Katche recorded this while waiting on a taxi to the airport. Story goes he was waiting in reception in Peter studio having finished his stint there. Peter walks through and asked him what time is taxi was arriving. It wasnt for another hour. So he asked him would he mind putting a take down on the track very quickly, just so he had some more to work with. Ended up using the whole thing.
@@johnswan6759 well I guess it’s much to memorise… it’s always “my biggest hero did that while he was doing something else and it’s suuuper impossible to do that” blah blah blah. It’s like the the story with Andy from police(he recorded a song in one go 😮😮😮) there are drummers recording several Albums in one day, that’s a little more impressive than playing a simple beat while waiting for a taxi lol
A great example of where the drums are in service if the song. Nothing crazy, just a great rhythm and the right touches in the right place. Thank you for the video!
This is like taking your ferrari for a smooth and relaxed ride..., you know you have the power to go anywhere blazing fast, but you don't care about that, you just want to enjoy life
I disagree. This is like buying a Ferrari, keeping it in the garage and only starting it up to give the engine a little rev. I'm not sure why this performance is worth posting. Thomas is a fantastic drummer, I've seen him live many years ago. But this performance is really nothing to watch.
Just a lovely groove that sits right in the pocket nothing fancy by the man who can do everything on a drumkit.... But quite simply he is playing for the song and it is superb
@internettoughguy ummmmm....... I'm not hearing what you are bro. This dudes played more to a click than everyone responding to this video combined lol
@@jerodbosh7630 You can hear the original snare of the track he's playing to. Thomas' hit lands just a bit before and it's consistent. It could be just a weird delay but "in the pocket" would imply his snare hits match the original exactly. I hear two distinct hits so...
It’s weird but there are loads of covers of this song but seeing one of the best players in the world doing it note for note is just utter class …and really inspirational…I met Thomas at a clinic he’s such a great guy really down to earth and an utter great human being ..
lol despite how much he's known for his crazy chops and instrumental stuff, he's actually had a pretty good career as a sideman for lots of artists particularly in Germany & Austria where he does a lot of playing for the song and grooving but it seems to *alien* to watch him do it because we're totally not used to it at all 😂
...joined a TL workshop in germany 20 years ago....couldn´t believe what i saw an heard there....and it went more and more "unbelieveable" during all the years...but this one Sir, made you an even more absolutely top musician!!!....Peter Gabriel didn´t wanna have Phil Collins playing on this album....and finally Manu got the gig and made it groovy as hell....TL could have made it also. Thank you so much....
Lang is a great drummer and technical monster, but Manu Katche is, for me, like an alien who descended from another planet. I still remember the first time I heard him. I was driving down Lakeshore Drive in Chicago in the late 80s with my then girlfriend, now wife. Robbie Robertson's Somewhere Down The Crazy River came on the radio. One bar into Katche's groove and I was transfixed, a changed man in a sense, moved by the beauty and originality of his gift. I still am.
Manu did such a good job with this cut that it’s super fun to play it close to his parts. I found that deviation lessens the impact, it’s about perfect 🔥
There’s something about a pro drummer playing a straight up song no show off fills and just solid on the count! Awesome job. This is one of my favs to play. Harry styles as a nice cover of this on Howard stern show
I mix local bands playing live. I watch so many musicians who just LAY IN TO IT immediately. So frustrating. Can't imagine working with someone like this. He just sits in the pocket until he's needed or can add something significant. Such a great musical awareness. MAD RESPECT
An absolute master at work. The uninitiated might mistake him for an amateur because he isn't doing crazy fills every 5 seconds, but years of dedication to his craft taught him what to play and what not to play. This was perfection!
I don’t even watch the video before I give it a thumbs up, I see Thomas Lang and it automatically gets a like from me! That being said, I remember watching the DW Candyland video and someone made a comment that Thomas can’t groove?! I hope that no talent, jealous, hot pocket eating, living in their mom’s basement, “person”, watched this!🤣🤣🤣
Love it! I’d love to know what happened to his learning Lux Æterna on the fly video? Along with his Sweetest Taboo cover by Sade? They just vanished as I assume this one will.
Beautiful discipline in action from a guy that could over play this tune to the moon. Young drummers pay attention, the money is always found in the pocket.
the snare was layered with a lot of tambourine and also some kind of metalic clap, it's well made process sound, maybe by using some sampling or gate reverb trick those tree layer made a very efficient snare sound and make the groove of Tony Levin bassline more infectious !

Wonderful to see such a capable drummer just relaxing in service of the song and enjoying at the same time.
Listening to this one can only appreciate Katche's performance even more.
Hope he will never tries to playback "In your eyes"

You don't see an office guy smiling like that when he's filling out excel sheets. This is taking joy in your job.
Obviously you haven't seen me at working Excel . :)
Oh yes you do!
You haven't known the sweet satisfaction of a perfect formula.
The groove on this track is awesome
Absolutely love seeing an absolute powerhouse like Lang just showing what it means to play for the song and sit on the groove. Absolutely unreal.
What a great song.
Freaking amazing. Crazy how a simple groove FEELS so good. Manu is smiling. So am I. 🙂 Thank you for this, Thomas + DC!
A simple groove done well
This is just pure mastery
Just the coolest ride. Thanx Thomas!

Thomas Levin and Tony Lang. Thats the grooviest groove that ever grooved in groove town. Nice.
Yup.

Je n’arrive pas à cerner ce qu’il ne sait pas jouer à la batterie. Je pense qu’il est techniquement le meilleur du monde
So wonderfully swung! thanks Thomas
Man, what a beautiful kit.

thomas est un monstre de technique , pour avoir eu la chance de faire un stage avec lui , il y à quelques années. bravo thomas.

One of my favorite songs by my favorite artist! Excellent job- you do Manu Katche proud!!
Love it. The joy! This is what playing is all about ❤
It’s great he’s doing a diverse amount of songs.
Nothing like just having fun on the drums. Nice cover Thomas.

Absolute quality drumming, solid as a rock
I always enjoy watching Thomas play.
I admit I was expecting some sort of crazy things, just because... I am satisfied because the groove is crazy tight!
Love it. Nothing flashy, or fancy. Just straight ahead, clean playing.
Gentlemen this is pocket. This is playing to what the song wants. No shoe horned in fills. Just an excellent performance!
Which is out of character for Thomas as boy does he love shoe horning in fills wherever possible.

He nailed it!! Nice bro
Outstanding, Mr. Lang!
Peter Gabriel's works can never be modified. And so he did. Period.
Nice gift to Peter!
Happy birthday Peter!
Thank you Thomas!
So cool to see a technical master just laying it down, smiling away. I’ve seen Steve Gadd do the same thing.
Awesome!
Today on history channel. The first time I’ve ever seen Mr. Lang play drums with an open grip. 😮😮
Was just about to comment that!
Elementary Skill Level for Mr Lang.
HUGE misconception on your part. He would agree.
The rhythm section in this song has always been on of my favorites, what a groove and Thomas nails it too, whilst enjoying.

Um, confused. The fill at ~1:48 with the double snare hit, he doesn't play? So there's another backing track running here.
Lang is beasting it up per usual.
That is it!
where did the double snare on 1:48 come from?
It's the original track, Manu Katché on drums.
It'd be awesome to see Thomas cover some old Genesis stuff too. Imagine that. Supper's Ready or Cinema show.
