- Have you ever wanted to try a base bump but you weren’t sure what to look for or were afraid it would pull warmth?
So often (especially when we first try base bumps) it can be a really intimidating technique so we just don’t do it at all or we are so nervous about it pulling warm that we don’t let it actually bump the base before we rinse it out. It can definitely be a technique that takes practice, but this technique will help you remain calm, cool, and collected!
In this video I break down:
✨ When you want to use a base bump.
✨ My secret formula that I ONLY use for basebumps
✨ What you need to look for so your base doesn’t pull warm
✨ How adding a base bump will not only tone blonde highlights on darker hair but also tone them.
This video is a little different than my other videos so if you liked this video, let me know in the comments below!

Love the more in depth (focused) tips. Thank you
Thanks os much for the feedback!
Loved this in depth on a single technique video!. exactly the valuable info I was looking for. TY!
Great technique! Thx for sharing the formula.
I'm so happy to hear you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
Love seeing your full explanations
Yeah I don’t mind the shorter video it helps with narrowing in on a technique I’m looking for
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
Your amazing! I love all your videos😍Thank you for sharing your secret formula! Life saver!

I'm thrilled to hear you loved this! Thanks for watching.
Great vid! Excited to try this method!
I love your videos! I like the more detailed videos with models from start to finish. I just started watching your videos like 2 weeks ago. You are very informative and easy to listen to.
I started working with the line redken and I want to understand their color line. I don’t know if it matters what color line you use. Is it all the same? When it comes to formulation?
What do you use in your sink? Headrest?
Love Love love this ❤
Love this! Do you use a toner at all or just the purple shampoo after the base bump?
This video it awesome!! You can only use the Goldwell Top Chic 10P and that would work if you a different color line?
Thanks was very nice Color and u teach very very good
So, I have done hair for 15 years and I’ve used a dozen or more color lines. Goldwell that different than the rest or could the same formula in another line achieve the same result? Great quality video and love the info. ❤️
It's my go-to but everyone has preferences! Thanks for watching
That is gorgeous
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this! Thanks for watching.
How do you choose what to choose for ‘base bump’ what’s the actual product called, a color?
Love this video!!!
I'm thrilled you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
Love this ❤ Ty
Hi what will you charge for it thank you love you thx helping me make a better living
What you charge totally depends on your location and demand. I made a video on how to figure out what to charge here: ua-cam.com/video/77cvWfJVA64/v-deo.html
Thank you
What if I cannot purchase Goldwell? What else can I use? What do you recommend?
This looks great...but what happened to the "no warmth" part? Genuinely curious.
What do you mean? There's no warmth
@@Alexandrin144 Umm...even she says "lift it til you see a little warmth"...which means there's warmth.
Where did you get see through salon sprayer
What about skp 10-19 ?
Yes!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
is the ratio 1:1?
Love this!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
Do you do the 10 or 15 2 to 1 with the color or 1/1?
I've have been doing this for 2 decades.
Can you please tell me where you got the black thing that’s sticking in the sink so that the clients head is held ?! Please thank you 😊
It's part of the sink
It’s a neck cushion you can purchase. I believe it runs around $100.
Lison Larose if im not mistaken, I think on her Instagram she posted that this was an avant- backwash system from Minerva beauty - it come with the sink but you can also buy it separately for $15 through their website
Does it work in any shampoo bowl?
Would it make a difference if I did this base bump first and do the highlights after?
I am in no way hair professional and you probably shouldn't listen to my advice but in my opinion it makes more sense to do it after highlighting your hair bc you'll be toning ur new highlights and base bump at the same time
Loved it!!
I'm thrilled you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
Just use 5 vol and let it sit
Yes...love when people get straight to the point
I'm thrilled you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
Would you please do videos start to finish thank you❤
Yes, the shorter format is great! I can't always squeeze in a longer one :)
Thanks so much for the feedback! That makes me happy to hear. Thanks for watching!
YESSSS THIS TYPE OF VIDEO IS EVERYTHING
That makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for letting me know.
I like it all! But I’m so eager to see a consultation video! I want to see how you engage with the client. What questions you ask and why you pick the colors you do along with the technique!!! Much love 💖💖💖💖
I'll keep that in mind for a future video. Thanks for watching!
i really appreciate this deeper dive!! more of this please! I really would love to become a better stylist over time!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
Your styling of her natural texture is perfect! Can you do a video on that?
I'll keep that in mind for a future video! Thanks for watching 💛
I love using Loreal Professionnel DiaRichesse in clear or 9.01 or 9.02 or some combination of those shades with 9 or 15 vol. I find using an alkaline, non ammoniated color gives the cleanest results and doesn’t seem to expose too much warmth.
Thanks for watching!
My stylist won't do this on me because she claims then I'll have 3 diff colors in my hair with regrowth, when my natural base starts showing again. Thoughts?
Michelle Lefevre I tell my clients that their regrowth wont be as noticeable as fast because when your hair grows out your darker natural color will be next to the slightly lighter base bump instead of only up against those light hilights! But as always, if you like what your stylist does, always go by her recommendations. If she gives you good advice about other things, she would be the one to recommend what is best for your hair!! The rest of us aren’t there and we haven’t worked with your hair before--so maybe there is a reason your stylist doesn’t like the looks of this on you!
for me this made my regrowth less noticable, it blends more, and I really don't mind that 3 colors
Michelle Lefevre, you will have three colors, and the base bump will ultimately leave color bands. The bands will be more visible if the base is lifted too much, and less if the base is barely lifted. I'm speaking as a certified master hair colorist, former color educator for a major company, and a stylist/salon owner with decades of experience.
What she did in this video is beautiful, as is all of her work that I've seen.
Results vary on different hair types.
If their hair is a natural level 4 would you recommend doing the base bump on damp or dry hair? And would you do it before the bayalage application or after at the bowl?
Dry hair for sure
I love using 10n in matrix Demi colors w/ 10vol for base bumps. Game changer for clients who have really dark roots and want super light highs.
Thanks for watching!
kimmy0868 I use matrix’s all so I would like to see your hair color after highlights Patty
Lol I just posted asking what to use in matrix 😂. Thank you!
I love mixing P's and V's
Just curious how you do this without getting hot roots? Why not just give them a slight shadow root to blend?
I love these kinds of videos, thank you for sharing your tips . You have an amazing personality and such a talented hair dresser.
Thank you so much for letting me know you liked this type of video! I appreciate it!
I’ve been doing this for years ,called it (breaking the base)-- good job 👍😁🥳
Thanks for watching!
I am new hairdresser, your videos are very helpful ....thank u so much
I'm so happy to hear they have been helpful. Thanks so much for watching!
I like base bump videos on level 5 ish... Most base bumps seem to be on level 6/7/8 who barely need it. I'm about a 5 and pull warm every time.. Thanks, good video. 🇮🇪
I love allll your vids but I really enjoyed the Short- Specific... maybe that would be the case with already licensed Cosmetologists? But yeah! GoldWell is spendy even at our cost but i will try! I’ve tried some diff base bumps & yeahhh... not always “exactly “ that I was expecting. Thanks for your help!☮️💟
I'm so happy to hear you loved this video. Thanks so much for watching!
I quite liked this video and the base bump was awesome.
Those highlights where spectacular ♥️
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
yes i love this alot, please do more. However please keep making the usual video bc we love them too.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
Thank you for this deep dive!! I love seeing start to finish BUT you have lots of those already too!! this was super quick and helpful, I’d love to see more of these!!
I'm so glad you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
What is the P in 10P ? Pearl? Is that like a violet ash or blue?
Pearl is violet and blue to control yellow and orange undertones.
Brooke Saunders At a level 10, it’s not controlling any orange, and barely yellow.
DeathtotheAshes that was my thought.
I’ll have to try this!! I’ve worked with Schwarzkopf pretty much my entire career so my go to base bump from SKP was (and still is) the Blondme T-Ice and T-Steel Blue toners with 20vol for 5 mins. The majority of it was T-Ice with a dash of steel depending on how light or dark their natural base is. But now I work at a Goldwell salon and don’t enjoy how blonde their NuBlonde base breaking formula. So I’ll have to try this!
I hope you love it! Thanks for watching.
Yes I love the technique videos. This was a different way of doing this for me-I’ve always done the base bump and then highlited, but this saves a lot of time! Thanks!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this! Thanks so much for watching.
YES PLEASE KEEP TEACHING US IN DEPTH! I’m paying so much in school and learning more online this is crazy thank you thank you!
Hey Stella Araujo I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Thank you so much for watching.
I feel the exact same way!
Me too, thank you
I always use Wella colour touch with their 4% developer for this technique and it works beautifully. 9/16 is my absolute fave. Xx
Thanks for this! I just did that to myself and was able to get my level 6 to a golden/natural 7 and I love it.
I've been doing hair for 30 years. There used to be a product from Clairol called Luminize. It came in clear, Ash and gold. It was perfect for this type of work. It only lifted about half a level. And could be used alone for just brightening hair . I loved it and they quit making it. I wish they'd bring it back and with a P and a T. Anyway. You made me think of it.
Joico has one! It’s called base breaker.
I love your energy! I appreciate your specific instructions.
I would love to see more short hair color techniques. I’m wondering how to color block short hair.
Thank you for this! I'm a newbie fresh out of school. Your videos have helped me so much! Thank you for sharing this technique. I'm definitely going to try this out next time I do highlights. What formula do you suggest for a base bump with Matrix? That is the brand our salon uses. Would a 10p with matrix work?
9A 30 vol is what we used to do 😅😅 the mini heart attacks 😂
The best video explaining this technique on UA-cam, of course
Thank you for this video. Right timing, I never have done a base bump and a new client asked for it 😱 I feel more confident now about it.
I'm so happy to hear you loved this video. Thanks for watching!
I've been doing color now for almost a year after a 17 year break of just doing haircuts. U have taught me so much. Thank you.
Hey Ruby Hampton I'm so happy to hear you've learned so much from my videos! Thank you so much for watching.
Great video. Do you have anything for highlights with a base bump and grey blending?
I'll keep that in mind for a future video. Thanks for watching!
I love everything you do. 🥰✂️
That makes me so happy to hear. Thanks for watching!
Love it honey! I like whatever you do, if you think it’s important we know your tips and tricks by all means it does help us ! She looks great! I never even knew what a base bump was (forgive me I’m a nail tech turned stylist) I tried brightening my daughter’s golden blonde with Clairol T-18 and 20 volume, the color in the bowl and the suds looked perfect like a purple/ grey, but we rinsed and dried it and it did NOTHING!!!! Absolutely nothing! I’m thinking because I did her hi lights weeks ago and she didn’t want the toner then but now she did and I told her to just wash her hair and towel dry however I think she conditioned it. Would this have stopped the toner to process? I’m so disappointed. Any advice would help, thank you! ❤️ your work
I'm so happy to hear you loved this! I don't give out advice like this in my comments because so much depends on what you see in person. So sorry to disappoint. Thanks for watching!
Ooooooo!!!! I love this!!! 😍💪 what a fun technique! Thank you beautiful xx all my love from Australia 😘 #TotallyGonnaTryThis
I love that. I hope you love the technique! Thanks for watching.
I know nothing about hair and happened to stumble across your videos randomly one night. I have been watching your channel for a few weeks now and have learned so much! As an insurance agent that knows nothing about hair, I do enjoy the videos that show a start to finish on a client! But videos like this are important for cosmetologists too! Basically just here to let you know that you're amazing and I love all of your content!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
Hi Jamie, this is a weird question. Can u tell me where to get the head rest on the shampoo bowl? Thx
It comes with the shampoo bowl. I got it from Minerva.
Jamie Dana thx
Love all you're videos ❤🥰 !! Watching from Fort Smith Arkansas
That makes me so happy to hear. Thanks for watching!
great video - great advice - thanks for sharing - anything to consider when having greys (really silver) on the roots
So basically you’re using ammonia and cream the 10P cannot touch a “15 vol” lift on a NL 5-6-7-8. Equal parts 10 & 20 make 18 vol, fyi. 😜
Love this!! It’s a lot like the Goldwell 5 Minute Blonde! I hope you make more videos like these!😊
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this! Thanks so much for watching.
Love seeing start to finish techniques. And think the timing on certain products are important to me also. Thanks your GREAT😍
Love all your videos. Full video is best for me. I watch while putting on my face and doing my hair for work...... have learned so much from you. Thank you so much!!!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
That is beautiful!!!! I like the shorter video, the results for me is the diamond! I wish you could do my hair. It's naturally white. :D Love your hair!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
It would be nice if you make a series of work with an international brand like schwarzkopf...Blond Me!
Something we kann follow your work with! I live in Costa Rica (greetings from Jaco Beach!) I do not get the products you use hier! 🥺
I have been doing it like this for 20 years. TIP: You have to extend the color over the length of the new grow, all it it or you will have banding. The color that extends out from her head is darker than the root area.
Love this quick tip and I would love to see more in the future! You are awesome!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
You're awesome! I'm 50 percent gray& get highlights&lowlights I pull so much red that she does neutral colors on me and I like pale baby highlights really fine but I'm at a point I really like to grow out my gray because it's a silvery gray I think it would be pretty but I don't know how to do it any suggestions?? Diane
I have a question on the mixing of 20 vol and 10 vol in equal parts to make 15 vol. how does this dilute the 20 vol to 15 vol.would it not still be 20 vol. or even 30 vol.l have been hairdressing for 40 yrs and have never known this equation.I have always used dilution of peroxide with water ie for peroxide strength of 15 vol use equal part water to 30 vol.
I have been looking for this video for a long time! Although I do like my root color slightly lighter than this, or more lift since I'm a natural Level 2-3ish..
BIs your base bump 1:2 ratio with the 15 volume developer or 1:1 ratio Jamie?? Awesome video!
What about if you have grey hair 90% on front as level 10 shade may not cover it . Any suggestion for base bump or base root cover in level 10 highlights when roots are grown
To not tell people what the formula is on doing your hair or how to be better at something they want the success for themselves and that's really sad that people don't want to share secret recipes because then they won't you know obviously I get it at stores don't want to share it but the hairdresser or a celebrity won't show you secrets about how they stay in shape when we when we are doing well and people can tell we're doing well don't you want to share with everybody else so they can find happiness and confidence and excitement for themselves? However if when my when my ex asked I told my ex that I know half of this password in his phone he says how do you know and I knew that if I told him he would make sure I didn't happen again lovely relationships...
I just did highlights and really needed to blend it but didnt want to root shadow. I have a 9n color from ion or a wella 8n/811. Can i use one of these to base bump??
I love your videos! I would absolutely love for to continue digging deeper with more specific targeted techniques!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!
Jamie can you do a highlight without looking stripes? Just with bleach . Say hair level 6? Thanks
Soy cubana vivo aquí en Florida central soy estilista y amo tus trabajos eres bien profesional y sigo tus consejos saludos Marilyn 😊
Hi!! You may have answered thin in the video and I might have just missed it but why did you goose a level 10 rather than 1 to 1.5 levels higher than her base?
We love it all! Tell us all your secrets!
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this! Thanks so much for watching.
How much 10P do you use , you say equal parts peroxide but how much color. Thank you 😊
i’m always so eagerly waiting for new videos from you 😆😍 as always love your positive attitude and cheerful voice ☺️
That makes me so happy to hear. Thanks for watching!
How would you match the base bump color to those copper strands she has on the body of her hair. They don’t match the base bump so it looks like she three different colors.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Very helpful for this base bump question/problem I’ve been having. So appreciative.
Just saw this and it was so helpful. Love the short and sweet videos. Would you tone before or after this?
Can you use 10V instead? Hard to find 10P when you're not a professional.
Would loveee a video where you want to lift the base like 2 levels but not change the highlight level if that makes sense
