My Korean grandma used to make this when she was alive until she had to be in a wheelchair. The rest of my family used to complain about the smell whenever she made it. She immigrated to Japan from Korea when she was a young girl and now that I think about it, the smell of Cheonggukjan must’ve been one of those things that reminded her of her home country. As I was watching Maangchi explaining the smell, I could almost smell exactly how it smelt like when my grandma made it. It made me miss her and I wish I tried my grandma’s homemade Cheonggukjan when I could instead of complaining. I will try the recipe and hopefully my grandma in heaven sees me enjoying the smell this time 😌 Thanks Maangchi for sharing the recipe❤️

이 분은 찐이다... 진짜다 진짜. 한식 잘하시는 분은 많아도 요리가 손에 익어서 쉽게, 시원스레하시는 분이 은근히 적더라구요. 게다가 한국인입장에서는 늘상 먹는 음식들이다보니 간단하게 집에 있는 재료로만 만드는데 이게 제대로 된 레시피가 아니라서 이 음식을 모르는 외국분들한테 소개하기엔 아쉽고. 그리고 영어로 설명을 야무지게 하는 것도 힘들고요. 망치님은 삼위일체... 모든 것이 완벽해요. 꽃게탕이랑 비빔밥레시피영상을 보고 박수쳤습니다.

The good thing about Korea cuisine is that they are so simply! Most of the stews follow in the same pattern: anchovy/kelp stock, then onion, soup paste or some gochujang, garlic, vegetable, meat (pork, fish or seafood), red pepper flake, and green onion. Then you have it.

This Cheonggukjang-jjigae is my soul food. It is still one of my favorite.
I ate this stew with strong smell ever since I was so little. and it made my stomach so strong that later I became able to enjoy all kinds of fermented and smelly foods such as Japanese natto, blue cheese, durian, fermented stingray etc..
Among all kinds of fermented foods in the world, my favorite and the number one winter food, it is always this Cheonggukjang-jjigae... Thank you for your video Maangchi

so I made the Cheonggukjang right after that video, and I had a go idea how to make this soup and didn't wait and made my own version of the soup - yummy. The only down side my 3 1/2 year old was holding her nose and saying over and over your soup stinks! ")

WARNING: Don't expect the smell to be heavenly, because it is the stinkiest Korean food I've smelled in my Korean life (yes I'm Korean). Taste? It's actually an acquired taste.. but I love it. Good luck. Don't sue Maangchi when you pass out from smell because you've been warned...
I adore fermented foods, even though I didn't grow up with many. Kimchi, doenjang, cheonggukjang, natto, kombucha, miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, yogurt... they are all heavenly to me, lol!

I’m interested, how would you describe the smell? I’m not korean but I absolutely love korean food, especially doenjang jjigae!! So I’m very curious about the differences between this and normal doenjang jjigae!
@@madisonm9896 it smells like something between stinky feet and rotten meat. Although, it tastes savory, this is very different smell from other Korean dishes, and it is probably closer to a rotting smell than a fermenting smell. I'll give this a 8/10 in difficulty level for our foreign friends. ;)
