    These kids were incredibly talented. What I liked about the Mickey Mouse Club was that it was a kid's program in variety show format.

    It's as if this happened yesterday since my memories of the MMC are so strong. I know Annette was the most popular but Darlene was by far the most talented. Younger generations can watch UA-cam videos that demonstrate how great Darlene was.

    • @lancerayburn4652
      @lancerayburn4652 Рік тому

      I totally agree. Annette had a natural warmth that appealed to so much of the audience. Darlene, on the other hand, had a natural talent that appealed to industry insiders who felt SHE would be the one to go on to a lucrative career. Unfortunately, her parents (especially her father, I've read) demanded equal airtime,etc. This caused resentment from the other mouseketeers, and - try as she might - Darlene was never able to capture the star so many felt she deserved. Later run-ins with the law would tarnish her image. It's a very sad story, much like the Supremes, except in this story, Florence Ballard becomes the much-loved star, and Diana Ross never gets a break. To add salt to the wound, Annette died on Darlene's birthday. Just sad.

    Back then if your kid’s said we’re going to watch the Mickey Mouse Club. Parent’s were assured it was good decent programming. Now you never know what they’re going to sneak in the show.

      Austin Klein ... I can relate to the running home bit ... the show had the ability to transport you to another world ... the modern versions of the original series lacked that magic eventhough the kids were talented

      No problem in Chula Vista. The show came on at five, and we got off school at three. I watched that show every day. I hope they come out with dvds for all the seasons. I have the bus set, but it only covers about a week.

    I'm actually amazed at how a daily show could keep coming up with these complicated routines. This ballet number should have taken a lot of practice and planning. Outstanding number.

      I'm guessing borderline child abuse had a lot to do with it. Did you know both Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were both prescribed amphetamines as children to keep up with the work demand?
      Sorry to spoil the mood.

    The MMC was an incredibly sophisticated children's TV show for 1955 . More so than many adult " prime time " programs at the time .

    I was 5-years old in 1955. It is simply amazing how talented those girls were. It was extremely competitive to be on that show. Then the MMC was on 5-nights in a row. How many television shows try to do that anymore?

      Some old 50's movies and TV shows have beatniks playing tom tom drums, and reciting poetry at the same time. There's an old Bob Denver (the chap from Gilligan's Island) scene in an old teenage movie where he recites a sort of rap upside down, with a face drawn on his chin.

    • @zuditaka

    This nowadays would count as promoting old-school obedient housewife propaganda. Another thing is that rock-and-roll and the guitar was something Mr. Disney struggled with embracing. At the time, there was a craze which was going to make the Mickey Mouse Club shorter lived than Walt wanted. He liked jazz a whole lot, but the new craze which integrated jazz with country music was something he struggled with too much.
