i really dislike this version. well, it's average at best to me. in my opinion, it has almost none of what makes the original good, it almost doesn't even seem like the same song to me. to me, the original is defined by its faster tempo, and the dissonant/menacing droning guitar E power chords over Flea's bass part that involves playing a D over the guitar's E, adding an interesting sort of oppressive sound to it, like a "menacing party" vibe. in this version, Dave just follows the bass part entirely, moving the chords and down to the root of what Flea is playing, and makes the guitar part sound more like just a bouncy up and down ordinary rocking type deal, which gives both his and Flea's part less meaning, and which kills the heavyness and soul in my opinion. i also really love Anthony's singing/rapping in the original, but this slower tempo i feel discourages him from singing/rapping in his special pseudo-melodic sort of style, and instead just doing the sort of monotone shout vocals just to fill that longer/more drawn-out space that again, kill the soul from the track in my opinion and just make it more boring in comparison to the original. and i hate to say it, but i think Chad sort of just sounds like a goober when he plays some of these old tracks. his playing here is very simple and dare i say soulless. Jack's playing on the original is simple too, but i feel it was played with way more meaning and intent and soul than what Chad is doing here i know Chad's a great player, but i feel like maybe his style isn't suited to their older songs like this, or maybe he just didn't bother spending much time to learn. to me, everything about this version by almost everyone except Flea is notably worse and more lifeless than the original i'm not hating, these guys are great, just stating why i don't like this version. i just find it strange that people seem to herald this version as some sort of super great and even improved version of the song, meanwhile i'm trying to learn and figure out exactly how Hillel played on the original, because some of it is a bit buried in the mix and hard to hear, but most tabs and covers and other resources seem to just do this version instead
@@shallex5744 Everyone has their own opinion i suppose, personally i enjoy this version of the song because it is not a copy and paste version of the original which i think Dave done a very good job of when he was in the band. He wasnt just playing it note for note he was putting his on touch on it ya know. I also dont know if it was a band choice but i love the fact most of the songs they played as a band were more of Hillels stuff rather than playing Mothers Milk and Blood Sugar songs all the time.
