Both had said that with the benefit of hindsight, each of them could have done more for Kurt but they didn't know how bad off he was as he and Courtney hid the extent of his problem well. They said Kurt would disappear for 2-3 days at a time when using and then he would clean up for a couple of months and get in the studio but after the In Utero tour, his usage increased, there were discussions of a divorce, the band was fighting behind the scenes because Kurt was off, etc. Dave and Krist both said they felt if they continued working together, they would always live in Kurt's shadow and everything they did would be compared to Nirvana. Grohl makes a point of emphasizing that he was one of a revolving door of Nirvana drummers. That band was essentially Cobain/Novoselic and whoever else. What Grohl joined was the Nirvana of _Bleach_ , and I doubt he thought his playing style was really fitting for that ensemble. In fact, if things had turned out differently, I bet Grohl eventually would have been replaced even if he hadn't been allowed to grow as a songwriter and vocalist. Novoselic has a sound reminiscent of Killing Joke's Paul Raven, and it's an integral part of the sound of Nirvana. Adding him to Foo Fighters would have resulted in something that I doubt he (and definitely Grohl) would have wanted, meaning, a Cobain-less Nirvana. If you doubt that, then listen to "I Should Have Known Better", which sounds both like Nirvana and Killing Joke, mainly because of Novoselic's presence. Foo Fighters is a better band than that.

Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith didn’t have anything to do with the Foo Fighters debut. Dave Grohl played every instrument, with the exception of a guitar solo on X-Static, played by Greg Dulli

It’s really weird how much of this story they adjusted and isn’t really how things happened (it’s worded weirdly, like Krist started Nirvana as a creedance cover band, which just isn’t true, he may have thought of starting one, but Nirvana was Kurt’s band and him and Krist were old, really good friends) Which is odd considering the story of Nirvana and Foo Fighters has been told literally by the members of both bands, like she said Dave started making music after Nirvana and wrote, recorded and played all the instruments, then found a touring band and started work on the first Foos album, but Dave wrote and recorded that album alone and got the band together to tour it, none of them were involved in the first album. I wish these channels did even a little research, it’s not like Dave hasn’t told that story a hundred times.
Yeah it was hard to take the rest of it seriously after opening with that version of events. I really appreciate the focus on Krist's origins with the band, but we all know it was really Kurdt + Krist going through a bunch of different band names and drummers before deciding on Nirvana with eventually Chad on the stool for the longest time up until Dave appears.

Krist said for years afterwards that he didnt really have the same desire to make and play music without Kurt, and thats why he never really bothered with anything that big.
I loved seeing them all reunite for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. That performance was incredible and a great tribute to Kurt Cobain. The singers who performed Kurt’s songs, especially Joan Jett and St. Vincent were awesome. Miss you, Kurt.❤
Foo Fighters were not the continuation of Nirvana. Why would it be expected that Krist would just join Grohls project? Krist and Kurt played together with 3 other drummers starting in 1987 before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana. Dave didnt join untill 1990. He wasnt even in the Seattle area before then. Great video. Well done. Upvote given. I've been on a huge Grohl and Nirvana bender since finishing Dave's book last week. I wish they'd collaborate more than they have, but it's still nice to know that they are still friends in some capacity. The relationship between Dave and Krist is an enigma to me.
I'm new to this channel but is the narrator's variation in pronunciations intentional? I think Novoselic's name was delivered 3-4 different ways. She said his first name like "Christ" once (1:59) and even "bassist" was weird (2:36). It's almost like this was an AI reading.
And the answer is.... "The reasons behind this choice were rooted in their desire to avoid any discomfort or tensions that might arise from the past" REALLY? That's fukin all you got to say?
He got into politics, but yeah for years he seemed happy enough pottering around with Volkswagens and doing interviews and music here and there. He was in Flipper for three years, and recently had another project that ended during the pandemic.
listen to the pronunciation at 2:35 of bassist. that combined with tons of incorrect facts and boiler plate Wikipedia scraping. a couple noted here. Dave joined nirvana while it had that name, the trio did not form and then become nirvana. Dave records everything on the first album as a solo project. Krist was collaborated with on later work, and on the record in 1995 said "For Krist and I, it would have felt really natural and really great,” Grohl continued, “But for everyone else, it would have been weird, and it would have left me in a really bad position. Then I really would have been under the microscope.” Basically he didnt want the band to have to live up to Nirvana, or create tension for newer band members.
They saved the name Nirvana with Kurt. That is the point. So we think the NIRVANA at first. And then think about the other bands. That is the most good things for all members.
The story of how Dave got the gig in Nrivana is incorrect. He was drumming for Scream a D.C. punk band and they broke up in l.a. on tour in 1990. Buzz Osborne knew Scream and mentioned that Dave was available and in L.A. so Kurt and Krist had him come to Seattle to try out. The rest of the story we all know....
I am glad that krist didn’t join the foo fighters. I don’t think they would have been as successful as they have been if he did. Nobody wants to be know as “the guys who were in nirvana just without curt”

Sweet 75 was NOT a 2 piece. Bill Rieflin was there from the beginning. Saw them at Brick by Brick in SD and talked with them at length, took pics, etc. Eddie Vedder was there to support his girlfriend Beth's band, Hovercraft, who were opening.
I heard quite a bit of misinformation in this video. Krist was trying to start a Creedence cover band with various drummers such as Aaron Burchard and Chad Channing, and then when he met Dave Grohl they formed Nirvana. Seriously? WTF? LOL
Dave obviously had a HUGE vision and the knowledge and skill to MAKE it happen. I would not have stood in the way of that either. Ride along, you bet. Try to Captain the boat, nope.
Dave had already started writing for Foo Fighters during Nirvana, Krist and Kurt thought it was their drummers silly little art project, and wasn’t going togo from one of the worlds best rock bands, to a silly little art project resulting in a semi cheesy rock band. Even though I like the foos.
i'm gonna turn the video off when the narrator gets a major aspect of the band wrong in the first minute or so. she makes it sound like Krist and Dave were the two founding members and Kurt came later. she says Krist started a CCR cover band and it wasn't until after Dave came along that it turns into Nirvana. this is just fundamentally incorrect. Kurt and Krist may have been playing under other names but Nirvana existed BEFORE Dave was ever a member. Krist meeting Dave did not "lead" to the creation of Nirvana. FFS there's an entirely different drummer on the first Nirvana album. why do people who weren't even alive back then feel the need to make these kind of videos just for some clicks on youtube, and don't even put some basic research into it? and why do people never call this shit out? this person has no idea what shes talking about so why is she pretending to be some authority?
Maybe it’s for all the right reasons… but cmon, the world deserved to see Dave, Pat and Krist together as a proper band and not only several years apart playing Nirvana songs. Tragic as it is, FF lost their drummer recently, may he rest in peace, and i would say this is the perfect time for them to get together. Also, why hasn’t Courtney, who was an accomplished musician and great singer on her own EVER played with them?
They didn't start working together on what would become the "bands" self titled debut. They started working on being able play live versions of those songs already recorded completely by Dave. And nice generic AI version of the "Monkey Wrench" riff at 2:22 🤣😂 Overall, this is still better than many, many other videos covering ancillary topics 🤘 A nice follow up would be a similar exploration of why David Lovering of the Pixies is not the drummer of the Foo Fighters 😉 Third Secret are awesome and thank you for honking their horn.
That riff's all Dave Grohl, not AI. Thanks for the shout-out and the love for Third Secret. As for David Lovering, that could be a rad topic too. Rock on and keep those awesome observations coming! 🎸😄🤘

however, foo fighter would be a little different if dave didn't become a drummer for nirvana n nirvana already had a foundation before dave joined, it was the first album
I believe you undersold Pay Smear's role in Nirvana. He wasnt merely a "touring guitarist". If that were true, why did he receive a Lifetime Achievement Grammy for Nirvana along with Krist and Dave? Kurt also refered to him as a new band member in many interviews at the time.
i mean they maybe would have went on to use him as more than a touring guitarist but the fact is that up until the conclusion of Nirvana, he literally was merely a touring guitarist.
@@Geeksmithing dude i don't care what award some assholes gave him. i'm talking about his actual contribution to the band. instead of citing some stupid award why don't you point me to any of his credits on actual albums? i'll wait. wait no i won't, because i already know the answer- he isn't on any. the only thing he ever did with the band, was to tour with them for the In Utero tour. hence why he's remembered as a touring guitarist. but you can keep talking about your stupid award fact, like it somehow changes reality. do go on.
If memory serves correct Pat did actually join the band, and from the In Utero tour footage it's clear that he brought a lot of energy to the band and was loving every minute of it. Plus he's on Unplugged too. Although as you guys rightly point his tenure in the band was abruptly ended by Kurt's tragic demise
Another take like the other dude said here was that Dave was fed up with Kurt and was already working on what would become FF secretly, knowing he was probably going to eventually be done with Nirvana or they'd break up had Kurt not took his life. Where as Krist was more proactive trying to save Kurt and had a deeper and longer connection with him than Dave. Which I think Krist hadn't started work on anything outside of Nirvana until quite awhile later...which would seem like another inevitable reason Krist would never have been bandmates with Dave either way 🤔 🤷
Stopped listening when she implied Chad was Pre Nirvana and Dave was a founding member. Bleach is really the only Nirvana record that matters and dave had nothing to do with that.
Krist was on the song Walking A Line from their One By One album. Dave and Krist have both said the reason he didn't join was because they didn't want it to be seen as Nirvana 2.0
So he didn't join foo fighters because he didn't join foo fighters THANK YOU !! 👍😃 i had truly been wondering about that that cleared it RIGHT up bless you !!! 😍

Seriously? WTF? LOL
Yeah this video has no credibility. Dude has Grohl as a founding member of Nirvana lol.
This whole video felt like someone trying to get to a word count total in an essay. It also felt like it was written using chatGPT..
Dave obviously had a HUGE vision and the knowledge and skill to MAKE it happen. I would not have stood in the way of that either. Ride along, you bet. Try to Captain the boat, nope.
Actually Dave has recorded all the instruments himself
As a Croatian, like Krist, it's pronounced Novo-selitch. You're welcome.
You crazy Yugoslavs.
We started WW1, bro.
@@AGoat1971
Tom Novo-Selleck would be proud.
2:44 is wrong, Dave Grohl plays every instrument on the Foo's debut ST album
I didn't see that you already called her on that 👍
at 2:23, you weren't paying attention.
@odasyti doesn't change my statement, they said that the trio began working on the ST album...
Actually, Greg Dully, I'm sure I misspelled that, played guitar on X static.
@@jaminjef The Afghan Wigs guy?!
Cuz she killed and stole their meal ticket
He wasnt invited. Dave Grohl made the first Foo Fighter's by himself. Plus Krist had his own band, Sweet 66.
@@SoundscapesRock was it really?!!! No way! But I already spoke publicly with arrogant assurance! There needs to be a perception of authority when I ramble on about the Gen Z scum and their damn auto tuned hip hop and pop country!
It was pretty cool when Krist joined Flipper for awhile during one of their reunions. I saw a live tape of it on UA-cam -- wonder if it's still here.
Did she just say BASSIST like.. B-assist?
"Surpisingly, Krist Novoselic joined the project (Nirvana) with the intention of starting a Creedence Clearwater Revival band called the Sellouts."
At the time, Krist was trolling clueless music journalists with that bullshit story, and apparently still is.
I like your videos! Thank you for taking the time to make them. I appreciate you!
Hey, thanks a bunch! Your support means the world to us!🤘
Krist Novoscelic isnt one of my bass influences. He is my bass influence. I fn love Eyes Adift and Giants in the Trees
Krist Novoselic and your Mom are my two biggest bass influences.😮
Crazy I was JUST thinking about this questions yesterday!
Skip to 3:35 for the answer. And it’s only a 15 second explanation 😂
very nice and enlightening
Not how Nirvana formed.... Dave was a late member. Krist and dave didn't meet and form Nirvana. It's like "NIrvana 101".
what is the title of that music at the beginning of his video?
check out giants in the trees too. The music is diverse, i appreciate krist stretching out. I think it's about being authentic for him, just a guess.
It’s tough to find 3-4 people who can keep it together and start a band.
however, foo fighter would be a little different if dave didn't become a drummer for nirvana n nirvana already had a foundation before dave joined, it was the first album
@@ToxicBrainSludge the fact is he got a Grammy for Nirvana. If he wasn't in the band, why would just a "touring guitarist" receive that?
In my opinion, Dave's vision for FF was to achieve success with exceptional players, avoiding any comparisons to Nirvana. FF rocks!
Which I think Krist hadn't started work on anything outside of Nirvana until quite awhile later...which would seem like another inevitable reason Krist would never have been bandmates with Dave either way 🤔 🤷
Well, that's just Nirvana without Kurt.
Stopped listening when she implied Chad was Pre Nirvana and Dave was a founding member. Bleach is really the only Nirvana record that matters and dave had nothing to do with that.
Prob because dave was always the best pure musician in that group. People think bands like that just happen but there is SO much more to it.
Because...Foo Fighters are tame, construction, radio RAWK?
Krist was on the song Walking A Line from their One By One album. Dave and Krist have both said the reason he didn't join was because they didn't want it to be seen as Nirvana 2.0
So he didn't join foo fighters because he didn't join foo fighters THANK YOU !! 👍😃 i had truly been wondering about that that cleared it RIGHT up bless you !!! 😍
Kirst was a childhood friend of Kurt's and really didn't want to do it full time anymore .
So Dave thought if hr invited him the bsnd will have controversy so he ditched his friend?
Probably because, when they asked for a sacrifice, he didn't think they meant, Literally.
Of course....I'm only joking....
...Or am I?
Iconic is such an overused word.
It’s quite simple. The Foo Fighters aren’t Nirvana. Why would he be a member? Dave wanted to start writing a new chapter.
After Kurt died, Krist and Dave had their own projects. They went their separate ways.
Death of nirvana was the birth of the Foo Fighters.. it just had to happen that way.
Krist & Kurt were Best Friends.
'to avoid any discomfort and tension that might arise from the past'.
Saved you 7 minutes.
not once did this video state why krist decided to not join foo fighters.....
Krist wanted to do his own thing. Nothing unusual about that.
I was alive back then, and followed the band very closely. A lot of the info on this video is wrong. Even within the first minute and a half, there were so many inaccuracies.
Krist did play bass and accordion on I Should Have Known on Wasting Light
Krist is underrated for the talent he has as a bassist
He a very mid bass player
Forget about talent, it won't get you any skills.
why is an AI-generated young nic cage in the thumbnail 🤔
wait is the narrator AI? this is uncanny valley type stuff
Im disappointed that the title isnt "Why Krist Novoselic didn't fight the foo"
