    iPhone 8 done well here. My how tech has grown! Larkin Poe are an excellent band of sisters. A mix of blues and rock of high order. Great voice! Puts me back to the 1960s/70s.

    As someone who just "discovered" this very talented band a few weeks ago, and who enthusiastically explored a decade of their evolution on UA-cam, I lament that Rebecca Lovell does not seem to be playing the mandolin in recent performances. She is a world class performer on that instrument, and for me, the imaginative transference of this relic of her blue grass past into a rock context was one of the attractions of Larkin Poe. Megan Lovell seems to have made the slide guitar into a very bluesy lead guitar equivalent, but the mandolin probably presents even more of a challenge.

      Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

      People grow and move in new directions. I love how they and other great artists are breathing new life in the blues and blues based rock. The mandolin is a fine instrument, but Rebecca's Strat fits their blues and blues rock wave better!

    Very nice work, much better than the crew at Munich. The women were balanced and well micced. Sound was very clean and classic Larkin Poe. I love it when Megan goes out in the audience with her ancient Rick lap-steel. You all had a great crowd! CONGRATS!! Much better.and juicy! JW DC

    So here's my big question for all of you fans. Has anyone ever seen them perform Ain't Gonna Cry live? It's absolutely one of my favorites. Such a powerful and emotional song. But I can't find a live version on UA-cam.

    • @531dd
      @531dd 5 років тому

      Agree, great song. Only live version I can find is this one, audio only though: ua-cam.com/video/UN20shzRLdg/v-deo.html

    • @dnett57
      @dnett57 5 років тому

      @@531dd yeah, I found that one. I just can't figure out why it seems they've never done it live in concert. I've seen several other full shows on video, plus I saw them myself in Houston in November, and they all seem to be mostly the same set list.

    • @LaurAmy29410
      @LaurAmy29410 5 років тому +4

      @@dnett57 I actually asked them about this song right before this show in Hamburg because I would have loved to hear it live as well. And Rebecca told me that it is one of her favorite songs as well, but she didn't bring a guitar that can be tuned low enough to play it. But they will make sure to play it live in the future :)

    • @dnett57
      @dnett57 5 років тому

      @@LaurAmy29410 that is an interesting answer... It seems to me that the primary instruments in the song are Megan's lap steel and a bass guitar. I don't hear a standard electric guitar at all. In my head, I picture this as one of the few songs where Rebecca puts down her guitar and just pours herself into the song vocally.

    • @gymrat22able
      @gymrat22able 3 роки тому

      @@dnett57 Almost all non-jam bands do almost the same set list,night after night. That's so they can get the 'Show' part right,night after night. If you were ever fortunate enough to attend a few Grateful Dead shows,you would immediatly notice.....no 'show'.
      Larkin is a blues/rock band. There are going to be some songs they do in studio they can't do live. It's not a bad thing,it's just how it is in the 'business' of music.
      However,this in no way takes anything away from their incredible talent and bond together. They just aren't a jam band.

    …...well…..the sisters have shown so many times, that they are exeptionally gifted musicians but in this Show they could have done much better: problems with the sound and the mixing, sometine problems with the vocal and instrumental intonation; also the setlist seemed to me kind of problematic (a Larkin Poe set without "When God Closes a door"?.....not building up tension in the set……). I think they just had a bad day and I look forward for better vids and better live Shows of Larkin Poe

      You do realize this was recorded by an individual with a cell phone in the audience, not a professional recording. Also this person was standing right next to the stage, great for video, but not the greatest location for acoustics. And sorry but it's dumb to knock them cuz they didn't play your own personal favorite song. You should relax and just enjoy their talents, as opposed to criticizing something that you could never do in your life.

    • @Hearthman1159
      @Hearthman1159 5 років тому +2

      As for not playing "When God Closes a Door", it could have been a security issue. Those lyrics are not exactly complimentary tone group in particular related to shooting up Paris. The main group poked fun at can take a little tongue in cheek but it won't stop us from praying for their salvation. I"m not sure how you assert your expertise in recordings against a cell phone recording of a live performance in a venue and not a sound stage but it that boosts your ego, pump yourself up. I'd love for them to have a whole professional crew but they just aren't that big....yet. Be patient grasshopper.

      Yeah, looking at where this show took place, I can see them leaving that particular song off the set list. Hamburg is a well-known center of extremist members of that "particular group," as you put it.
