Today we’re looking at the extremely popular Olympus PEN E-PL6 Digital Camera. This is an entry-level micro four-thirds camera that packs a whole lot of features that you wouldn’t expect to see at this price point. Let’s take a closer look.
Right at the outset, you’ll notice that the Olympus PEN E-PL6 is an extremely compact camera. And just to give you an idea of how compact, here’s how it compares to the iPhone 6S. The Olympus E-PL6 has an all metal construction, which gives it a satisfying, solid feel in the hand and its easy to use with even one hand. The Olympus PEN E-PL6 is available in two standard kits: one with just the 14-42mm kit lens and another one with the 14-42mm lens and an extra 40-150mm zoom lens. I’ll put links to both versions in the description below, so feel free to check that out. The 14-42mm lens that we’re testing today, has a compact folding design that lets the lens shorten and lock away when the camera is not in use. When you need to use the Olympus E-PL6, unlock the lens by pressing the unlock button and the lens extends to a usable length. Behind this lens is a 16MP micro four thirds sensor that is about 4 times the size of the sensor on a point and shoot or smartphone. Better sensor size usually equals better photos and videos. And we’ll see in a minute how the E-PL6 performs.
The bottom, has the battery compartment with a full size SD card slot. And the ¼-20 tripod mount is right next to it. And on the right hand edge, beneath a small cover, are a micro usb port to connect the Olympus PEN E-PL6 to a computer and a micro hdmi port to connect the camera to a TV.
Now the charger that comes with both kits is a standalone battery charger that’s really convenient. It allows you to pop out, replace and charge depleted batteries. Much better than the in-camera charging you’ll see on other entry-level cameras. Spare batteries are readily available, and I’ll leave links to some spare batteries below. It takes photos in the JPEG and RAW formats and the autofocus on the Olympus PEN E-PL6 is superb. Locks focus accurately and quickly, each time- absolutely no issues keeping up. Very impressive for a camera at this price. The 16MP photos were also pretty impressive. The pictures were sharp and well-exposed. The color reproduction was pretty accurate and you could get pictures with a shallow depth of field and nice, soft bokeh in the background, as you can see in these images. These are all JPEG photos that were not edited and were taken with the OLympus PEN E-PL6 in the intelligent Auto Mode- the mode that most beginners will probably use first. Very impressive quality and certainly much better quality than most smartphones and point and shoot cameras. The low light performance is also decent and pretty usable, as you can see here. When it comes to video, the quality is pretty decent. The colors are well-reproduced and the overall aesthetic of the video is pretty good. It’s certainly not the sharpest video on the planet. But then again, this isn’t the most expensive camera on the market. Definitely performs pretty well, considering its price and it should work well for most vloggers, youtube creators and budding filmmakers. I’ll leave a link to this camera below, so you can check it out.
So should you buy this camera. If you’ve outgrown your smartphone, are looking for better photo and video quality and you’re on a tight budget, it’s hard to find a better camera at this price. The Olympus E-PL6 performs really well; its easy to use, locks focus quickly and accurately and produces really nice images. Its also great as a first camera for UA-camrs, Vloggers and budding film makers. I definitely recommend this camera. If you own this camera, tell us what you think, in the comments below. - Наука та технологія
Bought a used PEN e-PL6 in 2023. Fun and easy to use. Paired with a Lumix lens to shoot B&W with great results. The more I use it, the more I like it.
Thank you for making this review! It showed all the information I needed for this camera!

Thank you!
I've owned this camera and I love it. It easy to carry and the image quality is great. Besides taking pix, I use it for my UA-cam videos and the quality is decent but the only negative is that you can hear the autofocus while recording and there is no easy way to connect an external microphone (they do offer an expensive microphone kit that goes over the hotshoe).
Rafael Soto just put some music in the background and it wont be that niticable atleast that is what most youtubers do with the canon g7x
Thanks for the review. I have a question. Is it have Wi-Fi connection ?
I bought a used one from a photo store and I'm very happy with the quality and the features! But the store offered only a 3-month guarantee. So far all buttons are ok, the lens turns, flash ok. Photographs excellent. Anyone knows what should I pay attention to as a newbie in that used camera? I want to discover if there are any hidden flaws before the expiration. Thanks!
Thanks for your nice videos
I have same camera but now shutter is getting locked
I don’t know why?
Pleas help me
Great review, however I didn’t find the differences with the pl5
Using the E-PL6 for me is much better feeling than use my E-M10 II. But the E-PL6 is affected by shutter shock, so I use it's bigger brother - that has silent shutter, and a normal shutter that isn't as much "hard". My dream is an E-PL6 with the shutter mechanism of the Lumix GX85.
is it good for photos and better rlfrom rebel t6?
Can i ask about the stability for video?? Is it average or low??
I think the bokeh had to do with being in macro closeup range. Does it still render beautiful bokeh when the subject is at 1+ meter?
how to adjust shutter speed?
...Excellent review.........;--)......
+billy fatbowe Thank you!
I am planning to get the 2 lens kit. I was not planning to buy a camera yet, but someone is selling one for $175.
Thank you for this excellent review! I started with a EPL2, would you happen to know of the lens are interchangeable with this model? I was sorry to see that epl6 doesn't have the pop up flash like in my epl2 version.
Glad it helped you!
are the lens that come with camera compatible with say the sony a5000?
+skyforce95 No, this is only compatible with micro four thirds cameras.
How to use the wifi/phone transfer from camera function? Do you need air wifi memory card? Or does it have it function pre-installed?
TheKkd123 it doesmt have the function pre-installed. U have to buy the wifi memory card.
I just bought the EPL6 and am loving it. The pictures and videos are so clear and vivid colors, even in low light. But I find that the camera starts to feel hot a little after about 10 mins in use. Is this normal?
+Pal Khera That's not very normal. If the camera is within its return or warranty period, I would recommend asking for a replacement.
Oh dear, really? Ok thanks for the information.
How does it fare compared to the Sony DSCWX350? I'm getting a camera for vlogs and youtube videos and I'm currently disputing between the two.
+Misael Hilario My vote goes for the E-PL6, purely due to bigger sensor size.
Is there a focus stacking or BKT feature?
I don’t believe there is.
Possibly a stupid question ..But I own a Olympus E510 with zuiko lenses.. Would I be able to use these with this camera ..If not could you recommend another olympus I can use it with ..thanks
This camera should work with the Zuiko lenses, since both cameras are micro four thirds sensor cameras.
does this camera have an audio jack? thanks!
No
This looks like an awesome camera. But on amazon the base with the 14mm lense is now 399! Does anyone know if the price will go down?
One thing you can do is to scour craigslist, although that is less effective if you don't live in a major population center. I am planning to buy one of these today (the 2 lens kit) and the guy is asking for $175.
Does it include a microphone port?
+Liel Bouskila No it doesn't
As compared to EPL7 , is the photo&equality the same ? What's the other difference ? :)
+Jan I really can't say how it compares to the EPL7. I haven't tested that camera
Jan epl 7 got wifi feature built into it. And wider lens for selfies.
Hello!
I want to *shoot video in a room which is not very lit. Recording TV display* to capture realtime benchmark footage among other things. DSLR have big lenss but i've read that they can lack motion capture.
Quoted:
''Video. On DSLRs it is simply 'bad' for most users. The problem is
that while most DSLRs focus lighting fast in still images they are bad
at video autofocus. The AF for mirrorless in video is quite good. It will easily
track movement without every other second being out of focus (like a
DSLR will). Video DSLR = poor, Mirrorless = Excellent.''
What is your opinion on this matter?
Also, what would you pick between these:
- Olympus PEN E-PL6
- Canon PowerShot SX720 HS
- Sony DSC-HX300
- Canon S120
- Canon EOD 1300D
- Nikon D3300
Some are compact, mirrorless and DSLR. They are all in 300-380€ budget.
i don't need Wifi and such candies, the better the video quality, the better for me.
Thanks!
+Poké Man For your use, I would recommend the Nikon D3300, due its better low-light performance.
Does the camera have a view finder?
+Motion Master No, it doesn't come with one. However, you can use the Olympus VF3 Add-on viewfinder: amzn.to/1VTXiLk
Blue background available in olympus
Can you use Canon lens to this camera?
No, this uses a micro 4/3 mount.
How is the sound quality when recording videos?
+Lud Tv Pretty decent. Very comparable to other mirrorless cameras. Now if you want better audio quality, you can use an external recorder like this one: ua-cam.com/video/4TfPqGzsIk4/v-deo.html
+ReviewLamp.com Alright, thanks! One more question.. Is it possible to use an external microphone attached to it?
Yes you can. You will need an adapter like this one: amzn.to/24yCWMG
How do you use the adapter?
It locks into the port near the hotshoe adapter on the rear face of the camera.
has anyone compared this to the E PL7 - is it worth the extra money ?
The biggest addition to the E-Pl7 seems to be WiFi. It all really depends on what you plan to use it for?
i got problem sir,my sensor was closed suddenly by kinda carbon paper in front of the sensor,, Please help me,,
+Front Bin Taufiq Closed by carbon paper? How did that happen?
It just closed the sensor when i took picture,,is this thing named Shutter?

Gostei mas fala muito rápido, precisei diminuí a velocidade 😅😊
All I heard was "it's pretty good, it's pretty decent and it works pretty well"
+Bryan McMillin lol ok thanks :-)
Which is better - E-PL6 or SONY A5000?
+Nadya Kuchumbova Both are good cameras. What do you plan to use it for? Video or photos?
+ReviewLamp.com first of all thank you for taking time to answer me :) So, about the cameras, i need it to take pictures with it, onse that i'm taking with my phone. I don't own DSLR, it too big to carry around, and the Olympus or the Sony are perfect match. Basically i i'm more for the Olympus because of the touch screen, it's not far from operating my phone, but what i have read the Sony makes better pictures, hence to 20mp. And you have tried both, what do you recomend, does the quality of the Sony pictures far overcome the Olympus ones?
I can't say that the Sony is a lot better than the Olympus. However, in cases such as low light, the Sony performs slightly better. As I said, they're both very good cameras. You can't go wrong with either.
ok, thank you :)
Do you think the photo and video quality of this camera is better than an iPhone 6?
+SKBEEKER Yes, I would certainly say it's better, thanks to the bigger sensor on this camera.
of course
its better
I would be amazed if it wasn't in a whole different league than any cell phone camera.
Tired of smooth bokeh, its getting super boring. As boring as rap music...
