This is my quick story about Stevie Nicks: I saw her on tour in Las Vegas at the Aladdin hotel way back in the day. It was her solo tour after the breakup of Fleetwood Mac. There was no opening act, no closing act. Just her, in all of her mystical sorceress hypnotic stage presence. When she reached the end of her set list, before the final encore, she went around and gathered flowers from fans in the front row. Big lavish bouquets of spectacular flowers. While accepting these flowers someone stole her ring right off of her finger. She went back over to the microphone. She then had the lights turned off in the whole venue. The whole place went dark. I mean pitch black. Those of us not in the front row had no idea what was going on. Holy crap. And then Stevie said, “Someone stole my ring. These lights are going to remain off for five minutes and if my ring is not back on the stage at the end of the five minutes the concert is over.” I don’t think anybody left the room. The Aladdin Hotel Theater got eerily quiet. Five minutes later the stage lights came back on, she walked over to the edge of the stage and picked up her ring which somehow reappeared during the blackout, she put it on her finger and continued with two more encores. What a class act she is!!!
Originally Nicks was inspired to write a song titled “Edge Of Seventeen” after meeting Tom Petty’s wife, who told Nicks she’d met Petty at the ‘age of seventeen’ - but her southern accent was so thick, it sounded like ‘edge of seventeen’. However, after the death of her uncle Jonathan and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980, she wrote about her grief resulting from these tragedies, but decided to keep the song title.
Stevie Nicks - Talk to Me - Seven Wonders - Stand Back - Gypsy - (Stevie Nicks and Don Henley - Leather and Lace) ( Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty Sing - Stop Dragging my Heart Around)
Stevie was one of my earliest teenage crushes. Absolutely beautiful women, incredible hair, supermodel looks, and a voice that could rip through anything. As I got older I still had a crush on her, but I was able to appreciate her voice more and more. She's still one of my favorite female vocalists ever all these years later. So much good music from Buckingham Nicks, to Fleetwood Mac, to her solo career, she kicked ass in everything she did.
So many good songs from her solo work. This album was great. Need to check out Stop Dragging My Heart Around duet with Tom Petty and Leather and Lace with Don Henley. I saw her on tour in 1983 with Joe Walsh as the opener and then again in 1989 with The Hooters (All You Zombies). The 1989 tour had Shelia E's brother playing percussion. The lead guitarist is Waddy Wachtel who also played with Linda Ronstadt.
That rhythm guitar riff that drives the whole song was a contribution of the great LA studio and touring guitarist Waddy Wachtel…..one of the best rhythm guitar players ever and a top-sideman to the likes of Keith Richards and innumerable others. He is still Stevie’s guitarist and road manager, and they are out on a mammoth tour right now.
Love this song. The guitar player here is a legend! Waddy Wachtel was/is a studio musician and has played on tons of songs. Arlo Guthrie, Bob Segar, Ringo Starr, Linda Ronstadt, Beth Hart, Stevie Nicks, Kim Carnes, Randy Newman, Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones (lead guitar on "Saint of Me"), Jon Bon Jovi, James Taylor, Iggy Pop, Warren Zevon, Bryan Ferry, Michael Sweet, Jackson Browne, Karla Bonoff, and Andrew Gold to name but a few of the artists he worked with. He was also the acoustic guitar player in the movie 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972) and has scored dozens of movies and appeared on hundreds of albums. Stevie Nicks knew what she wanted to achieve with “Edge of Seventeen.” Waddy Wachtel however had never heard ‘Bring On the Night,’ which Stevie wanted it to feel like. "I had heard something about the Police, but I didn’t know what they were talking about.” In fact, he didn't completely appreciate the similarities between “Edge of Seventeen” and “Bring on the Night” for years he was quoted as saying. “I had the radio on, and on comes what sounds like ‘Edge of Seventeen’ - and all of a sudden, there’s Sting’s voice!” Wachtel said. “I thought, ‘We ripped them off completely!’ I called Stevie that night and said, ‘Listen to me: Don’t ever do that again!’” Source: ultimateclassicrock.com/stevie-nicks-edge-of-seventeen/
On one of the VHS tapes I had, a live performance, Waddy comes out on stage alone, he walks out, stands there for a moment, bows his head and just starts up that riff, and the crowd just erupted. Man was and still is legend as you said!
Starting to love your viewpoint. I can't believe how much of this music that is the soundtrack of my life will live on. I've seen 80% of these phenominal artists. Zeppelin 5 times. The best concert was Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"tour in 1973. Took you to another dimension. Keep rocking.✌️🌻🌻
Also, Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle and the death of John Lennon. The line about the "Words from a poet and a voice from a choir" refers to Lennon. she explained: "I was in Australia when John Lennon was shot. Everybody was devastated. I didn't know John Lennon, but I knew Jimmy Iovine, who worked with John quite a bit in the '70s, and heard all the loving stories that Jimmy told about him. When I came back to Phoenix I started to write this song. Right when I got to Phoenix, my uncle Bill got cancer, got very sick very fast, and died in a couple of weeks. My cousin John Nicks and I were in the room when he died. There was just John and I there. That was part of the song when I went running down the hallways looking for somebody - I thought where's my mom? Where's his wife and the rest of the family? At that point I went back to the piano and finished the song."
A song that has forever stood the test of time!!! Other songs from Stevie are 'Beauty And The Beast, If Anyone Falls, Stand Back, Nightbird, Talk To Me, I Can't Wait, Leather And Lace w/ Don Henley, Stop Draggin' My Heart (Around) w/Tom Petty, Wild Heart
😊❤ Hi Phil and Sam! 😅 Awe one of my favorite solos by Stevie Nicks!! Stevie wrote this after both her uncle and John Lennon died. She and a younger cousin were staying with her uncle at his home in the AZ desert. She was older than her cousin so when they discovered her uncle she had to try and be the responsible one despite her own grief. I got this from her cd insert for "Timescape". Instead of putting the lyrics to the songs, she wrote a paragraph or two about the writing of the song. Another awesome song is "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You ". She wrote that for/about Eric Clapton when he lost his young child. Very sad but the song will show you yet another side of Stevie, very tender and powerful at the same time. Love you guys!! 😊❤❤
I saw her in the '80s and she was great live!🔥💯 She had a changing room on the side of the stage and she did at least 8 wardrobe changes during the concert. And she was freakin' gorgeous in every one of them!🤗❤️✌️
glad to see you react to and enjoy this one. Saw Stevie live in November 2023. She nailed this one, and the rest of the show. I was actually shocked at how good she still sounds. For anyone who has been thinking about seeing her out on tour in 2024, go!
Tickets prices in the stratosphere…..at least the one in LA area…….bummed cause I’d like to see her…..AND Waddy Wachtel, one of my favorite characters in music.
One of the backup singers is her sister, I'm thinking the one on the right. I love Stevie's hair in this video! I had many a spiral perm in the 80s and still like to get one occasionally.
In many of my Army pictures taken in the barracks, you can see the large poster of Stevie Nicks on my wall. We were allowed one poster, and she was it. lol
Love this song by Stevie Nicks! She also does a great duo with Tom Petty, the song "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" 🔥. Also, you may want to check out these female rockers of the time..Pat Benatar and Joan Jett. They are both excellent, IMO😊. Thanks for reacting to this Stevie Nicks song, I loved it❣️
I got to see Stevie Nicks in 2001, my mom bought me tickets and took me to see her for my 30th birthday, of everyone I had seen up to that point, non held a candle to her, I was mesmerized the entire concert, but I also had a crush on her since I was about 9 years old lol
"STAND BACK" should be next on your Stevie solo dive... she wrote the song after hearing Prince's "Little Red Corvette". It's her response to his iconic song!😜 Oh and fun fact: at Stevie's request, Prince wrote the synth riff for her "Stand Back". The song is just as iconic as "Little Red Corvette"!!👊💯💯💯
The constant in her solo career has always been her best friend Sharon Celani on backing vocals and her guitarist and music arranger Waddy Watchel who also played with another great female singer in Linda Ronstadt
80s would have never been the same without Stevie. Her live version is awesome and much love displayed between artist and fan. We were blessed our artists performed for us. " Gypsy" is a great one too.
Her concert supporting the album has a performance that you really need to watch. Her voice is on point and her interaction with her fans are highlights. And I think her sister is the backup on the left of the screen. She sang on a number of Stevie's songs.
I'd say this is her best solo piece, but give them all a listen. Keep in mind she also has duets in her solo career. Sam, Stevie was wearing lighter colors for her performance (a white winged dove, singing oo-oo-oo), but in the video she was wearing black. As for the song meaning, it's a jumble of things, including the deaths in 1980 of her uncle John and of John Lennon. The bits that sound like visiting are linked to her uncle, who died of cancer at home. The nightbird calling would be the angel of death, somewhat similar to the song "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult.
The guitar riff at the beginning indeed was sampled in a Destiny's Child song, Bootylicious. If I'm not mistaken Stevie was in the video playing the guitar riff. Crazy knowing what that song is about vs the deeper meaning Stevie has in Edge of Seventeen. I blast this when Im driving, along with the rest of her catalog & Fleetwood Mac's lol. Rumours is still my favorite album to this day.
Stevie made a cameo playing the guitar riff in the Destiny's Child music video Bootylicious, there's a behind the scenes clip on how DC asked Stevie to be in the video...
Stevie Nicks who was born Stephanie Lynn Nicks is the fi😢woman to become a 2 time Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Famer and it's well deserved !! You should do her duet with Tom Petty called Stop Dragging My Heart Around it's awesome !!
I do love this song, another great one you should listen to is Leather and Lace, love that one too!❤❤ Great reaction Phil & Sam, really enjoying listening to you guys!!
She is one of a kind! One always knows any song she sings that it is her's, in a good way. Another rocker from that timeframe is Pat Benetar. You may have already reacted to her: 'We Belong", 'Heartbreaker", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" are a few of her biggies.
This song has multiple inspirations. The title was inspired by a conversation Nicks had with Tom Petty's 1st wife, Jane, regarding when the couple first met at the "age of seventeen". Due to Jane's southern accent, it sounded like "Edge of Seventeen" to Stevie. She promised to use the phrase in a future song. Years later, Stevie wrote the rest of the song to express her grief over the death of her Uncle Johnathan and the Beatles' legend John Lennon in the same week. The line about the dove was inspired by a menu at a restaurant.
I'm with Sam, thinking one-winged dove, but my husband corrected me (and I looked up the lyrics), that it is white winged dove, which definitely makes more sense. Thanks for another great reaction!
Stevie is amazing, in contrast listen to Has anyone ever written anything for you, Rooms on fire and Outside the rain (Red rocks version is awesome) not so well known but classics from her solo career.
Stevie’s debut-solo album. Wanting to remain anonymous…Prince had his hand in some songs. “Stand Back”…Stevie was struggling with getting the right sound. Prince was at the studio, came to say hi. Stevie told Prince of her struggles…Prince walked to a drum machine and the sound was born. Prince played all instruments on the recording, but didn’t want credit. id. Golddust Woman - SN autobiography.
Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham originally put out their own album in 1973 titled simply Buckingham Nicks. The entire album is remarkable, but did not sell well due to poor marketing. I fell in love with Stevie's vocals, kind of raspy and yet purely beautiful. Try Crying In The Night, Races Are Run, Long Distance Winner, Crystal, and the monumental Frozen Love. You won't be disappointed.
If you like, strong, female, vocals and lyrics from the Fleetwood Mac album, the dance, they captured magic with a live version of their song Silver Springs.
Love Stevie!
If y'all haven't reacted to it already, you should check out her and Tom Petty, stop dragging my heart around
Yes! Stop Dragging My Heart Around, Nick's and Petty. Great song!
Yes, I agree😊
Agreed. Awesome song

"when ever i call you friend" with kenny loggins
There is a live performance of this song from 1981 that you ABSOLUTELY must see! PHENOMENAL!!!
One day, you should react to her song "Stand Back."
"Stand Back" live in Chicago is awesome.
Yes I was thinking this too.
Stevie Nicks GREAT voice song movie School of Rock.....
Incredible guitar work by Waddy Wachtel
Let’s thank Waddy for that shredding guitar lick.
Stevie is currently touring or just finished touring. She is still phenomenal in her 70's.

I have worked on her for facials back in the day, She was a gracious client and a REAL lady! Total respect for this woman/artist!
There is a concert video, which is UNBELIEVABLE!
Yes, that's ny favorite performance.
💯💯💯YES!!!! It's actually the official vid for the song. It's the BEST!!!!🥰🥰🥰
Live at Red Rocks, great vid
Her back up singers were a big part of her solo work then and I believe very good friends of Stevie. One of my favorite female vocalists.
Lisa Nicks is the on the Left. That is her "sister in-law/sister" Both have stayed with her through the years.
Jack Black puts this song on the jukebox in School of Rock and sings along to it.
Pat Benetar was bringing the heat on the female solo side in the late 70's into the 80's.
THANKS FOR NOT STOPPING THE SONG EVERY 15 SECONDS
Leather and Lace, Stand Back.
One word: LEGEND
Stevie and band could. and did, perform the song live as well as the studio recording. Mega hit of the 80's.

"Stop Dragging My Heart Around" magical! Joan Jett also sings about a 17 year old. Been a long, long time since I was seventeen.
That rhythm guitar riff that drives the whole song was a contribution of the great LA studio and touring guitarist Waddy Wachtel…..one of the best rhythm guitar players ever and a top-sideman to the likes of Keith Richards and innumerable others. Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nick were back up for a singer named john Stewart. The songs name was ' GOLD' to me its a great song.
"If Anyone Falls" is another great one from this album. So is "Stand Back" ✋️

Great song by Nicks, one on many.
She is haunting, which is delightful. Try listening to "Gold Dust Woman." It's a Fleetwood Mac song.
"STAND BACK" should be next on your Stevie solo dive... she wrote the song after hearing Prince's "Little Red Corvette". It's her response to his iconic song!😜

She is called The Rock Goddess
Such a deep rabbit hole, even just her solo work. 🐐 🐐 🐐
This song reminds me of my mom so much every time i hear this I cry.
Another great song is Nightbird. Stevie sings it with her sister-in-law Cindy Nicks who has been a backup singer for Stevie for years.
