Just used Hydrostone for the first time last week to cast a loudspeaker enclosure. Was trying to find something more economical than epoxy resin to fill large spaces. Watched some of your videos the last couple of days and was researching Cement-All vs Hydrostone this morning when your video popped up. Serendipitous timing, just what I was looking for and a great video! I got the Hydrostone I used from Amazon, $36 for 10lbs and I am really liking it so far. Thank you, good luck and keep up the great work!
I live in washington state and was able to get 50lb hydrostone from Euclids for $50 including tax and shipping! I ordered a 10lb bag for $38 off of amazon to test it out after watchjng all your vids and now that I am a little more comfortable with the material, I went ahead and found the cheaper bag. Still in need of a good sealant though. I just went with clarks cement wax, but saw your video after about how it may not work for hydrostone. Crossing my fingers two to three coats can work tho! Thank you for your videos!!!
I'm in Oregon and can't find any Hydrostone in stock near me. The only place I can find it is on Amazon and it's well overpriced. Guess I'll just keep my eyes open for when it is available again but I refuse to pay Amazon's inflated prices.
If you want more strength you can add 10% white cement to Hydrostone and result is great. If you want to have more professional result; instead of 30%water with Hydrostone 25-27% water + 5% TiO2 will create perfect result for you. Also if you add 0.5-1% Potassium Sulfate to water, demold time would reach to 10-15 minutes. Nice video by the way, thank you.
Made my first vessel with Hydrostone last night & demolded it this morning. It looks so good! I absolutely love how it's easier to get lumps and clumps out when mixing vs using Cement All and I did not need Flow Control. I'm going to stick with Cement All for now as no one in my state sells Hydro-Stone and the shipping costs is over $100 for a 50lb bag.
@@upvibecandle OMG so I sent this video to a friend who was asking me about the difference between the two and noticed I never responded. I ordered it from some company in Minnesota at the time. Now I get some from Artistic Industries out of Utah. I'm in Dallas.
Hydrostone and Cement All BOTH contain respirable crystalline silica according to their SDS (safety data sheets), which is carcinogenic and causes silicosis. Definitely agree with you that you must wear a respirator when using both, but I wanted to clarify that Hydrostone isn’t a lower personal safety risk. Awesome video though. I appreciate that you looked at all aspects of Hydrostone and I look forward to trying it myself.
While Hydrostone's main components don't normally consist of silica sand, there is a potential for trace amounts of silica to exist. This can occur due to impurities found in the raw materials or any additional substances employed during its manufacturing process. Nevertheless, it's crucial to highlight that Hydrostone remains a safer alternative. Your comment is appreciated though.
Thank you Jai! You are an incredible teacher! I live in Canada and can not get earth safe finishes for my hydrostone containers. I need to seal them asap. Can I go with any other safe sealers? I am ok sealing them several times if need be. Much thanks! Keep up the great content.
What I also found interesting is the weight that you needed for each jar. Hydrostone was lighter, so I’m assuming that you used less (since it’s by the pound) of the Hydrostone to fill the mold? Another win for Hydrostone?
Well you are meditation and relaxation so I am not sure your opinion completely counts.... LOL!!! All jokes aside I will make note of it for the next go around. Thanks for the comment.
@@upvibecandle Good one…should have seen that one coming.🤣Just seemed like you and the music were competing at times. Thanks for the reply, gonna go meditate and relax now.🤣
I do love my hydrostone my vessels come out so beautiful ❤ it depends on my mold how thick the bottom is I seal some 2 times and some 3 times I do use both cement all and hydrostone tho depending on what mold and design I want
I found a place closer to home but it's still a drive and won't make sense if I just buy 1 bag. I would need to buy several to make it make sense. Sometimes ordering it is the best option.@@karenMQSoapery
My husband called USG directly and they said there's a 20-week lead time waiting on materials... So even those that do have it might be running out soon. 😐
Just found you and I'm interested in this craft. What's your thoughts on ecopours jesmonite, boowanite or resincrete? I've seen crafters using these products for vessels
Hi Jai! Have you thought about doing stand up comedy? You would be really good at it, you had me laughing. Question for you? I know you stated awhile back to me that you haven't done any experiments on UltraCal 30. Now, I'm really into making candles yet so, I do mold other things. I just bought some Hydrostone to try, can I use distill water instead of tap water? Or is tapy water better for Hydrostone? I've tried both on UltraCal 30 and got less bubbles with distill water than tap. I was just curious. Love the videos and see you at Comedy Club...LOL.
Watched this again and took some notes - thank you for taking the time. I def want to try it out for vessels only - for making them faster. I might want to try acrylic paint since I heard pigment doesn't show as well? (Correct me if I'm wrong). And near the end of your video, would you do more of both items mixed?
Honestly pigments are where it's at for Hydrostone. I am doing a video now that has 5 vessels with CA and 5 with Hy and the results are stunning. However, as an artist, beauty is in the eye of the creator.
Ok I’m pretty sure we live in the same state. So please tell me where you’re getting the hydro stone! Maybe it’s within a reasonable driving distance for me as well!
Hello Jai, I am located in the west of Houston. I've noticed efflorescence (calcium carbonate) on my hydrostone vessels. I demold my jars with gloves, as well. I've tried using the earth pigments and it's still an issue. Do you have any suggestions? I didn't have this situation when I was using Hydrocal.
To be frank, shipping costs can be a bit on the higher side, regardless of what you're sending. But here's a little secret: I've factored shipping expenses into my product prices, so I don't dwell on them too much.
