The black rubber seal that comes with the drain assembly and slid over the drain threads that go to the drainpipe should be used to replace the black rubber seal between the drain pipe and tub. People make the mistake of using it for a seal under the drain flange instead of a plumber's putty. That is a mistake. I never trust an old black rubber seal so I will always replace it since you are at the seal area anyway. Take care in not over-tightening the drain to the pipe or you can damage the pipe if you over-torque it. Just make sure it is nice and snug and fully seated. Good video for this assembly.

Great video. Most people do not know that the gasket under the tub is called a bathroom shoe gasket should be changed to prevent leaks. Expensive leaks. Gasket is about $6.

I'm using needle nose pliers and a wrench, the drain keeps spinning but won't come up/unscrew - any ideas on how to get the old drain out?

Thank you for the step by step instructions. Great video! However, yesterday, I had a big problem when I was replacing my bathtub drain. By the way, I live in the UK in a brand new flat. I removed the bathtub and once I tried to install a new one I realised that the main pipe connector under the bathtub was not there anymore to connect it (screw-in). This was due to the main pipe not being fixed and rather was left flexible moving around the floor. And the worst thing is that I cannot access under the bathtub as the side panel of the bathtub cannot be removed easily as it is fully fixed on the wall with tiles on it. If you have a solution for the situation please do let me know. Thank you.
Thank you for the input. I will remove the side panel fix the pipe and restore the panel and tiles. I beilive the tiles are ceramice tiles which you can find in any home improvemt store. Otherwise, get advice from a local licensed plumber.

1. Yes you can with different tool. I think there is a UA-cam video that you can see how to remove drain with broken cross metal.

I think use BOTH washers. Doesn’t hurt to have one on top as well because the drain recess allows flush install even with the washer under and lasts more than putty.
No. You should not put rubber between the flange (bathtub drain) and the bathtub you may have water leak . You should use silicon or putty.
Joseph K I know they say that, but I don’t think water can physically get past the rubber washer between the tub and the drain flange with the two pressed tight together. As a matter of fact there should be a smooth surface for the rubber washer to touch the tub for good seal, and Inside the tub is guarantee to be smooth as you clean it and inside the tub is very smooth by manufacture. Underneath the tub might not be so smooth and we cannot see there. Could be dirty under there.

No it is not the same . There was already rubber gasket in the drain so I did not need to use the new gasket. You must use putty or silicon to seal the flange o the bath tub . Please look again on the video.
@@josephk9182 never use silicone or putty, as all these things wear away after time when the hot water hits it, the best is the rubber washer it will hold up the longest

@@josephk9182 Don't agree, be doing this for 20 plus and my final conclusion is the rubber last longer, because all the times i've used putty it wears away after a period of time when the hot water hits it . So from then on a started to use a rubber washer on top (thin one) and one on the bottom (thick one. This same principle works on kitchen sink strainer baskets. That rubber will never wear trust me as i've worked on many old and new tubs
@@worldview730 I installed the drain per manufacture recommendation. The recommendation is to use a plumber putty not rubber(washer) otherwise, the manufacture will supply rubber (washer) for it. I did not have any issue with putty. Most likely if one has an issue with putty he probably would have not install it properly. The reasons may be that he did not tight the drain as needed or did not use enough putty.
I have the same drain removal tool however it did not seat far enough down in the drain to get a good grip. Any other suggestions? Thanks
You should look for tools in amazon that works with your drain.
Your new drain comes with instructions. If you read them there is a description of the gasket, it's called a shoe and it fits between the bottom of the tub and the flange at the top of the drain pipe.

You should use PB Blaster Or Wd40 Find it on Home Depot. Also ask in Home Depot if the have better product. With the PB Blaster it have to sit for 12 hours or so (please read instruction)
there are many videoes on replacing tub drains and tub drain stoppers which is fairly simple but i cannot find one video on replacing the backside and tieing into the drain which seems to me most dificult for a DIYer.

Should the drain flange be tight where you can’t stick a nail underneath it or just tight enough. Just installed a new one and just scared to go any tighter
Follow the video. You need to use putty and install it tight enough that water will not penetrate via the flange. Please do not be afraid to tight it. Not very tight but tight enough. After you install it test it to verify water are not penetrate the flange.
Joseph K okay thank you! Also the gasket looked a little worn but can’t seem to find the exact one via hardware stores. If putty is good will that prevent a leak or should I worry about gasket also in that case
If you token about the rubber gasket I do not believe it will be an issue. Did you have leak before you replaced the drain ? The putty is good enough to prevent leak .
Joseph K yeah the gasket that goes between tub and pipe, it had a slight tear and was just worn but no previous leaks. But I assume if putty prevents flange leak then water won’t get past that gasket either

Wouldn’t it make sense to replace the rubber gasket as well since you got a new one ? - who knows how well the old seal will hold up when you re-tighten the new drain.

Gah! I think we put the bushing in upside down ... we put it in first (removing it from where it was originally attached). Also, the plug part came apart and we can't figure out how to put it back together before we install it ... :(

You can get it in Home Depot or Lowe's online or in the store. Look for bathtub drain.

You probably should have replaced the washer. The replacement part uses a bushing to decrease the diameter of the drain. The new washer matches that new diameter. Might not matter, but if takes about 30 seconds to change, so you might as well do it.
You can but it was not an issue in my case and never give me an issue.

No. You do not need to replace what works but you can replace it if you want.

The developer actually put some white stuff around the drain metal to zeal the gap between the metal and the tub. When i cleaned the bath tub, I did not notice the seal, and I accidentally sculped some of them out. How can touch it up?
It is probably white silicon. You need to use white silicon to touch it up.

@@josephk9182 Please believe me, today I called two companies of plumbing experts and both said that since I am living in a condo apartment there is no way I could replace it unless I get the permission from the lower floor owner to do the changes from the lower floor. I am shocked.

Don't tell me your going to use back that same rubber washer , why don't you put the new one in there? Only thing is you can't see underneath the tub shoe to see if it's a full proof seal from leaking
I did not replace the rubber because it works properly. I never have a leak from this bath tub. The tub is located on the second floor and if this tub leaks I will see the leak on the ceiling below.
@@josephk9182 You won't know unless you proof test it by looking at it and you sure can't tell from the top. Most guys are not going to do this i understand because of the work involved. I've worked on many tubs old and new and have changed these overflow systems all types and know what i'm saying from experience
@@josephk9182 you don't know if that rubber works or what it looks like because you haven't inspected it. Those rubbers become compressed and worn so while you have it exposed and a new one you might as well change it one time
