  • The 5 Toughest Watches In The World - Federico Talks Watches
    In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk about what I think are 5 of the toughest luxury watches ever made. The best mechanical luxury watches for the end of the world. Brands like Rolex, breitling, Omega and many more make an appearance. Tough watches that will definitely take a beating. Let me know what you guys think in the comments section below.

    A fun video. But let's face it, Casio has a whole line of g shock watches for the end of the world.

      The end of the world will most likely occur with an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse-massive solar flare) in which case ANYTHING electrical with a chip is dead forever.

      I will say, in my career I have worked at sea, in Antarctica and in offshore oil and gas. I have worked with military clearance divers and with various other military types for who dependability and capability to perform in extreme conditions is everything for their equipment. And the G Shock family was the watch of choice in all of those applications.

    • @JerehmiaBoaz
      @JerehmiaBoaz 6 років тому +1

      G-Shock's claim to fame is that the module (the movement) will keep running no matter what you throw at the watch, not that the case will survive the abuse. I broke a G-Shock at the lug/strap attachment during a fall, but Casio refused to repair the damage under warranty because the module was still functioning, no matter I couldn't attach the watch to my wrist any more.

    For toughness, you can examine toughness by examining low maintenance movements, i.e. strong material properties, quality bearings, low friction of moving parts. High power reserve solar watches need be added to the convo, since no sun = game over.

    Federico, another great video! Your charisma is magnetic! Thanks for the interesting topic, what is Your top5 sturdy movements? I’m asking, because the producer of one of the toughest watches - Sinn uses mostly ETA, combining with very robust cases. Does that mean, that there is no sense creating “inhouse” since the best in terms of robustness is already created? And what do You think of Damasco? They are micro, independent and nobody talks of them... looking forward🤝

    If one is on an uninhabited island, the best choice would be G-Shock MRG-G1000B-1A.
    Shockproof, waterproof, light titanium but scratch proof, solar powered, adjusted by GPS thus always precise. And besides it’s still a truly luxury watch. Both in terms of assembly and finishing and in terms of the pricing (3000 USD).

    I work with a Casio branch and I had the opportunity to visit their headquarters at Hatagaya, Tokyo, they have at their show room a testing material which their designed for GSHOCKs, they provide you with eggs, and you can throw them against this material, you can drop the eggs at any altitude and it wont break, it is a remarkable material which they use to protect the GSHOCKs mechanism.

    Any Sinn dive watch in submarine steel (non-corrosive) such as the U-1 or the U-2. These have high shock protection and are anti-magnetic. The are also easy on the wallet and have ETA or Selita movements that are upgraded by Sinn and have proprietary oils that last a long time.

    i wear my Omega speedmaster grey side of the Moon every single day to work, which is in a skilled trade where I'm always cutting, drilling, filing, etc. the ceramic case has taken a beating - being hit against light poles while walking by, vibrations, metal dust, etc etc etc, and it still looks 100% brand new, with no marks at all.
    it might not have the water resistance, but this ceramic case is brutally tough.

    Great watches. Great idea. However, I think they are more "durable" as opposed "tough." I don't think any of the time pieces would survive a truck or a car driving over them. Now that is tough. Though I must admit I did like you analogy of dumping a bucket of sand on them. Now that was cute))))

  • @moriazi1
    @moriazi1 6 років тому +1

    Personally I dont think toughness equals to diver / depth rating. It should be tthe ability to take shock resistance. Maybe, one test should be puting the watch onto the wrist of drummer. If after a concert, the watch still maintains a good timing, maybe its a tough mechnical watch.

    First of all thank you very much! thank you for considering our requests and for teaching us new interesting things. that said, relatively to your list, it confirm what I thought: when people think about "toughness" they think about diver watches. I'm very interested in "shock absorber movements" (is it correct in english?) and I didn't know the glashutte. but it's a diver watch. do not misunderstand me, I love diver watches, I have many and I'm waiting for 2018 seamester 300 professional (blu dial). but I'm really interested in tough watches designed not for water. for the moment I can only think about the Rolex Explorer II which has the PARAFLEX system. I don't know any others. I would like to learn more about this topic. thank you very much again, take care and greetings from Italy!

    @Federico I would nominate the I.N.O.X. Mechanical. I don't have the expertise to assess the 2824-2 ETA movement. I know it's reliable, of course. But I don't know if it would stand up to an end-of-the-world scenario. While it comes with a bracelet, you can get it on something they call a 'wood' strap as well.

  • @mandinigunasekara9312
    @mandinigunasekara9312 6 років тому

    Water resistance is no proper indication of toughness. For all practical purposes, 200m water resistance is as good as any higher rating. But shock resistance is far more important in day to day use. “Non” of the luxury watches from “any” brand can impress in this area. Magnetic resistance is an over emphasized requirement, important to a very small minority of users involved in work related to engineering.

    Certainly not a wise choice to head into an apocalypse with a mechanical watch. I had an Oris Aquis I was fitting a rubber strap to when I gave a case pin a tap with a rubber mullet to get it in the whole and the watch started losing time there after. I sent it to Oris and they told me it had been subjected to high impact. Could not believe it. Cost me $900 to fix. What a piece of garbage. I had a string of Swiss mechanical watches and now find myself transitioning to casio and seiko solar models. That's what I'm taking to world's end. I take my swiss pieces to the office or out for coffee, that's all they are good for. Don't kid yourself. You're not wearing the Rolex to do the gardening, build the cubby house, mountain bike riding or even diving ironically. No you're using the Gshock for all that aren't you?

      I have a Sinn EZM 10 and have taken that some pretty extreme places from the Artic Circle to Marrakech and dropped it in good knows what multiple times - would go toe to toe with many of these watches easily as indeed would I suspect many Sinns. So yes seems a big oversight to have no Sinns on this list.

      Brian, what about the clasp construction and the movements with silicone hairsprings and extended power reserves... All the tech none of the sinns have?

    I think the toughest watch bar none would be one of the Five Rolex Deep Sea Challenger watches proofed to 15,000 Meters. Although you may have to wear it on a rather larger wrist as it’s 51.4mm case and 28.5mm thickness is rather large. 😀
    Back to reality....I Fully agree on the DSSD (126660 ver), I’d add the Sinn UX Hydro and INOX as The Ubran Gentry pointed out. They look impressive, for non mechanical.

    A Damasko for me, closely followed by a Sinn. Super tough German engineering in super tough Steel too.

    No Sinn or Damasko? Both companies make extremely robust, resilient watches.

    I don't think maybe one quartz but the problem of quartzis they run out of battery and you're not gonna be able to find a battery so mechanical is definitely the way to go you know seiko's have lasted 20 years without a service I enjoy all of your choices and I'd have to say the panerai in s My Favorite I just got a real thing for pan here lately..great video brother 👍👍👍

    I would grab my G-Shock. That said, given the scenario Federico presents, I would select the Omega Seamaster
    Planet Ocean 600M 39.5 MM diameter. I would select the steel case on a steel bracelet (Reference Number 215.30.40.20.03.001). I looked at five criteria before deciding on a zombie apocalypse mechanical luxury watch: 1. shock resistance? Yes - Incabloc, 2. Water resistance? Yes, 600M, with a helium escape valve - your crystal won't pop out if you are on a jet at altitude that undergoes cabin depressurization. 3. Anti-Magnetic? Yes, up to 15,000 Gauss. 4. Is it Small? Yes. There is a reason that military field watches tend to be on the small side - they are lightweight, unobtrusive, don't get stuck on clothes and equipment, and are less likely to be damaged by bumping into things. I am going to arbitrarily call anything under 40 MM in diameter "small". 5.Is it well made? Yes.
