I agree with all except the eye mask lol. Ya’ll need to do some pushups and increase your organizational skills if you think an eye mask is too bulky or you lose it easily in your pack.
As a73 year old, very experienced traveller, I also use a buff... Very comfortable for long flights and big help to keep buds secure... Especially when having a nap... Easy to lose buds drop out.. @@ellie_ellie_ellie
We no longer take a lot of liquids with us, instead we take toothpaste tabs, solid lotion bar and a solid shampoo bar. With a capsule wardrobe using black, grey, brown and blue, I can pack 4 tops, 1 hoodless sweatshirt, 1 pair of blue jeans and 1 pair of black jeans, 5 pairs of Mereno wool socks, 5 undies, 2 bras, lightweight PJ's, a sleeveless quick dry turtleneck for layering, and long sleeve fitted quick dry top for layering, 2 pairs of black leotards for layering and 4 thin linen scarves. By mixing and matching I can create at least 12 different outfits. Everything is packed in a 36 litre Osprey Farpoint wheeled backpack. We are planning a 3-month trip to Europe and UK with just this bag and a personal item bag which will double as our day bags. Instead of a bulky water bottle we take a 9-ounce Swell bottle, keeps water super cold, keeps you hydrated and doesn't take up a ton of space. There are so many way to save space, weight and stress when packing carry-on only!
I invested in a couple of space savers recently & couldn't be happier. I bought the bar shampoo and conditioner from Lush and then bought the Matador soap bag to carry them in. The shampoo lasts forever, works great, doesn't count as a liquid, and takes up minimal space. The Matador soap bag has some sort of technology that allows the shampoo bar to dry without getting goopy. It's been a game changer.
I bought a 5 pack of contact lens cases at dollar tree and filled with different toiletries. One has face scrub, another case has face cream, and another case has Vaseline in one side and Vicks in the other side. Used a marker to write what is in side. And had left overs even after a week traveling. This made carry on The best experience and learned a long time ago to wear clothes more than once, mix and match. . Great video … thanks so much.
I just went on a 10 day trip to the Scottish highlands last week (cold, wet, windy, dark), and I did it all in a carry-on thanks to your packing tips. This channel is much appreciated!
I have a manta sleep eye mask and I LOVE it for plane rights but I also love it for airbnbs. Sometimes they don’t have curtains so eye mask has been so helpful for us
I travel a lot. I have shoulder problems. I will gladly pay to check my bag and not have to deal with possibly hurting my shoulders (which ruins my trip) by putting my bag in the overhead. I keep an AirTag in the bag, and I carry a small backpack with my most important things like my meds and documents. My checked bag still is carry-on size but it’s 100% worth the investment to be able to get in and out of the plane easily, and not have to hurt my shoulders. I have never lost a bag. I guess the only drawback would be that I have to wait to collect my luggage at my destination, but I use that time to get caught up, use the restroom, and stretch my legs. Never heard of a buff but in colorado we call it a neck gator. I prefer bringing a bandana or two. Even more useful, because you can use them as a washcloth, a scarf, eye cover, shade cloth, hair tie - so many uses and very easy to wash and dry.
We have a 7 kilo weight limit in Australia with most of the airlines for carry on and you have to pay more for checked luggage. I go for a bar for shampoo and conditioner as I’m highly allergic and bar deodorant. I don’t use a toiletry bag as I use zip lock plastic bags as less weight and see through. Sunglasses are important to have UV protection as you can develope macular degeneration and can protect you from skin cancer.
Inflatable neck pillow with a soft fleece case. I flew 24500 miles last year. Pillow, eyemask, pad, and noise canceling ear buds made the difference on 15+ hour flights!
When hubby and I drove through the Yucatan peninsula decades agoI found an incredible painted clay statute of a Mayan woman. I carried her home on my lap. When we went to Jamaica I bought a large wooden carved statue of a woman and carried her home as well. It was worth the hassle as I still have them and they are a great remembrance of those fantastic trips.
Totally agree. This was going to be 1 of my comments. And given that these items have SO many other uses (towel, picnic blanket, table cloth, scarf, poncho, skirt etc etc) they're totally worth the space (Especially since they're outer wear, so throw it around your neck and it doesn't even count as carry on)
Thank you. Lots of sound ideas. Totally agreed of not bringing the eye mask, the travel pillow and the insulated bottle. Occasionally I used the bottle that you suggested as hand-warmer by filling hot water inside.
If you are bringing an iPad or kindle, you can also check out ebooks, including guide books, from the library in advance. I do bring a black pashmina-like shawl that also functions as a blanket, scarf, pillow (in a gallon ziplock bag). Using a Buff as an eye mask is a great idea!
I had to find a place to put my reply, and this appears to be the most relevant. I have travelled nationally and internationally for over 60 years. I’ve used the whole range of transport options, public, air, land and sea, own vehicle, hitchhiking, flying, - what have I left out? There is nothing new under the sun for packing and preparing appropriately for travel that I have not discovered, tried, tested, accepted or rejected. I watch your videos, and others of similar nature, always hoping that there is going to be one magic item or method that will revolutionise my travelling experience; so far, no. So I suppose your videos are useful to people who haven’t had the chance to develop their own methods, people who are relatively inexperienced, or perhaps not clear thinkers. Still, as always, I’m disappointed that you haven’t (yet?) introduced me to that “one magic item…….”
I agree with everything but the travel blanket! I get cold easy and it has saved my life I hotels! I use a blanket scarf so it’s versatile. I also bought a small clear plain toiletry bag, learned that lesson in Spain when they were sticklers about my liquids and made me put it in a ziplock bag but let my husband leave his in his small plain clear case. It’s all I use now even if I don’t travel abroad lol
I never use sleeping mask on the plane. Instead I always wear a good hoodie. When I want to get some sleep and the light borders me, I pull the hood down to cover a half of my face - it gives enough privacy and it is available at any moment if my trip. 💖
I find the souvenirs are cooking classes. I learn a new skill which I can make when I get home. It takes up no space in my backpack and it never rusts or breaks. You never get accustomed to it like a magnet or trinket.
I sometimes pack disposable cloths. On a trip to Peru, we started in Cusco, 9,000 ft elevation. I intentionally packed a rolling duffle with kids winter clothing and gave it to the hotels house keepers. Very appreciated. I left behind my own sweater, next stop the Amazon.
Agree with everything. I have been traveling light for almost 40 years. Only exception I will bring back wine. Even with 3 bottles in my carryon, I still stay under 30 pounds. Unless one is buying a case of wine, it is not cheap to ship wine overseas.
I have all my toiletries in solids, a large thin merino woolen scarf for my blanket, it folds up really flat if I don't want to wear it, and a Trtle neck pillow which fits beautifully in a corner, and I never sleep anywhere without an eye mask. And I have a super lightweight bottle carrier for the bottle of water that I buy at the airport. And a mini painting/drawing set and sketchbook. The freedom of travelling without checked luggage is beautiful.
Passport cover. Granted i just slip my passport into the fold when at the airport etc. But even when traveling the cover protects it, has a place for my vaccine cards and makes it easy to find. I find it worthwhile.
Best travel hack I found is stop buying liquid shampoos and conditioners. The water is heavy and not necessary to travel with, so now I bring ball shampoo and disc conditioners I pack them in a small plastic container that I already owned and wasn’t using.
I don't tend to take shampoo and conditioner in anything other than a travel size.. Its easy to buy in the places I visit and often cheaper.. I just got to a low priced or dollar store and leave in the airbnb for others to use. I will take a small travel size of each just for the first day incase I don't feel like going to the store after my journey
I do the same, and keep refilling with my favorite product. I know the price for the product is much higher ($1.50 for 1 oz of shampoo or $8 for 32 oz of shampoo) but I like to have things labled. I can't see what's shampoo and conditioner when im showering and not wearing my glasses!
I had backpack-only travel all figured out. Then I had a baby. We've only flown domestically since she was born, and my travel strategies rely on stopping at Target once we get where we're going. Give us a few years, and then we can travel lightly as a family again.
I take individual sachets of shampoo, conditioner and mini-soaps gleaned from previous hotel visits. I only take enough for the first few days, as I can pick up more along the way. I restock my stash when I’m travelling by car, and luggage weight is not a consideration.
Another very excellent video! I use as many toiletries that are solid as possible, and I cut them in small pieces so that I don't take the whole thing (like a shampoo bar). I do the same with a laundry soap bar. I'm always trying to get my backpack to be lighter and smaller!
Same here - I cut my shampoo/conditioner bars in half. They fit nicely in empty Altoids tins. I use a Zum bar soap too. My facial cleanser is either a solid bar (Drunk Elephant makes small travel size ones) or powder facial cleanser (Hanalei makes individual packets that will last between three-four cleanings).
I can’t bear anything constricting my head or pressing down on my eyelids so my eye mask is the best. Cupped eye section. Not tight but still does the job. Teattowels make great souvenirs. Light. Not bulky. And cheesy is good for something like that
I've decided that the photos I take are my souvenirs of my trip. I don't buy souvenir gifts for ppl anymore - as a special treat I sometimes send snail mail postcards; but mostly I just email photos. If you explain to ppl that you're traveling carry on only they are usually so amazed they don't expect you to bring back anything
I always buy the travel sized containers of my favorite toiletries. What I do is refill them when I run out. It’s important to keep certain products in the same packaging it comes in depending on the actives in the product so I don’t use those small silicone toiletry bottles.
Another excellent video. I gave up on a travel pillow a long time ago. They didn't work for me and were a pain to carry. I only take a travel size (or two) toothpaste, deodorant, razor, travel shaving cream and toothbrush. I use the hotel soap and shampoo. If for some reason they aren't provided I'll buy it at my destination. That has yet to happen.
I’ve been to too many hotels that run out of shampoo or body wash. The front desk calls housekeeping which takes forever if they come at all. Even in nicer hotels. I will always bring my soap & shampoo bars. Last trip to Atlanta they didn’t even have sheets on one bed. They never came. Finally a worker brought a blanket. No pillow or sheets. This was a nicer hotel too.
I have had to travel domestically for work and I watched several videos before I left. Nearly all of my space is filled up with a CPap sleep apnea device and I have several maintenance medications that I have to get in 3 month’s worth. I’ve been told that it’s ideal to travel with the original container for them. The CPap case is 13x14x5 it holds the device the headset and the power supply and I’ve added a extension cord from experience when staying in hotels. I travel 3 times now for 4 days each time with a carryon wheeler and a 30l pack. I’m still trying to figure out how to get it down further . I’m trying to get a smaller CPap for travel, but I have to work through the doctor to get a script for it and I have to save up for it as insurance doesn’t cover the second one. Have you looked at stuff like that? Thank you for all your videos as you two where a big help in getting ready for these trips.
I found the small travel size cpap is well worth the money. The space, weight they save is amazing. Plus you dont have to deal with water since they have a humedic filter to help with the moisture. And the choed and tube are long enouhj to work in hotel rooms.
Ask your pharmacy for labels and smaller bottles for your meds. Most are very accommodating and that saves a lot of space. Also, the CPAP case isn’t supposed to count against your carry-on and personal item allowance. While they are very expensive, I finally got the travel CPAP and it has been worth every cent I paid. I did luck out on a sale last December that reduced it a little.
I am aware that it didn’t count against me, but don’t like to keep track of a lot of things, so I pack it in the wheeler, Thank you for the suggestion for the medication bottles.
I use the Z2 c/bipartisan. It is the size of your hand! Self humidifying, ac/dc powered. Well worth the $. Regarding the prescription - you only ever need one. Ask your doctor for a digital copy to keep yourself .
@@deniceking3454 Unfortunately outside the US where there are specific laws around it, CPAP not counting towards your carry on allowance isn't universal.
I agree with all your items except the checked bag. It’s all fine and dandy not to travel with checked luggage when going on an island vacation but how do you travel with only 7kg (that’s including the weight of the bag) for a 6 week vacation? 7kg is our carry on limit. We use our plastic liquids bag as our toiletries bag to cut down on weight too.
That is our issue also. Getting there from overseas there isn't usually a kg limit for the carry on BUT the flights I take within Europe or whatever country I am in definitely does have a limit on their carry ons. And it is usually 7kg as you said. Like you said that includes the weight of the bag so how in the world do I pack everything when I only have 3-4kg to work with. (meds, camera, shoes, all the clothes I will need etc. And we pack the minimum and wash clothes and stuff.) So we always end up checking one bag between us. It is not that big but that way it takes care of what we can't fit in our carry ons because of weight restrictions.
I did a 6 week trip over Christmas in Canada carry on only (and yes, the whole 7k limit etc). The first rule: leave the laptop at home. 2nd rule: leave the tablet/iPad at home. 3rd rule minimise your tech (yeah, you're not gonna be able to bring your video camera or slr, much less, audio equipment). 4th rule: minimise your liquids (liquids are heavy) - look at dry shampoos, soaps, deodorants, moisturiser etc. 5th rule: think about your wardrobe in creative ways and TRY to take only 1pr of shoes (which you'll wear on the plane; personally I wore snow boots on the plane/s - several flights, international+domestic - and packed a pair of foldable ballet flats)
Unless you plan to not wash anything and so bring 6 weeks of clothes, then you'll wash them at some point, so bring a week or less and wash. Ive done that recently for 3 and 4 week vacations., took a weeks worth and washed. So 6 weeks would make no difference to that. Also avoids all the issues that come when your luggage is delayed especially if you are moving from place to place. To lower weight i take no toiletries, they are either at my destination in the accommodation, or the local shops.
@@susie9893 Wow Kudos to you. There is no way I could go to Canada with just carry on. I am not prepared to wear my ski gear on the plane and really would not want to hire my ski boots. Especially when I would be leaving home in the heat.
@@Joe-lb8qn Clothes are not the issue if you are going somewhere warm. It is more the tech, medication etc like what one of the previous replies said. You need to leave everything other than clothes at home. I did it for a 3 month trip to Cuba and Central America about 10 years ago prior to having a good camera and iPad, noise canceling headphones etc. Also some people have sensitive skin and can’t use regular toiletries so need to pack their own that may not be available in foreign countries.
The trtl neck pillow is a sleeper hack.... In more ways than one It has a secret feature. The plastic's memory allows it to go nearly flat. Don't be afraid to flatten it out a bit in your bag, it will always go back into shape. But to be honest I tend to use my rab synthetic down jacket (packs into its own pocket) and put that into my buff around my neck. And believe it or not...i put my flare earplugs in then pull up my buff over my eyes and ears. Yes I look insane but it couldn't care less 😂 it screams "leave me alone"
I agree with not having the huge toiletry bag and neck pillow. But I will never give up my checked bag. I tried 2 weeks on a tour in Europe - and ended up needing to get another suitcase because of the stuff I bought. Lesson learned, I will always have a checked bag. The travel size toiletries also a big agree! The only thing we will bring is toothpaste. I need my toothpaste for sensitive teeth. What I like to do is bring samples. I get samples of moisturizer, serum, perfume, etc. As I use it, I toss it and I have less to bring home.
We do carry on only with a personal item. And I bring most of that stuff. Mask, I use on plane and in the hotel. Blanket, on plane plus I put it on my pillow on hotel pillows or on my legs. I bring a water bottle, the Super Sparrow, a light weight steel thermos that's not too big. Fits in my tote side pocket. Also I've got a super small neck pillow, more like a collar that takes less room. NOKNOD . Fits in my tote. I realize my traveling style is different from yours. We don't backpack everywhere. We don't take shampoos or lotions or bulky brushes
There's also fillable neck pillows. They're basically a tube that you stuff with booths you were going to pack anyway. Then at you destination you unpack it and stuff it away
as a frequent traveler I agree with most of these! I will GATE check my luggage in a heartbeat (my husband refuses LOL) but it's super rare for me to intentionally pack in a bag that HAS to be checked. I do keep a compression bag of a few items of essential clothing in my personal item bag in case of lost luggage (in case of a connecting flight or some other random mishap with a gate checked bag). I dress in layers, including (even in summer because I am ALWAYS cold) a cardigan style chunky knit sweater that is large enough that I can kind of wrap around me and it even covers up my legs enough to work as a quasi blanket, Ive bundled it up and used it as a pillow (I almost always get a window seat so I can lean against it). Some things I ALWAYS have in my personal item bag (which this video isnt about but I thought I'd mention).... zipties (just a few), carbiner clips, and a couple of bungee cords of different sizes. small, light, don't take up any space, and have all come in handy more times than I can recall! Oh, I DO bring my stainless steel cup but its not quite as large as your stanley. I pour all my drinks in it. And in the case of turbulence or a jerked knee- or careless neighbor-it doesnt spill on me.... or anyone else. ;) (though this can be accomplished by lighter cups also with a lid, but I prefer my cup. We all make our choices as to whats important to us lol)
As far as the airline blankets, I saw a video about how they are cleaned and sterilized and packaged. So, if the video is to be believed, then those blankets are probably as clean as a new one from a store.
instead of ginger chews another great product is Activated Charcoal, It deal with gas, bloating etc, as well as any issues with diarrhoea... just in case. I've used it for years and it works great.
Thank you for letting me know about Goodr sunglasses. They are relatively inexpensive and really great quality. They’re comfortable and the lenses are quite high end. Thanks again.
Goodr sunglasses do NOT work at the beach. The sand/sunscreen rubbed off the protective layer. I’m willing to spend a little more for sunglasses that protect my eyes.
Just got back from 3 weeks in NZ and didn’t pack shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or hair dryer. I was banking on every hotel providing these and they did. I took and didn’t need moisturizer/ lotion as his was also at every hotel.
To be honest, I find not checking a bag and dragging a suitcase behind me, as well as carrying a backpack to be far more stressful. I used to travel carry-on only and it just added a layer of complication for me that made travel so much more anxiety-inducing. I'll take the risk and check a bag. However, I'm visually disabled, so for me it's one more thing I have to worry about the whole time, or make the airport assistant worry about. But as much as it sucks to not see well in situations like travel, it also means I do tend to get through security and customs a bit faster because there's a staff member guiding me and they're very helpful, great people. I also have to be pre-boarded so the flight attendant can physically lead me to my seat and help me get settled, they're also great people.
Likewise. I tried a lot of masks, but everything that doesn't completely block light or anything that touches my eyelashes is a no go, I can't sleep. With my current eye mask I sleep like a baby
I love the idea of no checked luggage and often pack a single carry on BUT I am 4’11 and can’t stow my own luggage. It really sucks because I not only have to pay for a checked bag, but risk lost luggage. I have gate checked, but that can be an iffy situation depending on the airlines and have been sent back to check my luggage at the last minute
I’m 75 with grey hair. Someone almost always offers to lift my bag for me. On the other hand I have offered to lift bags for short people my whole life, including men. I do ask people if they would like my help.
I'm not a guy but speaking from what I've heard guys I know who travel light say (and do): grow a beard for the trip, buy disposable razors as you go, consider an electric razor ONLY if you plan to be gone several months at least AND plan to buzz cut your hair as well (gotta justify the space and weight in your bag)
Love it! Better for the environment also. I just subscribed because usually influencers are just trying to sell us more stuff. Another tip, since I’m taking my iPad anyway, I use the Kindle app on it to read. I watch movies on it too 😁 Instead of toiletry bags I’ll take hefty freezer baggies. They’re water proof and don’t take up space
I would agree on the eye mask if you don’t fly much. But when you do one or more multi thousand mile flights a week for 30 weeks a year you learn that anything you can do relax on a flight is worth it. An eye mask can help and takes less space than a couple credit cards. And a well made one will keep it off your eyelids unlike a buff. But pillows and bulky blankets should leave behind unless you are on a longer flight. Sometimes those 10+ hour flight are much better with a gravel blanket. And for toiletries get the reusable toothpaste tubes from matador. The small gets you 3 weeks of toothpaste and the large is a couple weeks of shaving cream.
I use the eye mask not only on the plane but also in the hotel to sleep! I have invested in a nice one with deep eye wells. I have natural long eyelashes so that is a priority
@@thetravelcoaches They work great. They are wraparound lenses (safety glasses) so I don't get glare in from the sides. Also blocks wind from the sides. Polycarbonate lenses that do scratch kind of easily, but at $4 each, I don't really care.
Thanks a lot for the video. I never used/needed an eye mask, but I love my neck pillow. 😉 I don't need any liquid bottles because I take a soap bar for hair and body and tooth tablets instead of paste. The only liquid I take is my small deodorant. The problem with travelling only with carry-on is the weight limit of the airlines. Cathay Pacific - for example - allows only 7kg for carry-on, including personal item and - I can't pack for 2 months in 7kg....... The idea of lightweight luggage is wonderful. But here in Germany the lightest I found has 1.4kg..... und that is to much having only 7kg for all.
I love my goodr sunnies but my pair has broken twice in the same place (at a moving joint). I replaced them and the same style broke in the same place. So I don't thinkt they have great quality.
$9 sunglasses will not have good polarization. I don’t buy sunglasses without it. Protecting my eyes and eliminating getting a headache from squinting is worth the cost.
There are much cheaper quality options out there - just keep an eye out for sales, terminated lines, factory outlets etc. As long as you know the specs you need to look for you'll find it sooner or later at a price you're prepared to pay
Regarding toiletry, if you are travelling in Europe and sleeping at a half decent Hotel they will have toothbrush and toothpaste for free when asked for in the reception, shampoo will be in you room already. Your only have to bring a comb as a male. Ladies has to bring some more stuff but not much more than make up and tampons
I do want to play around with a water purifier! Would love to find a super small one. Let me know if you have any recommendations? Thanks for watching Gunnar!❤️
I've brought the Katadyn BeFree to places like Nepal and Colombia. Collapsible and space saving and I've filled it with both sketchy tap water and river water.
Can't agree more with the sunglasses. I lost my Dior sunglasses on my Las Vegas trip. After that, I only bring cheap ones. Thanks for all the great tips.
Already doing a lot of these things...but it's time to buy a new suitcase! I know you favor the hard kind, but I'm curious about any insights on soft sided carry-on. Four wheels or two? (I'm thinking four...) Expandable or not? (I'm thinking expandable but ny logical side is telling me that could be problematic.) I'm interested in your thoughts!
Backpack hon. Backpack. Seriously, you are far less likely to be forced to weigh it if you do a backpack. And you don't have issues with stairs when no elevator is available (much of Europe and Asia)
Carry on only can be more difficult in SE Asia and Oceania where not only are you restricted on the size of your carry on, you are also limited by weight. Usually 7kg, sometimes that's total (your carry on plus personal item), sometimes it's 7kg plus personal item, occasionally it may be up to 10kg. And they can and do weigh it! We've seen people having to dispose of things from their carry on or pay exhorbitant gate check in fees in Australia, Thailand and Malaysia.
Speaking as an Aussie I'd like to add that it's usually easier than you think cos the heat makes it unnecessary to pack a lot. Sarah Murdoch made an interesting video about traveling personal item only to Thailand. Recommend
Also an Aussie... I've done carry on only for long weekends away in SE Asia, but for longer trips when you add the DSLR camera and accoutrements, video camera etc. 7kg can be tight! Travelling from Perth we often use low cost carriers, in which case the allowance is 7kg total (carry on plus personal item weights are combined) - even some of the full service airlines now consider it a combined weight (e.g. Malaysian Airlines). Also, as soon as you have any essential equipment (e.g. CPAP machine) it becomes even more difficult.
@@LeesreeNSubbi well my cousin travels in Asia all the time and he says his cpap never counts as carry on. And I don't carry all that camera gear etc anymore. My phone camera is pretty good and I'm not a professional photographer so I tell myself I can't justify all that extra. I'm pretty happy with the tech system I came up with for my last trip away. Worked very well and I regretted nothing (except I probably need to get a smaller powerbank - mine's pretty heavy duty + a little old school now - wireless charging option would be great)
@@susie9893 It can be pretty hit and miss on the CPAP. They're definitely exempt if travelling to and from the USA as there are rules that essentially say medical equipment cannot be counted towards carry on. AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Jetstar and Scoot all advise the CPAP machine is included in baggage allowance for SE Asia flights, though there are reports out there that it's not always enforced. Essentially though, the same ease of travelling carry-on only doesn't apply in this region because your allowance is weight limited (generally somewhere around 7kg or 10kg) whereas in the USA the restriction relates to the size of the carry-on but not the weight.
for must have toiletry bottles, i've switched to carrying actual hotel bottles. They are super small which is still more than enough. The best ones have screw tops for filling and a snap off cover for dispensing. For toothpaste, i have an actual store bought travel tube but when it runs down, I fill it back up with a full size tube. I can't stand cheap sunglasses. The lenses are not optically clear, the polarizing layer doesn't work, and they don't have the comfort features (spring hinge, adjustable nosepads/frames, etc) To date, I have lost only 1 pair of prescription glasses and no sunglasses.
Instead of a neck pillow, I use a velcro neck brace ( like you have whiplash) from the drugstore. Much smaller to pack and it supports your neck for napping and sleeping.
Here's what takes up space for me: Medicines and glasses. Because I have a vision issue, I have to have aboaut 4-5 different glasses. Contact lens cleaners and solutions. I could do foldable reading glasses but that's it. I'm close to carry on only.
Yes, ppl who travel with chronic illness really face a challenge. Have you watched DN Danie? She talks a lot about traveling light when you have a chronic illness
Not giving up my insulated bottle! If my water isn’t cold, I won’t drink it. It fits in my backpack pocket so I’ll deal with the weight. Rest of the tips are great.
I have the opposite perspective. If I'm travelling somewhere warm I don't care and will carry a collapsible 1 but if I'm heading into severe cold that's where my thermal waterbottle is worth its weight imo - will keep me warm for hours cos I make up hot herbal tea in it at the start of the day and sip it throughout the day
I agree with most of your list. However, my eye mask with curved eye cups always comes with me. I find a buff to be tight, hot, and it doesn't really block out the light. The one I have blocks everything and is super comfortable. To go with the theme of the video, I'd say don't waste money on most travel specific shirts. These usually have fancy pockets, vents, and are polyester/nylon based. You usually stand out as a tourist, and they are often very hot given the man made fibers. I have several that I no longer wear. I'd rather invest that money in good wool products.
You ever think you are just forgetful about your sunglasses. My sunglasses are prescription, so please don't think that all people can use the cheap sunglasses.
Yes but I also think there's a difference between "I'd better be careful with these cos they cost a s**tload of cash" and "I have to be careful with these or I'm f**d".
I carry minimal makeup (concealer, mascara, stick eyeshadow and eyeliner, lipstick - could all fit in a snack size ziplock bag) and wear “costume” jewelry. No need to risk losing the “good stuff.” And souvenirs have to be flat or tiny.
For the sunglasses, make sure they are actually safe for your eyes. Here I have prescription ones, so I must disagree with you on this point. Otherwise, love you videos and find them helpfull for my upcoming trips! :) Thanks
Happily transitions come with uv protection now so I just do that and take a cap for bright sun days. Yes that's still prescription but I'm only paying for 1pr instead of 2
I but my prescription specs and sunglasses from Zeelool. I get my prescription with pd from my optometrist, virtually try on specs on Zeelool's website and pay next to nothing for frames I ADORE. And they're cheap to replace if need be.
This is spot on! The only things I am not willing to sacrifice is the book and the water bottle 😂! But everything yes 💯! I always just do carry-on unless I am going home (Puerto Rico) because I know, I am coming back loaded with goodies and it is a direct flight. However, I made an exception when I went to Vietnam , April 2023 everything carry-on as usual BUT with an almost empty check-in bag (18 pounds out of the max 50) it was candy and toiletries we were planing to drop off at an orphanage and with the plan to bring it back with goodies for friends that have not visited their country in a while. Well shame on me for NOT doing my research they weighed mine and my husband’s carry-on! The lady at the counter (Eva Airline) said you will have to check it in is too heavy (mine was 21 husband was 24) I panicked because we each had EVERYTHING in our carry-on. What save us was, that almost empty check-in bag that I NEVER check-in for international trips! We took some items out from the carry-on to the check in bag it what a relief it was to keep our carry-on. Our layover was in Taiwan (12 hours) so we got our check-in bag went for a short stroll in Taipei came back to the airport early (3rd person in line for check-in) and bang both carry-ons were taken way from us, because again they said it was to heavy (VietJet Air) they took our carry-on right off the bat no chance to dump more on the check in luggage that was still under weight. Also when in Vietnam we took 3 domestic flights, in all 3 domestic flights they took our carry-on and the flights were literally EMPTY 😂! No luggage was lost for or delay but it was nerve racking and a lesson learn on my end. Do my research 🧐!
All great ideas. But light travel takes on a whole extra difficult layer if you are a large person. My clothes are larger. They take up more room. I can't find fancy packable coats in my size. Frustrating.
Keep looking. That stuff is out there. I'm an Aussie and I found suitable stuff in plus size. And I just did a 6 week trip to Canada over Christmas, carry on only. It's doable. Don't make excuses, just make it happen. If you make up your mind to it you'll make it work
I absolutely will always check bags it's just not that serious for me I'd rather be comfortable and I put an air tag in my checked bag so that I know where it's at and I'm good to go the pillow is a necessity but not the blanket so I'm actually thinking about not traveling with my blanket
I stopped carrying a travel umbrella/ too much bulk and weight, even with the small collapsible ones. Usually your destination will have loaners if needed. I just got back from Ecuador, the rainforest, galapagos, and guayaquil . They had umbrellas for us to use in the rooms. I also use travel size collapsible brush and comb instead of my full sized ones. a couple of cheap pens are good to have in your pack along with the passport for filling out customs and immigration forms; they rarely provide them for you in the flight or at the airport. I often throw away undies or socks if they're cheap and i've worn them in order to lighten up . Packing cubes are Great! use one of them for just toiletries/liquids for less fuss in certain airports even with TSA precheck they are sticklers in Bogata about no liquids you bought in the airport on the plane.
On umbrellas, that's great if you know you're going to be supplied with 1 at your accommodation. My rule of thumb is, if I know I'm likely to encounter torrential rain and it's a city destination (vs hiking in the wilderness) I'll take a small collapsible umbrella. Otherwise I'll just take a few of those disposable rain ponchos (or just 1 if rain is unlikely). Totally agree about collapsible hairbrush and I recently discovered (for short trips) a silicone sleeve with bristles that you slip on your finger and brush teeth with. Works surprisingly well
@@susie9893 Good info, depending on your travel company and whether it's a "must -do" timed thing such as if you are on a cruise and the guide must take you at a certain time even though it's a typhoon Most land-based tour groups will readjust timing if it's raining because with eight-12 people, they need to shout louder to walk around, explain, and make sure everyone's happy enough to tip. If everyone has an umbrella, they can't bunch in as closely to hear, understand, respond, and get back to the bus on time. Also about the silicone sleeve thing for the hair, it really depends on your own hair situation; I have long thick hair and a little silicone thing that I could brush my teeth with would be a No Go for my hair I think trying the products out yourself before the trip is a good idea, whilst keeping in mind what could easily be purchased at any destination. You're not going to the moon; at most, it's just another country on our planet.
@@gigi9301 um, the little silicone sleeve brush is strictly a toothbrush. And I wouldn't really know about cruising and tours etc - that's not how I travel
I am going on an international trip for 2 weeks using only a person item (18 liter backpack) My biggest concern is my heavy winter coat. My time will be spent in a large city.
Wear the coat (and as much gear as you can) on the flight. Also, technically outerwear doesn't count as carry on - I've turned up to flights carrying my coats + big blanket scarf in 1 of those cloth shopping bags and not even been questioned [but other times I've felt like I should pile it on before I get to the gate - but once you're on the plane you can strip it all off if you need to]. Also, umbrella + waterbottle don't count as carry on so you can attach these to the outer of your bag. And many airlines won't count a small bag (sling) you wear close to your body containing valuables (but if you feel it might be an issue just cover it with your coat)
If you travel through Europe you will not be allowed to take those huge bags into the cabin. I am amazed how much Americans take onboard in cabin baggage. It delays getting on the plane and deplaning!
You refusing to mention that most all foreign brand airlines limit of each bag weight is only 7kg, 15 lbs. So your packing carry-on is crap. I worked for years as an A&P aircraft mechanic and rarely are the fresh water tanks sanitized and bacteria grows in them. On long flights you must drink a half liter per hour as the air in the cabin is dryer than any desert, also additionally it helps curb jetlag. Do drink alcohol as it increases jetlag. I started using 2, 1 liter you use backpacking I have multi pocket jacket for when going through TSA as I put all loose idems in it so it scattered in the tray. Also I wear in layers then jacket over. Most my flights is to the Philippines. If destination is cold then I take a puffy coat. Rarely go to the EU especially now they have new rules for Americans. I leave my shoes untied so easy off and on 😮 dark socks, on long flights using compression socks. Women should not hose and shorts or short skirts, in case of an emergency and the slides used they will melt and bare skin will be friction burned. I am 6ft 200# and packing can be an issue in carry-on. I use the 3-1-1 liquids. I have Mono check hard side bag and a mate to as carry-on my wife likes. My carry-on is a Osprey farpoint 40 which great. Roller are heavier and makes the bigger. Usually I have just my carry-on and personal item. For reading I quit the kindle as it does work anymore without Wi-Fi so I installed kindle app on the tablet on. Do carry the laptop. Just more weight. Check the carry-on weights. I refuse to use the USA branded airlines as too many drunk pot smokers causing problems. Wished they would ban alcohol at airports and on flights. If alcohol to fly stay home.
I don't take any liquids or toiletries. I will buy them at a grocery store at my destination. My hotel always has shampoo and soap. One time my toiletries went through extra screening which delayed me at security.
This works fine if you're only doing an incoming and outgoing flight. But if you're doing international flights with several domestic flights in between it don't work so great
Disagree regards eyemask as important for both use on plane and for hotel room at night. Means can leave bathroom light on and not bothered by tv or smoke alarm lights.
Let me know what travel products you stopped buying???

I agree with all except the eye mask lol. Ya’ll need to do some pushups and increase your organizational skills if you think an eye mask is too bulky or you lose it easily in your pack.
Agree 😆😆😆
Thanks so much for sharing❤️
hey Shelley, very exciting plans. Let us know how the equipment list worked out. 😊
Sounds good but I wear size 22-24 and carry 15+ meds some are refrigerated, medical appliances, so I'm driving
I have heard great things about the matador soap bag! I will have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing❤️
Love the Matador soap bag! Also a total game changer for me :)!
Thanks for the great idea!
Thanks for sharing❤️
Inflatable neck pillow with a soft fleece case. I flew 24500 miles last year. Pillow, eyemask, pad, and noise canceling ear buds made the difference on 15+ hour flights!
Great idea! Do you have an inflatable brand that doesn't stick out too far in the back... pushing you away from the seat?
@snowbike8032 the nice thing about being inflatable is that you can adjust that by how much air you add.
For women a sarong in summer and a big scarf in winter doubles up as a blanket or pillow, great on cold planes, trains and buses
Totally agree. This was going to be 1 of my comments. And given that these items have SO many other uses (towel, picnic blanket, table cloth, scarf, poncho, skirt etc etc) they're totally worth the space (Especially since they're outer wear, so throw it around your neck and it doesn't even count as carry on)
Checking luggage is way less stressful for me and also nice cuz I go 6 weeks or longer plus donating stuff!
Thank you. Lots of sound ideas. Totally agreed of not bringing the eye mask, the travel pillow and the insulated bottle. Occasionally I used the bottle that you suggested as hand-warmer by filling hot water inside.
You are so welcome! Also that is a great idea for the hand warmer, thanks for sharing❤️
I don't really lose my sunglasses but I got a pair of thinoptics and they're one of the best purchases I ever made.
That’s what I do. I use Libby and download a couple of books right before we leave.
Man you were spot on with those items, I took a number of them from this list and they never got used. Minimal is the key.
Glad the video was helpful! Thanks for watching❤️
@@thetravelcoaches anytime! Your goodr sunglasses recco were a game changer!
I no longer have a passport cover, but I do keep it in a zip up document pouch that has a wrist strap. Much easier than a cover
Thanks for sharing!
I keep mine in a zip-loc sandwich bag…
Thanks for sharing! Everyone can use a good bottle of wine! ❤️
I find it worthwhile.
thanks for sharing your experience! ❤️
also, if they're rfid protected, even better
I'm team passport cover too. I find them very useful
Best travel hack I found is stop buying liquid shampoos and conditioners. The water is heavy and not necessary to travel with, so now I bring ball shampoo and disc conditioners I pack them in a small plastic container that I already owned and wasn’t using.
Love it!
Great advice, thanks for sharing ❤️
I do the same, and keep refilling with my favorite product. I know the price for the product is much higher ($1.50 for 1 oz of shampoo or $8 for 32 oz of shampoo) but I like to have things labled. I can't see what's shampoo and conditioner when im showering and not wearing my glasses!
I had backpack-only travel all figured out. Then I had a baby. We've only flown domestically since she was born, and my travel strategies rely on stopping at Target once we get where we're going. Give us a few years, and then we can travel lightly as a family again.
Lol
I take individual sachets of shampoo, conditioner and mini-soaps gleaned from previous hotel visits. I only take enough for the first few days, as I can pick up more along the way. I restock my stash when I’m travelling by car, and luggage weight is not a consideration.
Another very excellent video! I use as many toiletries that are solid as possible, and I cut them in small pieces so that I don't take the whole thing (like a shampoo bar). I do the same with a laundry soap bar. I'm always trying to get my backpack to be lighter and smaller!
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing! Appreciate you watching our videos ❤️
I did the same thing on my last trip to Italy. It worked out great!
Light. Not bulky. And cheesy is good for something like that
Thanks for sharing❤️
That has yet to happen.
that is pretty much exactly what Meg and I do! Thanks for sharing ❤️
I dont spend money on starbucks/food. I applied for a travel credit card and now go to the lounge.
Hmm, 1 way or another you're still paying for that food. But if you can leverage all the benefits of your credit card it pays off
I have had to travel domestically for work and I watched several videos before I left.
In more ways than one
It has a secret feature.
Hey what ever works! haha. Thanks so much for sharing and watching! ❤️
I'm guessing you've never heard the "leave only footprints, take only photos" rule huh?
@@susie9893Heard it...don't believe in it, thanks. Plus, I don't steal anything, I am buying things and helping their economies. You do you.
I just use zip lock baggies for my toiletries.
I still use one clear 1 quart bag for my toiletries so that TSA passes my carry on bag through without issue.
That is also great for saving weight! Thanks for sharing❤️
These days, my favorite souvenirs are my photos. Thanks for a great video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching ❤️
as a frequent traveler I agree with most of these!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching❤️
I love my eye mask. I use it every night and will definitely bring it with me when I travel.
I am short, too. I have gone with an under the seat bag, using compression cubes and have been able to pack for 4 days in a 25 litre sized bag.
I’m 75 with grey hair. Someone almost always offers to lift my bag for me. On the other hand I have offered to lift bags for short people my whole life, including men. I do ask people if they would like my help.
I have this problem too. Also problem with some airlines having weight limits for hand luggage
Carry on only, only works if you plan on coming bk
Hi, what about razor, I like to shave, what do you use when travel with carri on or just a backpack?
Thanks so much for sharing! Appreciate you watching our video❤️
Great video. I'm traveling to Spain and I will use some of your ideas. By the way, what kind of shirt are you wearing on this video. Thanks.
An eyemask doesnt take much space and doesnt cost that much. I still take it for travels coz it helps me get some sleep.
I use tinted safety glasses for sungiasses. I buy them in bulk from Amazon for a few dollars each. I probably go through a pair every six months.
Wow that is a gem of a secret! Do they work well?? Thanks for watching ❤️
Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Hey hon, you realise there are some great natural dry deodorants out there now
I love my goodr sunnies but my pair has broken twice in the same place (at a moving joint). I replaced them and the same style broke in the same place. So I don't thinkt they have great quality.
$9 sunglasses will not have good polarization. I don’t buy sunglasses without it. Protecting my eyes and eliminating getting a headache from squinting is worth the cost.
The nano-puff jacket is definitely a good one, but prices a ton of people out at $240
There are much cheaper quality options out there - just keep an eye out for sales, terminated lines, factory outlets etc.
Thanks for sharing! Appreciate you watching our video❤️
Have you explored with a water purifier? Would be curious to know what you think about the packing size or bottle needed for it
I do want to play around with a water purifier! Would love to find a super small one. Let me know if you have any recommendations? Thanks for watching Gunnar!❤️
I've brought the Katadyn BeFree to places like Nepal and Colombia. Collapsible and space saving and I've filled it with both sketchy tap water and river water.
@@thetravelcoacheswhen i was in vietnam i saw a good number of tourists with life straw brand water bottles!
I use a Grayl water bottle whenever I go to the Philippines and never had any trouble. And most importantly, I never got sick.
Life straws are great
Can't agree more with the sunglasses. I lost my Dior sunglasses on my Las Vegas trip. After that, I only bring cheap ones. Thanks for all the great tips.
You are welcome! It is so frustrating to break nice sunglasses! thanks for watching ❤️
That is a great point! thanks for sharing ❤️
I have heard of a lot of other people doing the neck brace things as well! thanks for sharing❤️
Interesting. I might try that out and see if I can sleep upright with that on (unlikely, knowing me, but worth a shot)
Cheap sunglasses yes, but they often have no UV protection which makes them useless, so check before buying.
Here's what takes up space for me:
Medicines and glasses.
Because I have a vision issue, I have to have aboaut 4-5 different glasses. Contact lens cleaners and solutions. I could do foldable reading glasses but that's it.
I'm close to carry on only.
thanks for watching and thanks for sharing❤️
Yes, ppl who travel with chronic illness really face a challenge. Have you watched DN Danie? She talks a lot about traveling light when you have a chronic illness
Not giving up my insulated bottle! If my water isn’t cold, I won’t drink it. It fits in my backpack pocket so I’ll deal with the weight. Rest of the tips are great.
I have the opposite perspective. If I'm travelling somewhere warm I don't care and will carry a collapsible 1 but if I'm heading into severe cold that's where my thermal waterbottle is worth its weight imo - will keep me warm for hours cos I make up hot herbal tea in it at the start of the day and sip it throughout the day
Re. Books: almost all local libraries will "loan" you books on your Kindle. You can even download them at home from your computer!
I like the idea of using a buff instead of eye shields or sleep masks.
Toss the over ear noise canceling headphones. Laptop. Clamshell suitcase (only top open). Pillow.
But backpack only
Good info.
also…Holiday lights are a nice addition. 😊
What shirt are you wearing? Looks comfortable and soft.
My sunglasses are prescription, so please don't think that all people can use the cheap sunglasses.
that is a great point thanks for sharing❤️
Yes but I also think there's a difference between "I'd better be careful with these cos they cost a s**tload of cash" and "I have to be careful with these or I'm f**d".
A steer cover for passport works well to protect your passport. Super cheap and they never take it off.
I carry minimal makeup (concealer, mascara, stick eyeshadow and eyeliner, lipstick - could all fit in a snack size ziplock bag) and wear “costume” jewelry. No need to risk losing the “good stuff.” And souvenirs have to be flat or tiny.
Totally agree with you! thanks for watching❤️
What if you want to pack a 200ml clothes sanitiser spray (Savlon)? You have to check in
Decant into a smaller spray bottle. I did exactly that on my last trip
For the sunglasses, make sure they are actually safe for your eyes. Here I have prescription ones, so I must disagree with you on this point.
Otherwise, love you videos and find them helpfull for my upcoming trips! :)
Thanks
Happily transitions come with uv protection now so I just do that and take a cap for bright sun days. Yes that's still prescription but I'm only paying for 1pr instead of 2
I but my prescription specs and sunglasses from Zeelool. I get my prescription with pd from my optometrist, virtually try on specs on Zeelool's website and pay next to nothing for frames I ADORE. And they're cheap to replace if need be.
Your sunglasses look great! I did the same as you for years! No more. Thanks for reminding me.
Another option is factory outlets or warehouses for cheap but cool looking uv sunnies
@@susie9893 Thanks!!!!
If you make up your mind to it you'll make it work
You don't have to take them out of the cover. I never had to. They just open and look at the passport name and photo.
I agree that a passport cover is annoying. But I’m not so sure that it’s SUPER annoying.
I absolutely will always check bags it's just not that serious for me I'd rather be comfortable and I put an air tag in my checked bag so that I know where it's at and I'm good to go the pillow is a necessity but not the blanket so I'm actually thinking about not traveling with my blanket
I can't physically lift a carry on luggage up over my head. So I always have to check a case. 😢
And the hilarious thing is they think they're traveling light. You should see how much they take when not restricted by airlines 🤦♀️
So I stopped packing shampoo and shaving cream... I just use a small bar of soap for all of it.
I always have a big checked bag!
Trtl neck pillow is a game changer and yes those blankets are gross
You refusing to mention that most all foreign brand airlines limit of each bag weight is only 7kg, 15 lbs. So your packing carry-on is crap. I worked for years as an A&P aircraft mechanic and rarely are the fresh water tanks sanitized and bacteria grows in them. On long flights you must drink a half liter per hour as the air in the cabin is dryer than any desert, also additionally it helps curb jetlag. Do drink alcohol as it increases jetlag. I started using 2, 1 liter you use backpacking
I have multi pocket jacket for when going through TSA as I put all loose idems in it so it scattered in the tray.
I recently found your channel and this helped so much because soon I have a flight
That is great to hear!! ❤️ thanks for watching our videos!
I don't take any liquids or toiletries. I will buy them at a grocery store at my destination. My hotel always has shampoo and soap. One time my toiletries went through extra screening which delayed me at security.
This works fine if you're only doing an incoming and outgoing flight. But if you're doing international flights with several domestic flights in between it don't work so great
I use natural handmade toiletries I’m the picky guy
Disagree regards eyemask as important for both use on plane and for hotel room at night. Means can leave bathroom light on and not bothered by tv or smoke alarm lights.
