What's in an Intro? - Gravity Falls' Hidden Clues

- A way too deep analysis of regular, not at all Japanese cartoon openings. The opening theme song of Gravity Falls is impeccable, and thoroughly deserving of a What's in an OP? style breakdown. Hope you guys enjoy this special episode. Also, Spoilers!
In two weeks we'll be back to our regular What's in an OP? programming with a followup on Spice and Wolf.

Songs used: Gravity Falls Theme Song and You Made Me Realize by Brad Breeck.
Fan-made orchestral remix of Gravity Falls theme by Walt Ribeiro (fororchestra.ba...)
Gravity Falls created by Alex Hirsch and Disney Television Animation. Disney owns the show, obviously, as well as most of the planet.
Mabel's sweater isn't a fire hazard.... It's a fun hazard
Fire is fun though
ThatOneRandomSteve zukos scar
YEAH!
ThatOneRandomSteve is
As Mabel might say "A fire is just an opportunity for a water fight!"
Water balloons anyone? Haha
I like how you loop the footage, it's a nice little touch.
Same
Those shots of Dipper and Mabel that you commented on being well animated were animated by none other than James Baxter, so it's not a huge surprise the animation is gorgeous
Okay, yeah, that makes a lot fo sense. Only a horse on a beach ball could have put together animation that magical.
+Mother's Basement haha, basically
James Baxter the horse!
1:17 - "Mabel's backpack has purple polka dots on it"
got it
certainly not pink polka dots
A Johnson They are pink
Littleredbull 127 its sarcasm
They're clearly uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh orange polkadoots
Sport DeWoof He’s talking to the reply not to the comment
So there are ads on this video now, but just to be clear, I'm not the one who monetized it. Also, it may not be visable on mobile for some reason. There's a copyright claim on the video that I'm trying to sort out, so bear with me here guys. Sorry for any "inconveniencing"
+Mother's Basement Can you do the opening for Coppelion?
Hey i know what the numbers stand for the secret to the vending machine code
Wait why was it in quotes...
OH IT WAS A REFERENCE
+Mother's Basement the 6 fingered hand is stanford not the glasses
The lama is Mabel look at her sweater Pacifica's painting is more different to the wheel picture
6:22 Very minor detail, but I like that Alex in Gravity Fallseses' artstyle looks very similar to a younger Stan, who he also voices.
Once again a great analysis of one of my favorites. I'm gonna miss Gravity Falls after it's over and I got the Blu-Rays (please make good Blu-Rays, Disney) and I rewatched it half a dozen times.
Well I just spoiled the entire show for myself... Time to go watch it in the span of 2 days.
Well at least you didnt have to wait years between seasons.
+AC-Wesley how did you like it?
I actually enjoyed it a lot. And yes, I actually did watch it in 2 days.
+AC-Wesley i saw a clip of mabel and dipper somewhere on tumbler and immediately knew i was going to watch it. finished all the episodes in less than 5 day and now waiting for one of the pines to die ;-;
+Candy Neko I like how you're sayin' that you're wating for someone to die XD. I hope it's Stanford, I don't really like him :/.
Dipper briefly looking at Wendy was mind-blowing, it's so hidden and so appropriate... I love this show so much
WHERE THE FINALE REVIEW, MAN?
WHERE?
Love your work by the way
So in conclusion: It's so dense; every frame has so many things going on.
Wow we learned at the last episode that Pacifica was the llama and people assumed this way before. Wow still amazes me
i love how the summerween monster is like a little easter egg for no face from spirited away.
Now that the show is finished, I have to say that I really impressed by how accurate the predictions of which character the symbols containing Bill represent
Next time... "What's in an Intro? - True Detective"
+Dkr.Doc "several butts"
Limey Lassen *symbolic butts
I wanna see true ducktective more.
+Mother's Basement DUCK IS THE CRUELEST ANIMAL
+Mother's Basement i dont mean to be that guy but the polka dots are pink
Oh man, never saw bigfoot until you pointed it out :v
Martin Gustavsson During the wierdmeggedon intro Bigfoot is replaced by a tree with feet running.
*thats the whole focus of the shot*
I thought it was Soos running through the forest.
I watch everything becouse of youtube i know everything be becouse of youtube im a big fan of gravity falls i know every secret of gravity falls im a super fan
Joshua Wondolowski you wouldnt even need to pause
English Subject: "The author describes his feelings as like a blue curtain, what do you think did he meant?"
Normal Student: A fking blue curtain.
Author: The curtains are blue
What your English teacher thinks the author meant: The curtains represent his depression, and his lack of will to move on.
What the author meant: The curtains were freakin blue
ty for that.
+Jordan73101 +TorikiYagariki i guess you watch IHE? XD

THANK YOU
I agree 100% about that extra detail in the animation. It's like they threw in twice the amount of frames usually used to give it that more fluid look. It's absolutely wonderful and adds to the wonder and charm this show is filled to the brim with.
Oh- Regarding Stan with the register, I don't think it's stolen (though it wouldn't be out of character for him to pull that off), but rather him running from danger holding tight on to his one true love. Perfectly showing his goofy and greedy side.
8-ball is not the skeleton from the intro. The skeleton from the intro has horns. 8-ball just has massive ears.
Parker Sprague he has hornsin his ears
It is possible that he died a long time ago, (Backed up by the ancient runes), and when resurrected, lost his horns. But, I dunno', it's just a theory.
A game theory
@@ritamsarkar9128 Or he died in the future and Bill used some spacetime shenanagins to move his corpse into those ruins for the specific purpose of scaring the crap out of Dipper.
@@thisdraco4794 wow that actually sounds like something Bill would do 😂
So... where's the Weirdmaggedon part? D:
This was made before that
@@avamatthews1459 it wasn't
It was
@@gulammansoori1033 it wasn't
it was before weirdmagedon 2 and 3, as he says there are only 2 episodes left.
Holy shit, great analysis.
Turns out the intro is even better than I originally perceived it to be.
The fact that every single scene has so much thought put into it and tells us so much about the show and their characters is really amazing. And you did a good job at figuring this all out, and pointing out facts that go beyond that, like the real world connections and the good use of animation principles.
I'm glad we're finally in an era where american animation is finally getting more attention.
It's been getting attention ever since The Simpsons and SpongeBob were made
An analysis on the opening for a show I recently finished and fell in love with... Geoff, you are doing fabulous work
if all does not notice the tower ( GRAVITY FALLS ) to ( JUDYLBW IDOOV ) and sorry my bad english 9:06 - 9:07
I see your three-letters back cipher Jeff

Well, can't argue with that.
I never truly appreciated the animation of Gravity Falls so much until this vid! Really enjoyed every minute of analysis.
Looking forwards to the Bill Cipher'd version analysis.
and that one never came...
I love your videos, I can feel your passion for animation and I deeply share it. You got a new subscriber!
Wow this was a brilliant analysis of the intro! I loved hearing what you had to say about the awesome animation!
I know most people watching this already know this by now but in case not
SPOILER ALERT FOR THE LAST EPISODE!!!
On the wheel, the six fingered hand represents Stanford, the glasses represent Mcgucket, The llama represents Pacifica, the ice represents Wendy and of course the star represents Gideon. The others are pretty clear. Also the wheel is used to seal Bill away.
I love how the summer week trickster is a reference to No Face from Spirited Away; my favourite Ghibli film :)
Summerween
IKR at first I thought it looked similar and then I found out that it actually was a reference! That was one of my favorite references in the show :)
Yes! I love Ghibli so references are always welcome to me haha
I'm just glad I can still watch this video. I've been a fan of Gravity falls since episode 1 and I just heard this youtube channel and specifically this video get mentioned by Pat from Two Best Friends in their podcast 135 around 22:25 into it. I can't believe how much detail about the Gravity Falls characters is in the into animation, that I never would have noticed without this video and it warms my soul and just puts Gravity falls on a higher pedestal for me. So, thank you for the video.
Yes I've been waiting for this and was not disappointed. Nice vid man.
You want to know why those pieces of character animation are so good???? Because LEGENDARY GOD OF ANIMATION *JAMES BAXTER* ANIMATED THEM. If you don't know who that is.......well go look it up????
He's a horse on a ball, obviously.
If you're doing cartoons, can you do the extended theme of Steven Universe???
The thing about that is that it doesn't really show or foreshadow a whole lot even if the song is good. At least not at this point, since Yellow Diamond's Dio Brando shot _did_ have impact back before the character was revealed as well as Connie with Rose's sword, but mostly it just shows stuff people already know and doesn't take much effort to find out
I love the editing you used when showing everyone's symbols!
Wow I don't even know about the big foot
This needed to happen. The opening of Gravity Falls is fucking amazing. Great video, you just got a new subscriber.
Awesome analysis as always. Really happy you're doing more than just anime intros!
Though, makes me wonder, will you be doing videos like this on live action shows, heck, even movies and games as well?
I was gonna get out of bed & be productive, but then you uploaded this lol. I live for these vids
Will you be doing other Western tv show openings? I'd love to hear your take on openings of shows like Cybersix or the DCAU shows
I was kind of surprised you didn't mention it, but that part where Stan is shown for the first time in front of the Mystery Shack literally has a giant sign over his head saying what he is: a hack with mystery behind him.
Those character animations were actually animated by James Baxter, an industry professional character animator who has worked on films like Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Beauty and the Beast.
these videos get me so pumped up
"I'm willing to bet all these characters will play a prominent role in the series finale."
Oh so I wish they really did. Too bad the way it ended was a cop out.
They all did play a prominent role? What do you mean?
Wouᴉʞɐ MONIKA ɒʞinom well Disney rushed the final so Alex had to speed things up quickly but the final wasn't that bad specially in his situation.
The real cop out would've been then just standing in a circle to eliminate Bill.
But it wasn't.
But then it was because spoilers.
The intro is stuck in my head and I LOVE it.
2:24 that alien space ship foreshadowing
This is the best analysis of the Gravity Falls intro among countless others I've seen. I'd also like to add another fact to the table. The scene where gravity goes haywire is supposed to illustrate the show's name: Gravity Falls. When (the level of) gravity falls, there is no gravity. When the level of gravity rises, there is more gravity. So, in the intro and in NWHS, Gravity LITERALLY Falls.
Also, you sound a lot like the person who narrated for the descriptive Gravity Falls opening for blind people.
10 Minutes about a 46 seconds intro. THAT's why I love Gravity Falls :D
That proves it, Gravity Falls is the best animated show ever. Period.
(also you just got a new subscriber)
This was an awesome video. I know so much more about the intro now!
Amazing video!! Like you went through absolutely everything paying so much attention to detail , body language and references. This show is surely twisted as fuck, it got me thinking! Is this show a warning ?
you could go further with how their intros show their best and worst traits, as since Dipper and Mabel are our protagonist we first see ther best traits, so we cna like them, but then we see their negative traits as later in the show we find they're not entirely pure and good people themselves, conversely, we first see stan running with an armful of stolen money, showing that he's introduced as a very negative character who lacks much likeability but then later in the show we find out how much more likeable he is and even find out his good traits and sympathetic backstory.
3:40 No! It's a FUN hazard!
Really well done!!
I hope you'll do another video on the "reverse" opening from Weirdmageddon when it's all finished (when you said you'd review I wasn't sure if you meant the episode or the opening).
I'd also be really interested in seeing analysis on Rick & Morty, or for anime, Noragami/Noragami Aragoto.
Again, great job. Subscribed already!
I just finished both seasons of Gravity Falls and it was better than I expected!
after finishing the show and re-watching this it makes so much sense
i have to watch every episode
life is strange dec 17 lol and btw you did a wonderful review.. its like u disected the whole opening and pointed out the detail that alex hirsch and his team put into the show.. great job
2:47 gravity falls is my favorite tv show and how did i just notice big foot
HEY!!!! in 5:29 the page that dipper is reading, isn't that the page from journal 1?!!
the cyphers put in this show are amazing
This was recommened to me, probably because I watch lots of Gravity Falls stuff... And I'm glad this was recommended. LIKE!
Christ, it's charming going back to these videos before we knew the answers to everything, they basically guessed the entire cryptogram cipher wheel thing, minus the glasses, every guess was on the money
loved it! good analysis of GF opening.
So if you're open to American Animation, what about taking a look at Steven Universe as a series and the latest incarnation of their intro as well? Even if you hate it I'd love to see why.
Whatever happened to that review?
Amazing Analysation! You only forgot that the title card appears in a Tale Of Two Stans as the postcard that Ford sent to Stan. And the Sceleton Dipper finds is not 8 Ball
for the wheel the glasses is mcgucket the llama is pacifica the hand is srandford and the ice is wendy
The S falling off of the mystery shack references to episode 3 where the wax-figure Sherlock Holmes cuts off the "S" while in a sword fight with Dipper.
The only reason I watched this show when it came out was because I just happened to turn on the tv on its premiere and saw this intro. This is such a well done intro and gave me interest in this show (which I am thankful for).
"Gravity Falls reigns supreme."
"Time is dead and meaning has no meaning. Existence is upside down and I reign supreme! Welcome one and all, to Weirdmageddon!"
It's not much, so it's no like you "missed something". But at 1:50 where the "S" in shack falls down. I think it's not accidental that the name "mystery shack" is turned into "mystery hack". Considering that the word "hack", other than the act of hacking, also has a meaning used to describe a person in a negative way. I found kind of inconsistent definitions (although in essence they said the same) when looking, but the best one I could find was: "someone who doesn't do their job properly or professionally". Anyways, regardless of its exact definition, I think a "hack" is what many people would call a fraud like Stan and I seriously doubt it's a coincidence that the shack spelled that out behind him in his introductory scene in the intro. Juxtaposition his showmanship entrance, as if saying "Don't be fooled, this person is just a hack"
you should finish this kind of analysis with the opening/intro of the series you talking is a nice feed back when you wached again with all that information.
Could you now make the weirdmageddon analysis and closing thoughts video mentioned in this one? The "is gf the best..." video introduced me both to this channel and what is now possibly my favourite show of all time, so it would mean a lot if I could see that one last bit of content on it from you. Sorry if it's in the works already.
This was very well done, thanks for the video! c:
This was AWESOME!
Omgawd, I have the same birthday as the creator of Gravity Falls!
Same, best thing to ever happen to me
Dude, this blew my f*ckin' mind. I caught up on GF in like 3 weeks because it was addictive. You caught things that I never even caught (Bigfoot, especially). SUBSCRIBED!
0:43 - THAT STATUE BLINKED
I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE
Didn't notice this.
Great video!
My theory for most of the second season about the ice bag on the wheel was, to keep with the theme of each image being paired with a piece of clothing, that it represented Grenda and her "COOL" shirt. I've never once seen anyone who agreed with me.
Also I've never heard "viginere" pronounced before, I've been saying it wrong this whole time and I thank you for the correct pronunciation.
Love gravity falls so sad its ending! Good video keep up the good work.
Maybe you could break down the original opening of Persona 3, if there's enough there anyway.
There is definitely enough there, and in the tales of openings as well. I'mma make it happen.
+Mother's Basement what about .hack//sign? any interest there?
+Mother's Basement Persona 3 FES pretty much spoils the ending - I recommend you do all three openings (3,FES,Portable)
+Mother's Basement Actually Persona 3's endings are very much like The Truth Behind Your Lie in April due to the fact it heavily hints at the fate of the MC
when this show was first aired, i was terrified of that whisper and i used to mute the volume so i didn't have to hear it XP
Those runes on the wall are the same characters Stan enters when entered the secret room at the end of the first episode.
2:00 The mystery there is how did that severed human ear GET in the bottle?
7:54 Bill call Stan 6 finger. He is the simbol of the journals
Not to be rude but it’s sixer not six finger
Love your content! Keep it up!
The shot of Dipper with the candle is courtesy of James Baxter
Holy hell, I hadn't the slightest idea this show went that deep. I gotta get me glasses updated..
I've never seen Gravity Falls before, and seeing this makes me intrigued. However knowing that I missed so much of it while it was running and have witnessed partial spoilers turns me off from wanting to get invested.
Even though I knew it was going to happen, I still jumped when the eyeballs moved at 5:20
one thing to add is i like that when the stan is running with the cash register you see all the money fly's out. kind of like most of him money schemes in the show have very little to no payout
Panache, nonplussed?
Oh such beautiful verbiage!
So rarely does one encounter such on youtube!
This show sure does have a lot of homages to Twin Peaks. The whole "Not what he seems" thing really screams it to me.
I always thought the runes dipper sees with the candle say F A R T, from down to up.
I like how you're covering a lot of newer, or recent shows. Have you thought about looking at older shows as well? I still consider Trigun's opening to be one of the best.
Hey......
at 8:02 look for the following: up up down down left right left right select start....
that is actually a cheat code to a Nintendo game called Contra!
cool huh?
people never see that coming!
BE GLAD I TOLD YOU THAT!
Might be an animation error, but in the scene from the intro when the world loses its gravity, Dipper's pen AND scribble marks on the floor both take off. I just find that really funny.
If u look at the ufo at 2:09 if u are up to date with gravity falls u will know what this means
Spoilers. 4 those who don't know (again spoilers), the wheel at the end of the Gravity Falls intro is something used 2 seal Bill Cipher in the series finale of Gravity Falls. If I remember correctly , here is what the symbols mean (spoilers) (duh!!) (not that it matters)
Pinetree=Dipper
Shooting Star=Mabel
Claw Thingy Whatever=Stan
Question Mark=Soos
Sewn Heart=Robbie
6 fingered hand=Stan's Brother (forgot name forgive me)
Pentagram=Gideon
Glasses=(Wasn't paying attention but I think it's The crazy man don't know his name though)
Ice Bag=Wendy
Llame=Pacifica
That's what the symbols and the wheel mean.
1:34 I came from his newest video and I may be grasping at straw but is that a doodle of Geoff on dippers suitcase?
nevermind
