A large freezer type bag, that you insert into the pocket in the setback in front of you. .... during the flight you put your things in it, instead of the pocket itself - no germs! Then put it in the garbage when the flight is ending and you are packing your things up.

Great list! For me, disinfecting wipes are a must. The minute I get on the plane I'm swabbing down the tray table, entertainment controls, armrests, and don't forget the seatbelt buckle. Just assume the previous person in your seat didn't wash his hands after using the washroom and you'll know what you need to do. I also like to take a small bag that can be used for garbage and some sort of clip to hold it onto the seat pocket in front of me (and I never, ever stick my hand into that seat pocket!). For an eye mask, look for one that has bugged-out eyes - it's much more comfortable to have something that isn't touching your eyelashes. If you have discomfort in your ears when flying, or don't know if you will (or if your children will), I highly recommend Earplanes ear plugs which slow down the air pressure changes. There is a children's version available. If you're using Earplanes you'll need to use the over-ear style of noise-cancelling headphones. Compression socks can be found in dark, solid colours - you might need to order online, but they exist. I like clothing that is super soft and has zippered pockets so I can keep small items close and not lose them while I'm sleeping. My flight uniform is a French terry cardigan with zippered pockets, and a pair of Eddie Bauer hiking pants with zippered pockets on the legs. One thing I have learned in many years of flying is that realistically, I am not going to retrieve anything out of my bag in the overhead bin during a flight. That bag is just for the things I absolutely need at my destination, even if my checked bag goes astray. Anything I need during the flight needs to be in one of those zippered pockets, so that includes single-use disposable toothbrushes, a sample size of dental floss, tissues, lip balm etc.

Great tips. RE: JET LAG… I am retired at 50 and travel between my homes in Houston Texas and Bangkok Thailand 4 times a year. (I’ve also been to about 80 countries.) The day before travel, I reset my watch and mind to destination time zone by not sleep. Airlines are super bad at keeping their whole inflight schedule to origin time zone, so you really have to have a personal plan for getting sleep, naps, food, etc. that will get you pre-acclimated by the time you arrive. 👏🏻 Thanks for sharing. 😃👍🏻🇺🇸🇹🇭

Personally, I would recommend taking magnesium glycinate along with the melatonin. The melatonin simulates the hormones that your body puts out to become sleepy, but the magnesium often helps you sleep deeper or longer because it relaxes your muscles, can reduce restlessness, and consequently reduce some of the stress/anxiety that comes with traveling.

The fan is helpful with temperature and smell adjustments. 😊 Sometimes I just want to feel moving air to counter any anxiety from mild claustrophobia. Another tip for flights....when they adjust the air pressure, if you get the pain in your ears? You can deliberately pop them. They train us on this in the Submarine Fleet. I think it's called "the desalva maneuver" but don't quote me on that.
But basically you take a deep breath, then you hold your nose closed with your thumb and index finger, such that you can't breathe through your nose, then you attempt to exhale through your nose. Do this until you feel one ear pop and then the other. Sometimes you have to do it more than once.
You do have to be careful, theoretically if you do it hard enough you'll pass out, but put just enough pressure that you can feel the pressure build up, that should be enough to pop them!
We have to adjust air pressure on the submarine sometimes when we change depth, that's why they train us to do that. 🙂

Lots of great tips here. Compression socks come in solid colors, and any pattern imaginable. Nurses wear them All. THE. TIME. Another great way to beat jet lag is to trace your acupuncture meridians every time you change time zones. (Just "trace" with your fingers. Eden Energy Medicine has lots of videos about this.) Every meridian is associated with an hour, AM and PM. When you change time zones, trace all the meridians starting with the one that corresponds with the current time in the new time zone. It sounds crazy, but works great.

Noise-cancelling headphones vs ear buds/pods: Battery life! Buds/pods are okay for short, domestic flights (less than a few hours.) People often use them pre-flight, too (thus, less power/hours for use on your flight.) I opt for over-the-ear models instead, because they usually have 3X the battery life. Mine also use AAA batteries, so i can bring a few spares.
Hand wipes AND hand sanitizer? I'd just bring the wipes, and use them for hands & face, too.
    Neck pillow us a MUST!!!
Pen: I also bring a small pocket-sized spiral notebook (in case you need to create/update checklists, or write down phone numbers, directions, etc.) Pens are also helpful for those in-flight magazine crossword puzzles, too.
Toothpaste & toothbrush are good. Mouthwash can be replaced with mint-style breath-freshenjng chewing gums. Plus, chewing gum helps clear your ears/sinususes from the cabin pressures. But, you CAN replace the contents of a small TSA-friendly mouthwash bottle with NiQuill (nite formula,) instead? Good for coughs, AND sleep!
I don't personally take sleep-aids during flights, however. I don't want to become a zombie to neighboring theives, or unclear if there's an in-flight emergency.
For jet lag, I'd suggest pre-conditioning yourself, instead. To fly from USA to Europe can take days to a full week to recover. So, pre-invest by adjusting your rythym the week BEFORE your flight. Trying to accomodate a week of jet-lag in just a 12-16hr flight, ain't gonna be enoungh. Sure, it will help a bit. But, to do it RIGHT and maximize your travel/vacation/trip, you should pre-adjust the week/days BEFORE your trip.
Note: Blankets on flights can be rare nowadays, ir germ-filled from prior pasengers. I opt to bring a lightweight (water repellant) wind breaker or fleece. If I need a blanket, I'll just use my fleece/windbreaker. I prefer the windbreaker as an optional raincoat. Whereas, I prefer the fleece if there is cold/snow at my destination.
    Safe travels!

I always carry a pen when traveling for just those reasons. I also carry a Sharpie. I use it to write down my next flight number on my hand so I can figure out where it is when we are changing planes. I’m often groggy after a long plane ride and looking at the departure boards, sometimes the number all start running together in my mind. So having that flight number on my hand is very…handy.

I agree with all of these. I didn’t really realized until I watched this, but the things you mention are the things I always pack in my backpack due to experiences. I felt annoyed when I didn’t have a pen to fill out custom forms, hence I always bring a pen. I felt gross when I didn’t brush my teeth during a 17hr flight, so I always pack a tooth brush and paste. Experience is a good teacher.

For me it’s the Cabeau neck pillow - it supports your head and neck without pushing it forward. As a person who suffers neck pain and migraines on a regular basis this is an absolute must. It rolls up into it’s own case the size of a soup mug.

If your neck pillow is pushing your head forward, you’ve got it on backwards. The fat part goes in front to hold up your head and the open part goes to the back - so your head doesn’t get pushed forward.

Always pack a pen! Antibacterial wipes to clean the tray table, arms of your chair, seat belt buckle and window. Due to fast turnarounds, there is minimal cleaning. I always like leaving a place cleaner than I found it. Plus, the last thing you want when going on vacation is a cold or flu from someone who didn't cover their sneeze or a little kid with a runny nose wiping his nose then touching the chair arm. There are travel packs that take up very little room. Leaving it cleaner than I found it also applies to the bathroom. If there is a mess of water & spilled soap on the counter, I'll get a couple paper towels and mop it up before I wash my hands. I draw the line at wiping down the toilet lid. I know the cleaning crew will do that one!

Great advice about the compression socks. I did a 15 hour flight from Japan and couldn't walk after. Socks make a massive difference. Well done for this good advice. For electrolytes you can buy for next to nothing Dioralyte Sachet. Pen is a great idea, don't get a cheap one as they can leak due to cabin pressure and ruin all your clothes.
Noise cancelling headphones still bombard your hearing with WHITE NOISE which can cause migraines and tinnitus better to invest in some decent ear plugs.

    • @felikso
      @felikso 7 місяців тому

You do also need to be careful with wearing ear plugs (or full ear defenders, like I do!), because they can cause tinnitus too - but in my own experience, using ear defenders regularly for a few years now (I'm autistic with noise sensitivity), if you stop wearing them when your ears start feeling a bit ringing-y or reverb-y and give yourself a proper break (for multiple days at the least), you should be okay. - But I'm also a massive advocate for ear defenders: mine were suuuuper cheap compared to noise-cancelling headphones, they never run out of charge, and they work very reliably! As long as you don't mind standing out a little, haha

  • @jonbarnard7186
    @jonbarnard7186 8 місяців тому +3

Don't forget disinfectant wipes to wipe down the tray, seatbelt buckle, and anything else you're going to touch when in your seat. Got knows how often these things get disinfected, probably never. You don't want to get sick the first day of your vacation.

I have flown to Japan before and I tried to go to sleep - nope. Could not do it and I was up for over 24 hours over the course of when I got up for the flight to when I got to the hotel. But a good sleep aid would be very helpful and the app that gives me a schedule let’s me know when to sleep. Plus now I have noise cancelling headphones.

Compression socks or sleeves can be a challenge to remove. After developing deep vein thrombosis, I bought Hobrave compression wraps. They wrap around my shin and fasten with velcro. Lifesaver! Due to my condition, i wear them daily to prevent blood clots and swelling.
Toothpaste in tablet form is an option.
Drip Drop Hydration Powder packets have 3x the electrolytes than other brands. I like them even better than Gatorade.
I bought a TRTL neck pillow back when the prices were reasonable. I have a 1-hour plus commute to work. I wear it and take a nap on the way there and back to home. Ive tried many, many neck pillow styles and this is the best. Temu has an excellent copy at less than $10.00. I've bought it, used it and it is just as good an effective as the TRTL brand.

Do use almost all the stuff - but new to me is the dramamine Ginger chews - great tip. I always have an empty water bottle - (I use a filtering type) so I fill that up before boarding plan (after customs) if you stay very hydrated - it really helps jet lag (and you don't have to bug the stewardess for water). I eat protein/nutrition bars like a beast and then sleep (mask on & noise cancel earplugs) - or at least close my eyes and rest a many hours as I possibly can - hit the ground running when I land.

    1) If you can find it, Gatsby brand or Biore menthol wipes instead of Wet Ones to wipe off your sweat. Pack that in your every day bag when you're moving about as well - it leaves you with a cool fresh feeling. 2) if you need a medical device (CPAP, etc.) as a sleep aid, invest in a mini version (you'll need a separate prescription from your current prescription for your full device). But BEFORE you do that, you'll need to register your medical device with the airline carrier you'll be traveling with (domestic AND international) and have that documentation with you. So IF you decide to use that device on the plane, you'll be cleared to use it in advance. You should be able to find it under the airline's Contract of Carriage - they usually have a list of approved devices.

    - Face masks
    - Antibacterial surface wipes (10 sheets per flight, adjust accordingly based on your projected visits to the loo or out of your seat)
    - Cotton gloves
In some countries catching it in flight means you'll need to start self-isolating in your hotel and cancel your plans for at least the first week.
