain is an attempt at damage control. I wouldn't be surprised if whoever oversaw this thought "Those kids sure do love their grainy Instagram filters. It's so retro."
Then there's Dragon Ball Super Broly, not touched upon here. The movie was released to US/CAN/UK Blu-Ray in April 2019 though Japan got their release a little later iirc. However, if you bought Funimation's release, there's a green tint permeates the entire film. The Japanese release doesn't have this green tint. The Manga UK release doesn't have this green tint either (Japanese & English dub). I don't know if Funimation ever fixed it either. This means you need to buy the UK release of the American dub over the the American company's own release. Ridiculous.
The green tint on DBS Broly is actually not Funimation's fault. That's just the version Toei gave Funimation to punish Japanese customers for importing (at least that's what I've heard, not too sure if that last part is true).
@@ToastyMann If so that's wild, but doubtful.
@@ToastyMann Honestly i'd believe that considering how insanely expensive a lot of home media is in Japan from what I can see
Even as a Kai apologist, the fact that the highest quality sets for Z are cut-down is very disappointing. I’d love to own all of original Z on home media. I just wish it actually had a decent release…
I love Kai and personally find its colour palette (in the original run) to be the most appealing of all the home video releases. That said, the random af redrawn scenes are disgusting and definitely drag the whole thing down.
Agreed.
Yes, the too clean digital redrawn scenes by Toei don't match the grainy original footage.
Well it still IMO the better version of DBZ as its more 90% close to the manga, less filler and faster paced, ive only managed to watch the DBZ for about 3x in my whole lifetime.
@@carloRX78K2 yeah, as someone who has seen both versions, I can never go back to original Z. The only thing is I miss the original Kakuchi score. I hear there are versions of Kai with it, but it's been hard for me to track down. Kai having no filler is what does it for me, along with the better english dub voice acting. If only there was a release of DBZ with the original cells, most of the filler cut (besides maybe some like the drivers license episode since it was referenced in Super Hero), newer voice acting/Kai's voice acting, and had the original Kikuchi score. Sadly I don't think I would see a version remotely like this unless I made it myself, which would be a colossal effort, not to mention I don't have the original cells.
@@TheLegendOfLame Kai with Kikuchi score isn't exactly good tbh, since the music placement got butchered
You know, part of me has to ask...What If the Dragon Boxes were NEVER released in the West? Would the Level Sets be alive and well to this very day?
granted the level sets we’re starting to look very good by the 2nd set i’m wondering if there gona do uhd box sets they could release the whole series in one box but there prob gona milk us
@@retrogamerfan123 Of course they will. You MIGHT expect that they will use the same orange brick master for their UHD 2160p releases. (Mark this comment for future reference!)
It’s possible. The level sets are far from a perfect release (even if completed, they’d still lack a lot of features found in the Dragon Boxes), but maybe Funi would have learned the right lessons from them. After all, they were far from bad.
Funimation are very unwilling to cater to the hardcore side of the fanbase though, so it’s unlikely they’d ever create their own Dragon Box-tier release without heavy prompting from Toei or whomever.
The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes look cool on paper, it has episodes previews, previous episodes of what happened to the story, and Japanese ost (Shunuke Kikuchi's background soundtracks; sadly there's not a single English dub background soundtracks in 7 box sets (example: Nathan Johnson's soundtracks (ep: #1-67) or Bruce Faulconer's soundtracks (#68-291)). But the thing is the price of what's it costs. The Dragon Ball Z Orange Bricks (yes it is the worst as it looks) had the price lower than the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes. While the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes cost like $1000!!!! What in the world are they're thinking, I am definitely not going to spend that kind of money just to buy one single or multiple box sets of the show that I grew up from my childhood years. It's a bad business decision from FUNimation on that part.
@@SSJ491 The Dragon Boxes aren’t a thousand dollars or more because of Funimation.
Funimation discontinued the DBoxes a long while ago (probably over a decade ago) and since then it’s been on the secondary market (usually eBay). When it WAS on the market and Funi was selling them, each box cost eighty dollars, totaling five-hundred sixty dollars for the whole set…pricier than the Orange Bricks, but considering what they were packaged with, it would’ve been worth it.
I have to say, despite how much I appreciate what Funimation has done for anime, I must recognize that they have handled things with DB incredibly poorly. I mean come on, DBZ is *the* show that made Funimation a real company! They need to treat the property with much more respect. Without DBZ, Funimation would never have happened and anime in the west might not even be a thing! There's a damn good reason that DBZ enchanted the world in the 90s and early 00s.
Anime would exist but it won't be popular as it is now today except japan, not only US, but internationally
They need new peoppe working for funimation because i honestly think funimation doesnt do this on purpose i generally believe they think they are doing the right thing ,because what they do cost money, why would u pay to destroy your film? It doesnt make sense so i think they truelly believe that it looks good so there for we need new workers so maybe in future
A necessary evil unfortunately. Or else we'd all be stuck in the dark ages paying $30+ for Angel Cop and Violence Jack tapes.
I understand the comments about kai's terrible redraws and censorship but why is the lack of filler a bad thing? Very little filler in dbz was any good anyway and they removed it in kai to make it more faithful to the manga.
Honestly despite the bad footage I like Kai more for it's better voice acting and script
The filler is annoying but the episode where Goku learns to drive is legendary
Not to mention, wasnt the censorship just the TV release? I'm pretty sure the dvd releases had uncensored versions of the footage
The filler isn't even that bad in Z, the padding is what makes it terrible. Z has so much padding its disgusting. I'd love for a fan made version of kai with the filler episodes in tact still.

at least the only thing that stays consistently good throughout the releases is Steve Simmons's subtitles.
Of course the level sets, the best quality versions besides the original cels themselves, is the one that gets canceled.
and it's all Funimation's own fault too. You had the original DVD sets, you had the Orange Bricks, you had the Dragon Boxes, then you also had DBZ Kai around at the time. FOUR SEPARATE RELEASES to watch DBZ that just incredibly overflooded the market. Then when they actually gave a freak to try people were just sick and tired of all of it. smh
People need to also remember that Toei plays a major hand in this. The remastered footage they made at Toei is probably more money to send over than for funimations to make their inhouse remastered versions. Toei does this with all their international partners, Hasbro/Saban, Shout Factory, Viz, and even Funimation.
What’s wrong with Kai?

@@duncanohoge If that's true then that sucks on Toei's part as they missed out on potentially billions of dollars in revenue. But on the other side of the coin why does Funimation do such a poor job of "remastering" even second generation copies? I still own S1 of "The Simpsons" on DVD from 2001 and that show cam out the same year as DBZ, 89 and it looks fine. Why does everyone hate DBZ Kai? Coming from someone who grew up watching reruns on cartoon network, losing interest, and then rediscovering DBZ in the from of Kai on Nicktoons, which I know is the worst possible version considering how heavily censored it was. After that, I bought the remastered DB set and DBZ sets on DVD. After the freiza arc on Namek, I got burned out. I started thinking, is watching an entire arc about Goku and Piccolo getting their driver licenses necessary? Is an entire arc about a "vampire disease" necessary? This one takes the cake for me. Is an entire arc dedicated to SPACE ORPHANS necessary? In my opinion, HELL NO! I wanted a way of viewing the show from point A to B with the nonsense side stories taken out. Low and behold, I rediscovered Kai. It was the best version of DBZ I had discovered. But seriously though, why all the hate?
I like dbz Kai but lemme bring you some points 1 Because of filler 2 because of censorship (wrong versions) 3 Because it’s not like z 4 some voice changes 5 bad version/ edit of z
The amount of research put in this video! UA-cam kept recommending it to me until I finally clicked it and I'm glad I did. If only we could get a legendary 4:3 source footage, broadcast audio release. Maybe one day, but I doubt it since Toei doesn't really seem to give a shit. Anyway thanks for the video, I actually learned a lot. Hope you keep making content this good and grow!
:O it’s MaStar Media :O
Holy shit its the guy who traces animation because he cant draw shit
At least DBZ is on BluRay not like the original Dragon Ball scries that hasn't hit any form of BluRay and the last time Original Dragon Ball hit the market it was in 2009 on DVD only
go trace loser
Shut up
I’m part of a new wave of fans: the ones that start watching DB because of the global response to Toriyama-san’s passing, which pushed me to check the series out. I’m starting with the original dragon ball. Already on episode 7 and I’m hooked! I wish I didn’t sleep on this series for so long!
(Edit): I finished the Piccolo Jr Saga and now I’m on Z!
(Edit 2): I’m on the buu saga now
I feel sorry for the person who collected all the original 3-4 episode DVDs only to see the orange bricks announced, then as he finally got the last orange brick they announced the dragon boxes and then as he finally got the Dragon boxes he saw the Kai announcement and bought the Kai DVDs and then as he bought Kai he saw the level boxes being announced..and after buying all the level boxes he could buy, he hears they're canceled but then Funimation announces a blu ray set of Kai ..
I would be LIVID
That's mommy and daddies money.
I’ve slowly come to realize the best way to watch Z is through Dokkan Supper attacks and active skills.
It's based on DB Box wich looks unnacurate
I remember going to a music store in a small shopping mall in Illinois in 99-00. The dvds had been completely cleaned out so I go to the vhs and they're almost gone I bought the episode from the android/cell saga where Goku and Picolo take driving lessons. 12/13 year old decided having that episode on vhs was better than having no Dragon Ball Z at all.
Lol I didn't even have that luxury back then. Me as a 9 year old would record blank vhs tapes from Cartoon Network lol 😆 the embarrassment.
I remember spending a long time reading an article in Shonen Jump about how they altered, zoomed and refilled for the rereleased DVDs in widescreen and trying to wrap my head around how it was a good thing
Its affordable and accessible way to Z with the merican Ost
That shot at 19:06 is too clean I wish I could buy something with the whole series like that
36:57 As someone who grew up watching Kai and got into the series that way, I understand the older generation hates the censorship, but is that really the sole reason why it’s “trash?” Kai‘s censorship was to comply with Japan’s quickly evolving laws involving violence on TV shows. Plus, the dialogue is much better and the Yamamoto score was immaculate, despite the plagiarism.
My main issue with Kai was that it was terribly produced. As jarring as the redrawn scenes were, that was nothing compared to how blatant the cut-and-paste job was. They cut episodes together, so you'd have clashing art styles. You'd see some great animation one minute and then absolute dog shite next. It was awful.
They should've gone the Sailor Moon route and just remake DBZ without the filler.
They should of waited until 2015 for the level sets
I absolutely love this video. I always end up rewatching it every couple months because its so informative on all this. I noticed even when I was a little kid that the Japanese audio sounded terrible and I didnt understand why since its the 'original'
It is the sound wave embedded on the original film
Im back again. ✌️
This is orange brick. And this is orange brick that has ascended past a orange brick, or as I like to call it a Season Set, and this (30th Anniversary Edition) is to go further beyond. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!
First of all, I love this video. THANK YOU for your efforts on this journey. ... secondly i'd like to add a nitpick of mine concerning the DBZ releases:
Super Buu's voice mimicked the original CN broadcast on the first (~1997-2003) DVD release in North America... but Funimation decided to change it.. for the infamous orange brick release! (for whatever reason, they removed the ominous lower pitch effect on his voice, in favor of a higher, more annoying voice)... and to this day for every subsequent release.. do you know which vocal track they use for the english dub?? You guessed it-- the orange brick vocals. Every single blu-ray release has this "problem". I know this sounds crazy. But I had to do a lot of digging and "research" to find out why none of the physical DBZ releases sounded like my old, treasured, VHS recordings from toonami back in the early 2000's. So... long story short, I got lucky and managed to hunt down the old 2003 DVD box sets for the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas-- which have Super Buu's voice sounding exactly like I remember, plus uncut footage in 4:3. ... just throwing that out there. Just in case anyone else needs another reason to hate the orange bricks.
Ironic how a horrible release of DBZ was an absolute hit and can still be found to this day
While the Level Sets that actually went frame by frame to give the show better quality and overall gives the viewer the best experience, got canceled after two sets due to poor sales.
This is on Funimation for not airing out the releases but this is also on us, we praised the shit releases to the point where they’re the norm and the actual best remaster Z could get will never see the light of day.
The only thing wrong with Kai is the reanimated sequences, and Gohan's new voice lol, but kai truly is the best version of Z out there. Sadly a huge portion of traditional and older fans act like it's bad just because they're mad that it straight up exposes how incredibly bad the original English dub is. If you watch it Japanese then I don't really know which version is better. Also, original Buu saga is pretty decent, and the final Chapters is inferior to kai 1.0, so I guess I wouldn't know which one to recommend when it comes to that saga.
Facts. I grew up on the old Z dub and as a 29 year old now I realize that the dub was bad. But that was because the voice actors were pretty much new in the industry and had no experience
I personally don't care for Kai, but I will admit that the voice acting and scripts were better than the original Z dub. But they couldn't have used a different voice for kid Gohan? Holy smokes, that voice hurts my ears! And I hate how I have to listen to it whenever I play a modern DBZ game like Kakarot, which is a double shame because Gohan is my favorite DBZ character.
Kinda triggered that you crapped on Kai. But this video does an excellent job on discussing on all the home releases of DBZ. There are genuinely too many home releases of DBZ.
As big fan of Dragon Ball, I gonna be brutal honest, I never supported the show by buying the official release. Why?
1. Because it was never officially released on home video where I live. Only trash quality TV broadcast, that was censored as hell, all the names and things were changed, and the quality was terrible.
2. Buying those official, terrible releases, was not a option, they were too expensive, with super expensive shipping and the quality was terrible.
Where I live only the manga was available, and that's the only piece of Dragon Ball media I was buying.
Even today, Dragon Ball Super anime and movies DVD/BR here are not officially released, they are imported from EU with no changes.
They don't have our language in any shape and form.
And to add more salt to the wound, we are one of the big community of Dragon Ball in EU.
The best video hands down that explains all the releases. I’m still holding out for the level set to be brought back. Especially with original broadcast audio & Bruce Falcouner audio. Is there any hope especially now with the steel box release?
Latin Americans DB fans be like:
Wait, you are getting home video releases?
That fictional release with the original broadcast audio and original animation cell colours and quality sounds amazing.
Those couple animation cels were gorgeous.
I want
Original 4:3
Uncut (keep blood etc.)
Option to have faulcner score or original
Swap between dub and sub
Best picture possible like on the cancelled box sets
No 16:9
Also don’t zoom in and cut edges off
Correct color
Did I mention keep it in 4:3
I grew up with the original Dragon Ball Z still part of my heart but to be honest I prefer Dragon Ball Kai especially on home media and streaming. It is much better for me to rewatch with awesome dubbed dialogue, reanimated scenes and unnecessary stupid boring long filler episodes gone. Plus the series is a little more faithful to the manga counterpart. In Kai there also a lot more swearing which I like and fit my favorite character Vegeta personality😂 lol.... The editing in some of the episodes in DBZ Kai fits perfectly. BTW KAI IS NOT TRASH!!!!
FUN FACT: Blood is still there in the uncut episodes of Kai just mild as it portrayed in the manga. The Creator Akira Toriyama stated that in the anime the bloody scenes are just for the dramatic effect but in his manga he didn't really have that much blood.
Wonderful video. It brought back some painful memories though, let me tell you. I remember being so excited when Orange Brick 'Season One' came out. This would be my FIRST experience of seeing the Saiyan Saga uncut and subtitled in Japanese. FINALLY, I was buying it and taking it home!
And FINALLY, the original score.
And FINALLY, the word "die."
And FINALLY, beer. And FINALLY, bloo-w-wait, why is half his hair cut off there?
Once I learned the truth about the cropping, I tried to deny it. I really did. Tried to convince myself that the picture wasn't THAT bad, and that FUNimation's "image comparisons" were telling the truth. I could see most of what was happening, right? ...Right? No. They screwed up. Just like every other release. What was even worse was that with the Blu-ray season sets, they were STILL doing it. They STILL thought this was a good idea!
Oh, and yes. Those Orange Bricks were EVERYWHERE. For YEARS. Whole sections at Walmart where you could find all 9 of them readily available to buy.
Its still like that today
Huh, "Kai is trash" is a weird way to say "Kai is only good way to watch DBZ in English, because the bloated badly dubbed messed of the 90's is only good if nostaligic value is th same as quality" Kai is great
Kai probably would be the best way to watch it if it wasn't for the unnecessary and outrageous censorship, also some of the filler was fun, it didn't all need to be removed
@@crashbash8549 okay but the filler didn’t need to be there to begin with, either. Also, you watched the wrong Kai
@@crashbash8549 Kai has multiple versions, tho.
@MrConnman123 get off your high horse
@@crashbash8549 you need to remember the time Kai was made in. However, kai is the true best way to enjoy the show.
36:59 "key scene" MY ASS. it was not in the original manga and is therefore considered FILLER, and definitely not a "key scene".
There are still Funimation apologists to this day that defend the cropping. Their knees probably have calluses.
Sad gullible dub fans. Funi still SUCKS!
Funimation apologists' _entire bodies_ are scarred by what Funi does to them once they get on their knees. 😬
Video was incredible. Truly documentary quality. It frankly upsets me knowing how this all turned out.
I just went with the Kai blu-rays in the end. Except for the Buu Saga somehow being fucking cropped wide-screen the rest of the show is a pretty great transfer.
Kai buu saga is ass quality wise
"THE SEASON SET IS BEING PRESENTED IN 16:9"
Half of that dudes face is covered by his shadow when he said that. That was his Zuko moment
Idk if I'm going crazy but I don't remember Kai looking THAT badly redrawn. When they were showing it on Nicktoons it looked great and didn't have as much censorship as people claim
It's just a couple scenes here and there that were redrawn (you can tell there is a massive difference in art style when they appear). Other than that, I feel like the color/lighting change for the overall original footage looks good.
FUNi: We made Orange Bricks in Widescreen! 16:9
VIZ: (Laughs As J. Jonah) No. Sailor Moon Classic is in 4:3 and Sailor Moon Movie Trilogy in 16:9 by Toei since 2009 so Hold our Silver Crystal & Drinks. 🥤.
>with dragon ball super set to return any day now
oof
I can’t get over how the Season 4 Orange Brick says ‘Containing the complete Garlic Jr, Trunks, and Android’ instead of ‘Trunks, and Android sagas’
I can't believe we're still in this predicament. Honestly, I don't understand why they don't do the sensible thing and do a real ultimate set and finally just make EVERYONE happy by including the 4:3 remastered like the level sets and include 16:9 as well. Think of how Disney+ handled The Simpsons. I honestly wouldnt care at this point if I had to pay extra because it includes both as long as I know it has 4:3 done right. If we could get the original broadcast audio as well, that's even better
That's crazy, I was thinking about this video the other day. Guess I'll jus watch it for the 10th time.
Sorry to see this video taken down, it deserved all the attention it ever got the first time around. As a kid who grew up with Kai, I empathize with you man. I hope one day we can all enjoy a quality version of OG DBZ without shelling out over $1,000.
Kid, I grew up with the early Funi dub back in 99 when I was finishing middle school. Back when they dubbed it they had to connect a toaster to a washing machine and wait 45 minutes to rewind the tape when Sabat messed up a line.
Thank you so much for uploading this again! I was really interested in this first time around!!!!
I cannot with this slander of Kai! lol, I’ll admit the redrawn instances stick out terribly and the censorship they kept is rough. That being said, the censor issue really is only bad in the sayian saga, and the redrawn moments are few, short, and far in between.
The real crime is the Buu saga release (when they did it way later) was a lazy rush job by toei. Not only did they revert to widescreen, but now there’s a green tint to everything
I’m glad to cut much of the filler, and will still be my preferred way; but damn do I wish they did it better.
Anyways, great vid! I didn’t know much of this, as I was checked out of db pretty much 05-15 lol
And censorship was only an issue for the TV version that aired on Nicktoons, the home release was almost completely uncut.
Thank you for re uploading this!
My personal favorite way to watch the show is Kai, as the newer releases of Kai are in 4:3 and have MUCH better audio and voice acting. Also cutting out all of the hours of filler from the show REALLY helps with rewatch ability. That being said, some of the redrawn shots are pretty jarring, but not all of them are bad.
I hate Kai for the simple fact they changed the dialogue and the voice acting isn’t the same. The OG voice acting like vegeta for example is irreplaceable.
@@forza8719 It's the same voice actor bud, look it up. He's just not doing a poor impersonation of ocean dub vegeta this time.
@@nickleback3695 no shit it’s the same voice actor lol Chris sabatt. I’m saying the original dialogue is just better. Nothing will ever beat it imo.
@@nickleback3695 I said acting not actors
@@forza8719 Funnily enough, you prefer the disjointed and choppy dialogue of the original that was completely different from the Japanese script. Fine if you do, but understand those who want the true context of every scene.
Dear Funimation,
Just give DBZ to Shout Factory or The Criterion Collection. (5-11-2021)

@@ToastyMann Late reply, but can you tell me what you mean by that?
@@CarloNassar I agree with it.
@@ToastyMann Very well.
Honestly I agree.
I still wonder why this vid doesn't have many views because it honestly is really informative. Again, it saved my money.
I still go back and rewatch this video.
It's oddly addicting
if you want to watch it dubbed, the re-dub of kai alone makes it better than Z imo. the voice acting in kai makes the voice acting in Z sound like a college student's school project. it's a lot easier to take seriously.
The way I watch it is Kai with a tiny bit of Z mixed in. Primarily the Saiyan saga filler. Oh and pickon in the Majin buy saga
Kakacarrotcake you am no real super sand -Virginia
@Ruthless Attitude Entertainment
Ok please tell us why DBZ is so much more superior than Kai
@Ruthless Attitude Entertainment
Wow you are literally the stereotype of a fanboy purist.
@@frisby7143 the Saiyan arc filler is really good, so I’d agree. A case where the anime took advantage of its format to properly flesh out the story and give things more time to grow.
The DBZ uncut dub for it isn’t terrible either. Now, it’s not conventionally good, but it is a step up from Funi’s awful Seasons 3 and 4 dub.
I love this video!!!! Thank you so much for making this; please continue with this awesome content, it's straight🔥🔥🔥
This is a great video! fantastic research done, and is a perfect way to explain why we need a proper remaster...
... Except for the Kai hate. I get if you want to experience the Dragonball in the old fashioned way, DBZ works, but I can't in my right mind recommend DBZ to any new fan, especially to an new adult fan. DBZ is just much too bloated. As a fan of almost 10 years, I've watched in order: DB, DBZ, DBGT, DBZA, DBZKAI. I have watched both JP and ENG version of Z, and both scores for the ENG, I've watched Kai in both JP and ENG as well. I never recommend new fans watch DBZ. it's fine to go back and watch from time to time for nostalgias sake, but I can't justify it anymore, and I used to be a kai hater as well, until I watched it. I also always recommend people not skip OG DB. It's not a prequel, IT'S THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY!
Also, the kai dub is Objectively superior to the Z dub, and that's an important factor in my recommending DB to somebody.
And I just realized you might have been joking, my point still stands though. DBZ was even censored from the manga, so it in and of itself is not the purest way to experience the story, the manga is. Also, I don't miss any of the DBZ filler other than the other world tournament and the Gohan in high school stuff.
Where can I get the full version of Kai instead of the one that only has only 98?
@@pooperwooper8167 Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters covers the Buu saga and has 69 episodes, bringing the total episode count to 167. Those original 98 only go to the end of the Cell saga. Also, the Japanese version of the Kai Buu Saga has a few less episodes because the international version has a couple filler epsiodes retained from DBZ. a little confusing.
All you need to know is that its called DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters, and it covers all of the Buu saga up to End of Z.
The original DBZ dub is FAR better than the Kai dub, it's not even arguable. Post-GT Schemmel and Sabat just phone in every single performance, not just in Dragon Ball but every anime they're hired for. Gohan's voice actress just does not fit well at all. Any other performance bumps in quality can't overlook these things, imo. Schemmel peaked in GT, change my mind.
That's your opinion. I held that same belief until I actually watched Kai in its entirety. Sean and Chris have both said on many occasions that they were far more experienced as voice actors when they did Kai. The main goal of the Kai dub was to make it the definitive Dragonball Z dub experience. I agree with the creators of the product.
I used to prefer Stephanie nadolny as Gohan, until I got used to Colleen clinkenbeard. As I said in the original comment, I watched DB first, so I associate Stephanie as young Goku, and not Gohan.
I can say that the buu saga stuff in Dbz and gt are decent dubs by early 2000s standard, but unfortunately the script is not up to par anymore. Especially the gt script, which changes many character motives, Including making Goku into a superman justice warrior type, which he is not.
There are plenty of resources to back up these facts. Geekdom101 has plenty of videos explaining Kai, and interviews with va about dragonball and the Kai dub.
@@Doomacam I've seen Kai many times, I've also played a ton of recent games where they use the modern cast. They just do not have the same charm as the original. It's more polished in a corporate sense but is absolutely lacking the mid-90's confidence that came with being under the radar. Funi is a big "respectable" company now and their dubs reflect this corporate polish framework. Sabat and Schemmel are more experienced now for sure but so is James Earl Jones who has only degraded over time. With success can come complacency, and I think that's probably true of Sabat who sounds the same no matter what role he's playing. Schemmel I just think doesn't have the same energy he did earlier on so I can sort of forgive him there. He's definitely more talented than Sabat.
I must hard disagree on Clickenbeard. There's not much to say really, I've gotten used to her, but every time I do and go back and play something with Nadolny, it sounds a lotttt better. Hard to say if it's just the difference between voice actresses' particular skills, or if one voice is more suited than the other. Even friends I've introduced to the series say they prefer Nadonly to Clickenbeard once showed the difference, but this is anecdotal.
You can't really complain about VA script quality in GT, it's new material. And Schemmel made the changes in characterization work remarkably well, I think; I still consider that to be his best performance. I also don't really personally care about accuracy since I know the original story from the manga. I like the original dub for what it is, a somewhat inaccurate but fun piece of anime history in the west.
It's infuriating! They also claim, now, that regarding dub and writing and presentation- that 'people want the original un-edited'. It's baffling!! Funimation is the devil. The 30th anniversary is an insult! They also released 4 different versions & had the nerve to be surprised that people didn't buy up the Level Sets (which were pretty good quality), & decided it was because people preferred their shoot DNR cropped garbage. So many other anime's don't get fucked with like DBZ does. It's heartbreaking
for real, the remaster on the GT Green Bricks would be better than what we've gotten recently. the green bricks look good, and they're everywhere, TODAY. they're obviously cheap to make, so why not just make that for Z?
Are they the same quality as the VHS tapes?
@@Rigicai05 they're a little better than the single DVDs. not exactly Dragon Box, but acceptable.
@@lucasholley6026 Is the soundtrack the same?
@@Rigicai05 More or less. The Bricks have Dub with Dub score (where applicable), Dub with Sub score, and Sub with Sub Score.
@Rigicai05 I should mention that except for the single DVDs/VHS Tapes, when it says "U.S. Broadcast Audio" it is not really US broadcast audio. It uses the dub tracks and the revised dub to peacemeal together an almost broadcast version.
This answered a lot of questions! Thanks for making this video!!
Kai isn't a bad version of Z. Though a bit censored due to changing broadcast standards, it got significantly less so over time & is actually very watchable. Though the redrawn frames CAN look distracting, there aren't a lot of them. Plus, I think the pacing & English dub are far superior to Z's. Although, The Final Chapters could've done without the cropping to widescreen & keeping in of more filler than it should've. Condensed more closely to 52 episodes or so, I think it would've been better off for it.
I agree with you
They should’ve at least kept the driving episode which, to my knowledge, is the most popular and well received of all of Z’s filler.
i just straight up agree with this.
@@paperluigi6132 Meh. Whether a filler was popular or not, it makes no difference. It also still exists on the home releases of Z, so you can still enjoy it all you want.
I'm shocked. I watched the entire thing on Orange Brick and had no idea of the downgrades.
It sucks that DB and GT probably have no chance of a good color corrected HD release that Z has seen at least a bit of.
AB group Blurays
Great work and great video! We see how much you care. I cannot bring myself to buy any available version ( as the level set were abandoned ).

I can't get over the editing of the guy in the chair around the 40:00 min mark saying the same damn lie over and over again. :D lol
I'm surprised you think Kai is trash. So many long time Dragon Ball fans think it's the best way to experience the series because it's paced much better, being more in line with the manga, and the dub is far better with dialogue that more faithfully matches the Japanese script.
I mean, I personally still prefer the original because I enjoy SOME of the filler and I greatly prefer the original Japanese soundtrack. But reasons for liking Kai more are perfectly valid.
I don't think we will ever get a well done Hd remaster of DBZ as long as Funi had the license. Discotek Media did some fantastic remaster for Cagliostros Castle and Hajime no Ippo. Both look stunning. Crisp graphics and looks great.
Though there was quite a few other things in my life that affected everything in my life, the orange bricks were the main reason that made me change from a huge DB fan to just watching it now and again. I mean I binge watched DB - GT in 2001 (back when the only option was the vhs rips and bad fan subs put onto VCD's) and binge watched again in 2003 and 2004. It took me until 2010 to watch about half of DB and DBZ and I never finished the rest of the series until lockdown to finish off the series.
Kai is probably the best looking way to currently watch, sure it does cut out a lot of filler, and the raditz saga is heavily censored, but it's still great.
