The lost Japanese jet project : J4M2 Senden

- The last years of the Second World war were the advent of jet engines. A new kind of propulsion means new type of aircraft. So, the engineers of the various factions of the conflict had to make radically new designs for these innovating aircraft. In the Pacific, having received many pictures of Germany's BMW 003 engine, jet propulsion has been developed and Japan was able to build its jet fighter. But an idea came to the mind of the Japanese, instead of having to start form zero the conception of jets, the engineers could simply take the pusher planes projects to adapt these in order to remplace their former propeller engine by a jet one. Among the candidate to house a such engine was an interceptor project made by Mitsubishi, the Senden (Flashing lightning).

Looks like a DH Vampire (or Venom).
Indeed, this plane is very similar these British planes and later, the Sea Vampire will enter into the JSDF.
Thought that instantly!
Several Japanese aircraft were discovered hidden behind a false wall during a renovation. One was made to flying status and used in a Japanese movie. The other two were used as props as I recall reading. The movie may have been called. "They died for you." A story about Kamikazi pilots.
Very interesting fact
Outstanding video this completes some of my knowledge. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Thanks 😀
Many of the images shown are actually of the Manshu Ki98 project, which was similar in layout to the Mitsubishi Senden.
A rear mounted pusher engine with counter rotating props on a twin boom is where its at....only the british griffin engine could do a counter rotating prop in ww2 ...until turbines came around.....
I love the shape of this plane...looks like a Dehavolin Vampire
Me too I love it, the design of this plane is a bit futuristic for its time.
Very advanced, super cool looking plane, much like the British Vampire, if it had entered service it probably would have been formidable fighter.
Indeed, Japanese had a special elegance.
i though it looked like the vampire as well
it would have suffered the same fate as the MS 262 project. lack of exotic metals to make engines dependable. Japan had to import nearly all raw materials, and the transportation of these goods were virtually stopped.
kinda crazy how much the senden looks like a DH Vampire
Yes it is an interesting coincidence.
That jet intake would have ingested mostly the boundary layer of the fuselage. They'd have ben in for a rude awakening regarding such concepts.
Maybe, no prototypes were built so they could not make any experimentation of the jet.
@@F-14DTomcat Yep. It's something that had to be learned by (bad) experience. Splitter plates / diverter slots are something that appears early on in jet intake designs. The P-59 Airacomet already had them. (Designs with nose intakes and engine nacelles did not need them.)
@@HotelPapa100 Very interesting, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Did anyone else think straight away: "Thunderbird 2"?
I didn't know about that fictional aircraft, indeed it looks a bit like this one. But I would say that the Thunderbird 2 reminds me more the Planet express of Futurama.
I didn't right away, but as soon as I saw your comment, "Oh yeah!!!"
Amazing photographs of these designs!!! Wow!
Thanks :)
Just found your channel. Good content. Good luck
Thanks :)
Very interesting
Glad you enjoyed it
Interesting video
Thanks :)
The engine reminds me of the BMW radial of WW2 used in the FW190s'
Yes, indeed it has a special ressemblance with the Ha-43-41, it can be the German influence of Japanese technology.
Looks Amazingly Like a DH Vampire.
Exactly what I thought when making the video!
My Grandad Ex RAF and later a 3Star General in the IAF flew and ferried the DHVampire in 1950 from the U.K to India .@@F-14DTomcat
@@nikhildeshmukh3709Wow, respect to him! My great great uncle was a Il-2 pilot but he did not made it back to home since he was lost in action during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Very well researched and compiled video, you make really impressive videos for such a new and small channel.
Where are you from btw?
Thanks a lot for your kind comment. I am from France.
"We're two WILD AND CRAZY GUYS!"
By 1944 Japan was suffering so very much from Bombing raids its ability to use advanced engine design was for not. I have always thought if the USA and Japan could have come to terms on Japans expansion MILLIONS of Lives could have been saved. Sadly Japans cruelty in China, the taking of Dutch/French colonies sealed Japans fate. No one wins in War.
Yes indeed, politicians are cowards sending brave people to the death.
Another aircraft which never got further than an idea in someone's head.
There are so much insane like these, especially wunderwaffen.
A 'propeller engine' is known as a 'piston engine'…
Yes right, but not totally wrong.
A turboprop has a propeller but is a turbine engine, so not always true.
You deserve waaaay more subs and views than you get. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind comment 😄
@@manuwilson4695 It seems you like to dislike and pour out your anger here, congratulation for being my first hater, you're muted.
@F-14DTomcat There is a saying; "If you master the language of your enemies even they will respect you" 🤷♂️ Don't be lazy. Make an effort to at least correct your blatantly stupid pronunciation! And there is no such word as FASTLY in the English language. The correct word is QUICKLY!
Yes indeed, I can even tell you it is a Turkish saying and you are right and maybe have good intentions, but it was not necessary to insult me.
@@F-14DTomcat Pointing out ridiculous mistakes with English or any other language is NOT an insult!...Get used to it. 🤷♂️
No, a Dh Vampire looks like it
Vampire first flew in 1943 with an actual jet engine...
Whittle began sketching ideas for Jet air craft in1929
just a idea use mph as well as kph to get into the US and UK subs
Good Idea, I will apply it to my next videos. Thanks for your advice! :)
i am loving your work @@F-14DTomcat
Looks like the Saab 21R ,Swedens first jet which stated out as a prop driven interceptor.
Yes, and while making this video, I was wondering which of these two would be better if the Japanese project was finished.
no that thing even if produced would have not been a changing factor in the war because in late 1945 we had the p80 and England the meteor and vampire and with Germany defeated the allies could focus completely on japan
Indeed, and even if Japan produced a lot of these, ( something impossible at this stage of the war) there would not even have enough fuel for this.
It would not have changed the war much but it would have took us 2-3 years to adapt/strengthen aircraft give them folding wings build catapults on carriers. I don't think many carriers if any had them in ww2. But yes they where doomed any way it went.
It does.Indian Air Force flew em.
Fun fact : India tested the Ohka kamikaze rocket plane.
Good video but it's hard to understand what you say, sorry. Suggest yoi get professional speaker or use sinthetic voice.
Ditto, I gave up
Japanese pipe dream. Too little, too late. 🤷♂
