    I have been subscribed to a lot of the same people you mentioned and also decluttered them from my subscriptions for similar reasons. I am not doing a no buy year, but want to be conscious about what I bring into my life. Just wanted to say that you aren't the only one who is frustrated by the constant selling

    At least two of those Kotn outfits will be decluttered within the year. My a-ha moments were (a) that she talked up horrid person Dave Ramsey who does stuff like interview prospective hires’ spouses and support extreme rightwing politicians, and (b) that she disgustedly decluttered dozens of Aritzia pieces then replaced them with Agolde and Anine Bing, then she disgustedly decluttered those and replaced them with Tibi, etc. Ah well, maybe the next more expensive brand will fix you and give you confidence and a sense of self. On the podcast, she became viscerally upset about the thought of buying a non-designer version of something, because how will you know it’s good without that? How will you get the special Dumbo power of the 5-cent tag sewn into the garment by a worker making a few dollars a day?
    It’s also just shopping binging and purging, only with ever more expensive items - so clearly an endless hedonic treadmill, perpetuated despite awareness of it. Useful as an example of what not to do.
    UA-cam style content replaced magazines for me after those fell off (RIP Mademoiselle, Glamour and Lucky), but now it’s getting drowned by advertising, too. I never liked Vogue’s fantasy editorials and then I found out that designers could demand not to be featured with any other brands and that your brand would get editorial space if you bought ad pages in the magazine. Ads eventually parasitically poison everything they latch on to. It’s not just that sponcon is selling you something, it’s that it’s inauthentic, like those articles that get churned out based on daily trending topics to make a web page to sell ad space on. Humans look to acquire useful information and knowledge from other humans, not content (dismal, accurate word) generated for ad space.

      As always I love to read your comments. I also have mixed feelings about Dave Ramsey because it feels a bit like one of those conundrums where some of his advice and intentions might be good but he himself is a problematic person - do we separate the "artist from the art"? But I'm pretty sure that the one time I mentioned him on my channel here (in relation to debt payoff) I also mentioned that he's a problematic person. So I don't know, I guess my personal answer has been to acknowledge both sides of it. I don't listen to the podcast after finding the first few episodes a little dull (not entertaining and not giving me new ideas) but that sounds kind of elitist. I guess when I think about it all of her "thrifting" for clothes has been consignment stores and not at the local goodwill, so there's that too.
      But yes her constant declutters are a huge red flag, my other point of contention is that she's repeatedly said she's "not into dresses and skirts" but the proceeds to show tons of sponsored or gifted dresses and skirts saying she really wants to try it and get more into that. I just have to question whether one "should" try to go against our style instincts or even feel like we "should"...and also whether she would be "trying it" if it wasn't free or for paid content.
      I'm having even more thoughts about style in general and will eventually talk about it on here, but to give you a preview, I had a moment of realization watching music videos at a bowling alley - the protagonists of such "produced" content, movies, TV (the other "videos" we see) tend to ACTUALLY have a personal style that is super defined whereas many of the "style" creators I've seen on here do not, and instead cater towards adding trendy pieces (in one way or another) or sharing brands that just do more of the same kinds of basic items...presumably, a more general approach in order to be able to sell.

    Your comment about "finding different parties" really struck a chord with me. I've noticed that now my life doesn't revolve as much around consumerism, my friendships have shifted, my interests have shifted, my priorities have changed, and it often feels as though I'm going against the grain, as overconsumption is so normalised and encouraged by society. But honestly I think it's done me so much good - I've built a better life and achieved things I would never have managed if I'd still been putting all my resources and energy into social media, shopping and stuff. Here's to those new parties, and not drinking the consumption Kool-Aid.

    This was such an interesting and relatable video to watch! I unsubscribed from so many of my favorite creators last fall. I find it MUCH harder to resist recommendations from creators like HLP who brand themselves as “conscious consumers” because they really romanticize the way they speak about the stuff they want/have and because they already earned my trust.
    Plus, because they often buy less or recommend fewer things overall, I have this perception that the recommendations they do make are somehow better. So once creators transition away from no buy content or start accepting sponsorships it’s easier and I’m happier with what I have if I just don’t watch at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

      100% this. I think also in the case of HLP she really doesn't often do outright sponsorships, compared to other channels, and in fact the more romantic way she speaks in general would make most "scripted" sponsored content feel really out of place in my opinion - perhaps she even realizes that her best way to earn through products is through discount codes and affiliate links rather than "sponsored segments" because of this. But it's still putting products up for consideration to the viewers regardless.

  • @imaclassact

    I had a similar "last straw" experience with the first creator you mentioned, but it was for a video on how to stop buying and then towards the end it was like 20 minutes of shilling products. It definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. I was pleasantly surprised though when I went to the comment section and saw several people calling them out on this. I think some creators have "lost the plot" and have been blinded by the sponsorship/affiliate $$.
    I also officially started my half year no buy/low buy! I'm really hoping this is the reset I need to get my personal values back on track.

      Actually she has some degree in marketing, she talked about it in some of her early content. So she KNOWS. That’s the sad thing. I was one of the critical comments… I think I will rewatch some old content but I have unsubscribed after watching only irregularly for over a year.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому +3

      Yes I saw that one too! By the time I got around to watching there were several critical comments up already so luckily I knew what was coming and could leave at that point (or was otherwise prepared even if I did let the video run, as like I've said I'm often doing housework or something and stuff like that comes up I only half pay attention) but my attitude towards putting a video on in general is changing too, where I don't want to even receive subliminal messages that increased consuming is okay in the background!
      Welcome to the journey of no buy/low buy! I would love to hear your updates whenever you may care to share in the comments!

    I think these are really interesting ideas, advertising has become so "integrated" it's hard to determine where the selling ends and the content starts. It helps me to identify that the person is trying to sell me something.
    Just saying out loud something like, "This creator is trying to sell me Athletic Greens or a Helix mattress". It helps me to break out of the fog.

No matter what it is, it goes against the grain for me. I hadn’t really thought about it as I move past the sponsor part of their video but if their remit was spending less and promoting spending less, they should choose their sponsorship wisely and not to get free things if they would normally buy it, and money for promoting someone else to buy it when they may not need it. My weakness is mostly fashion, so I immediately recognized the second creator you described and share many similar thoughts about her channel and others. I really appreciate how you compassionately share your thought process and the evolution therein, which makes me recognize my own evolution. I also love it when individuals can hold multiple seemingly contrasting points or truths at the same time (e.g.: this behaviour makes me wonder its ethicality, while I also respect their right to operate that way AND I understand that not everything is geared towards me). Please keep creating video's - judging from the comments here, it's clear that I'm not the only one who feels this way!
    edited to add: I guess with some creators I feel like they have lost their authenticity and a true adherence to the values they pretent to adhere to, which gives you that so called 'ick' - and which is why I think that your channel and train of thought feel like a breath of fresh air - to make this comment come full circle. 😀

The other thing that is annoying me lately with some fashion youtubers are that they don't even wear what they demonstrate, they wear them for the videos of course but a few have admitted or let it slip that they don't wear them in 'real life'. How pointless is that, they keep a separate wardrobe just for filming on youtube. Do we even really KNOW what that person's style is, and actually, do THEY even know? Again not saying to judge, but just observing possible issues or contradictions.

    I am always slightly off topic since I am not a shopper. But I gain great worth from this intricate and so timely channel. Capitalism - the worship of money and consuming - is toxic and we have built our culture and lives around it. We work too hard for stuff we don't need and shouldn't ( much of the time) want! We waste time and important other concerns including our families and friends. Your channel IS a remedy!

    I'm kind of lucky when it comes to influencers since most of the stuff are not even available in my country or cost a ridiculous amount to ship to me (except amazon stuff, those are still obtainable so I'm trying to be careful).
    for example, if was watching a video from a chanel I used to be subscribed to but now just occasionally click on. she was talking about a specific fragrance brands and the testing kit she got (nothing sponsored, it was actually a good review for those who need it). one of the scents sounded exactly what I like and I went to their website to check the price out of curiosity. there was an option for 3x10ml set, but even that one was like 140$ in shipping alone (plus 80$ for the product). I clicked off the website in the second I saw it.
    so expensive shipping basically saved me a LOT of money over the years.

    Yay Karolina Żebrowska 😍 She's the best! My intention was to do a no-buy this year -- it hasn't gone as well as I had hoped, but a huge improvement on the damage I did in 2021 and 2022. This year I have found myself doing mass unfollows of creators I used to watch religiously -- they are all "luxury" content creators, mostly small channels of fewer than 10k subs, but as I quit shopping for designer goods, I too had a moment of realization that their videos were VERY repetitive, so many unboxings, sponsorships that made no sense (cheap jewelry and those roses that never die, etc), and I began to view their content with such a heavy sense of... I don't know how to put it... their lives are just strange and unrelatable to me. How do they justify all this new crap all the time? What is really going on? Are they ok? What happens when the camera turns off??
    I am trying to think if I ever fell for any of the sponsorships by channels I watch... probably Brooklinen? But I mean their sheets are awesome, lol. Waited for a sale. This year I have shifted far away from content about "buying stuff" and more toward content about books and mindfulness and financial literacy.

      @Alexas.nobuyyear  3 місяці тому

      Hey, same for me and my no buy! Not perfect but a huge improvement nonetheless, and I have learned so much even though I "failed".
      And yeah it is strange to me also how so many "youtube creators" make content that feels very "produced" in a way, makes one wonder if these people really think and talk this way in real life or what. And not like Karolina's content where any "production" is for an obvious reason, comedic or otherwise!

    I just watched a vid by Nick Lewis in which he says that he makes more from his Amazon links than all of his other affiliations COMBINED. Even though he rarely promotes Amazon directly. Now I can see how tempting it could be to focus on them.

    Thank you to talk openly about it. I had two UA-camr I followed making temu sponsorships - these were last straw moments for me. I think it’s important to openly talk about these problems and also about the creators because it displays the system. Even minimalists depend on sponsorships. That’s the reason I mostly switched to smaller channels or channels that make clear - it’s a side hustle or just a hobby. They mark the few sponsorships and that’s it. But in the comments under the „last straw“ video you see that a lot of consumers on this kind of content are not aware of the system - or have the delusion that the creator is not part of it.
    I completely understand how you get into the spiral of sponsorships and affiliate links if you support your life or even your whole family with UA-cam or Social Media in general. It a big pressure. And if a project (like online decluttering lessons) doesn’t work out that well you need to find ways to secure your income. Of course, there are influencers who start with consumerism and want to be a influencer from the start. That’s not who I talk about. But I think maybe for others quitting their day job is a step in the wrong direction in the long term - for their security and their content. I still follow one who tried and went back to be creator as a hobby. Good decision.
    I actually have a nebula subscription because I wanted to support some creators who don’t want sponsorships and want to stay independent with their content. I was very much into minimalism videos but after all - it’s still, mostly, about stuff. After a lot of these creators didn’t appeal to me anymore because of to many sponsors or affiliates or recommendations I try to shift to more meaningful content. Not just bikes, climate town. I try to find a channel sharing thinks about mending and repurposing that I like. UA-cam still can be a inspiration- as your thoughtful content shows ❤

      Oh my, I have not seen the Temu sponsorships, that would be an immediate NO. I had a friend in real life say she got something off Temu and my immediate response was OH NOOOO even though she wasn't trying to sell me and I really wasn't trying to give her a lecture, or make her feel bad... I just couldn't help it 😅
      I guess the other thing for me about social media is that a lot of times people who are making it their full time job are making a LOT of money on it. I saw Shawna Ripari do a breakdown where if a creator has certain amounts of videos on UA-cam that get 100,000 views per month, the income is already several thousand dollars just from ad revenue - or, enough to compare to a "regular salary". I'm not as experienced to run similar calculations and also don't really know what people charge for sponsors but I've heard that people can make thousands for just one sponsored video. So yes, it's pressure and security and etc. but at the same time it's also possibly HUGE income for people with large followings...to the point that some people probably would be ok if they stopped working altogether.

    • @Siures
      @Siures 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Alexas.nobuyyear the problem is you have no security net as an influencer. If you get ill, for retirement, if there is a problem with UA-cam not uploading a video for several reasons. It’s also psychological. If a video doesn’t work as the videos before I would get anxious about it - no matter how much I actually got from it. And I would try to make it more secure somehow- with a sponsorship. It’s a lot of pressure - probably the same as for a freelance musician. A sponsorship is something like an employment in a orchestra or a music school - a bit of security.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому +1

      @@SiuresI do understand how other avenues of pay provide security and I can really empathize with the idea that yes, I have in fact done freelance music gigs that I wouldn't have done if I hadn't needed the money because the gig otherwise did not really line up with my values. So that IS very helpful perspective! There is more to think about there, thank you!

    Ive been thinking about cutting back on my favourite content for a while now. I think UA-cam is a bigger problem for me than I have been willing to admit. If I didn't watch UA-cam I would hardly shop. The reason I don't is because I love watching my favourite creators style clothes. They are SO good at what they do and I get so much inspiration from it; but inevitably a piece of clothing makes an entrance that I just find too irresistible. I also have a feeling that if I did a UA-cam fast for a month my productivity would be off the charts!

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому +2

      Yes! I have found the same where if I cut the source of exposure (seeing things to "want") then "not buying" and not shopping becomes so much easier.
      Take this very channel as evidence that cutting back on shopping DOES increase productivity - I started with one video a week in January, and just managed a week with seven videos! Ok it's summer (my regular work is on pause), and I won't always do daily videos. But in previous years I wasn't even making videos at all, which is a form of productivity... and I do plan to refocus on my "main goals" (music-related) as soon as I can bring myself to jump back in. (Been putting some off for literal years.)

    Finally someone who thinks the same about giving up a meaningful career for becoming an influencer (of course, their content is also valuable, but still).
    The way I go about the ads is that I just don't watch them. I skip them when they're in the middle of a video and ignore the UA-cam ads. So, I don't mind someone being monetized. It helps the creators but the ads don't interest me, so no damage done. Maybe I'm not susceptible for ads in general. I have never purchased a product advertised by influencers. Mostly, because I just don't need it. For example, if AG1 is shown to me, I don't even consider buying it because I have not used supplements like this before OR I would buy them in my local pharmacy. This goes for many items. I often like stuff from popular brands like Vivaia - but shipping and returns keep me from doing so (I live in Europe). So, I stick to local shops or brands that easily and more cheaply ship to me. Even if I technically want a thing I just (I know, easier said than done!) don't buy it. Because it's a general rule for me so to say.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому +1

      Right, I have pretty mixed feelings because I don't think it's entirely wrong to get support from other companies in order to create something valuable to people. But maybe what I'm seeing is that a lot of people value "stuff" and people who constantly show "stuff", and I'm just not sure that this is the way for us to be happy and fulfilled.
      I also skip ads (unless I'm listening in the car and can't) and I don't usually get caught with the first exposure - but, sometimes I notice after seeing things several times I start thinking I want to "try" them - again like the greens powder: I didn't try AG1, but I did get a different (cheaper) brand to try out.
      Luckily "not buying" is also becoming a general rule for me this year too, FINALLY 😁

So, I'm not sure sponsored content would align very well in general. Perhaps I need to seek out Leena's video and see how she navigates that! I'd be more open to doing paid content on a music channel since that's my actual area of expertise and passion...and there ARE channels where I don't mind sponsored content or ads because the content to me IS worth it. I have just realized that much of what I used to watch out of habit is not worth it. I will definitely be thinking about these nuances more!!! Thanks for asking 😄

    Hi Alexa 👋 I'm a new subscriber, not even doing a no-buy year, but I absolutely love your channel & videos! I started my own decluttering journey back in 2021. I still had a bunch of paperwork, stationery, old clothes, etc. That just wasn't serving me anymore. I watched The Minimalists' documentary ages ago, and ever since that, I started focusing on streamlining where I can (e.g. my makeup routine, skincare) and this changed my entire outlook. While I still enjoy shopping (tk maxx is a huge weakness for me 😅) I actively only try to buy what I need vs what I "want". So I think Christina did something very admirable by paying off her debt. That is just incredible to have done in her 20s. However with the colour analysis, the Allison Bornstein 3 word thing, and the wrong shoe trend, her style has gotten worse. Like every outfit she puts together now I think is awful.
    I think it gets into not having a strong sense of self, and trying to project a certain idea or feel. They say it's an evolution of style, but I think that's an excuse because it matches so consistently the aesthetic and trends in their social media space. The lack of strong sense of self is indicated by being heavily influenced. So you see these people going through a "minimalist" era, where they particularly get into a quasi spiritual belief system, and then drop it. That pattern to me indicates one is bereft of spiritual contentment.
    Edit: i think being mindful of lusting after products too much, or mindful of being driven by materialism is good. I think making minimalism your temporary religion is not good.

      Oh man this is bringing up a lot of thoughts about the concept of style and whether or not "style evolution" is in fact what having a personal style entails...I can also see how the 3-word thing can also be used to "justify" adding pieces or wearing things you may not normally, just to serve the idea of the 3 words, and, is that actually your style then or are you actually NOT being true to what you actually gravitate towards?
      I just started reading the book and I think one of the 3 words IS a "fantasy self" word, which kind of strikes me as possibly unhelpful when confronted with the practicalities of getting dressed. (I haven't finished the book, mind you, so my opinions are underdeveloped here).
      I guess the other thing this is helping me to fully realize is that in Christina's case I was kind of kidding MYSELF into thinking she had "minimal, sustainable" ideals where the content she puts out actually kind of is more "general style content" of someone who can afford to buy "elevated", non-fast-fashion pieces on a regular basis (dare I say, often). Or at the very least her concept of "minimal and sustainable" does not align with mine, I believe "sustainable style" means NOT bringing in new pieces very often because you already have found your signature clothes and "look" and are genuinely happy to just wear what you have.
      Sorry for the rambling but thank you for provoking further thinking!

      I’ve unsubscribed from Christina Mychas’ channel a few months ago. I found her channel start to get to un relatable for me about a year ago. When you show that your work from home pants are $350 pair of sweats from Tibi…that was it for me personally. I do still watch her on the Sustain This Podcast which she does with Alyssa Beltempo and Signe from Use Less. Of the three, I find that Signe is the most relatable, who wears normal and not fashiony clothes and has minimal sponsorships and ads on her videos. Mostly she promotes her color analysis services. I’m almost ready to pull the plug on that too because, though they have good topics, they just seem to scratch the surface of each topic. I’ve been waiting for them to be brave and to go deeper, but it hasn’t happened yet IMHO. I’ve unsubscribed from many larger channels and have started seeking small channels that don’t have the paid sponsorships and are more relatable for me. I’ve been sewing for the past few years, so most of the UA-cam content I look for are “how-to” sewing skill videos…and documentaries! I love documentaries.

      One minimalist creator I used to watch, did a sponsorship for better help. In the ad she said that she has never needed to use the service but it's great. At least she was honest but how can you sell something you've never used? And it made me wonder how often this is the case. I had to stop watching her because every video became sponsored. The last straw was when I even fell for AG1 from this creator. After trying it, I'm like of course people can recommend this if they are given it for free! It made me realize how sponsorships in general, can't be trusted. Your perspective is totally different when something didn't cost hours of your time.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому

      This! Yes! Sponsored content and also even if it's just PR. Like if creators were honest, there's only a few categories that product can be.
      It's either (unlikely) a product you already know and love, in which case maybe you've mentioned it organically, unsponsored, and would ACTUALLY talk about it for free. I wouldn't get too mad if this was all the sponsored stuff we saw. Or maybe a brand you DO genuinely want to try, in which case you need a testing period before you know if YOU would rebuy it, and certainly should not recommend it before you know this.
      Or finally it's a brand you either chose NOT to buy or haven't even heard of before, in which case why would you even consider being paid to recommend it? Oh right, it's the whole "being paid" thing. 🥲

      Right? A lot of times they seem totally scripted and therefore all the same. But I do appreciate the few examples where the personality of the creator is so strong that it's still present even during the ad segment and I think it takes much more skill to integrate that way. Like keeping IN character and theme, versus the "theme" just being "basic everyday life" and therefore I can throw any product at you.
      In some ways it almost suggests to me that if you HAVE a strong character presence, strong message, thematic presentation, and ad is more forgivable and doesn't dilute everything you're trying to stand for, whereas if you are general "relatable" creator it is just distracting from your message to put in the sponsored segments. Hmmm...

    The spice jar example...agree completely...why in heck would you throw out one jar to replace with another, waste time pouring spices and adding labels. I also feel like this plays into a completely useless tendency/pressure toward perfectionism. I understand not liking the look of different jars, but then put them away in a cabinet where you don't need to see them. I have noticed a thing with some minimalist influencers...that is when they reach a certain point, when all the decluttering is done, and just at the point where they should be sitting back a bit and enjoying the benefits, and maybe pivoting to new content that is about the benefits of their minimized life, they start doing these "perfectionist" things. It's like they...just....can't...stop.
    With regard to storage containers of any kind, one of the best feelings in my minimalism journey was when I got to the point that I was giving away now empty storage containers, from the big rubbermaid tubs to the pretty little boxes/baskets...all the containers I bought to "organize" my excess.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому

      Yes! And congrats on reaching the point of having nice storage because it's not necessary to have the large plastic bins.
      Even more ridiculous when you think that in a normal person's life, how many people see the inside of your pantry or spice cabinet? I can count that number on one hand (maybe two, I have a lot of family here) and it's 100% family and close friends, not people who would care or even appreciate how neat that area of my life is. So why does anyone appreciate or care about seeing a stranger on the Internet's perfectly organized spice cabinet? Not saying people who have become interested are bad for that but to me it just suggests that maybe something weird is going on.

    I love UA-cam and TikTok but funnily enough UA-cam is the main root of my shopping problem and not TikTok. I can resist the TikTok shop very well but as for UA-cam…it’s to the point where I can’t really watch my favorite creators because I will get triggered to buy every time. I know it’s my problem and not the creators fault but also seeing UA-cam morph into this online home shopping network is sad. It used to be a fun space where people could just review things honestly. But now the overconsumption is out of control and I’m doing my best not to participate in that. One of my favorite movies is Brooklyn, it’s a coming of age story about a woman who leaves her home in Ireland for a better life in America (Brooklyn, New York) and I think it’s set in the 1940s or something but the fact that the main character rewears her outfits in several scenes is so realistic to how people used to have a small wardrobe. There are even two beach scenes and shocker she wears the same bathing suit and sunglasses! It’s a beautiful film and it reminds me of how simple consumption used to be before marketing went overboard. Mad Men is also a great show about advertising! Sadly, you have to buy an AMC subscription to watch 😑

Without a warning we don't have a choice to avoid until the "ad" has already started and I really don't like this, at least not when a creator is set up to make money from it.

    I don’t like when they are not honest with themselves about their declutters and new buys. They don’t realize they are simply following trends. “I don’t really wear that neckline anymore. It’s not really my style anymore.” No, you’re tired of it because it’s not the latest thing anymore and you want the latest thing, and you’ll act like it’s your taste when really you were just sold something yourself by Pinterest, or TikTok.
    My other let peeve are the young influencers who predict ends of trends and semi-mock people wearing old trends while simultaneously talking about the environment - “what’s in/what’s out”. I hate that. Young people watching are not strong enough to withstand that.

      Yes! Your last point is part of the motivation for starting to do more wardrobe content on here myself - I want to see more creators truly not buying into new trends, truly not bringing in many new pieces each year, so I figured I better at least try to practice what I want to see. I also feel like the constant cycle of buy (or PR) and declutter is just another distraction from developing true personal style, so I'm curious to see what happens to my style if I purposely try to not participate in the "latest", over the years. Not to say I won't add anything new, ever, but I am planning to have a "maximum number" of new things brought in next year after no buy.

    Also sorry, but one more thing after i read the comments section in this video, why does people being compelled to trash other like styles or or living style? Why so little wiggle room? Also who makes the commenters the judges of their lives?? I mean if you wanna spend time swap spice containers thats not someone elses choise 😂 you can have thoughts and questions if its minimal or not, but how anyone chose to interpret minimalism differs and it is personal. Not only one straight line to goal guys!! Most of these comments comes off as mother knows best from tangled or jealousy and that a little bit sad. I thought minimalism had conciouss and more caring people but obviously not…
    If someone wanna show off their hard earn, concious and expensive purshase? Then fine!! Isnt that great?? That she don’t have to buy shitty quality that creates child labour, environmental mikro plastic and have to re purshase it in half a year?? I look at that as a goal.
    Edit: i personally just choose to skip creators ad and kinda differ from the creator and person i watch.
    What I do instead is not purshase anything with a visible logo on. Lets say purse or tote with advertisement or big logo/print all over, tops with title all over like levi’s and things like that.
    I simply choose to watch the person I like, and filter what I don’t need.

      I agree that judgement is not the way - and I really do try to not judge or be open to people having different styles and tastes and etc. even if sometimes I say the wrong thing - I think at least for me with that specific video it wasn't just the spice jars but the fact that it seemed "product focused" and I realized, for me that isn't the kind of video I wanted to watch. And that IS my fault this time! That creator has put "products" in the title of the video so I should have not clicked on it. Of course they should make and show what they choose to.
      I think my goal here was to express that at this point in my year of thinking about shopping and "stuff" I have realized that just because I like a creator and I like a lot of their ideas, I do still have to be careful that I don't just click everything they make without thinking what I might learn from it. I hope that makes sense - it was supposed to be a lesson for ME, to get better at filtering what I don't need.

    Minimalism isnt just about getting less stuff, its about beeing mindfull. At least to me. For me having a container under the sink for my stuff there is helpfull because its easier to put things back for me if i do. Same with makeup and other things. That might be her intent aswell, giving tips to finding tools that helps the dayly shores easier. I also have the one in one out rule, and it makes me more aware and mindfull about what i already have and purshase. Dont forget there is many ways to goal. Everyone needs money, they chose their sponsorships to fit themself, and if you dont wanna see it, just skip it. The content may still come in helpfull. Completely agree that creators should be mindful off who they let sponsor them tho, for many reasons. Also on mo thing i, even tho creators influence us, they are not resposible for our lives. They cant force us to buy anything, but its easier to focus outwards and finding faults, put blame on others rather than taking self accountability. This is actually smth your shannel have made me realize i need to focus more on, and i have a project going on thanks to this. Being influenced is a choice. I commented this in a similar form unter the video we talk about: there are a lot of affiliate links. Maybe a DIY project would do the job better. Or a hook with a little wire container from the basement. But we don’t know as you cannot buy them on Amazon - no links, no money. I cannot trust a channel to really offer the best solution if it’s paid in any way. And it was only the last straw. Her wardrobe videos always irritated me. She is also very close to another UA-camr who even made a temu sponsorship. Ok, maybe it’s a bit unfair to put it on her as she’s not the other UA-camr. But everything suddenly has a brand / shop. As the very practical hooks in her boys room makeover ( one of the last videos I actually enjoyed). It’s easy to say you’re not influenced by it. But the massive amount of products, of consumption shapes your „normal“ and as she’s a minimalist who buys 10 pieces of clothing from brand XY - why shouldn’t I? Although I don’t need it. Although studies say that more than 5 per year is unsustainable. It’s indirect influencing for „keeping up with the minimalists“.
      We don’t know the intentions behind this content. But it’s clear: as you make your living doing these ads you’ll be influenced yourself, you’re not independent in you decision what to show. For some long-time subscribers they also have a parasocial relationship with these creators. They feel like it’s a FRIEND making recommendations. The comments often showcase this. Therefore it’s so important to talk about this. If you still enjoy the content - go for it. But I think it’s important to openly talk about the problems because not everybody is aware.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  4 місяці тому +3

      I totally agree that it's about mindfulness as well and more about "keeping what is valuable to you" and sure, for some, organizational solutions may still be valuable. So your comment really brought up something interesting in me because my "answer" to that I guess, is that I want to make sure that I'm not letting other people influence what I think is valuable - at least, not too much. I don't want to see so many people getting organizers that I now think I need that, even if I didn't initially see that as a "need".
      With that particular creator I do still find a lot of what she says and shares to have value and I want to get the value of the IDEAS, but not the value of whatever "stuff" that they might value for themselves and their own lives.
      Influencers make their income this way, but I would also love to see content that is just spotlighting the ideas without also showing stuff or sponsored brands. Maybe that's a lot to ask these days and I'm definitely not saying they should not, or that it's "wrong" objectively even if I personally would prefer not to dilute my ideas with ads or sponsored segments if that ever comes up in the future of my "social media presence".
      And yes, they can't force us to buy! My closing points this week are basically exactly that, that while the system may not be helping us because it's full of ads and sponsorships and things that entice us to buy, ultimately we have the power to choose not to and I personally definitely don't blame anyone else for what was a "me" problem that I can change. I'm definitely not trying to avoid my own responsibility in this or place blame externally even if I do believe it's kind of an issue (or pitfall) of the system.
      Thank you for encouraging this further thinking and exploration! 😊

    We watch nearly the same content creators and I am so tired of the sneaky sponsorships, especially for some big purchases. I dont mind if for example Christina Mychas Shows her laundry detergent for a couple of Dollars, but I hate when creators are CASUALLY promoting a matress and it cost a couple hundred Dollars..i mean come on. Often the creators are Not relatable for me anymore. I prefer watching someone, who is financially in a similar Situation as I am and tries to do the best of it (even if you cant be sure, if it’s really like that irl). Recently I unfollowed Patricia from a small wardrobe. Even though it’s totally normal that you can change your mind I didnt find her Diva/glam wardrobe inspiring for me at all. I liked her vibe before because there where unusual colors/combinations and it was so different from the typical minimal wardrobe. So I thought I watch some old Videos from her and they are nearly completely gone (or private?). I understand as an artsy girl myself that you sometimes have to destroy your works because you genuine dont Like it anymore. But it rubs me the wrong if the Videos which helped become a Full time content creator are completely gone. Well I didnt thought to give my two Cents here, but I find it quite interesting that more and more people start noticing this. Anyway I am so glad you were in my recommendations because I am slowly watching your Videos from the beginning and love how you influenced my mind in a thought provoking manner! 💕 edit: i highly recommend Malama Life - i cant Even remember if she ever had a sponsorship. Sometimes the product does make a difference, but other times for me it's about the sheer quantity of ads on the channel. Like in Christina's case I'm fine with laundry detergent, seems useful and more "eco-friendly", ok, but in the next video there'll be a clothing brand, a purse brand, AG1, betterhelp, another clothing brand....and at this point it's not so worth the inspiration or advice I got from her to keep seeing these ads!
      And yes I do like Malama Life, especially the focus on nature and the ocean on her channel 😊
      It's so interesting to me about artists destroying their work because to me it is almost more about society and how society judges, than the validity of the art. I might be eating my words in the future if I ever look back on these earlier videos on my channel here, if I keep going...but at least right now, I believe that my content here is an honest reflection of a past time, and I don't think I need to delete the beginning of my journey even though the quality is already worse than my "current work". If someone wants to judge me on my "past" and not the work I am doing in the "present", that is their decision and not mine. And it shows the path of the creator from then to now - even in other forms of art! And the path of change in my opinion is one of the most interesting things about the human experience.

As a young child and teen (I stopped watching tv for several years in my late teens and 20's (1990's) and now I just don't care) I was BOMBARDED with advertising and quickly developed a thick "ad immunity skin" (partially through getting burned with deceptive ads *glares at Saturday morning cartoons ads*) and learned to ignore them (unless it was Star Wars related - never outgrew that). I can still sing ad jingles to products that I NEVER buy. My suggestion - desensitize yourself to the ads, or even view them as more entertainment - they will ALWAYS be a part of entertainment media. Because it seems like if you’ve already got the mattress and you’ve already advertised it, why do you continue to advertise it anyone who knows let me know I’m very curious.

      So I'm slowly learning by having this channel, but anyone who uploads videos once they reach a certain point (1000 subscribers, 4000 watch hours I think?) can start earning "adsense" revenue, so this channel earns some revenue that way but even so, for me it is still a hobby and I don't earn enough to cover living expenses or anything like that at my current "size/view counts". I might do a recap of that after a few more months.
      More of the money is in sponsorships - sometimes creators do just get free stuff but if they're doing it as a job they'll probably have negotiated a deal to get paid for promoting whatever the product or service is.
      I would guess that that creator with the mattress is getting paid for a certain amount of "features" or "ads" of the product.
      I've already decided from the beginning that my channel here is not a product-channel so I'll probably never make significant income, but the reason I'm here is to learn for myself anyway. I consider any "adsense earnings" a major perk for doing the reflection that I'm doing!

    This is some juicy video with juicy comments 😂 I follow certain "minimalist-ish" influencers and stylists who later on contradict their previous values that made people subscribe to them in the first place. Some of the content just don't feel the same and I just couldn't recognize the channel anymore. It's like the minimalism was just a phase that happened to them during the pandemic. 😂 The styling tips are gone, basically 10% tips and 90% selling. Majority of the videos are purely ads from the MOST ANNOYING and MOST AGRESSIVE BRAND EVER ON UA-cam: LilySilk.
    P.S. I also follow TwoSet and Rick Beato OMG 😂 I do play bass, but I've stopped playing (just before pandemic happened) after experiencing anxiety attack during my last gig

      Wow maybe it's time to pick up the bass again, bass players are always the coolest 😄
      And yes - I think I've learned since this video not to point out specific influencers as I wasn't totally comfortable with the juiciness of the comments 🤣
      BUT it's more clear to me even now that some creators got swept away with opportunities to sell and make money, that they kind of threw away their values...and it's also like society has conditioned viewers to be okay with this, "support their creators" making their money, etc. when really maybe we should be questioning whether watching is still valuable for us.

    I’m guilty of the spice jar thing 🫣 Except it was because my pantry is in an awkward spot so spices were being left out constantly. I wanted to do a spice drawer but nothing fit without buying shorter jars that I have to decant and fill. If I had a cabinet space for them though I’d just buy the same brand to get a “cohesive” look if that matters to you like why store double

      I think part of the spice jar thing at least in this video is that the person who was doing it had specifically said they weren't going to do that, or that people didn't need to do that, several times! But if the solution makes practical sense, go for it 😁

    Im another one who pays for UA-cam premium. There are certain types
    of channels I cannot stand to see on my recommended page. Family vloggers peddling overpriced children’s clothes and cleaning products, those annoying digital marketing people selling courses, dating content, people who have a new fast fashion H&M Zara haul every week, and vegans (arguably one of the most advertising heavy niches on UA-cam) - they all get hit with not interested/don’t recommend this channel.
