    This is an amazing use of old hardware. All this was missing was ditching the wifi card for a USB wifi dongle to leverage that M.2 key connector for an external gpu riser and then slotting in an Rx 560 and sfx PSU.
    I would happily use that as HTPC.

    • @raghavsaraswat2306
      @raghavsaraswat2306 4 роки тому +2

      Could you provide links to any of those risers? I have a laptop with a core i5 6200U and an AMD R5 M430 gpu that I would like to turn into an AIO desktop.
      Much appreciated!!

    Great work, one idea though:
    Rather than a normal desktop it's a better candidate for a low power NAS since it has 3 SATA ports. There are 2 normal ones and a smaller one for optical drive which can be converted to a normal one with an ODD-to-HDD adapter. Use one as a system drive for NAS OS and you still have room for two data drives.

    that is a pretty sweet design and repurposing of a laptop we should all look to ways to extend the use of something i mean you could always do something like this with a laptop you no longer need and present it to someone as a gift etc

    you can't just swap out the lcd panel to anything, that's a bad idea.
    even if the display connectors are the same (they usually are), it doesn't always mean the pinout is. you could potentially short circuit the motherboard, exactly like it happened to one of my old laptop projects (RIP)
    anyway.. loving the way it turned out and thank you for the inspiration. i'm definitely going to try and build something like this in the future :)

    for desktop audio, the options are limitless, just add an external DAC which the laptop can push digital audio through usb to the DAC and you will get the best amplified sound with a good set of 2.1 speakers.

    I've got almost the same laptop as my main(mine has nvidia graphics). It was taken apart several times by now(two times for clening). Because of a failed cpu upgrade attempt, the bios now thinks that the cpu model is different from what it really is, and also periodically shuts off the secondary hard-drive even while accessing data from it. Many might think it has to be thrown away, but hey.....it has been doing this for the last 1.5 year but still going strong. Battery still works. >6years old. :)

      @Chris Valin I thought that as well, but no one with a heat gun is going to do that type of damage unless they didn't care. Ive seen what boards look like after they have been put in the oven.. This looks dead on. Sure a heat gun could do it, but why? and wouldnt the damage be localized instead of the *entire* board?
