      Even looking at the gx9 today i note it doesn't have auto iso in manual mode like the gm5 does. And I shoot in that mode most of the time. Fingers crossed my gm5 never dies then i guess

      And that thumb wheel makes all the difference, the gm1 was very screen centred which wasn't much use in bright sunshine. We just sold our gm1 and bought a second gm5 instead. I've got a gx9 but for walking / climbing it's a gm5 I reach for

    Rent a Sony RX10M4 Camera to see if you like it as it gives really good bokeh.

    Hi Markus ! I'm struggling between the GX850 and the NX500 ... Which one would you recommend for making B-roll and cinematic videos ? Like you I love blurry background and even if I manage to have some with the RX100V (ND filter + 1.8 and close up most of the time) I feel like I need an upgrade. The A6400 looks like a good option but is it really better than GX850 and NX500 ?

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  3 роки тому +1

      Ooh the GX850 and NX500 are two of my fav cameras. The GX850 is smaller and lighter but the NX500 has a bigger sensor- in fact it's sensor is bigger than the 6400. The only benefit of the 6400 is the viewfinder. The NX500 weighs half what the 6400 does. ua-cam.com/video/2UUZfvfhrvQ/v-deo.html All three are good cameras and you'd get great results with all of them.

      @@MarkusPix I know they are your favorites ! I just watched your entire videos in only 2 days, love your content ! I might go with the GX85, it's a big heavier but apparently the stabilization is awesome. Would you recommend the panasonic 25mm F 1.7 with it or would you have another favorite choice ?

  • @mowuvz3672
    @mowuvz3672 2 роки тому +1

    While these cameras are good, none other than GX800/850 is now available new in market.
    He also showed portrait lenses. These are not good for travel photography. The best and most affordable MFT travel lens is Panasonic 12-32 pancake or Olympus 14-42 EZ, which are kit lenses come with Panasonic/Olympus cameras. If you want prime, go for 14 to 17 mm focal lengths for travel shots.

  • @lcdemack

    This video has my camera ethos written all over it. Bravo Markus!
    It's why my first real new digital was the GX1 which you showed, and today I'm still using my GM3 and GX850 all the time even tho I have plenty of other bigger cameras.
    These are the kings of travel cameras.
    I have never understood why these cameras never became hugely popular for travel by pro-super types given their size, matched with their interchangeable lens functionality and tiny but fast lenses. They are fantastic for travel, or that night at a party where you don't want to take a big camera or stick out at the party, and yet all along you have a great tool with an amazing depth of manual features, and amazing results.
    And! You can take one or two more lenses along in your pocket.
    A bit slow compared to some these days, some focus issues depending on the lens you use, no in-body stabilization, but only on some slower lenses, but you just need to learn how to use this camera and the best suited lenses and you're golden.
    Love that you did this video. It hits the nail on the head of why these cameras have no match for their combo of features, and I hope in years to come someone will continue to produce a tiny but very capable interchangeable lens camera like these.

    After watching this (in June 2020), I searched and searched for a Panasonic GM5 and I did find one (in English!) on ebay. It took a few weeks to find one that was not from Japan, with the Japanese menus. I looked up how to "win on ebay" and used their tips and I won it (cost me $481)! I am so excited to use this tiny camera, which I will pair with the Panasonic 45-175mm (90-350mm equivalent) lens for now, because I love that set of focal lengths for the photography I generally do. This lens zooms internally so it's really small ( for 350mm!!) and light. The entire thing will fit in a pocket. (Yay!!) Later, I may try a fixed focal length lens that is faster and with better bokeh (as suggested in your other videos). I'll have to decide how much to put into a MFT system, since Olympus just announced they're getting away from that now. Anyway, THANK YOU for this video and the review of the tiny travel cameras, and I can't wait to play with it! Your videos are uniformly informative and most of all, USEFUL, unlike so many photography vlogs out there. I am so grateful. Happy summer!

    I see these lovely little vameras and they do make ideal travel cameras. I have had a couple of 1" sensor ICL cameras when I've travelled and experienced the difference it makes to have an entire basic camera system spread over two jacket pockets (spare battery in the shirt pocket, of course.)
    I am now using and enjoying a GX 8, not a tiny camera by any means, but still more portable than my original Sony SLT.
    It strikes me that we often think in terms of professional cameras -v- travel cameras, but there is at least one class which isn't often mentioned; that is, business cameras.
    Many businesses could make great use of small but powerful cameras which may not be G 9s or EM-1s, but produce excellent results for reports, newsletters, brochures and such.
    In my town planning days, we did some enforcement as well as the day to day development control work. We also worked with health inspectors and building assessors and there were many times when a travel sized camera would have been ideal for obtaining not only useful information for our internal purposes, but high quality images which could also be enlarged to A4 size for use in court reports
    Perhaps promotions could pay more attention to such use cases.

    I hate heavy bulky cameras and I’ve never seen the point to them. Digital cameras are small and lightweight, to be carried anywhere, The photos looked good! Pocketable cameras give the most bang for the buck. My only cameras are point and shoot and I’ve no intention of expanding to more complicated equipment.

    Hi Markus, I want to tell you that I love your channel. You are very positive and you stick out from the others. Because of your good reviews, I bought a used GX850 in new condition for 219€ and a Olympus 45mm 1.8 for 180€. I am absolutely excited about the quality it delivers in such a tiny package and for 400€ combined. I spent thousand on photography equipment and this is by far the best bang per buck. If I had known that before.. could have saved a lot of money. I'd say that it would be sufficent to shoot weddings, if it had a hotshoe. The size is perfect and so much less intimidating to the subjects. I always loved panasonic for the good usability and menues but ignored the brand after moving from the FZ1000 to more serious equipment (canon dslrs, Fuji). I am happy to be home again with the little gx850.

    I bought an orange GM1 for my wife and replaced it with silver GF7 and orange GX800. The latter one supports "NTSC" frame rates in mp4 mode, so it was not a problem for me. I have never really missed GM1, because both GF7 and GX800 were good enough substitutions for me, being nearly as small, adding flip-out monitor and removal of AA filter on the sensor, and addition of DFD autofocus. These small cameras are indeed marvels of technology and useability, especially when served as a second and backup body. My GF7 took great pics of hummingbirds in Costa Rica, saved the day and vacation in St. Petersburg, Russia, when my GX85 was dropped and stopped working, and GX800 was a remarkable tool in hands of my wife in Puerto Rico, when she took great pics of pelicans-in-flight (!) at Playa Tamarindo east of Guanica. Pair those tiny bodies with such mighty plastic fantastics as tiny 12-32mm and 35-100mm collapsibles and you are set to go to take great pics!

    For my needs ie mountaineering and wild camping I've yet to find a better camera body than the gm5. Come on Panasonic, make a mk2 and please change the mode dial and focus mode dials to user defined wheels, then you'd have the best small camera ever made

    Just chanced across this. Super. I still travel with two GM5, and three primes, and they fit into a tiny pouch. You should get a Rokinon fisheye. Mine happens to be sharp corner to corner wide open at f3.5. I shoot down to 1/20 and it is tack sharp hand held with good breath control. It's too bad that they never updated it. My other two travel prime are the 15mm f1.7, and 42.5mm f 1.7 with image stabilization. Of course, at home, I even put that large 42.5mm f1.2 among other primes that I have. It remains a credible tool.

    Very cute cameras and because of your videos I bought a second hand MFT camera. It's good and compact but is not that compact.

    Wow , they were brilliant cameras , I love my Panasonic's, I've got the fz82 bridge camera with 60x zoom , it's a great camera to put in my handbag lol , but I would like a smaller one , & from what ive seen on utube , mirrorless cameras are the way to go now .

      @@MarkusPix well then say that. In your video you keep saying it's the world's smallest camera with interchangeable lenses. That's just simply wrong.

    • @andimaniac
      @andimaniac 5 років тому

      @@MarkusPix wrong, they have less features then the Q, Q has features of biggest and greatest cams, much better handling and more possibilities in a small case. I have Pentax Q and I also have GM1, I love the pictures GM1 makes, but hate how to operate it, it is very complicated, it also lacks of auto ISO in manual a/t mode, has no IBIS and so one and so one, but IT IS NOT THE POINT, the smallest is Pentax Q.

    • @greentechnology3529
      @greentechnology3529 5 років тому

      Pentax-Q has a super-Q lens mount, and the thing is about MFT. In addition, Minox DCC 14.0 is even smaller.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  5 років тому

      The Pentax Q is actually only 1 mm shorter, has a MUCH smaller sensor - actually 8 TIMES smaller! 4.5mm x 6.17mm vs the Panasonic 13mm x 17.3mm (less resolution (12MP vs 16MP) & less soft bokeh background) the GM1/GM5 has over 500% more pixel area, The PQ ISO only goes to 6400 vs 25,600 on the Panasonics, only 2 fps continuous shooting vs 6, no viewfinder, no touch screen like the Panasonic, no wireless, no face detection like the Panasonic, very low rez LCD (460 vs 921), no time lapse. Definitely cannot get the same resolution and quality, but to each his own. Glad you love your Q. Enjoy it in peace.

    Small cameras are great! I am an a5100 user ... I have one that lives on a gimbal, and another to carry. It's missing the features of some of the other Sony's a6*** series, but its size, flip-up screen and touch to focus make it a winner for me. I think that the size of a camera is inversely proportional to the amount of photos and video you shoot. That's why I love my small cameras. Great video, I enjoyed seeing the cameras and your shots ... thanks!

    I'm beginning to regret selling my little GM5. Bought a GX880 to sort of replace it. I't not as nice as the GM5 but the image quality is immense, practically on a par with the Lumix G9 :)

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  4 роки тому

      I think that's the European version of the GX850, and yes I agree, the image quality of the GX850 / 880 is amazing, I have three of them! The only thing missing is an EVF, which is why I still use the GM5 sometimes when I want really small.
