I just couldn't believe that young Hohenheim is the first person you see in the first opening but you don't actually see him until like 50 episodes and 2 openings later
13:25 there is so much detail and consistency in this show!!!!! So you know how Ed always sleeps on his back? Well, that's because he has automail limbs on his left and right sides so he can't lie on either side comfortably... but in this shot he's lying on his right side foreshadowing that he got his arm back :O :O
MissAllieOMalley I was actually curious which opening is gonna be at the top cause I love them all and a lot of people also have different opinions, but my favorite was always Again and when I watched this, i would have been pretty disappointed if Again wasn't the top ... I was not disappointed
I know the intention behind that moment is legit, but it always seemed to me that the execution on Winry's "shocking" moment looks kind of silly, specially when - as you pointed out - it follows the dramatic shots of the Elric brothers losing their bodies.
Me when I watch a anime op:This song is catchy.I like it. This guy:Now if the time was better with the animation and the grass was not neon green and then.... Me:Woah.

+Half-Hazard I actually quite like this video series. Especially when it comes to OPs chock full of hidden references, beautiful transitions, foreshadowing like Jojo, Erased, and Re:Zero
“All this rain seems to be good for is hiding peoples tears, all in all it’s a pretty terrible day for it” NOGO SIT IN THE CORNER AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAID
Edward and Winry are my second favourite anime and manga couple, despite the fact that their romantic moments are rare. Their relationship overall is just amazing. It’s so rare in anime, manga, and all types of fictional media to see a boy and a girl who never once let their love for each other affect their dreams, their goals, and themselves. Yes Winry misses Edward terribly and is so afraid for him and Alphonse, but she gets out in the world and establishes a career. Edward loves Winry but not once does that cause him to waver and she doesn’t expect it too. They live now-separate lives that sometimes come together and they both know that nothing can happen until Edward is finished. Plus I love how Winry is both strong and fragile, tomboy and feminine, temperamental and caring, selfless and a bit selfish...there are very few anime/manga heroines like her. She really stands out.
Well said. I also like how the series makes Winry strong without making her a fighter. We see her labor through the night, and more importantly, make compromises for the big picture even when she wants something different. One of my favorite scenes in the series is (SPOILER)... ...when she pulls a gun on Scar, but can't bring herself to fire, even though she knows he killed her parents. It's a wonderfully tense scene, where she's caught between two different ways to honor her parents' memory. And Scar just stands there, giving her the chance to back down. And as the reader, we're never really told why. Is Scar that sure she isn't going to fire? Can he just disintegrate the bullet if she does? Or is he prepared to accept her judgment of him, whatever it might be? We don't know, and that's how it should be. Scar is supposed to be a mystery, someone that Ed and Al don't really understand or trust even if they share some common enemies.
Completely unrelated, but my summer hw in ELA has this essential question ‘what’s the relationship between courage and vulnerability’ and Winry being both strong and fragile like you said just solved all my problems
@@Sayrden Is it mysterious? If I remember he said out loud why. SPOILERS Because he believed he was justified to kill for revenge, and by his same rules he said winry was justified in doing so. On top of that he say something around the line "just remember it was you amastrians that pulled the trigger first" implying that he stands by his other killings (even his attempted murder of Ed) and is implied if Winery were to kill him right there she would be proving his point. Or at least that last part is what I got from the text. Its one of the reasons why that scene is emotionally powerful.
Yeah as I was watching the sereis I actually paused that moment to see wether his right arm was Automail or not cause the shot looked to me like it could've been after they regained their bodies (which is something I knew would happen before watching, it is 2018 after all) and I noticed that these clever little animators decided to try and hide it from me.
Yo, I know this comment is a joke and was made over a year ago, but what if "Again" is a reference to Father trying to make another countrywide transmutation circle AGAIN?
@@papasquash919 Honestly it could be. Like since it happened once, it'll happen again. Or the fact that FMAB is after FMA, so we're back at it again to watch.
I cried tears of joy and sadness. Not sure if anyone else noticed, but at the end of FMAB when Winry is saying goodbye to Ed, she's wearing the jacket he came home in. Also, Ed is taller than her, and earlier in the series she said she wouldn't date anyone shorter than her. Not that we needed the foreshadowing, but we certainly go it XD.
I will stand by my sentiment that FMA is one of if not the greatest mangas ever written. It's honestly a master piece of story telling and the woman who wrote it should be heralded as an industry standard of quality work. It only pleases me even more that FMA went on to have two of the greatest anime adaptations of all time too, complete with kickass OPs. If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and watch/read some Full Metal Alchemist.
For me, the manga was a perfect blend of both Brotherhood and the original, since it keeps several of the side stories that would have made Brotherhood at the very least a near-perfect anime.
It is one of the best manga/ anime. But it’s not the greatest. My favorite anime is pretty bad (Code Geass) but the best manga imo will always be jojo. Name another manga that has impacted so many manga or anime after it. (FMA is my 3rd favorite anime btw)
Hologram is my favorite song from either series, but I agree that its shot composition, animation and story telling value were relatively low. But just because I liked the song so much it kinda makes me sad to see it so low on this list.
16:49 Wow, I can't believe I only now noticed this amazing cut between both OPs with Lust connecting each shot. It makes everything flow much better and most people won't ever notice it.
Funny because the second Brotherhood OP was always my favorite, and I felt super vindicated when they chose to play HOLOGRAM as the last song in the show
Cybershell I did too! The fact that Opening 2 was the final song choice of the series, was like a major slap in the face to those who said that the 2nd Brotherhood Opening isn’t as good as the others. Easily, my favorite.
I noticed that too when I first saw that opening. it's one of the reasons Rain is my favorite. such a deep and emotional shot of my favorite character.
*When your favourite opening is Hologram* Also, I knew it sounded like a Naruto song, considering this is the one where you've got Ninjas Naruto running around, I'm not surprised.
I used to didn't like it that much but then I rewatched the anime 9 years after the first time I watched it, and that song played at the end of the last episode and I was just crying my eyes out and kept listening to the song for the next several days and that's how it became one of my favorite
Yeah... When I first saw that shot, it made me think that he was going to die, but after I knew about his sacrifice, I just went "Hey, that was foreshadowing in a different way!"
Not only the animation, they match extremely well with the story and context as well, matching perfectly with the motivations and feelings of at first Ed's father, and later Ed himself.
I think Rewrite, aside from the fabulous animation, has my favorite individual cut out of any of the OPs, when it cuts from Mustang drowning his sorrows to Winry, the person connected most directly to the source of his trauma, then to Hawkeye, the person who helps him deal with it the most. It's a great little bit of visually reminding the audience of his motivation
Again became my favorite OP as soon as I heard it. Everything about the song itself is amazing to me and the visuals left me stunned. Overall; I just love Again.
Quick question: Is the sea of people in Period representing what mustang said? "I'll help those I love, and they'll help the ones they love. Eventually everyone will be helped." Idk if that is the exact quote, but I thought that is what the sea appearing one person at a time represented.
"They have like four different shades of blue for a clear sky at roughly the same time of day" Yes, that happens in real life. The sky is weird like that.
You call yourself biased... well in your shoes Golden Time Lover would be even higher lol But honestly, the top 3 made me legit tear up, that's how much FMA means to me... forever two masterpieces.
I'm sorry but it's really bothering me that you have paid no attention whatsoever to the MUSIC - not just the sound but the LYRICS in your anime opening reviews (especially when it comes to Hologram). I enjoy watching your videos and I strongly agree with most of the points you make because I honestly believe you're one of the most objective people analysing anime here. However, the animation and scenes match the lyrics more than they do the music when it comes to FMA and FMAB. That little bit you talk about the transitions between scenes and apparent lack of unity in Hologram is much more meaningful than what you make it seem to be. My Japanese is very limited but when it transitions from the Elric brothers to May, Ling and then to Roy, the lyrics talk about walking towards the future despite only taking tiny steps at a time - which is what all those three characters are doing in their own way... I really want to point out other details of the sort in this analysis but I believe they are important for you to take into account when doing something like this... you cannot talk about how well an anime opening sequence works without even pondering over the lyrics written specifically for it.
why would he pay attention to music, he isnt a musisian and knows nothing about mustic, whereas he knows a TONNNNNE about animation and art design, music doesnt really play into it, unless the visuals dont match it, which is an animation problem, Hologram is the best song out of them, not the best OP... and oyu dont get browny points for having a good song, well not in "Whats in an OP" you dont :P i completely agree with this ranking because of it. to address your point about each character persuing their goals differently, to do this is kind of a cop out but its acually better to have the same visuals consistant throughout, such as saturation and, well litterally anything, then you need to actually include some of the themes of the show, like at least twice or something?-now even though it didnt do this, it still scored higher than nearly every Naruto opening and definatly SAO, its just how the scoring system works. if you wish to incorporate these things into your own ranking system for your own channel, i'd watch that video. however what you are asking is for someone without, (I i am only assuming here plz correct if i am wrong) detailed knoledge about song production and the economic skill required to incorporate bespoke songs into an animation. but if you ignore the aspects of how good you perceive the song to be, then i believe you may have a similar opinion to the video, however regardless you are entitled to your own opinion (no hate) :3 to conclude: g3t rekt
@@nyanbrox5418 Oh, hey! I never even noticed I got likes for that comment since I switched to a new channel lol. I am not a musician either (nor am I particularly well-versed in musical composition or analysis) but, as a literature student, I have a huge passion for well-written stuff even if I can't write for shit - hence my love for FMA in the first place. When it comes to analyzing an OP, I think it's super important to take into account the song because it's what the whole animation is timed to! (especially since the songs' LYRICS tend to be specifically written for the series) While I do agree with most of MB's points in this video, I believe one of the things the animators and directors did best when it comes to FMA and FMAB OPs was timing the lyrics with the visuals properly. Sadly, there's a lot of OPs that don't do that meaningfully. The changes in visuals in Hologram, in particular, coincide with the lyrics so as to tell a sort of intro to the stories of the characters in the second season of FMAB. The song itself is a bit all over the place, jumping from a hopeful tone to a darker one with the little moments of past and current struggles (imo) melding the 'backstory' of the characters with what comes next for them. My Japanese is a bit rusty, but if I remember correctly, it starts with "Invited by a pure-white landscape, I go into a yet unseen world", which explains the changes between the b&w and the bright colors. What follows is how the Elrics feel lost, "wandering under a grey sky", and hopefully wondering if, with the tiny steps they're taking, they'll ever be able to go beyond the clouds to reach their many dreams (which applies to the Elrics, Mei Ling, Ling Yao, Mustang, etc). I also feel like there's little references to other OPs in this bit (like Ranma 1/2, as MB pointed out). It then jumps to Ed and his father - both of whom "got hurt when trying to appear stronger" - and the "falling raindrops" - the obstacles they have to endure - continue. That first bit is just an example, and I believe the rest of the OP continues following the lyrics (and their tone) for the most part. This OP has a special place in my heart because its song fits really well with the ending of the series too- the characters have overcome the struggles suggested in the OP and gone into a world they hadn't yet seen after accomplishing their goals. The OP is so much more meaningful when you are also listening to the lyrics because the animation matches them rreeeaaally well - imo. I would very much love to do my own video-analysis because I LOVE WATCHING THEM but I'm not particularly skilled at video editing lol. Thanks for the comment tho, it allowed me to geek out like fuck here :P
"All this rain seems good for is hiding people's tears. All in all, it's a terrible day for it." Damn it, why did you do this to me? There's no rain to hide my tears at my desk at work.
On number op 4: It actually has alot more direction than you might think. The op starts with ed reaching towards the sky, as if reaching for truth (or god) and after he realises there is nothing, he smashes a white flower. White flowers are usually used for funerals. The flower signifies death and his lack of respect for death is shown by smashing it. ED then gets up and faces his troubles and arrogantly goes and fights it, getting kicked back to the ground again. Then everything else in the op serves as a dive in to his troubles and people hes met and whats to come. It then ends with ed back at the start after almost getting to the light, and while hes frustrated, this time he doesn't smash the flower. Instead his hand acts almost like a lense too focus on the flower, too respect or analise death. The rest is told in the video.
yeah we all noticed the flower thing, nice detail on its implications though, if we did this for all OPs from FMA and FMAB we would litterally be here all day :3
bruh can't believe you put my favorite intro in last place. visuals be damned the song is way too good. makes me way more nostalgic for the times i watched this show with my brother than any of the other songs. list was kinda redeemed though when you put the 2nd best intro in 2nd place haha
hologram is actually my favorite opening, i just like the song. I think it's the best lyrically. It's so upbeat. I think the song concluding the anime was the perfect ending for the show
FMAB was my first anime at age 15 (anime was considered taboo by my parents while growing up). I remember hearing how amazing it was but being skeptical and sitting through the first couple minutes of episode 1. I was about to say “nah I’ll pass” when Ed started screaming and beating up the bad guy for calling him short in the manga-esque black and white shots. I laughed hysterically and fell in LOVE with the characters and that was how I became a FMAB superfan and decided to become an anime nerd and fangirl in general ever since. More wholesome yet, I cherish this moment because it was one of my older sister’s boyfriends that introduced me and my sister to this show in the first few months of dating and the fact that art can come from anywhere and animation is a fantastic medium for it. There was no need for it to be taboo just because it “wasn’t commercial or American”. Years later, I am studying to become a television animation producer hopefully for either anime or videogames and that boyfriend is now a cherished older brother to me and husband to my sister and I long for the next few years when I get to become the fun crazy aunt I’ve always wanted to be. This show brought all of us together and gave me a sibling bond that will last forever. Thank you FMAB! :)
Jesus christ I cried so hard from watching those intros, and for most of them it was my first time seeing them (I watched some of Brotherhood, and read all of the manga), Again by Yui is overall one of my favorite anime intros, period. Also I just love this guy.
rewrite is my favorite FMA opening. Tonally and animation wise it just gets everything right (well mostly) and that final shot of ed turning to the camera....DAMN did that give me chills back in the day when i was watching the series at that point in the season
Your analysis and critique of "Again" got me thinking about it. Watching it again to confirm an idea. My favorite part of it is Greed's two seconds in it, since he's my favorite character of the franchise. Thinking about it, his placement in the OP in accordance to the song was probably intentional like anything else in it; I just want to talk about his part. He appears towards the end of the fast-paced build-up, like second-to-last line before the chorus. It may be a stretch to say this, but perhaps that's representative of how the Devil's Nest part (in opinion) is a turning point for the plot. Meeting Greed made Ed and Al (and by extension the military supporting cast) aware of the homunculi, and meeting him, in my impression, was like the end of the setup episodes ((first verse and bridge)) before we get into the heart of the story, the more serious and deep part of the plot ((chorus and on)). Heck, his brief two seconds in the OP can be parallel to his first life's mere two episodes (only a small slice of time compared to the fact the entire Brotherhood anime is 64 episodes). Again, all of this might be a stretch.
Brotherhood didn't mess it up it just didn't dedicate as much time to him. So the impact of Nia's death wasn't felt as deep as the original by the viewer. However, I personally think the show handled Nia better as the ending scene references her which I think is really cool
+James Stirling Also that Brotherhood killed him with Nina whereas the original kept him alive to show he regretted his actions by trying to find a way to give his Nina "doll" a soul.
I don't think it's pointless. I actually liked the fate of shou tucker in the original, instead giving him the quick death. It showed how he suffered horribly from what he did and ultimately failed to reach the salvation he desperately tried to find.
6dj6 That's true but that whole point was made in one line in Fmab. Ed couldn't bring back Nina with alchemy and neither could Tucker. Of course Fma did do show not tell which is admirable. I just didn't really care about Nina or Tucker in the first place so skipping over them but also keeping the lesson was what I personally liked. That's why I felt like it was pointless to extend that message in fma but that's just me
I think Hologram did a good job introducing it's arc. With all the interjections of the Xingeses and backstories being revealed, I think it captured the feel of the plot that began to pick up quite a bit from the first part of fmab.
Lol fmab opening 2 turns out to be my favorite because of the rock music. It synergises with the mood of the show at that point, getting you pumped up because of the many different scenarios happening at once. Mustang trying to expose the homonculi, Edward being taken away to Xerxes, learning about scar's secret and meeting his father. With a FCC gv g dose of alphonse catching up with ling and ling furthering his advancements with achieving immortality. Although this goes without saying that it is all in my opinion. :P
ugh man, this was AMAZING but i could listen for hours for you going into detail about just how fucking good "again" is, i would watch a whole separate video on that
I was wondering why you didn't mention the Ed, Al, and Winry being torn apart and shaken, and then you do at the end validating everything I ever thought about that scene. I am pleased.
This just goes to show that Winry is Edward's sun, she is the light that pushes him forward, the light that calls him home, that envelopes and comforts him in a way that no one else could. God she is just such an amazing written and portrayed character! Winry is love and she is amazing!!
Melissa was the best opening for me in my opinion, it's just so catchy and I sing it anywhere I go. When I watched the original series for the second time I sang to it in Japanese the best I could, its just so jazzy and I even have it on my phone so I just listen to it over and over again.
The one thing that bothers me in Golden Time Lover is after the first part of the chorus, there is a cut around 1:13 of the opening, showing Ed and Al dealing with their inner demons only to go back around 1:17 to the previous shot of Ed trying to escape Envy's maw. I always found that cut jarring since 4 seconds isn't much time to forget about that one shot, but nevertheless it's a great opening, like every single one in the show.
The god of anime is whatever show you want it to be. Still though, its easy to see why fma is so loved it deserves its popularity. Those other anime are no were near as popular as fma, so thats me atleast to most people they did something wrong.
***** It's simple actually, talk about both anime to a number of people and without a doubt most will know fma. It sounds stupid, but thats just how it is. Also, I didnt mention the movies, I know they're popular as fuck. I was just talking about the anime.
***** Yes, because sao had a good first half. Anime is different from other media in terms of hype and popularity. The community makes an anime popular and gives it hype. Anime have very little advertisement and marketing. So no matter what, shows that are good WILL gain traction. Sao was good, and it turned to shit. Sao wasnt shit from the very beginning, if it was then it simply wouldnt be popular.
Chills man, chills I have always loved the part with the lightning tearing away Ed’s lost limbs and Al’s whole body, it’s always been my favourite part. So great to see someone talking about it!

FireFist if someone says that to me I would fade on sight

True true
Second favourite? Who’s your favourite?
Completely unrelated, but my summer hw in ELA has this essential question ‘what’s the relationship between courage and vulnerability’ and Winry being both strong and fragile like you said just solved all my problems
@@Sayrden
Is it mysterious? If I remember he said out loud why.
SPOILERS
Because he believed he was justified to kill for revenge, and by his same rules he said winry was justified in doing so.
13:20 it's also a nice touch that they completely hide Ed's right arm under the pillow and his body as to not spoil what happens to it

OH MY GOD THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Yeah as I was watching the sereis I actually paused that moment to see wether his right arm was Automail or not cause the shot looked to me like it could've been after they regained their bodies (which is something I knew would happen before watching, it is 2018 after all) and I noticed that these clever little animators decided to try and hide it from me.

The first OP is called "Again" cause they know damn well you'll watch this anime again. Masterpiece of an anime.
@@RollingAudio1 Thank you for commenting after over a year lmao. That also makes perfect sense.
I think it's a reference to the first 12 episode which the OP plays over telling the story AGAIN.
Amazing how he used every synonym of the word "awesome" to describe the #1 spot.
xD
It's an accurate description of the OP, not gonna lie.
When I finished watching the series I cried so badly because i was sad that it had ended

Me too 😅😅😅
Recently fma and demon slayer openings have been stuck in my head during all my classes. not that I mind.
DuwangChew Hehe I watched BOTH anime adaptations.
And I loved it
It is one of the best manga/ anime. But it’s not the greatest. My favorite anime is pretty bad (Code Geass) but the best manga imo will always be jojo. Name another manga that has impacted so many manga or anime after it.

You didn't mention how the lyrics of the songs correlate with the animation. In "again" they all mesh perfectly. All of them, it's almost creepy.
Not only the animation, they match extremely well with the story and context as well, matching perfectly with the motivations and feelings of at first Ed's father, and later Ed himself.
This makes me wonder, were the songs made for the shows or were they just songs that they acquired the rights to?
I think Rewrite, aside from the fabulous animation, has my favorite individual cut out of any of the OPs, when it cuts from Mustang drowning his sorrows to Winry, the person connected most directly to the source of his trauma, then to Hawkeye, the person who helps him deal with it the most. It's a great little bit of visually reminding the audience of his motivation

I really want to point out other details of the sort in this analysis but I believe they are important for you to take into account when doing something like this... you cannot talk about how well an anime opening sequence works without even pondering over the lyrics written specifically for it.
why would he pay attention to music, he isnt a musisian and knows nothing about mustic, whereas he knows a TONNNNNE about animation and art design, music doesnt really play into it, unless the visuals dont match it, which is an animation problem,
Hologram is the best song out of them, not the best OP... and oyu dont get browny points for having a good song, well not in "Whats in an OP" you dont :P
i completely agree with this ranking because of it.
to address your point about each character persuing their goals differently, to do this is kind of a cop out but its acually better to have the same visuals consistant throughout, such as saturation and, well litterally anything, then you need to actually include some of the themes of the show, like at least twice or something?-now even though it didnt do this, it still scored higher than nearly every Naruto opening and definatly SAO, its just how the scoring system works.
if you wish to incorporate these things into your own ranking system for your own channel, i'd watch that video.
however what you are asking is for someone without, (I i am only assuming here plz correct if i am wrong) detailed knoledge about song production and the economic skill required to incorporate bespoke songs into an animation. but if you ignore the aspects of how good you perceive the song to be, then i believe you may have a similar opinion to the video, however regardless you are entitled to your own opinion (no hate) :3
to conclude: g3t rekt
Johny Broxy They really just mean the lyrics which he can analyze and I think he maybe mentioned them once in a video. It would be interesting.

Damn it, why did you do this to me? There's no rain to hide my tears at my desk at work.
On number op 4:
It actually has alot more direction than you might think.

I love the first brotherhood opening so much that I've actually memorized the lyrics
Period is my favorite, the animation is just beautiful with the best OP music.

Could you do an analysis of the differences between the Shou Tucker scenes? I'm not 100% on what you mean by Brotherhood messing it up
Brotherhood didn't mess it up it just didn't dedicate as much time to him.
ImaginaryXxXShadow Yeah but it was ultimately pointless

I like how passionately you talk, you are so fucking hyped.
Melissa was the best opening for me in my opinion, it's just so catchy and I sing it anywhere I go. When I watched the original series for the second time I sang to it in Japanese the best I could, its just so jazzy and I even have it on my phone so I just listen to it over and over again.
I'm okay with you doing episodes for fma for 2 months
I don't think any would.
+zman2748 me too FMA FOREVER!
Finally watched FMA: Brotherhood and SWEET JESUS THAT SHOW IS BEAUTIFUL
my fav is golden time lover
Oy
Definitely rewrite for me
ye e e e s
The one thing that bothers me in Golden Time Lover is after the first part of the chorus, there is a cut around 1:13 of the opening, showing Ed and Al dealing with their inner demons only to go back around 1:17 to the previous shot of Ed trying to escape Envy's maw. I always found that cut jarring since 4 seconds isn't much time to forget about that one shot, but nevertheless it's a great opening, like every single one in the show.
FMA is hands down the God of anime. Anyone wants to argue, show them this video. Bet a $100 they'll be hooked by this video and watching the series.
I still prefer Deathnote.
Blue Bom Nah
Chills man, chills
I have always loved the part with the lightning tearing away Ed’s lost limbs and Al’s whole body, it’s always been my favourite part. So great to see someone talking about it!
