  • Dear Santa Clara Vanguard,
You were my first favorite corps. My connections through friends, educators, teachers, and peers runs deep. Although I marched the Bloo team, I have always had respect for the west coast Red team. It is hard to believe 2023 will go on without you. We all hope to see you back soon, stronger, and better than ever. Don't be gone long. There are more memories left to make.

For this art form, it hurts when ANY Corp stops bringing joy (e.g Glassmen, Oregon Crusaders and even Pioneer), but to see one of the behemoths of this industry to just “stop” making magic, the sadness that I feel for all SCV alumni and for the kids that were looking forward to the camps, move-ins, the tour and creating lifelong friendships/memories is overwhelming.
I was a professional orchestral musician and never had the pleasure of performing Drum Corps, but my son marched for five yrs (Phantom)and I lived vicariously through him.
Without SCV, for at least this season, finding Nirvana will be a lost cause.

Today at indoor percussion practice, one of the graduates from my school came to visit our school. After she heard about SCV not competing, she described entering her college’s music hall that day as unreal. She even found out about how this one guy was crying after he found out because he just got accepted. I think that’s how the story went. Anyways, don’t be gone long, SCV. 💚❤️

I still remember watching the1980 PBS broadcast as SCV came "off-the-line" (though not literally) with Rimsky-Korsakov's Procession of the Nobles and that first asymmetric drill that blew everyone's mind ... I had played Procession of the Nobles in our school orchestra (2d trumpet) and hearing that work coming from Birmingham AL via the airwaves proved that Gail Royer was a genius, ahead of his time ... like the Beatles leading the British Invasion, if not for SCV, the marching music activity would have stayed anchored to yard lines & hashmarks & symmetry for much too long ... but SCV was NOT the harbinger of the death of traditions (THAT is the legacy of the Allentown Predator).

    Dear Santa Clara Vanguard,
Though I may not be super knowledgeable in the ways of DCI because I'm a woodwind player, I still cannot express enough how much undying respect I have for you and the rest of the corps, both active and inactive. It's sad to see you go, and I hope you won't be gone for long. Some of my favorite moments of yours were the last big hit of the 1989 version of "Phantom of the Opera" and essentially your 2018 production of "Babylon" in its entirety. There will never be another corps as daring or as memorable as you, and I, along with the rest of the Drum Corps International community will miss you. I can speak for myself when I say that I want to learn how to play mellophone because of you. Promise you won't be gone long. There are more memories to be made, like what Sforzando said.

Full disclosure, I am a phantom regiment alumni, and I believe that the kids of SCV have every right to replace the SCV corps leadership.
When Gail Royer was corps director, he also arranged the horn music and taught the hornline. Since Gail died, the corps has hired countless legions of "professional mentors," financial experts, and social compliance officers - to what end. THEY HAVE PROVEN TO BE LEGIONS OF INCOMPETENT PAID PROFESSIONALS. It takes a LOT more than putting a corps on the field. Don Warren used to say "the hardest part of drum corps is done on the practice field, and in the Board meetings.
Disastrous decision making isn't unique to SCV.
Last year, when Phantom Regiment desperately needed a corps director (in the second week of MAY) a multi-millionaire phantom regiment alumni offered to apply for the position and accept $0.00 pay for being director! Guess what, although desperate for cash to run the corps, pay for a new food truck, pay instructors, et al, the multi year alumni was turned down for the position, only to Pay (2) alumni brothers to both be co-corps directors. These are the very type of decisions that add thousands of dollars to the cost of membership. THAT is the type of "quality" decision making that also has caused SCV their 2023 season. Not one corps in existence will have been in finals every single year since 1972. Gail Royer would be livid. Don't get me wrong, SCV isn't the only group to have idiots running the organization - SCV is the most affluent group on the field, and not even SCV can overcome the idiotic leadership in place right now. The KIDS of Phantom, SCV, Madison, Cavaliers, Spirit, Cadets (and other groups), need to fire the lame leadership at every one of these groups. Care to know why it costs THOUSANDS of dollars to march just a few shows these days?? Look no further than bad leadership at your corps. When I marched in phantom regiment it cost a DOLLAR per week for dues and $150 per tour for food (2 tours). That's right, the reason regiment got incredible kids - the whole year cost a member $352 - so they could attract a lot of kids and be very choosey. For this to happen to SCV; it's an inexcusable oversight by not only the idiots running SCV, but also DCI.
Now the worst part; let me know how many SCV leaders resign because of this complete failure, because if history is right - none of them will resign. That will make the problem of successfully operating SCV in 2024 a very difficult task. Maybe you don't agree with me...

First, Madison goes co-ed ... now SCV goes inactive, breaking the streak of finals appearances ... seems that DCI is where traditions go to die ... part of why I stopped any & all financial support for DCI after my nephew's final season with Magic of Orlando in 2003 ...
Please don't bother trying to change my mind ... it is MY opinion, and only DCI can do anything to change it ... and I am THOROUGHLY convinced that they never will, since what is termed "DCI" is (for all effect and purpose) BOA-Independent World Class, and has NOT represented DRUM CORPS in a LONG time ...

Madison is not "co-ed" it's gender neutral. If you knew anything about the accepting nature of Madison, you wouldn't wonder why they needed to go that direction. If you can't understand that, you were never meant for the Madison way of seeing things.

@@Apollostowel Regardless of why they had to go the direction they went, they will never be what they once were, and that's a shame. It's also quite hypocritical to be on your high horse about an accepting nature while rejecting someone's valid opinion. Where's your accepting nature?
