The next part in my patch-by-patch series! Since we did 2 of these in a row, next video will be a change of pace - will talk a bit about 8.3/current in general
You should do a video of just reading and browsing through old forum posts, funny ones, angry ones, good ones and compare them to current forum posts... Pretty much can show how times haven't changed.. that a lot of what people argue, complain, and cry about on the forums today (10-15 years later) is similar or exactly the same to what players were posting back then. A lot of these old forum posts you show in these videos are quite silly, so the old forums may be worthy of their own dedicated video.
@Trevor Holmes depends on context. You say BFA is crap but once Shadowlands is out and whatever after that you'll probably look back on BFA with fondness, similar to how players today look back on Warlords of Draenor with fondness. As old forums posts through out the years show, everyone's always complaining and think the current expansion is crap. Even expansions which are looked back on and lavished with endless praised, i.e. WoTLK, the forums were exploding with so many complains about how bad it was, hand-holding, dungeons were crap, etc etc. but today WoTLK is regarded as one of the best expansions even though at the time when it was still current, it was far from it and you had a ton of players angry at Blizzard.
I was pretty young back in the year 2000 but I was playing Everquest on my step-dads account back then. The GM's often were in game interacting with players and creating events it creates an amazing community experience IMO. Something unique I remember at halloween time one year all the normal mobs I was hunting were replaced with skeletons.
I started playing in 1.2, and it was a great time to join, as it was early enough that you really didn't miss anything, but late enough that launch glitches had been worked out.
If you use eyes of the beast with your pet at strat UD, have pet run out there is a free fall, after you land you can find one of those portals still out there.
Dude you really love A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy X right? Keep hearing their soundtracks in your videos, thank you for reminding me of these awesome memories and each time this puts a big smile in my face. Thank you for your awesome work, keep it up Madseason!
As always a great video. Legends of Valor was the first game I recall players going about their business. It was buggy as hell but probably one of the first real WoW type games at the time.
1:35 This has been confirmed not to be the case by the book 'The World of Warcraft Diary.". Essentially, the Dark Portals placeholders were just that: Placeholders for the Dark Portal, since they did not decide where to put it yet. They later on just forgot to remove some of them. Before you comment that the location of the Dark Portal has already been established in lore: They were willing to change that for the game just to make it more interesting.
I had the same experiance as Christ on the Gnomeregan boss, played a priest healer and got killed by the bombs bc nobody knew the mechanics back then, and coudn't get my Civinad Robe. had to run the whole dungeon again. On the positive side, it felt even better when I finally got it !
One thing we've enjoyed in the tactical shooter genre recently is a resurgence of games that don't hold your hand (Tarkov for example). Unfortunately the landscape is just so different for MMOs nowadays.
I have the second version of the original WoW strategy guide by Brady Games. I enjoyed using that instead of the internet while leveling up this time around.
Only played ff8 and I never had a guide Well that also means that I actually never finished the game back then Played it for many many months and loved it Kinda funny how not beeing able to finish games was pretty normal back then , but these days it would be ridiculous
Music at 3:50 is Calm Before the Storm by the Super Guitar Bros in case anyone was wondering. Just wanted to post because I love it when he uses this song. It is awesome.
Shops don't close at night in Morrowind and npc's don't have schedules . Some npc's have small patrol areas, but none of them ever sleep or go to work in the game.
Star Wars Galaxies actually did the holiday stuff before WoW. During Christmas, there was an event called Life Day which is something that the wookiees celebrate in Star Wars lore. You could get free gifts like paintings or other dwcorations for your house. They also had other events, one called Empire Day but I think they removed it bwcause the theme was problematic.
Like you said, WoW probably made holiday events popular, but Wookiee Life Day debuted in 2003 for "Publish 5" on December 16th, while Winter Veil debuted December 14th, 2004....so, technically SWG did it first :P Great video though.
Asheron's Call had holiday events back in 99-00 when it first launched. Not sure about Everquest or Ultima Online. WoW actually pulled heavily from these games, as well as other MMO's that were out. The whole "exclamation point/question mark" over quest givers heads was ripped off from Asheron's Call 2.
Pre-honor PvP was the best PvP. I never had more fun in 1st year WoW than when the sole point of PvP was fun. There were plenty of fun times after the honor system was put in. But it was never quite as good. The concern for points and ranks always hovered in the background. It was at its best when we all fought to just ruin each other's day.
Some people bring up the idea of a "hardcore" server with other similar rules. More xp required, harder tuned raids, more expensive training - I think that would fit pretty well if they ever decide to go down that route(they probably won't)
Mad: "You can use guides now days to help your experience as opposed to back then" Me: "Ha I had never used a guide and I never shall. I will either find it out for myself or I will miss it."
Ever heard of a little game called Ultima V? NPCs would have schedules and actually go to bed. So if the guy selling broad swords was asleep you would be SOL till morning. Of course the day was NOT a literal 24 hour day and you could sleep to make it go faster. But this was 1988. Not an mmo, but the concept has been around for a while.
Once you get to a certain point of no-lifing you're close in level to players who really just care about leveling - that's what happened to me on faerlina on the rerelease. Most of the higher levels just sort of left each other alone since they were so hyperfocused on getting 60.
I think that games becoming more overall convenient to play is a great thing. Allowing a wider group of people of different ages and diagnoses to play games and still have a great time is a huge mark in our worldwide efforts to be more accessible!
For 5:40 I believe wow at least in the western games was in charge of popularize, japanese and korean mmorpg's tend to do that and other stuff like marrying since some of their first games.
Honestly. I somewhat think that not making the spirit stat improve the chance to break long CC's should be overturned and returned to the game. Not classic ofc.
I don't know what version of Morrowind *you* played, but the NPCs definitely didn't have any schedule or daily tasks and the shops did in fact stay open 24/7.
Todd Howard wishes he pioneered NPCs living their lives. I don't know who was first but Lord British with Ultima was on that scene way before his sweet little lies became a hit. (Okay, okay, I'll buy Skyrim again! Sheesh.)
I just spend 30 min on searching your channel on yt because my bf always watches your vids next to me in bed until I fall asleep maAan your voice is your soothing gn8
Back in these days of WoW the whole reason most of us would grind, do endgame and level WAS to be bad ass at PvP. The gear from endgame was the best and that is why is was awesome to get. It made you a badass in the world and was the reward for your grind. Then they introduced battle grounds and PvP gear and that was the end of the game for me. Before that the whole reason that you would get a 40-man raid group together and go get the best gear possible was so that you could show off in the world. Once battlegrounds hit there was no reason to do in-game content other than to get PVE gear. Lame and the end of WoW for me and my whole group of friends.
The next part in my patch-by-patch series! Since we did 2 of these in a row, next video will be a change of pace - will talk a bit about 8.3/current in general
MadSeasonShow what happen to asmonbald how come he hasn’t streamed
I dig the patch videos. Reminds me of the good ole days when vanilla was fresh, mysterious, and thrilling.
Good stuff. Awesome content as usual. Looking forward to seeing what you have to say about 8.3 as I've just given up on retail.

Whenever I hear that intro I know it's going to be a good video.
Wait, he does that ever- ohhhh I get it. ;)
That song and the videos contents are the perfect storm for nostalgia FFX and classic WoW!
@Ar D No he doesn't :)
I dont even play wow and I love your videos. They really take me into the game. Keep up the great work!
Happy we get more of this since I started Classic
Yeah my goal is to get through 1.12 by the time phase 6 comes out. Should be fun!
Runescape had a holiday event a couple years before WoW did but still wow most likely made it way more common
forfunofun I remember RuneScape had the party hat and Santa hat drops
WoW popularized quite a few things that it didn't invent.
Last night I watched again from patch 0.6-1.1 and now you put out this video,gj
I was pretty young back in the year 2000 but I was playing Everquest on my step-dads account back then. New Madseason and Hirumaredx videos back to back
Great channel!
Made my day tbh
Wow devs testing and playing there own game to improve it, I miss 2004
doesn't happen now, no xD
Bro. That ventrilo picture hit me hard

Love the addition of PPF's music
I adore your use of the FFX themes. You beautiful human being. Great content as always!
Oh hello AI, you look simply radiant today. You're glowing
Oh man the 64 goldeneye music in the background. Nice
loved it as always, a nice coffe in the morning with madseason vids. Best feeling ever :D
One thing we've enjoyed in the tactical shooter genre recently is a resurgence of games that don't hold your hand (Tarkov for example). Unfortunately the landscape is just so different for MMOs nowadays.
Great Video! I love your choice of music.
I like the music you use in the videos from other games. DKC2 has a great soundtrack.
I love to watch one of my favorite games with my favorite soundtrack. Thank you :P :D
I have the second version of the original WoW strategy guide by Brady Games. I enjoyed using that instead of the internet while leveling up this time around.
I think it was runescape that was doing festive events
Man I still have both those guides , FFVII and the wow guides !
that ff7 versus guide was godlike. read it about 500 times.
I actually still have my old FF7 and FF8 strategy guides.
Only played ff8 and I never had a guide
Well that also means that I actually never finished the game back then
Played it for many many months and loved it
Kinda funny how not beeing able to finish games was pretty normal back then , but these days it would be ridiculous
Materia keeper hard af
BOOYAH, upload welcomed for my lunch break. Ty madseason!
Bullcrap, radiant AI was first implemented in Gothic and the year was 2001
I think that was a joke. After all, the NPCs in WoW and other games don't really have complex AI, just a few scripts that don't really change.
Gothic isn't well known in US, so don't expect him to mention it.
BIG THUMPS UP for the Golden Eye 007 Music!!!!!
Music at 3:50 is Calm Before the Storm by the Super Guitar Bros in case anyone was wondering. Just wanted to post because I love it when he uses this song. It is awesome.
One of the best!
Shops don't close at night in Morrowind and npc's don't have schedules . Some npc's have small patrol areas, but none of them ever sleep or go to work in the game.
Still waiting for the evolution of wow: wotlk :)
Fantastic video again!
The final fantasy 10 music has me feeling a mighty need
Star Wars Galaxies actually did the holiday stuff before WoW. During Christmas, there was an event called Life Day which is something that the wookiees celebrate in Star Wars lore. You could get free gifts like paintings or other dwcorations for your house.

People with Lawbringer Armor-set be like, gaze upon my wonderful glory! The king of bananas!
Also the outrage when they changed the Paladin Tier 0 Hat from the one with wings to that nubby lightforge one
Do you have any videos not about wow? I love the way you present stuff
Is that Goldeneye 64 background music?? Nostalgia overload hnnnngggh
I can't wait for you to actually have the armor set you have in this video in classic, that'll be the day
Imagine how cool it would be if they make a patch for each remade expansion that includes past scraped content like extra dungeons, raids etc
Background music needs to be lowered by just a few db.
Ultima 7 The Black Gate had fully scheduled autonomous NPCs and a day/night cycle in 1992. Surprised it took a decade for it to become more normal
P.S. I enjoy the DKC soundtrack you use in your videos
Like you said, WoW probably made holiday events popular, but Wookiee Life Day debuted in 2003 for "Publish 5" on December 16th, while Winter Veil debuted December 14th, 2004....so, technically SWG did it first :P Great video though.
Great! Now I need to play some Super Mario 3.
Jagged Alliance 2 is from 1999 and it has some NPC patterns and day/night. Its still not 3D world tho.
Awesome vid like always. A question: how do I browse through old WoW forum? is there a way?
I think there are saved archives from old forums. Google it up :)
Asheron's Call had holiday events back in 99-00 when it first launched. Not sure about Everquest or Ultima Online. WoW actually pulled heavily from these games, as well as other MMO's that were out. One raid guarding lights hope and one flying in on offense. So much fun
FFXI did them a long time ago. 2004 for Christmas 2004 for Halloween. Looking like 2003/2004 for the holidays mate.
I believe that pso did holiday events back in 2000
Correct
How crazy would it be if WoW shops closed at night? Need reagents for the raid tonight? Better stock up before they close!
Thanks Mad!
Some people bring up the idea of a "hardcore" server with other similar rules. More xp required, harder tuned raids, more expensive training - I think that would fit pretty well if they ever decide to go down that route(they probably won't)
While great for immersion and a hardcore feel, It'd be terribly niche, with many people only being able to playin the evening due to work and such.
@@madseasonshow i read that in your voice
When you come back to classic and run an episode on 1.9 please pay special attention to the Arcane missiles change 😀😉
When are you going to do Evolution of World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King? I have been waiting forever. :( That video series is amazing.
God your voice is so unusually soothing.
Mad: "You can use guides now days to help your experience as opposed to back then"
Me: "Ha I had never used a guide and I never shall. I will either find it out for myself or I will miss it."
Morrowind townsfolk used to creep me out

Triple impressive since Stormreaver is also a PvP server.

Humn, MadSeasonShow and Hirumaredx posting vids on the same day? Must be Christmas =) Nice!

Can we get a video of you reading through the infamously terrible Bradygames guide?
Amazing ...gothic have npc day/night cycle in 2001...
And it was beautiful.
Everquest had "radiant" AI
I came here to kick around the Nostalgia to go play WoW but instead I gotta go start a new FFX play through.
i got a bag with 3 burritos in it... im str8 munching brooooo
Honestly. I somewhat think that not making the spirit stat improve the chance to break long CC's should be overturned and returned to the game. Not classic ofc.
Hey guys what's up man season hair
Blizzard predicted experimental hip hop group death grips
I don't know what version of Morrowind *you* played, but the NPCs definitely didn't have any schedule or daily tasks and the shops did in fact stay open 24/7.

More historyyyyy
Now I need to play smash bros 3
Why is the Princess so small now? :(
Thank you for talking about me in the video man!
Asmon was here
I'm a simple man.
I hear monotone voice, I press like.
You laid that on a little think didn't you?
Next time, don't make the pointless sucking up so obvious.
I miss Ventrillo.
is that the SMB3 theme?
Final fantasy backing music? 😊

Your transmog is so bad it’s become iconic
Giga because its not a tmog. that’s likely his original set from classic back in the day.
I like how u dont call him joker-D
Peace!
The Dark Portal wasnt a placeholder for instances, in the wow diary book they said they experminented with the location of the Dark Portal
Blizzard relies too much on Transmogrification nowadays, the BfA sets are pure ass with some exceptions
