The human rights aspect is so important. I used to buy a lot of makeup but finding out how mica is made really made me change my habits and I don’t “collect” makeup anymore. Plus after Covid, I realized that I prefer less makeup or maybe it’s just what happens as you get older lol. I don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup everyday! As for clothes, I can’t tell you how many pieces of clothes I’ve given away with tags on them, clothes I bought for the hit of dopamine but never wore. When I was buying my condo, I basically had to go on a no buy because my savings had been wiped out. That time opened my eyes on how easy it can be to save when I have the correct financial goals in mind. Focusing on what I want my money to do for me helped me a lot. And now that I have downsized to a small place, it keeps me from overconsumption (mostly) because I don’t have the space to store a lot of things. I’m not a minimalist by any means and have spent the past couple years decorating it but I love my small, cozy apartment and I love almost everything in it ❤ I think I will start a no buy in June, you’ve inspired me! I hope you continue this channel because it does help me to be a more conscious consumer.
Yes great points, I've heard sad things about mica and it kind of blows my mind how companies support this stuff by only caring about their financial bottom line or how cheaply they can get their stuff. As I get older I definitely feel that less is more too, regarding makeup! And now I feel like I'm getting there for clothes as well, just have to do the work of curating/de-cluttering carefully to have less (and then not buy any more!). I LOVE the idea of living in a smaller cozier place. Right now though we live in a larger house with multiple generations (my in-laws are with us) but maybe in the distant future....but for now I'm just trying to be mindful that even if I have space built in I don't have to fill it with stuff! Best of luck for a no-buy June and please keep us posted! 😊
We can apply this wisdom to all our consumption on the internet. How we spend and use our time, how we fill our brain with knowledge or gossip or drama thru our media sources. We can no longer say we are learning or staying up to date. Even political shows are biased and are making corporations rich by our clicks, and they sell our interests and history back to ourselves so we are stuck in our spheres and unable to get out of them and it’s to their benefit.
I know you don't want to be an "influencer" for consumerism, but you are "influencing" me to want that Debussy Great Wave sweatshirt LOL. On a more serious note, however, as a consulting environmental scientist and biologist, I agree with your sustainability motivations. I am more and more impressed with younger people, like yourself, who are already so conscientious about the issues and adopting sustainability values.
haha uh oh! But at least that's the kind of "influence" that's organic and a result of something I actually like and use, and wasn't paid to promote 😉 Wow so what does your job consist of or what's the overall mission? I'm curious if you're willing to share! Beyond trying to be thoughtful with my purchases and speaking about sustainability publicly, I'm not sure if there are other steps I can be taking in the interests of the environment and if you have any more info I'd love to know!
@@Alexas.nobuyyear I believe you already are on the right path: understanding your inputs/outputs like the energy you use, things you buy (and by extension, who you buy from and the inputs necessary to produce it); food/water you consume; and the waste you produce (garbage, greenhouse gases), etc. Then working to change your habits around these things. The latter is not necessarily easy and you do what you can within the limits of time, energy and finances…which for each of us will look different. Now you are also becoming an inspiration to others by being the “irresistible power of a silent good example” (quote from a favorite book) by focusing on yourself and what you personally are doing so people around you can see you as a person that actually takes action on their values, and also by educating others with your UA-cam videos on what you have learned about consumerism and sustainability. As for my work, until recently I earned my living primarily helping clients comply with local, state and federal laws related to endangered plants and wildlife, and regulated habitats like wetlands. However, my real interest is habitat conservation/restoration. As a result of my minimalism, actually, I’m now able to afford to transition to that work.
@@pamelapeterson2987 ooh please let me know what book that quote is from too, sounds like it might be something I'd enjoy too! Thanks so much for your response, that's so interesting, and I LOVE that you can transition to the aspect of your work that you're more passionate about, that's inspiring.
I’m not loving social media for creating false sense of urgency in shopping. I’m reminded of French style and having fewer high quality pieces that repeat very often. I actually aspire to that. There’s a Ted talk by a lady, her book is Madame Chic. Her Ted Talk is about her journey to France and style and her 10 item wardrobe. Fascinating!
I wish you well with this journey. I tried the no buy and did really well for a whole year, then I allowed my "rules" to loosen up a bit the following year and I unfortunately went back to pretty much where I was before. I am slightly better than I used to be, but I had thought a year would be enough to reset my thinking, and during that time it did, but unfortunately I have not been able to stick to it as much as I thought I would after removing the strict rules. I hope you fare better!
Hey this is also valuable info - great job doing a no buy in the first place! I'm going to try and plan how to stick to it going forward after my year is over, and perhaps part of it will be continuing to create "content"/reflect publicly too. I also think that if you want to move back in the "no buy" direction, you can do it! (And are always welcome here with updates, accountability if you want, etc.)
you mentioned CHILE, and I got so exited!! haha ♡ I'm from Chile and started fallowing you a few weeks ago, it's been really helpful in my own conscious consumerism journey, thank you so much! ♡
I have a singlet top from a surf brand (probably just before your own Ed Hardy era, haha) which has been with me for 22 years now of wear (casual, work, holiday) and washing. And that was the kind of quality we used to have in regular stores. Now it just seems so different. Don't worry, you're definitely hitting your goal of making people think! I thought I was fairly OK with what I was doing, but there's definitely a few things I could change.
Hi, I buy 3 new items of clothing in a year. I buy one new pair of shoes. Most of my clothes were given to me or purchased second-hand at yard sales, rummage sales, or thrift shops. My craft supplies are second-hand or trash-picked except for items like glue or the occasional gift card. Tina, Al's wife
I have never been an advocate of SHEIN Eshakti or worse, Temu. All I can picture is those poor people manufacturing poor quality tat to fill up the landfills. We all need to be responsible and make a world where no one needs this stuff. I need to limit social media and exposure to these sites. I love your UA-cam because we are struggling with this first world problem that shouldn’t even be a problem. Thank you for your honesty.
Yes! The whole thing feels pretty hypocritical but that's the reality of where some of us are! Definitely think it's a societal problem but we can all learn to be better if we want to, so why not try? Thank you!!
I LOVE outfit repeating! Even if it is not the same sweater and jeans I wear everyday, I'm wearing a sweater and a pair of jeans everyday. And I repeat EVERY week. (A sweater becomes a t-shirt in spring, a tank-top in summer, t-shirt or sweater in fall). My style icons are cartoon characters who only have ONE outfit haha
I really look forward to hearing your thoughts about Stolen Focus, if you go on to speak more about that. I read it earlier in the year and was fascinated/horrified
I will for sure, I still haven't quite managed to finish it but I have so many thoughts and find it so relevant to the issue of shopping/consuming mindlessly...
I really appreciate your acknowledgment on the recycling piece. My husband and I have some different opinions there and it's led to some very good discussions because I too like to be optimistic whereas he is just very concerned that there is almost no point because it's not being recycled.
A lot of it just gets shipped oversees (I think glass and cans are a bit more often actually reused) and dropped off. Refusing new items and reusing where possible tends to be most important, and recycling if required as a last option.
My thoughts are tge same, I am average woman from Russia and I have a lot of clothing, even as here in Russia clothing and shoes are much more expensive. I want to escape the algorithm and start my no buy year from September 2024
Recycling is helpful, but only about 9% of plastic gets recycled. So, that's why just recycling plastic is not the solution to the plastic pollution crisis.
Thank you for this info! I hope it's a higher % for glass, aluminum and cardboard...but yeah companies need to cut it out with the unnecessary single use plastics!
Sure! If I remember correctly this video was posted before that one, I was kind of working up to the video of "everything I was influenced to buy" and I'm not sure I even knew what it'd all look like put together like that 😅
My favorite saying helps me: If you don't get everything you want think of all the things that you DON'T want that you DON'T get!!!
Haha that's great!
