honestly 97-01 are all pretty special too and still connect me to that era. i was just listening to 04 recently and it's a pretty underrated show that was more of a classic dci show than people remember. 2002 early season was great....the old version of the ballad was amazing
pearlsnaredrummer77 lol.......I agree with you but reading "Dan Hurd suck badly" is kinda offputting in more ways than one.... if you don't know the context
perfection on so many levels....ridiculous, really... especially musical dynamics and clean separation of notes. brass and percussion are clearly synchronized due to who knows how much practice.
I marched that year - but for a different corp. This show has grown on me over time. Candide is such an amazing piece to start with. My all-time favorite by the Cadets is 84's West Side Story, but what gets me every time I watch this is the flag toss at the end - in perfect synchronization - and they don't catch. You can hear the noise of the poles hitting the turf almost in perfect unison just before the last note. I rewind and re-watch that moment at least 5 times every time I watch this.
and they have to really move to get to that spot too. When you watch it over again and you know how the end is and you're like, "how in the world are they going to get there?"
Wow, I marched with them in '85 when we did this for our closer. (for context). I have watched this version many times, and it is awesome. I had never noticed that flag toss without the catch. Amazing. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@hughdunbar9823 What did you play? I cut my DCI teeth on the '84 - '87 Cadets. My first year in high school marching band my high school hosted a DCI contest and it was the summer of '84 and I got to see the Cadets do that WSS show live about a month before finals. It's why I ended up marching. That show in '85 is HIGHLY underrated in my opinion (as much as it's possible for a winning show to be underrated). That music from Jeremiah is so damn ahead of it's time as far as drum corps shows go. Is it accurate (as I've heard) that you guys marched 80 in your brass line that year? I always remember hearing that your horn line was bigger than normal that year. Bravo!
@@hughdunbar9823 I remember listening to your show over and over (and OVER) in my car on CD. As I said in another comment, that show was underrated. The section of this video linked below from about four minutes in until the end of the video just blew my doors off. I loved that it had the balls to be sparse, syncopated, and not easy to sing in terms of a melody. Some corps try that today but can't pull it off because it's just busy for the sake of being busy. ua-cam.com/video/huQWtCAFFlM/v-deo.html
Is there a reason why the entire piece was transposed down? I mean, it cheapens the quality of the music. It's like if Ariana Grande decides to take her music down a key or two, it doesn't sound the same.
In the instruments all being in g I'm guessing idk they might have put it in an easier key for them also they might have had 2 valves not so sure when they started using 3
The reason is because at the time, they were on 2V bugles in the key of G. A good deal of the music performed before the 3V, fully chromatic horns became common are usually in a slightly different key. I don’t believe that corps started going 3V until 1992 (it was ratified in 1991) - I know that BD went 3V in 1992, and the Cadets were usually a year or two behind because of the costs of the horns.
@@BACcontrabass 3 valve was approved for Soprano in 90. You'll see Dev's and I believe Cavies using 3 valve. Cadets were a 100% 2 valve G bugle line in 1990.
@Micah Lall-Trail the first sop run alone goes from A in the staff to D above the staff.... with double F punches all over the place. It's in the key of F on a G instrument. Key of C would be unplayable down a 4th and chipmunky up a 5th. If you're taking concert Cmaj.....I think that's what you're listening to.
I really miss THESE Cadets. No gimmicks... just a good "Cadets" show. You could close your eyes and INSTANTLY recognize this as The Cadets.
Cainan Cornelius Totally agree. For me, 89-96 was peak Cadets. I really dislike the direction they've taken lately (2015 being the exception).

Stimulator7 ... and suck

Apart from Star of Indiana's hornline and drums nobody is even close to this visually. Not even in the same league.
still about as perfectly executed drill as there ever has been
I gotta believe the Cadets will be back to this level some day. One person doesn’t define a world class organization, no matter how influential.
I agree

@@feverpa Thanks so much. I was a contra player for them in '85. Still one of my proudest moments. (top 10 for sure)
I love this style so much better than what the activity has evolved into as of late. But change occurs
I Saw This Show 1 Week At DCI South They Placed 3rd . My Friend Said Watch It Next Week They Will WIN IT !!!! And THEY DID IT !!!!
OMG I just learned that their drum major is on my high school's field staff!!!!
DCI could learn a lot by watching this.
Beautiful! Just BEAUTIFUL 💞
My drum major audition piece finally located at last
still love the 88 show js.
Darn near flawless execution! Good show!
mellos and bass drums at the end = perfection
Ahem... that was mellos, lead sops and bass :p. Hard to make a sop sound like a mello. Glad we fooled you!
*CHILLS*
Best of Tha Best!!!!
❤️
The 10 snares are a thing of beauty but why did they wear their carriers outside their uniforms? Just curious.
Because they had to Dance during the ballad. Not kidding.
In the ballad, the snares were split up between dancing and playing bombast in the pit (I was one that ended up dancing)
Snare 88-90
0:14 RIP side 1 mic
Still bummed to this day that happened. We ended up being the quietest hornline in DCI history because of that mic.
When does the pitch bend happen? Lol
Not an emotionally evocative show, but so impressively performed at some of the highest level ever achieved.
Is that a close up of Mary Jo at the end?
HugeJohn51 Mary Jo to the right and Marisa/Carissa/Carina? To the left (solo dancer in Maria)
A lot of hate for this corps because crowd favored cavies. Both had great visuals, drill, guards and OK horns. The edge was that drum line.
Back before the activity became corrupted. Now they have lost their identity and it's a complete disaster.
Your black and white thinking is annoying. Go away.
Ugh

There's nothing you can do to make Ariana Grande sound good.

This core used to be the big red chewing gum of marching arts. Present day, it’s soy gum, now with 20% extra estrogen in every pack.
corps
Soooooo, you're blaming the women?
I don't like the key this was played in.
Jose Saavedra I can't imagine playing it in a different key without breaking my fingers. This Was Still the 2 valve G bugle era.
