Is it ok to apply wax in a circular motion, I've heard it said wax should be applied in straight lines to avoid swirl marks. Thanks
short answer is yes eddie. had some guy tell me I was amateur for buffing a wax in a circular motion. the basis for his critique was better to have all the scratches you induce from applying the wax in straight lines so they are harder to spot when standing in front of the car. (everyday life must be a real struggle for this guy).. the problem is I dont induce scratches when I apply waxes, if I did I wouldnt apply them. some of this detailing "stuff" comes down to you just gotta form your own view on it. some of it isnt relevent to the way I go about maintaining my cars, but on the flip side, some of the stuff I spout probably isnt relevent to other people.
when you buff it in circles you just seem to get better coverage. You sort of spread out the wax more and you can work it further over the panel.. play around with it yourself and if you notice scratches in circles from spreading , then you have the option of changing the shape of those scratches to straight lines rather than circles. I bet you dont find any scratches though ;)

Eddie, this also comes down to the type of product that is being used, and at the end of the day Personal preference. I know Larry of AMMONYC uses the straight line method for his show waxes but not for his coatings and sealant.

Petes 53 was my first wax and remains a solid favourite. Great to see it featured here, although in a supporting role 😎 great video, thanks pal.
I use the Wo-Wo's for paste waxes, cheap Kent microfibre pads and for tyre dressings the wife's little washing up sponges when she's about to bin them. Use the sponge side rather than the scouring side obviously! Find them the perfect size plus cheap.

I got one of the shine mate 3" wax/poish applicator sets and you can then use whatever 3" spot pad with the velcro backing that you like. Personally, I like the Farecla G mop 3" black finishing pads. At around £13 for 5 in a pack they are excellent value for a branded product. The shine mate handle thing is about a tenner originally with a couple pads, but its soooooo much nicer to use.
I got a kit from majic, it comes with 3 applicators and a handle with sort of Velcro. I can use any pad with that handle it's super nkce

Hey Jon, are those round yellow cheap foam ones about the same as the applicator that comes in the Fusso can? I really like that applicator, still have it. You just wash it after using and it gets a bit softer than when new but still works very nicely.
Bilt Hamber seem to have stopped making the applicators shown. What are their grey ones like compared to the ones shown in the video?

Hi can you recommend a waterless wash product that wont remove any wax and wont add any gloss, i was looking at the ECH2o but i think that adds a gloss, as the wax im thinking of useing is Soft99 King of Gloss Dark, id like to find a product thats concentrated like ech02, any help please is appreciated

Are the foam ones ok to spread sealants like Carpro reload? Or should I be using microfibre pads?
Another great video :) Here's a video idea, review some cheap/Chinese detailing products and see how they compare to the top brands. Things like DA foam pads, microfibers, brushes, wash mitts etc.
ive got a lot of the cheap chinese pads and they function well enough.. usually if its a foam pad the chinese ones tends to be softer and dont last as long... but the price difference is huge.. have some good pad recomendations actually of some spta stuff thats literally around a pound a pad.

I love you’re channel, In you’re more recent vids I’ve seen you use a hexagon like shape hand applicator in black with a yellow ring I think it was around the edge of it, do you recommend that applicator and who stocks it please
i think thats teh adams applicator (check prestige car care .com) its excellent.. beefy big.. 2 different foams so the handle is stiff but the applicator is soft.. very nice.. only downside is its expensive

John I also wanted to ask but on my cars I get these yellow spots and noodle like spots on my car. Just wanted to ask but do you know what this stuff is. I think it's from plants plus how would you go about removing them. I used baby wipes and lightly wiped them off
hey but I would not use baby wipes generally.. Or at least I dont use baby wipes so Im not sure if thats a good idea or not but my gutz say no.. Yellow spots and noodle like spots hmmm... Im thinking bird crap? not sure if you have a picture mate... if it doesnt come off during the wash you can sort of work your way up the line of agressive... starting with detergent of shampoo, to an apc, then a degreaser maybe, maybe something mildy acidic, then after that you start looking at something abrasive like clay or polishes etc.. without knowing what it is its hard to recomend what to try.
Hey John, from what I've found its bee poo and that yellow deposit is digested pollen and nectar. When I cleaned my car I did notice that one spot didn't come off with snow foam and a light wipe with the wash mitt. I just put a bit more pressure on the mitt to remove it. Will keep a mind on bilt hamber surfex
From complete ignorance, could you use the red dual pad spta hd (the one you reviewed in the ebay polishing pad video) for waxing? I'm using a meguiars wax (it's kind of liquid/cream-ish)

I think your asking can I use the red dual foam spta pad to apply a wax... yes you could. but I find most paste waxes are better applied by hand.. by the time you bust out the machine polisher and set up you could have waxed half the car, plus the machine can access all the areas of paintwork easily..
I tend to only apply products by machine that are looser and less oily than paste waxes, and work better with a really level application... In fact very few things really.. maybe only abrasive prewax cleaners, or abrasives AIO or abrasives glazes...
Man the slang mixup with quid Vs pound is confusing, why do they call it out different. One time it's quid the other time it's pound. How does that work?
Forensic Detailing Channel, have you given any thought to doing a camparison between the Flex XC3401VRG and the new Makita PO5000C? There is a lot of message board chatter around the new Makita PO5000C. as it a shorter throw polisher (does both free rotation AND fixed rotation) at 5.5mm, but has a higher oscillation rate (790 OPM vs. 480 OPM).I am in North America, so I don't even know if the Makita has made it to the UK yet.

hey filippo generally speaking a sealant forms a chemical bond to the clearcoat... where as a wax is left behind on the clearcoat after the solvents vape out... generally speaking sealants offer more durability but require better preparation.. waxes can offer a deeper more jetting gloss on application but are way less resistent to detergents and their protection and gloss qualities fade quite rapdily (on a product by product bases though there are exceptions to this statement)
we talk about waxes and sealants a lot in the "best wax" video and the PVD mega test wax video on this channel.
Forensic Detailing Channel thanks for the answer. about layering.. is it reasonable to lay a wax on a sealant? for ex to add more gloss.. (?). So i imagine that the choice of a sealant instead a wax is just up to the user.. according to his target of results.
layering is an option, but remember only one product can sit on top, so whatever surface characteristics your sealant exhibits will be hidden away untill the coating above them washes away or fades.. you also run the risk of introducing compabaility problems depending on your choice of sealant and your choice of top product... certain chemical combos dont work well togther and you can get bad results.. also waxes are around 60% solvent, so another unknown is how your base coat sealant will hold up to being coated in a layer of solvent, and what the implcations are to the sealant and what the wax does.
if your going to layer pick combos that have been formulated to be layered, ideally from one brand..
For example, using Super resin polish, and then applying extra gloss protection sealant, and using autoglym HD wax after the EGP has cured works.. And it works because autoglym have designed them to work and use compatible products and solvent choices etc...
another example would be using angelwax Ti22 sealant and topping with an angelwax wax like 5th element (good very durable hydrophobic glossey wax) etc..

Hey jon got a video idea , I have been trying to research for past few days on how the hell to clean these wax applicators and haven’t found anyone covering this? I have autoglym hd wax kit with 2 red sponges that came with it , I used them about 2 years ago and forgot to clean them and found them the other day and it’s rock solid so I went and collected all my other applicators and some are still soft some are hard but I have a bad habit to use them and not clean them so wanted to know how to clean them properly... do I soak them , do I put them in washing machine? Do I use soap or fairy liquid I’m not sure what to do, you got a good video idea which hasn’t been covered yet
you cant easily clean wax out of foam applicators or fully clean. best thing is very hot water under a tap and spray them out with surfex HD at 10:1 and scrub the hell out of them, surfex is a lot more powerfull than fairy liquid.. very hot water. but even after doing this they will have some wax in them :) I would not worry too much though.

I always grew up believing that sponges or foams created swirls in paintwork, is that possible or just crap. Great channel btw!
ryco2000uk no they dont. The issue with sponges are that they don’t pick up solids very well so scrubbing them over dirt they will scratch your paint while microfiber absorbs the dirt and won’t create that many swirls
On clean surfaces however (and they should be clean if you want to apply waxes or sealants) sponges are save.
I found that the bilt hamber applicator told under my hand and that pinch split open
yer with dry waxes they can roll.. but all the flat applicators can really..
For hand polishing and compounding which one do you recommend?
for hand polishing something bigger and stiffer because your hand will get tired and the soft pads will scrutch up. I would recomend the ZFE big fake hex pads I think. Or maybe the big adams foam applicators would be good for that.
Jon, have you heard of a German brand called Alclear? If so have you any experience of using their products? I've never seen any comments anywhere on this brand. I bought a couple of their polishing pucks via Amazon, but they seem slightly rough for the purpose and I'm scared of scratching the paint. Is there any way an enthusiastic amateur like me can gauge whether or not a product like this is safe, or can be harmful? Not all you viewers are knowledgeable detailers, but love your videos. Anyway I'm sending for some Auto Finesse pucks on your recommendation.
hey mel... I dont think Ive recomended the AF pucks based on the price. I found someone selling something similiar for 1.50 but they ran out of stock fast. Im not sure what AF charge but I would not really pay more than 2-3 quid for any foam hand applicator. think fecks philosphy sell something like it a lot cheaper.
best way is to test the alclear products on a daily driver or get a test panel from your local body shop mate.

SPTA foam is what I use. I get a 12 pack of UFO pads for around $8.00 on Amazon. But I have come to really love the durability and softness of SPTA formulas. That's all you're getting with the highly overpriced Maguire pads
Can you use a buffer on wax
yes mate but it doesnt really help much. so many little tight areas it wont hit properly. really the buffer might be a bit more suitable for products that benefit for being worked (like abrasive polish liquid wax type products etc)

yes I like but with foam applicators I usually dont want to pay too much so most of my recomendations are what I think is really good value. but AF do some sexy accessories products that are worth supporting...

Jon Bennett when I use a foam pad to dress my wheels I tend to hold it with two fingers and my thumb. I find it more comfortable than using all your fingers to hold the pad which tends to give me cramps

those guys were selling off lots of "sams detailing" branded stuff for really good price (was thinking sams detailing might have gone out of business of something and stock was passed over). when the items ran out I dont think they could restock because the item seems to be kept on ebay with a high price.. Im not sure if thats just because the item also works a bit like a placeholder advert... but yer they had some good stuff very cheap as well...

I only use microfiber applicators. I feel that foam does not slide over the paint as good, it kinda sticks.
that sticking is usually down to the product you have on top.. I know exactly what you mean though.. I think some waxes are really prone to leaving this grippy feel to the paint and the next time you go and wax it feels all sticky and rough.. other times you wax on top of other products it doesnt happen and you lay down the wax on top and its all silky smooth,,,
I use microfiber, easier to clean after, easier to put on a thin layer and it is always smooth. No sticking.
The cheap ones on ebay are pretty good! I have not had any problems with them and if they get old you can just use them for example for tire dressings etc..
I found this with Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax. Only glided over the paint just after dipping in the pot. But when you're trying to apply it thin it would stick and drag on the paint which was annoying.
Have you heard of microfiber madness waxing moon? I can buy them around 5€ each and quality is excellent imo :-)
