    This week I’m taking the Olympus E-P5 out on an early photowalk in the dunes nearby where I live. Out of all the PEN’s, the E-P5 might very well be my favorite. And paired with the tiny Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens, it makes for one hell of a compact walkaround setup.

      Hey there! Thank you so much for making all these videos with and about Olympus cameras! It's so hard to find recent ones on youtube. I love these photos and your photography in general. I find it very inspiring, and very peaceful somehow 🙂
      I was wondering, since I haven't owned Olympus cameras yet: are those beautiful colors mostly there in camera as you take the pictures or do you have to do a lot of work in post for them? Would the Jpegs SOOC be as beautiful?
      I would be thankful for a reply 😊
      Please continue your good work!

      @@SIQmai hi! thanks for your kind words! I’m quite pleased with Olympus colors SOOC, but I do shoot in RAW and post process all of my photos in lightroom too. Also important to note is that I usually shoot at sunrise (and sometimes at sunset), I like the light and colors best then and most of the mood I get in my photos is because of that; I only enhance it in post. I don’t shoot in JPEG SOOC a lot. Sometimes with my PEN-F with e color profiles (which are very nice! the newer E-P7 has those too), and sometimes with an old Olympus XZ-1 compact camera, that has really nice jpg’s too (it has a kodak ccd sensor).

    I've had several cameras with silk screen shutters in the past, but none as satisfying to hear as the E-P5. Just a sexy camera.

    Great video! Love the photos and the approach. I need more coastline like this in my life, it's my favorite place to be with a camera but it's a ~2hr drive for me. I love my EP1 still and I don't even have to think twice about choosing this lens. It's a great pairing with with it, and with any m43 camera, really. On the plus side, even without the Raynox, it's still got fairly close focus on it's own.

    I think I really wanted an EP-5 back in the day when they sold the entire package with the viewfinder and 2 lenses and etc. But I couldn't back in the day. It was too expensive for me. Years later, I bought a E-PL2 and fell in love with Micro 4/3. My cousin always had a Panasonic GF-2, I was always liked the size. But Olympus' colours are amazing. Can't really go wrong.

    After years of owning both the Pen-F and E-P5, I've grown to understand that the overall handling, and aesthetics on the E-P5 are just superior. I have the additional VF-4 viewfinder and the overall experience on that is so much better than the finder in the Pen-F. The extra dials and controls on the Pen-F body, while it looks great aesthetically, does detract a bit from the camera holding experience. For years I used the Pen-F as my main camera, and now also own the OM-1 (incredible ergonomics). Now going back to the E-P5 recently I prefer it far more...it hurt to admit to myself that it's better than the Pen-F? 😭

    • @claytonluke81
      @claytonluke81 9 місяців тому

      Definitely. 16mp is plenty as long as you don't need large prints. They've held their value quite a bit compared to some of the others that came after. I recently picked up the first omd em1 for less than $300 on MPB. Both cameras are well loved to this day. You also have the E-Pl cameras. They're more of a "lite" version. Then you have the OMD. All the early models can be had for a low price. I guess it just depends on the style of camera you like visually, what you want to shoot and cost. Good luck. @@henrylee8510

    I got the regular black body version and white body version. The white finish is a piece of art, in my opinion the most beautiful camera they made in Micro Four Thirds, on par with the Pen F in my opinion. I am still waiting for a premium white version to pop up on Ebay in mint condition to add to my collection. Only the white version really looks good with the wooden grip.
    Beautiful images, I've lived in The Hague close to the dunes for a short time as a child, I fondly look back to that time there. (Is there still a massive amount of dog shit everywhere you step on the walking paths in the dunes though?).

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  Рік тому +1

      I’ve got the regular black version too, and had been on the look with this white one with wooden grip for a while. They’re hard to find, I rarely see any offered. I did get lucky when this one popped up on ebay, it’s in absolute mint condition. Hopefully you’ll be able to find as well!
      As for dog shit on the dunes; I don’t think it’s too bad these days. It’s not something I notice much anyway.

      Thanks! I do still like the E-P3, it’s a lot like the original E-P1 and the E-P2 in appearance, but upgraded under the hood. It’s the first PEN with a touch screen and quite a bit better in performance than the E-P2 and E-P3. If you can find one for a good price, then yes absolutely. Fun and beautiful camera!

    Thank you for all your videos... I find it interesting that of all your PEN camera reviews (where you titled it "would I buy it again?"), you chose to title the E-P5 "My favorite PEN?" ... Thanks in part to your reviews I have a gently-used E-P5 on its way to me. Excited! (EDIT: I have experience with Panasonic bodies but not Olympus... what's your favorite color profile to shoot in with the E-P5, usually?)

    Great video! Last year on the 20th of June I also got up at 5 o clock or so and did a bike tour around where I live. So yeah I can really attest how this is quite a magical experience with the light, the birds the humidity that’s still around and the little amount of people that are out and about.
    As for the camera: I’m interested in getting my first real camera and like the appeal of the pen series. :)
    So is the ep5 your favorite Pen even compared to the pen F?

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! As for the E-P5, I would say it is my favorite PEN as an allround camera and in terms of looks an feel of the camera. I also use the E-P7 a lot these day, specifically for street photography. It’s so light and responsive and with it electronic/silent shutter it is perfect for that type of photography. The PEN-F is a beautiful camera but it’s just not really for me I think. With all its bells and whistles and fully articulating screen it feels more like a replacement of an OMD body while its build and ergonomics don’t make it very suitable for that kind of photography to me. I prefer the modest PENs :).

    • @walthefl
      @walthefl 5 місяців тому

      @@bartjanverhoef thanks 🙏 . Yeah it probably also comes to personal preference. Don’t know, but I’m somehow totally drawn to the pen F. :)
      So I think eventually it’s gonna be that one for me.
      Currently I started using my family’s old compact digital camera again and have lots of fun with it.
      It’s a canon s110 and probably worth next to nothing but it let’s me try out so much more and is much more fun than taking photos with a smartphone… :)

    Why was all photos with the macro add so unsharp. most pictures were actually unsharp. I saw that you almost always used aperture 1,7 so the macro shots had a super short depht of field. With your shutter time 1/500 you could have dropped it to 1/125 and insted used a f-stop of 3,5 or 4 to get more of your subject in focus. Just my thoughts...

    I enjoyed this video. I don't care much about specs so much these days. One has to work hard to make a bad photo because modern cameras are so good. The feel of a camera has become more important for me👩🏼‍🦲because I am more likely to take it out with me. I may get🎉 one of these little gems for exactly that reason.
