Okay, I figured it out. To make this work you have to turn off the lid closure that causes the laptop to go into Sleep mode. On the current version of Windows 10. Find the battery icon in the Systray (bottom right). Right click on it and choose power options. On the screen that comes up, look on the left for a reference to closing the lid. Click on that and change the lid closure when not on battery to *Never*. Since I only use the desktop monitor when the laptop is plugged I don't need the computer to Sleep.

First, the fan started making a lot of noise (noisier than when laptop sitting flat on desk), and then it started heating up, especially when I'm using several applications at the same time, and it keeps going to sleep on me. What could be causing that?

What I did was use the vga port on my laptop to connect it to my monitor and since my laptop also has a hdmi port and I got a new tv I used my old tv as a third monitor monitor (i was also using my laptop screen)
Step 1: Buy/ get a laptop.
Step 2: Remove it from the lap
Step 3: Put it on the desk.
