Bathtub drain stopper replacement

- Tips for replacing the drain stopper in your bathtub. In this video I replace an old frozen up Push/Pull drain stopper with a Tip/Toe type drain stopper. The most important part of a replacement like this is getting a new stopper with the right diameter stem, in my case it was a stem with a 3/8" diameter.

Great tip on getting the diameter right on the stem. Saved me a trip back to the hardware store - Thanks!

THANKS A LOT FOR THIS VIDEO !!!!!!! I NEED TO CHANGE MY BATH TUB STOPPER AS WELL ☺☺
That's cool a sink and tub can have a pop up drain
Thanks for the video. Just needed to remove mine to snake it and this video removed my anxiety.
Thanks.
My stopper does not stop the water at all, and it is very similar to the one you show in this video. What I would like to see (I am all thumbs) is how to remove the old stopper to go and buy a similar one at home depot. Thanks for this video.
Very helpful, thank you.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for this video. I was going to buy a new valve. It turns out it was clogged underneath the valve with hair. Cleaned it out and it’s as good as new.
Thanks for the information.
When you remove the old stopper and take it to the plumbing store, make sure the new stopper has the same thread size and that it is the same diameter and length as the old stopper.
Omg thank you!!!!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks
Thanks Greg.
So if the housing was still intact this would work however the part attached to the tub that the replacement is screwed into is broken. How do I take the entire part out?
We have several bathrooms and tubs that came with those stoppers. They age badly. After a few years, the spring can fail or gum up, worse the screw on connector to the tub freezes and can be work to unscrew. A common issue is the rubber skirt gets dirty and you have to unscrew it off periodically to clean the rubber and the seat around the tub drain. Aan old style rubber "cork" drain stopper works all the time, no fuss, no cleaning, its often self cleaning and self cleans the drain hole each time you insert it as it rubs the grime out; if you need to its easy, just wash the stopper with soap and wipe the lip of the drain before plugging. Cork stoppers work even as the stopper ages, whereas those push-stopper rubber get brittle with age and finally won't seal. As the cork stopper ages, the inner parts are still soft and will still form a seal until you buy a new one. The only flaw in cork stoppers is its ugly.
Good information, thanks for posting.
Help! How do we replace a corroded and broken bathtub drain and stopper? Currently we have a twist and close drain stopper and drain, which are badly corroded and breaking (we just purchased a foreclosed home that needs some work). The water does not drain properly because the stopper and drain itself are in very poor condition.

I would try an online search for "how to fix a pop-up drain stopper."
I have a Mirolin brand pop up stopper. I can’t figure out how to adjust it for a better seal, to stop the water from leaking out. Maybe it can’t be adjusted?
Yeah, the stoppers I've used couldn't be adjusted. You thread one in until the screw on the base of the stopper bottoms out and that's it.
alright goodstuff cheers for this,b ut now tell me if you could pls.our bath is newly refinished and the american lads who left also left something that im assuming needs to be popped off so as I can put the drain stopper down into it. iv never installed a bath before so iv no clue as to wether i pop it off with a screwdriver or does it peel and i dont want to go messing anything up either. cheers and ty.
Sorry for the late reply. It might be a plastic insert that is there so they don't drop something down the drain on installation. I would try and carefully pop it off.
If it was just the stopper in bad shape you could just replace that, but if the drain is in bad shape you may have to call a plumber for help.
take out top part and unscrew it from the bathtub. if you push it up little u gonna be able to open it..
Help. My screw is stuck pushed into the new drain and idk how to get it out
You're screwed, man.
My stopper is spring loaded and has locked down, I have removed it but it5 is still kocked down how do I un lock it?
Might have to replace it if it won't plunger into the open position.
How do you remove one of these tip/toe drains once they are installed? I have one and I need to replace it. Thanks.
Check out this link and see if it helps: www.plumbingsupply.com/how-to-remove-a-tub-drain-stopper.html
Thanks man! I'll try it and let you know how it goes.
Michael Perkins
Good luck.
How did you remove the old stopper?
It threads out of the fitting in the tub.
How do you get it out though -- do you use pliers do you use a screwdriver do you use a hammer??
When I try and get mine off it just spins and spins and doesn't come off.
yeah mines to this video didn't help 1 bit.
mine does too
Ok idk if this is a really stupid question but i just moved into an apt and i took a showrr and the bathtub is full of water now... it has a push stopper i tried several times ans nothing... i just removed it (with help feom ur video:) ) but the water is still in the bathtub... does this has anything to do with the stopper? Or do i need to call a plumber?
If you got the stopper out then it sounds like you have a slow drain. I would try some drain cleaner before calling a plumber.
I just moved to an apartment that has the same exact stopper as yours (the new one that you've installed). It stopped working after 4 months and won't stay down. I don't want to let my super know about it after this short period of time. Trying to check on HomeDepot's website and can't find it. Are they called something else other than water stopper? Please let me know where you have purchased yours
I believe this is the stopper I bought at Home Depot for the video: www.homedepot.com/p/Westbrass-Tip-Toe-Bath-Mechanism-in-Chrome-79338MOCP/202551043
Thank you so much! I made that stopper my bitch!
I got the top and rubber seal off but the brass screw will not unscrew. I tore up my hands trying to get it unscrewed. It won't budge. What now?
Kathy Boyd
Can you take a pair of pliers and get the stopper to thread out?
+iScaper1 Same thing happend to me , can you please make a video of that?
+Juan Morales +Kathy Boyd I ended up using a Grabit drill bit on the brass screw. You drill it in according to the instructions, about 1/8" inch I think, then you reverse the drill, and it came out like magic.
+Juan Morales The brass screw had crusty stuff (mineral deposit?) on the bottom of it and was basically fused to whatever it was touching.
Thanks
Does it need to have a stopper? can I just take it out and replace it with a hair catcher?
+latincupidd
You can simply remove the stopper.
iScaper1 that what I figure, the stopper it is only for if you want to take a bath, so since I usually take showers I can remove the stopper and get a hair catcher until someone is going to take a bath?
+latincupidd
Correct.
iScaper1 thank you
If you only shower. And no one in your house bathes.
Big whoo.
This is not a good video. Any idiot can screw a drain in. You should have shown how to adjust it when it doesn't hold water (which is highly likely). Also, my drain experienced a problem where on of the springs slipped out around the brass screw. I am trying to find a schematic on how to reassemble the parts. Do-it-yourself videos should concentrate on the likely problems, not the ideal situation. Most people don't encounter the ideal situation; and when they do, they don't need a video to explain it.
somecommonguy You're describing something that isn't HIS issue. Why don't YOU post YOUR OWN video?
