A lot of the MBTI community out there is composed of people who are trying to find more about themselves. And when they feel they fit into a certain type, they will cling to it and make it part of their identity. Many are so eager to fit into a certain label that they start producing artificial behaviours instead of REALLY asking themselves how accurate are their self-images. We see this a lot in Facebook, discord etc. groups out there. Well done FJ, the final question of your video is really one of the most important and most underrated things about personality types...

An example I think can explain this is with INTPs. I think everybody knows that INTPs have the image of being chill, not caring about what others think. What I basically mean is, a good portion of INTPs, especially those new to MBTI, confine themselves to these labels so hard that they mimic the behaviors that are mentioned in memes. It kind of feels like if you don't do what other INTPs do similarly, then you aren't an INTP anymore. And it's kind of fearful losing that identity and belonging in a community. So, if you're an INTP who doesn't proofread social media posts for fun, but then saw a meme about it and a lot of INTPs saying in the comments "I feel called out", "this is so accurate it's actually creepy" or something, then you unconsciously do it, too, because other INTPs also do it and you feel like you have to relate to it, to be definitely an INTP and say "this is a such a mood" in the comments. But then, isn't that essentially caring about what other people think?
I think that realization got me out of the box I confined myself into. I discovered I was an INTP when the pandemic started. I had a lot of free time, so I spent the days laughing at memes. I think many INTPs have a similar story of thinking there is something wrong with them and then discovered MBTI and other fellow people who are similar. That happened to me, but then I started to use being an INTP as an excuse, instead of actually facing my problems and doing something with them.
Lastly, one thing I do that people in MBTI communities typically don't associate with having Ne as dominant or auxiliary is organizing folders and renaming files. It's very annoying guessing which file is which and opening and closing files countless times to find the file you're looking for.

I've studied Psychology, and we didn't spend an enormous amount of time talking about Myers-Briggs when discussing personality theory, but I do find it to be a very useful framework for navigating my interactions with other people. OCEAN may be the current favourite model, but IMO, it's just not as easily applied to everyday interactions.

i think a huge part of this MBTI being real or not discussion is Nature vs Nurture.
the cognitive functions all come with these implied traits that you can make an inference of. if you prefer this, you probably act like this
but there are always exceptions when it comes to that. you could have lived in an environment where some if your functions are more valued than others. you've had different experiences with them that can affect you so much, you don't fit the standard archetype of your MBTI. the functions explain your decision making and perceptions, but they don't explain what decisions you make and what you percieve

    ____________________________________
I think the research around personalities is really interesting, because people are clearly unique, but at the same time not THAT unique.
Like, people will claim that the OCEAN test is the only scientifically valid "personality test", but what makes it so valid?
I think it's really difficult to scientifically test such a complex thing as personality, but I also think there definitely is a "system" or "algorithm" to it.
Which is why I really like the model of the cognitive functions, because it can help explain a lot of different things about people - why they behave in a certain way when stressed - while at the same time using the same "puzzle pieces" for every type.
Basically my opinion is this: Personality exists. It's different for everyone, however there are people you "vibe" with and people you don't.
    Why is that?
I think personality has a lot to do with it, and especially how people see the world and what they value (judging and percieving). And so the most basic elements of a persons personality - what they prioritize - and the "building blocks" can be the same for people. However, your life, how you were raised and what you've experienced in your life does definitely affect you, which is why I think a lot of people dismiss this kind of theory. If you were to make a "test" that could find exactly what your personality was, you'd have the same number of "types" as the number of people on the planet; but that's not what's interesting.
To me the intersting bit is what people have in _common_ and what binds people together, and *WHY* they function the way they do.
I understand that a lot of people don't care about personality types. I've had a friend say that the tests are "useless" because they "Just tell you what you already know. I'm organized, and the test told me I'm organized, what does that give me? I aready know this".
But I also think it's dishonest or at least naïve to say that every single human is 100% unique, and that what "type" they are doesn't matter.
What I like about MBTI is that it gives me an understanding of people I didn't understand before, and it helps me see where I might fit into things. And - additionally - being an INFJ, I never felt I fit in anywhere when I was growing up, so knowing there are more people like me, and that it has a "name" has been really comforting to me. It's a cool thing to find people who you just "vibe" with, and especially if it's a rare occurrence, it's nice to know that there are places where you can "be yourself" and be fully understood.
It's obviously not good to get TOO into this either, and start stereotyping and dismissing people "because you're a basic sensor while I'm superior intuitive", but I also think it's dishonest or naïve to say that sort of thinking comes from "putting people in boxes".
People are going to divide themselves up in different groups no matter if there are 16 or 8 billion "types". But if you have a mature and curious approach to personalities, and what makes people different and how they "tick" I think MBTI is a good tool or jumping off point at least.
    End of Essay.

    • @eimiku3011
      @eimiku3011 2 роки тому +18

I agree with this, a lot of people don't care much about personality types as much as i do.
Personally for me, the reason why I'm interested in mbti so much is because many people don't show me who I am and what my personality is. They don't say "you're so funny!" or "You're so generous" mostly because I've never had a really close friend or just a friend that was more upfront. I've lived in a cold household too, not even my parents knew my actual personality.
When I learnt about the mbti test I was invested. Finally, something that can outline who I am and where I stand within society (or something like that). Each characteristic that was described of my mbti type made me reflect and realise that this who I am as a person and especially how I can grow. I learnt to appreciate myself. I am creative, ambitious and logical, even my weaknesses made me feel better since I knew who I am.
Till this day, I do things like analysing people to see what their mbti type is which I can be pretty good at. I have grown because of mbti, I'm working towards being more extroverted and I have definitely progressed in that. Now I'm happier as a person knowing who I am instead of growing into some kind of identity crisis, which is why I think personality tests are fun or interesting for people.
I do agree with not getting too into mbti to the point you let others down because of their "personality type." It's just outright disrespectful and rude, putting them into stereotypes and etc.
*TLDR/summary: I believe the mbti tests along with the other personality tests are for people who don't exactly know who they are, their strengths and their weaknesses or people who just do it for fun.*

The 'free' versions of the MBTI can be helpful as a high-level view of general temperament, and I think many of MBTI's detractors have not taken a full, paid, psychologist-reviewed test. Each of the eight dimensions is on a scale. As an example, I'd self-tested as an INTP all my life. Pro results... the INT part was right, but, basically: INTJudge Dredd! My results were a surprise to nobody I knew well.😆

The main reason I was into personality type was to make myself stronger. I was classified as an INTP-A. When I retook the test, I was classified as an INTJ-A. The truth is, I am a mixture of these two personalities. I do not relate to the lack of feeling in me, as described by these personality profile. I have feelings. I feel hurt, betrayed, silly. I want appreciation, if I see wrong I speak up, I debate. I am not an walking encyclopedia or a master strategist. Sometimes, I want to learn many things, sometimes I become a strategist. At the end, we behave the way we do because of our environment and our necessity. By that means, none of us are pure MBTI. We have all cognitive function and we can switch. I relate to ENTJ and INFP as well, since at times I behaved like them. But, I do better if I behave like INTJ-A and INTP-A mixture. As such, 16 personality is not accurate. For me, it is to find out what are my strength and my weakness. My goal was to increase my strength and learn to imitate the good quality of others. I never believe in impossibility, since it is all a matter of habit.

I think it’s also important to note the existence of mental disorders as I have yet to see anyone mention it. There’s many characteristics in some mbtis that sound like adhd for instance, but that doesn’t mean you have adhd. I’m an INFP and many of the traits are very similar to adhd and anxiety and tho I do actually have both along with it, it doesn’t necessarily mean another INFP will. An ISTJ could have severe depression and spiral out emotionally/mentally like an INFP could, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are an INFP. Point being, mental disorders can skew results.

The cognitive functions to me seem like such a logical system to describe how a brain could work on a high level. It just makes so much sense. There are two things that someone would need to do to interact with the world. Have models of the world, and make decisions for how to act based on those models. Some models are more concrete and based on real data (sensing), while others are more abstract and extrapolated from the data (intuition), even though I think most models are a combination of the two. These can be broken down even further based on whether they are top down or bottom up models. Top down starts with fuzzy generalized models and sharpens or narrows them down (Ne and Se), while bottom up builds and alters a single model from the details (Ni and Si). In terms of how people make decisions, they can make them through logical systems and deduction (thinking), or through intuitive value based judgements (feeling), although again most are a combination of the two. Finally, you can again break down each of these decision making functions into two types, creating rules for making decisions in certain types of situations (Ti and Fi), and making a decision based on the model of the specific situation you are in (Te and Fe). From there, mbti is just a system to figure out which functions you prefer to use, how you tend to use them, and how you can develop them.

    • @sourgrapes7482

it works perfectly in theory, but not in practice, where you have CLEAR enfps (ne-fi) using te-ni, people with strong fi and fe, or even people with balance ti and fi (I'm that last one). The system is lovely as a logical abstraction, but unfortunately it doesn't match up with reality. And if you have to change or ignore parts of yourself to fit in a system that's supposed to be **describing** you, then something is wrong with the system. Not the person

Everyone is able to use all the cognitive functions, mbti is about what functions you prefer to use. Maybe mbti isn't the best way to organize the cognitive functions, but that doesn't mean that they aren't fundamental and useful for thinking about your own thinking.
As for enneagram, the system seems flawed. Categorizing people based on some main emotion (why specifically fear anger and shame? why not sadness, or disgust?) and how you respond to that emotion, doesn't quite make sense to me, and the logic of the movement of growth and such appears arbitrary.

Wouldn't that make everyone not only able to do thinking/feeling, but also Fi and Ti at the same time (or close to the same time)? What about the aspirational fourth function? What happens is that MBTI in general is a self-declared survey, in addition to presenting subjective parameters. The problem is in the methodology not in the statistics per se.
Statistics is one of the most reliable sciences, if not the most to be honest. And it's not because it's my field, it's because it's really the mother of science (and philosophy is the father)

I would be more curious to know if the cognitive functions and/or the MBTI is scientifically valid - And if you, FJ, could do a video about the validity of MBTI / Jungian cognitive functions. For it is obvious to tell that every human being has his/her own individual personality traits, it is impossible to put people into only one archetypical stereotype rigidly because everyone posesses different personality traits, which make us handle and reflect upon various situations differently. I may not know on how much this topic has been researched about, but have you people (and you @Frank James as well) ever thought that all research was done by only ONE particular "neuroscientist" called Dr. Dario Nardi (if you google about the validity of cognitive functions) - which is somehow skeptical?

      Let me answer that.
You have to understand that cognitive functions aren't personality traits, and shouldn't be understood as such. Cognitive functions are the cog wheels, or the processes in your brain that make you perceive the world in certain way, and make decisions based on those perceptions. They are trying to answer the "Why?" and "How?" aspect of the personality. Cognitive functions aren't there to tell you that you should like coffee or dress in a certain way because you are some personality type, they are trying to answer why and how do you do the things you do.
BUT. At this point, cognitive functions and MBTI can be considered pseudoscience, and is comparable to astrology/horoscope. One problem is that, if you have done enough research, you would quickly realize that pretty much everyone has a different descriptions and interpretation of what cognitive functions/dichotomies are. Note that difference can be slight, but it is enough to cause confusion. So if you somehow managed to get 5 people who claim to know MBTI/cognitive functions in the same room, and asked them to type someone they would probably give you 5 different results. Even if four of them got it right and the fifth didn't, it is still problematic. The only difference between astrology and CF/MBTI is that astrology tells you what you should be based on your birth date and the positions of the planets at that particular date, CF/MBTI on other hand is based on observed behavior.
The thing is this can easily be solved if people managed to get their definitions straight and did tons of research until they get it right, but the problem is that almost nobody does this. They just make up their own system with own descriptions and interpretations, label it MBTI/cognitive functions and then go out and type people based on their own system and understanding or even sell their services for money (astrology much?). The worst thing about it is that all say it as "Jung said this" and it is as if nobody actually read his book.
Just look at your average description of an INTJ and INFJ and compare it to how Jung described introverted intuitives:
"The peculiar nature of introverted intuition, if it gains
the ascendency, produces a peculiar type of man: the mystical
dreamer and seer on the one hand, the artist and the crank on
the other. The artist might be regarded as the normal
representative of this type, which tends to confine itself to the
perceptive character of intuition. As a rule, the intuitive stops
at perception; perception is his main problem, and-in the
case of a creative artist-the shaping of his perception. But
the crank is content with a visionary idea by which he himself
is shaped and determined. Naturally the intensification of
intuition often results in an extraordinary aloofness of the
individual from tangible reality; he may even become a
complete enigma to his immediate circle. If he is an artist, he
reveals strange, far-off things in his art, shimmering in all
colours, at once portentous and banal, beautiful and
grotesque, sublime and whimsical. If not an artist, he is
frequently a misunderstood genius, a great man “gone
wrong,” a sort of wise simpleton, a figure for “psychological”
      novels."

@@symphony-of-destruction Thanks for the answer! But as you have mentioned astrology, people should know every topic that has to do with mysticism of any kind is objectively considered as invalid, because celestial bodies of any kind aren't capable of influencing personslities but fulfilling the laws of physics instead. People should be aware of physics, because every object of our universe motions with the help of kinetic energy and will always be motioned through gravitational forces and through the general law of relativity. Therefore, celestial objects like stars cannot stay in absolute positions, which cannot be able to be percieved as a so called "constellation". :)

@@peathekiller Well, the thing is thinking something doesn't work, and proving it doesn't are two different things. And with astrology, they found a couple of astrologists and had them read a natal chart, and they all gave different interpretations of that chart, not to mention that astrologers themselves can't agree upon what the astrology is and what it can predict. Exactly what you have with CF/MBTI, many that talk about it, but nobody agrees upon anything. There isn't strict criteria, or definitions, only subjective interpretations and systems.

MBTI is about preferences, so I don't know how scientific validity would be related. It would be like if I said I liked chocolate ice cream and someone else said they liked vanilla. Would you ask if that was "scientifically valid?" Would you be looking to prove that I actually do like chocolate ice cream?

I really like how you described it. Half the time I test as an INFP, half the time as an INFJ. After really doing the research into it and a lot of self-reflection, I really feel that I am an INFP. I’ve had the same struggle identifying my enneagram type as well, but that’s the thing - the test is just your starting point. Not everyone of the same type presents exactly the same.

As you have said Myers Briggs is more like a guide to help you understand yourself better. I think this one combined with your cognitive functions one plus some others like the strengths of each and the darkside of each personality ones, and how do the 16 personalities interact with the world really help clear things up. I recommend you to a lot of my friends.

Lol I took the test but still not 100% sure what type I am, it’s like no description really fits me.
I used to get INFJ when I was 14 and then again with 16 (and used to identify a lot with the INFJ description) but now after the pandemic I just get INTJ and then I read the INFJ description and I just don’t identify with that anymore!!
But idk if I am an INTJ either because although most of the description fits me, it mentions that INTJs don’t know how deal with others feelings, or perceiving others feelings, not good with emotionally connecting with people, and that is just not me at all.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHICH TYPE I AM?????????

I am an INTJ that does not identify with the stereotype description, most especially because I have had help from early on to develop the recognition, understanding and compassion for others feelings. The cognitive function stacks for INTJ and INFJ are actually quite similar. A well balanced, mature and healthy INTJ is actually capable of being very empathetic! (Mostly because our Ni and Fi can team up to run simulations of how we would feel in that other person's situation) The best thing to do is study the cognitive functions and check out other INTJ's on UA-cam like LiJo. Or those that discuss cognitive functions.

I can testify to the reality of the "weak" (I forget the technical term at the moment) factor--you know, the one at the end, or at the bottom in terms of the "stack---rising to the top in crisis. For me, an INFP, it's the Te function, and it rose to the top when it was a matter of sheer survival, and it turned, astoundingly, into a hallmark of mine, the thing that puts me "in demand," as it were. Yet I am perpetually aware that it's NOT what "comes naturally" or instinctively to me. I was vaguely aware of that even before encountering 16-p, but 16-p showed me WHY I was aware of it, and, paradoxically, now that I'm better in touch with why it was "counter-instinctive" to me AND why it has been so beneficial for me to develop it, I am once again better able to reconnect with and appreciate the older, "more me" functions too, recognizing their importance in the mix.

For me the 16-p test, and similar tests, comes out completely consistent. It is ALWAYS INFP-T. The good this has done me, at my ripe old age of nearly 64, is that it made sense in a new, in some respects healing, way out of a lot of my life's experience. It made me reevaluate the "whys" of things I did, reactions I had, intrinsic tendencies that, by comparison with others (usually with the more extroverted types), made me feel like I was lacking. Now, I wasn't exactly pining in a corner somewhere waiting for Sixteen Personalities, like a deus ex macchina, to come swooping in to save the day, and by the time one is past 60 a lot of those questions have sorted themselves out anyway (plus, the "proof of the pudding" has long been evident as to who was "lacking" and who was not), but, still, 16-p is a VERY nice bit of icing on the cake, a most welcome piece of life's puzzle. It would be a huge mistake, and quite adolescent, to take the INFP-T "revelation" like, "Oh, that's what I really am! Well, I'd better start acting like it!" But on a much deeper and subtler level it allows me to let things "ride" sometimes, if you know what I mean. I guess it's more like, "Okay, so I don't have to always pretend I'm NOT like that, then...." Having had enough of a chatter-filled party, for instance, doesn't make you a sociopath. And, for instance, the "T" part of the equation, which I know is something your videos don't major on, is also quite helpful to me. What it means is not, again, "Oh, I'm 'turbulent'! Well! I'd better start acting like that!" That would bs silly (and...as if I needed to start acting...). Instead, it helps me to recognize the "turbulence" is less a failing than an aspect, a built-in quality, that I can manage, even creatively channel. And, at times, just clock out of the game for a while until the "turbulence" passes. So, I'd say the chief benefit of "16-p" lies in its "permission" to simply recognize "This is what's there, the personality profile you came with on delivery, fresh out of the box; it's neither to your credit or blame--what's to your credit or blame is what you do with it...with the caveat that the one thing you can never be expected to do with it is obliterate it; that would be an inexcusable violence against yourself."
